OS X Mavericks and Yosemite actually ship with DualShock drivers! so yeah, PS3 controller support on Mac is much better than Xbox three-sixty.

Dumb question, but just got my first soundbar. Is there any reason I would need to plug the optical cables directly from bluray or cable box rather than through the tv?

i assume you don't have a receiver? if not, then one reason i could think of would be to listen to CD/DVD/SACD/etc audio without having to power your TV on!

Quote from: naednek on January 02, 2015, 05:04:12 PM

to piggy back on this.

I'm looking into getting a soundbar and selling my speakers/receiver.  I just built an HTPC and I don't believe I have optical on my TV or my HTPC.  Is that the only way to connect?

HDMI or analog audio RCA jacks. although the Sony Blu-Ray player my coworker gave me has ZERO analog jacks on it (which is ridiculous, in my opinion...)

Binding of Isaac: Rebirth (solo and co-op with the s.o.)
RAGE (sp campaign)
Wreckfest (mp online)

maybe restart 1000 Amps.

s.o. is trying to finish the sp campaign in Destiny; dunno what she has planned for after that. she asked if she should get Dragon Age: Inquisition, to which i responded 'meh, dunno'.

I just bought FlatOut: Ultimate Cargage for $5 on Steam. Might be up your alley.

Picked this up today, downloaded it, went to fire it up, and...nothing.  It goes throughout the initial install stuff, then the window disappears and nothing happens.  Apparently this isn't an uncommon issue, something to do with how it was initially integrated with GFWL.

Hopefully I can get it to work.    icon_cry

oh wait, you're 'Skinypupy' on OO, right? so you figured it out.

Bugbear's Wreckfest is a lot of fun when playing online (one of the very few jokkis/folkracing games available!), but not a whole lot of content yet. at least the driving model and physics are solid. so for SURE check out the Flatout games (Flatout, Flatout 2, and Flatout: Ultimate Carnage aka Flatout 2.1), which are among the best of their kind available. i'm partial to the first one in the series, as it stays much truer to the jokkis spirit. keep far away from Flatout 3, which was not by Bugbear.

i would have also recommended DiRT 2, but it's no longer available on Steam. i guess DiRT 3 (rally) or GRiD 2 (street) would be acceptable backups, if you can't find it used.

i would have also recommended Blur (from the creators of Geometry Wars!), tho it too is no longer available on Steam (but physical copies can still be located). i am sure there are other arcade-combat kartlike racer games out there like this, but i don't know what they are.

11  Non-Gaming / Trading Forum / Looking for AMD AM2 mobo or Socket 939 processor on: December 29, 2014, 08:05:01 AM
trying to build a desktop computer out of cast-off/unwanted/old parts. i have the power supply, an AM2 processor (AMD 64X2 5200+), a few hard drives, 1GB DDR2 RAM and an artifacting-like-crazy nVidia video card i will try to reflow. i have a Gigabyte AM2 motherboard with some bulging capacitors that is super flaky with the power and video - looking to replace that.

alternatively, i can get a Socket 939 mobo for free, which means i'd need an appropriate processor for that.

15  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: It's Almost Thanksgiving (USA! USA!), What's your GOTY? on: November 23, 2014, 11:10:12 PM
i liked Escape Goat a lot, but that came out in 2011. ..how many current games did i play this year!?! and what does it say that one of my most enjoyed games feels like it could have more or less been released in the late '80s?

maybe the Crimsonland remake, but the original version was released in 2002. hmmm.

i really like the pre-alpha for Wreckfest (aka Bugbear's Next Car Game), but it's still not officially released, so it doesn't count.
16  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Have you ever written anything substantial? on: November 15, 2014, 10:04:50 PM
i used to write rambling stories longhand, then jumped up to multi-page 'giant monster' adventure tales in grade school when i first encountered a computer word processor (Bank Street Writer on the Apple ][e!) - it made writing so much easier and more fun that i just kept going. probably my greatest achievement was creating the word "psychadelic", which was my made-up label for someone with psionic powers. (a classmate who was much more worldly than me in sixth grade asked me after reading my story 'so are they on drugs?' and i had no idea what she meant. she told me that 'psychedelic' was a real word, and i didn't believe her.) i eventually came to the realization after struggling to come up with non-action scenes that these stories were laughably terrible, so i stopped.

i have no ear for dialog and no patience for plot - drawing and other types of visual art are my strengths, not storytelling - so what i write now tends to be intentional nonsense that no one would be interested in reading... but it helps with clearing out and resetting the creative processes in the brain.

(i live in Seattle, so i guess i HAVE to hear this one by dint of proximity as KEXP is going to play it to death... speaking of proximity, anyone like Mary Timony's projects? she did Wild Flag the other year with Janet Weiss and Carrie Brownstein, and she's got a new band with some other people called Ex Hex.)

what are the 'half-baked' parts?

which audio jack/soundcard is the headset plugged into, and which are the speakers plugged into?

do you have the mic settings in the (i assume Windows) control panel enabled/adjusted properly?

as a native Minnesotan, i am obligated to like this group. anyways, they had a reunion tour (Kurt, James and Rob) back when _Synthesizer_ came out in 2008; saw them here in Seattle playing at a really crap venue (El Corazon).

if you haven't heard Psykosonik yet, do so. also from Minnesota, they released two albums in the early 90s on WaxTrax! and were clearly inspired by InSoc, but take a more overt 80s 'cyberpunk' tack in the lyrics (at least for the first album - they tone it down on the second). both albums are free streaming on the Soundcloud page.

I find it interesting that the second house looks cookie-cutter to some of you.  I don't think I've ever seen a house in California that looks like that, and there's definitely nothing like that in New Mexico.  While I do like house #1 better, I like house #2's stacked porch & balcony, and the sideways garage is neat.

Agreed.  To me, there's nothing "cookie-cutter" about either of those houses.

i'm referring to the interior, not the exterior... tho i'm not a fan of that either (second-story balcony aside).

#2 looks generic new-suburban-y. ugly boxy rooms. the walls look like they have that hollow pasteboard feel to them.

as for #1, i am a fan of over-engineering in general, so i hear what you say about the 'labor of love' that went into it.
