801  Non-Gaming / Trading Forum / LF: Atari 2600 joysticks/AC adaptor, [PS2] Rumble Roses on: January 19, 2006, 08:09:24 PM
a weird combo, but a friend is in need of Rumble Roses for the PS2. she also acquired an Atari VCS, but it came with no AC adaptor or input devices (no joysticks or paddles). also, the plug coming from the VCS system looks like an RCA plug, and so i assume that a 2600 RF Modulator is needed.

anyways, let me know what you'd want for these, if you have them.

i wish the US was more like Europe, where media items are NOT shrinkwrapped...  it's just a waste of plastic.

i'd say that almost half of the 'new' games i've acquired over the past 2 years or so have been from the PIFF thread.  :lorax:  so don't close it...

i've never complained about any ad/company before this one.  so what ad banners DO generate revenue?  i assume it's the blinky/flashy, making irritating noise Flash ones, eh?
809  Non-Gaming / Forum and Site Feedback / IGE Banner Ad on: December 17, 2005, 12:28:06 AM
while a question of 'ethics' would be overstating the matter, and disregarding my personal feelings on MMORPGs... it remains that this is the sort of business i, as a gamer, want no association with.

812  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / The Revolution has begun...(IGN chan, specs, launch date?) on: December 07, 2005, 01:53:26 AM
nintendo is still the only console company that is making a profit.   i'm guessing the cheaper-to-produce hardware is one of the contributing factors.

also, the custom control interfaces (DS: dual screen, touch screen - Revolution: special controller) have a bonus side effect of making piracy and emulation much* more difficult.

It's uber predictable in that 'ok I'll grab the item and monsters are going to swarm me from all over' kind of way.  It isnt that I dislike FPS games, because I really like them.  It's just this game seems to be missing some intangible something for me.

it's definitely not going to get any better for you, then...  it clicked with me right away, as i could make up my own strategies and mini-games within the very simple 'kill everything and lots of it' framework - but i can see how some people could be turned off by the basic concept.

play on Normal your first time through.  seriously.  you'll get enough ammo/armor that you don't really have to worry about going through battles unscathed (like i was constantly worrying about) - as for the gameplay itself, you sorta have to be into that kinda thing.  i myself never cared for co-op mode, as you could just keep respawning when you died and that made it boring.

819  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Please watch the MirrorMask trailer on: October 19, 2005, 06:52:19 AM
i finally got around to seeing it tonight. no spoilers ahead!

it was actually pretty 'slow' paced, which is exceeeeedingly rare for a children's film these days.

so the bad, first: i kept losing attention, and it felt sometimes like 'oh, here's two actors against a bluescreen and CGI is everything else' so it felt really empty at times. it definitely has a 'kids movie' feel, so look out for drawn-out exposition and awkward scenes.

the good is that i've not seen a movie that looks like it before - the filters used on the different shots kept my eyes intrigued. the 'old film' look never got old, but i fear it being copied in the future.... it also has some of the better credits, ever (the particular music/CGI combination).

speaking of, the music/score definitely deserves mention - hard to describe, but it was very clear, and 'channel separated' - a very bold but minimal soundmix. the style was sorta old-timey in a very modern way. there were some some intriguing ambient SFX also. you can tell effort went into making a distinctive atmosphere for this.

i'm guessing this movie is going to make Dave McKean a sought-after set/character designer, for sure. his imprint is everywhere and some of the results are really amazing.

What were the problems with the netcode on Halo?

What was it like working with Microsoft?  (i understand that Bungee had almost nothing to do with the PC version)

Were they given the Halo 2 porting project?

It scarred you that bad?

that was the purchase that made me go 'why am i paying $45 for one game?'  - especially since my backlog had reached the point of no return a while beforehand and i had no chance of catching up anytime in the near future.  so... it's been the bargain and used bins, ever since.

and re: B&W - i never got very far past the first level, but i really enjoyed that much, at least!

EDIT: thinking back more, i did* actually purchase Dungeon Siege brand-new the next year (?!!) (tho it did have a large rebate attached to it, so i only paid $23 for that title).  needless to say, the coffin was now firmly nailed shut; never again; etc.

mobiles are freakin' expensive...

just wanted to point out this pretty neeeat service i've been using recently:

http://www.voipbuster.com

it's a downloadable VoIP program that lets you call mobiles/landlines in the US, and landlines in some major countries of the world, for extremely low cost (a flat fee of 1 euro for 4 months, right now, as it's in beta).  rates for calling mobiles in other countries is about the same as Skype-Out.

i paid my $1.27 and now i'm making lots of LD and international calls. sometimes the voice quality is rather choppy, but usually it works just fine.

Yeah, sunrocket has been pretty good.

Interesting feature.  Just put your list on aboard and call randomly?  Is there like a random call feature or a profile so that you have some clue who you are going to talk to or is it just a list and you click and say, "hello?"

i don't remember the particulars of how your SkypeMe! mode is displayed to other people (is it in the directory?  elsewhere?), but it's simply a setting one can activate or deactivate (alongside other settings such as Away, Online, Invisible, etc).
