Serious Sam 2 now!
2  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Weekend Playlist - 10/2/15 Edition on: October 03, 2015, 12:42:23 AM
Serious Sam: SE HD (last level, it's serious)

there has been a minor Minecraft revival on the new-ish OO server, i'll be doing some hut improvements.

EDIT: nevermind, finished SS:SE. the huge penultimate fight took forever, but the final one against Mordekai the Summoner was cake in comparison.

Spoiler for Hiden:
the 'confessional' with Mental over the phone in the cathedral was pretty funny.

What is "SS:SE"?

EDIT: Oh, never mind.  I just Googled "Exotech Larva" and found out it's Serious Sam.

Serious Sam: Second Encounter. and i just finished the first of the final three levels, so it may well be that i'll reach the end in the next few weeks. i'm using the Serious Sam wiki this time around to find the tougher secrets, which i don't want to miss as there are some funny ones.

ending this weekend on the very last level. currently slogging through the 'Corridor of Death'. every game in this series becomes even less subtle on the final level - it's many hundreds of enemies to take on, over and over. trigger finger is worn out.

the end of the previous level was a perfect example of why i like this series so much - on the way to this castle, you have to fight waves of enemies on a vast ice lake. you can't control your sliding and where you're going very well, but neither can the aliens you're fighting.

also ended up going back to Minecraft on the OO server. this particular server requires the use of like 80 mods, but i'm still having fun with it.

Ladybug?  That doesn't ring a bell at all.

game is awesome! clearly inspired by Pac-Man, but makes the whole dot-eating part actually fun (with the addition of more responsive controls, timer-based enemy dispatch, swinging gates and skulls that can kill either the player or the enemy bugs.)

The Talos Principle, Serious Sam HD:SE, Wreckfest, Dark Souls. also The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth (confirming i've pretty much burnt out on this)

Humble Store has Apotheon and Rogue Legacy on sale, maybe i'll get those?

EDIT: also Deadly Premonition

i live in Seattle, so i certainly experience the influx of 40,000 out-of-towners that weekend... the S.O. goes every year. i went two different years (had a free pass each time), and it is a ridiculously-sized convention. even i got overwhelmed - you really do seem to need multiple days to see everything.

this year i went to the indie games expo thing that was not affiliated with PAX. i got the high score of the day on 'Mod Puzzle Game'.

i will be staffing a co-worker's 'sell my junk, er, collectables' table at the Seattle Retro Game Expo in two weeks.

11  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Weekend playlist - 8/7 edition on: August 08, 2015, 08:35:51 AM
i just got Dark Souls for $3 and some change, so probably that...

and continuing with Serious Sam: SE. i expect this will take a few more months. taken as a whole, over the last decade and a half since i played the first demo, i think this series turned out to be some of the funnest, most memorable gaming time i've experienced - not bad for what started as a budget title.

(and i always forget that it's impossible to go back to SS: FE after playing this installment, since the original game doesn't have the chainsaw, flamethrower or sniper rifle.)

try unseating and reseating the HDMI cable at both ends (i'm assuming you're using HDMI).
also try disconnecting the power brick cable completely and then reattaching at all points.
try component video hookup and see what happens.

continuing with Serious Sam SE (HD) - finished FE (HD) a few weeks back. i'm making it a point to complete all the SS games - never finished these in their original incarnations, and the previous computer i had when i got the remakes wasn't good enough to play them at a decent graphics level.. since i won SS3:BFE last year (the prequel), it inspired me to get back into the series. will move onto SS2 after this.

also playing The Talos Principle as well!

Gratch's comment about "have become very specific in which games we play/have interest in" rings true. in real life, there are some people who are 'gamers' at my job, but with so many games available and people having their own narrowed interests, it's very hard to get anyone to talk about the same thing. just a few weeks ago a guy was trying to get me into some mobile-phone based Korean freemium MMORPG - i was like NO. there's someone who spends all of their non-programming time watching Starcraft gameplay videos. that's really their only interest... pretty much every day for the past five years. i have no real interest in Starcraft, so that avenue of conversation is out. there's a DOTA2 contingent - i don't care about battle arena games either.

so on top of that, i don't play very many AAA big-budget games, so that leaves me out of conversations in general when they do occur. fortunately there is one coworker i can talk to about games like Binding of Isaac or Wreckfest or other indie-ish stuff - everyone else is like 'never heard of it'.

the threads i post on games i'm currently playing tend to drop like a rock, since most other people have not heard of the game, are not interested, or played it years ago.

Forge, we are of the same mind.  The more I read it, the less I liked it.  Your review perfectly sums up how I feel about it.

a book existing soley of references is bad, but what really galls me is it wasn't even done cleverly! it was a really lazy excuse of a story; i bailed near the halfway point (the S.O., who was also reading it at the same time i was, came to the same conclusion and also quit.) anyone conversant in trivia and retaining memories of semi-forgotten cultural signifiers and minutiae could bang out some reference-laden schlock wrapped in a generic tissue of a plot, and become an instant subcultural darling with little effort, i guess. so there's your 'get rich quick' scheme - it's still a market that has not been tapped out. do not underestimate the power of nostalgia and mimicry.

finally found out there's a new secret level - i had been spending all my time on the Cathedral/Chest, and didn't know that if you beat Sheol five times you gain access to the "Dark Room" (in the old game, Cathedral and Sheol would go to the Chest - now they separate.) wish i had known that earlier!

anyone playing Rebirth? it's worth getting if you liked the original - there's enough new content and such to make it still interesting (Steam says i've now put about 100 hours into the remake.) funny thing is i've gotten so used to the keyboard controls that i still don't use the (now-included) gamepad support - i find the keyboard is more accurate. very important when trying to get that coin in between the floor spikes...

now watching them all in chronological order. i'll get to the nuWho around 2018, at my current rate; just started on the Peter Davison years (fifth Doctor, early 80s - the S.O. can't stand Tegan's 'horribleness' - said she was worse than Sarah Jane, heh)
31  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / GOG "Reclaim Your Games" initiative on: April 03, 2015, 03:58:39 AM

pretty cool what they're starting to undertake here - enter the CD/DVD-key from your retail boxed product, and add it to your library with no DRM. i redeemed my copy of Shadow of Chernobyl just now (which just happened to be the last ever brand-new-release-week-boxed-game-from-a-brick-and-mortar-store i ever purchased).

Initial titles:

Editions released worldwide:
-S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl
-S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Clear Sky
-S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Call of Pripyat

Editions released only in CIS & Russian territories:
-Mount & Blade: Warband
-Mount & Blade: With Fire & Sword
-Eador: Genesis

This is just the start of something much bigger. We plan to add more titles to the list in the future - it's a long and complicated process that involves negotiating with multiple parties and a scavenger hunt to retrieve forgotten key-databases - but then, we are on a mission here, we'll do whatever it takes.

i have had to go through three warranty power supply exchanges over the past decade or so. for the most recent time just last year, Corsair actually upgraded me to a 80 PLUS Gold model from the Bronze one that broke, since it was no longer made. it was also a slightly higher wattage rating, with the downside that it now exceeds what my UPS is rated for.

55 or so pages in and I am already sick of the Bobisms. I hate how everything is explained like the narrator is telling the story to a class of ten year olds. Show, don't tell. ARGH! Still, the 80's stuff is nice and nostalgic.

I'm surprised there aren't more negative opinions in this thread as I found the book to be rather poor.  Along with the Bobisms the main character is a major Mary Sue (or Gary Stu) if you will.  Nothing interesting is ever really done with the 80s stuff, and it's really mostly just name dropping or describing how something happened in a movie or game.  He goes well outside the 80s before and after with references as well, really it's just a geek affirmation piece, you like this thing right, well you know what it's cool to like it!

i agree that the book was absolutely painful reading - i had to quit it a third of the way through (which is something i hate doing, but when it has to be done...)

38  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Doctor Who: the original series on: March 19, 2015, 04:11:09 AM
for the past 25 years, Tacoma public television airs the episodes from the mid-60s to the late-80s on Saturday nights IN CHRONOLOGICAL ORDER, and the S.O. and i try to watch every week. (and i set the VCR to record if we're not home). KBTC has a special pledge drive every six months just for these reruns, as the BBC charges $30k a year for the privilege.

anyhow, i will say i have only ever seen one episode of 'new Who', but i am a lifelong fan of the original series. i grew up on Tom Baker's and Peter Davison's episodes in the late 70s and early 80s, so i always thought the fourth Doctor was my favorite (and Leela was my favorite companion), but having now seen a pretty sizeable portion of the shows, i think the second (Patrick Troughton) is the best. Romana was clearly the smartest companion, but she was a Time Lord, so maybe that's not a fair comparison... also, the original episodes with William Hartnell are pretty good, and quite a bit different in feel than later years - a good change of pace from a lot of same-y 70's plots.
