“Then I am a religious man, Prendick, as every sane man must be. It may be, I fancy, that I have seen more of the ways of this world's Maker than you,—for I have sought his laws, in my way, all my life, while you, I understand, have been collecting butterflies. And I tell you, pleasure and pain have nothing to do with heaven or hell. Pleasure and pain—bah! What is your theologian's ecstasy but Mahomet's houri in the dark? This store which men and women set on pleasure and pain, Prendick, is the mark of the beast upon them,—the mark of the beast from which they came! Pain, pain and pleasure, they are for us only so long as we wriggle in the dust..."

making sequels to (or remakes of) Verhoeven films is nonsensical.
163  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: [movie] Drive on: February 19, 2012, 10:00:01 PM
the gf has been pushing me to watch this for a while now, so i did last night... this was just after me seeing _Heat_ and _Thief_ for the first time over the past two weeks, so the spectre of Michael Mann loomed heavily over everything... (she had said that this would just be the same movie again, half-jokingly)

i enjoyed the pacing of it in the first half - there were some scenes where the silences were metronomic and perfectly 'tapped' out. for me, however, the over-the-top violence (even with CGI blood) and simple ending pushed the movie into Sillytown and heavily brought down my estimation of it.

too bad you weren't selling this several months ago when i got a 5770..

i still might be interested. can you cross-fire Radeon cards from different manufacturers?
166  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Steam Backlog - The Undertaking. on: February 07, 2012, 03:29:00 AM
take on some of the 'sandbox' titles. example: Train Simulator 2012 - futz around with that for a while, then do something else. come back to it when you feel like. nothing to 'complete' there.
167  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Re: Windows 7 failing to reinstall on my current PC on: February 07, 2012, 03:03:08 AM
looks like i posted too soon - disabling MS Security Essentials allowed the reinstall from within Windows to correctly finish. (... really?)  still doesn't explain why the booting from DVD/USB failed.
168  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / [solved] Windows 7 failing to reinstall on: February 07, 2012, 02:09:07 AM
I am having problems with my new video card (apparently did not fully uninstall the old video card drivers - dxdiag is still reporting the old video card - and among other issues i get "special memory pool allocation error" BSODs when restarting the machine) and am attempting to reinstall Windows 7, as nothing else I've tried has worked to fix this issue.

When I boot Windows 7 64-bit Ultimate edition from DVD or USB, I get the GUI installation background 'wallpaper' and mouse cursor, but no dialogs, nor is any sort of actionable input displayed. I have to press the reset or power button here to exit.

Attempting to set up from within Windows 7 will successfully copy and extract the installation files, but upon reboot, when the GUI installation screen is displayed with "Setup is starting...", the dialog "Windows could not start the installation process." immediately displays. I can only exit and reboot at this point.

I am attempting to again install from within Windows, but disabling MS Security Essentials first. (I do not see any sort of boot-sector protection options available in the BIOS.) If that fails, I would probably have to fully reformat the hard drive and hope that booting from DVD/USB will display the proper installation dialogs, but that seems a bit risky at this point. I could also attempt to install Linux and see if that fails miserably.

System specs:
8GB (4x2GB) A-DATA Gaming Series 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM 1600 (running at 1333 speed)
AMD Phenom II X4 925 Deneb 2.8GHz Socket AM3 95W Quad-Core Processor
GIGABYTE GA-770TA-UD3 AMD 770 AM3
Socket AM3 PC3-10600 (DDR3-1333) ATX Motherboard Retail
HIS Radeon HD 5770 1GB GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16
1.5TB Seagate Barracuda 7200 HD
SilverStone ST50F 500W PSU

I should note that MemTestx86+ and Windows Memory Checker (whatever that's called) do not display any errors in RAM.

Ideas?

I have no idea if it's true that Apple computers keep a better resale value, but let's go with that.

i just sold an 8-year old iBook G3 for a modest sum. any laptop that shipped with Windows from that time won't fetch nearly as much.

How much, if I may ask?  I have a 2006 MacBook I'm looking to sell soon.

i could have sold it for around $90-100, but it went to a friend for $60. i think the power cable itself was worth almost half of that... those things sell for crazy prices.
174  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Your Top 5 Graphic Novels on: December 16, 2011, 10:05:35 AM
not in my top five, but i just wanted to mention the last series i read -_Oldboy_ (Garon Tsuchiya/Nobuaki Minegishi) was a fantastically-paced thriller. i haven't seen the movie adaptation, but from what i've read, they take very different approaches to the plot.
175  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Your Top 5 Graphic Novels on: December 16, 2011, 10:01:12 AM
_Locke & Key_ is one of the more impressive graphic novel series i've read. art is flawless (for its style) and the story is solid, with effective use of parallelism, analogy, symbolism, pacing, etc ... i have some quibbles with it, but you won't be disappointed.

and really, if you haven't yet read Neil Gaiman's _Sandman_, you are missing out on a legendary bit of storytelling in modern comics.

not yet mentioned:
Alan Moore _Promethea_
Katsuhiro Otomo _Akira_ (incredible, painstakingly-drawn art)
Osamu Tezuka _Buddha_

i know what this is, but i can't remember the name. it came out in the mid-80s... i think i remember it retailed for $89.99? and it did come in a huge box. and it was entirely text, wasn't it? that was the purpose of the gameboard that came with it, so you could track your movements...

going to drive me crazy, now that i can't think of what it was called.

I think they're doing too many of these Humble Bundles, frankly.

no such thing.

- this is a great way for Linux games to get distributed - it seems that going through HumbleBundle makes some creators put out Linux ports of their otherwise Windows-only titles.

- this is pretty much my main game purchasing venue now. i've gotten a high number of quality games from these deals.

- charity giving!

i hope they keep up the pace of these new bundles. i've put more hours into The Binding of Isaac than almost any other game this year, so far.

Inverter probably. Sometimes the inverter can shut the monitor off if one of the back lights is on the fritz, though, so that could be the issue as well.

When you turn your monitor on, do you get a picture for a few seconds and then it shuts off, or does it shut off immediately?

i don't get a picture at all. nothing is ever displayed...

196  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / no display on LCD monitor on: October 13, 2011, 08:37:05 AM
i purchased a Dell 2005FPW from a user on this very board back in January, and one day a few weeks ago, while i was using the computer, the display suddenly went completely black. it now displays nothing on the screen (not even the on-screen menus), but the power light will turn on and off when the power button is pressed. i've tried the VGA, DVI, composite and s-video inputs - none work. i've tried shining a light on the monitor to see if i can see anything displayed on the screen at all, but i can't see anything. i figure my next step is to disassemble the monitor (as shown here) to see if any capacitors have swollen. what is the likely problem here?
197  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / PSP custom firmware on: September 18, 2011, 07:30:38 AM
I've been meaning to install custom firmware on my PSP-1000 for homebrew for a few years, but want to do it now, as i have two new games that require the firmware to be updated. I'm currently on official firmware 5.03 and I have been avoiding playing these new UMDs, as I thought the system had to be on firmware 5.03 to have a different firmware installed. I've done some forum reading, and I can't quite figure out which updater or CFW I should use. the latest version of PRO-B8 seems to be the way to go, I think?

I really use my Kindle in conjunction with retroread.com and Google Books to find pre-1923 books of interest. I download the ones that have epub versions (most of the ones I'm interested in do) and convert them to mobi at Retroreads and can send them directly to my Kindle. The conversion is a bit ugly but isn't really a detriment to me.

Project Gutenberg already has Kindle-formatted versions of many of their texts - would save you a step.

i've been using this for eight years now, and it has become very simple to set-up. just get the skype installer from skype.com - every option it presents to you is pretty much a no-brainer. it will also detect your camera, and you can calibrate from the Tools -> Options -> Video Settings menu.

i actually would recommend having more than 4GB of RAM for Parallels, as launching a Win7 virtual environment twice or more in a row tends to seriously bog down everything.
