161  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / no display on LCD monitor on: October 13, 2011, 08:37:05 AM
i purchased a Dell 2005FPW from a user on this very board back in January, and one day a few weeks ago, while i was using the computer, the display suddenly went completely black. it now displays nothing on the screen (not even the on-screen menus), but the power light will turn on and off when the power button is pressed. i've tried the VGA, DVI, composite and s-video inputs - none work. i've tried shining a light on the monitor to see if i can see anything displayed on the screen at all, but i can't see anything. i figure my next step is to disassemble the monitor (as shown here) to see if any capacitors have swollen. what is the likely problem here?
162  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / PSP custom firmware on: September 18, 2011, 07:30:38 AM
I've been meaning to install custom firmware on my PSP-1000 for homebrew for a few years, but want to do it now, as i have two new games that require the firmware to be updated. I'm currently on official firmware 5.03 and I have been avoiding playing these new UMDs, as I thought the system had to be on firmware 5.03 to have a different firmware installed. I've done some forum reading, and I can't quite figure out which updater or CFW I should use. the latest version of PRO-B8 seems to be the way to go, I think?

I really use my Kindle in conjunction with and Google Books to find pre-1923 books of interest. I download the ones that have epub versions (most of the ones I'm interested in do) and convert them to mobi at Retroreads and can send them directly to my Kindle. The conversion is a bit ugly but isn't really a detriment to me.

Project Gutenberg already has Kindle-formatted versions of many of their texts - would save you a step.
164  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Re: Skype Question on: September 14, 2011, 11:13:56 PM
i've been using this for eight years now, and it has become very simple to set-up. just get the skype installer from - every option it presents to you is pretty much a no-brainer. it will also detect your camera, and you can calibrate from the Tools -> Options -> Video Settings menu.

165  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Re: Mac Gurus: Vmware Fusion vs. Parallels? on: September 14, 2011, 11:10:53 PM
i actually would recommend having more than 4GB of RAM for Parallels, as launching a Win7 virtual environment twice or more in a row tends to seriously bog down everything.

169  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: [TV] Black Dynamite, the cartoon! on: August 15, 2011, 07:41:45 AM
that was disappointing. at least they kept (most of?) the original actors for the voices. if you haven't seen the the original movie, definitely do so.

175  Non-Gaming / Trading Forum / looking for old Nokia phone - TMobile or unlocked on: June 27, 2011, 02:44:25 AM
all that matters is that it works on GSM networks for T-Mobile and has the charger. monochrome screen, whatever - 'candybar' models preferred and the smaller the better, but age/technology doesn't otherwise matter. if you have one collecting dust, let me know...

if a Nokia model can't be located, i'd accept something from other manufacturers. i might be able to get an AT&T or other GSM device unlocked as well...

they make great armrests when one is sitting on the couch and every pug i've ever met has been friendly, but i don't see the point of breeding dogs with inherent health problems (e.g. nasal passage issues).

178  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Re: Going to take the plunge from Windows 7 to Ubuntu - Now all things Ubuntu/Linux on: June 12, 2011, 09:31:46 PM
i'm liking Unity on Ubuntu, even though it still seems to be in a beta release state. i can see a few areas where usability can be (and should be) improved, but it's the most 'flowing' UI i've used on a *nix machine yet. too bad the memory usage is somewhat more substantial than GNOME/KDE...

i was going to replace OS X Tiger on my iBook G3 (ca. 2002) with Debian, but it doesn't look like that will fix the inability to connect to WPA2 networks over wifi - appears to be a hardware limitation of the original Airport.

I think the main reason for that difference is that most people who know nothing about computers buy PCs. And so while there are almost certainly more absolute numbers of tech-savvy PC people, there are also almost certainly higher absolute numbers of computer illiterate PC folk. So relative to their install base, Mac users probably have a higher percentage of tech savvy users.

Keep in mind that OS X sits on top a Unix variant, which is attractive to some techies.

This would be the reason i use Mac (and Linux) machines at work - the Unix-based command line interface.
183  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Trip to Seattle in the fall - what's the best time? on: April 15, 2011, 07:15:08 AM
get here in early September (first half of the month for sure).

- if you can get here for a day of Bumbershoot, do so

- the downtown Central Library (check out the architecture from the top floor inside)

- Discovery Park in Magnolia - be sure to head to the beach

- Archie McPhee in Wallingford (near where i live... website explains all: )

- the giant stone troll under the Aurora Bridge in Fremont (there's also a huge statue of Vladimir Lenin in downtown Fremont)

- Thai Tom in University District - if you like Thai food, you must go here. the place is a hole in the wall, but there's a reason there's always a line in front of it when there are about a dozen other Thai restaurants within a few blocks....

(there are at least 200 Thai restaurants in Seattle ... and around 100 Teriyaki shops. see the NYT article about it)

- Samurai Noodle in the International District for prettttty good ramen

- Gasworks Park in... what's that neighborhood called... uh, North Lake Union?  go to the top of the tallest hill there.

- Pink Gorilla in International and University Districts for rare/import video games

- Easy Street Records in Queen Anne (great record store)

- Big Bowl Pho in Ballard... because the portions are huuuge (and good)

- if you must eat by the waterfront, check out The Pink Door

- drive out for a hike to Mount Sai or Pilchuk

- take the ferry to Bremerton

one of my favorite things about these movies is how the actors portray the characters so well. the overall effect truly captures the feeling of a 'real-life' comic adaptation done right.

The first part of Daywatch gives the impression of how a (good) TV series based on this universe would turn out - too bad that never happened.

Flatout 1 was crossplatform with the Xbox, whereas 2 was exclusive to the PC. That allowed Bugbear to update it with  quite a few things beyond the capabilities of the Xbox - graphics are quite a bit better.

excuse the correction, but the first two FlatOuts *were* available on PS2 and Xbox.
