55 or so pages in and I am already sick of the Bobisms. I hate how everything is explained like the narrator is telling the story to a class of ten year olds. Show, don't tell. ARGH! Still, the 80's stuff is nice and nostalgic.

I'm surprised there aren't more negative opinions in this thread as I found the book to be rather poor.  Along with the Bobisms the main character is a major Mary Sue (or Gary Stu) if you will.  Nothing interesting is ever really done with the 80s stuff, and it's really mostly just name dropping or describing how something happened in a movie or game.  He goes well outside the 80s before and after with references as well, really it's just a geek affirmation piece, you like this thing right, well you know what it's cool to like it!

i agree that the book was absolutely painful reading - i had to quit it a third of the way through (which is something i hate doing, but when it has to be done...)

6  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Doctor Who: the original series on: March 19, 2015, 04:11:09 AM
for the past 25 years, Tacoma public television airs the episodes from the mid-60s to the late-80s on Saturday nights IN CHRONOLOGICAL ORDER, and the S.O. and i try to watch every week. (and i set the VCR to record if we're not home). KBTC has a special pledge drive every six months just for these reruns, as the BBC charges $30k a year for the privilege.

anyhow, i will say i have only ever seen one episode of 'new Who', but i am a lifelong fan of the original series. i grew up on Tom Baker's and Peter Davison's episodes in the late 70s and early 80s, so i always thought the fourth Doctor was my favorite (and Leela was my favorite companion), but having now seen a pretty sizeable portion of the shows, i think the second (Patrick Troughton) is the best. Romana was clearly the smartest companion, but she was a Time Lord, so maybe that's not a fair comparison... also, the original episodes with William Hartnell are pretty good, and quite a bit different in feel than later years - a good change of pace from a lot of same-y 70's plots.

i did some loans on Zidisha; it's certainly an eye-opening experience. from my first borrower:

"Apologies of having not payed my weekly amount to zidisha account,it has delayed due to the county government of Nakuru that swept away our stores on 29th December last year taking away the stock that was inside. They claim of having notified people to vacate the place for the expansion of the highway. We never received the notice from them.More than 3000 people have been affected me included.Apologies of not having paid and not notifying you at the same time.Am half way to bringing my stock back and move to a nearby store that i have constructed.Kindly i request that you give me two weeks to reconstruct myself and start paying my loan as usual.Apologies once again.Hope you understand what am going through"

Awesome, thanks for posting all that. Need to check out your PS as while I don't have any crashes, what I do have are odd background 'machine' noises / static that I hear with the headphones on when there's no other sound. Nvidia and Realtek here.

that's just electrical interference, isn't it? happens because the audio hardware isn't shielded/is too close to the computer's internals.

There was a PC game that predated Worms by quite a bit (a cookie to anyone who can find the name of it)

the original was called "Artillery"

(and in the most popular modern-day incarnation of this genre, we have Angry Birds)

Wow, I had no idea.  I wish I could see how many people are playing before re-buying it.  Thanks for the info.
I'm on mobile or I would pay the direct link.  Look up the game on steamcharts.  That will tell you how many peak and current players there are and it keeps track since the game went live.

Got the link.  Not a big group on steam.  Is this available through other stores?

http://steamcharts.com/app/217200

no idea - i still have the original CD and used to use Team17's WormNet (which is still up: http://worms.thecybershadow.net/wormnet/ ). i don't play online anymore, as people are too good. never got into 'proping'.
12  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Remember when Worms was good? on: March 14, 2015, 12:18:25 PM
that's because most people are still playing Worms: Armageddon, which was still being updated semi-unofficially as of two years ago:

http://wormsarmageddon.team17.com/main.html?page=supp&area=upda&file=16

with all the updates it has now, modern OS compatibility, new features, customization and current mod support, there's really no reason to bother with any other version. check out the readme, the changelog is huge.

ok, sounds like RAID 1 is a go. still researching, but for sure i'll be using Linux's software RAID rather than the 'fakeRAID' that the mobo's BIOS offers.
19  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / RAID 1 questions on: March 03, 2015, 04:45:33 AM
i'm building a little home server for the S.O. with Ubuntu and two identical HDDs. this server will be used for backing up a MacBook and media storage/streaming.

is it worth it to install this system with RAID 1 for data redundancy, or would setting up rsync from one drive to the other be a better idea?

Binding of Isaac: Rebirth

I actually have this on the PS4 and haven't really tried it yet, maybe I need to.  It looks weird...But I've heard great things about it.

the game is mostly a mystery when you first start it - you're supposed to figure out things as you go, and you're expected to die a lot (a lot a LOT at first). luckily it's made to be replayed, repeatedly.
21  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: A good, basic FPS? on: March 01, 2015, 10:10:00 PM
i'm really into the arcade-y FPS games, if they've been done well. here are my recommendations:

can't believe Serious Sam hasn't been mentioned yet. SS3 tones down the mayhem of the first games, but i enjoyed it after the first two levels (specifically, once you get out of the museum) - enough to buy the DLC expansion for it, which is something i NEVER do. the HD remakes of First Encounter and Second Encounter are for sure worth getting, if you haven't played them yet. SS2 is different in several ways, but i would also recommend it.

the original Painkiller is also good; wouldn't bother with the standalone 'expansion' titles. did not care for the next game from the developers, NecroVision.

Hard Reset also qualifies, even though it's clearly from a small studio with limited budget, so i give it some slack (and bonus points for releasing a native Linux version at launch).

finally, Will Rock, though about a decade old at this point and an unabashed Serious Sam clone, is still fun. terrible dialogue and plot points and the game is generally nonsensical in a not-good way, but those parts are easily ignored. Dee Snyder of Twisted Sister is the voice actor of the main character, what? the developers of this game went on to do Time Shift and later, the Halo: Combat Evolved remake for Xbox360 and the 'Master Chief' collection for Xbone.

for sure i can't see myself purchasing another Creative product again (tho i've gotten quite a few in the past) - they cut off support waaaay too early on everything they make.

Dumb question, but just got my first soundbar. Is there any reason I would need to plug the optical cables directly from bluray or cable box rather than through the tv?

i assume you don't have a receiver? if not, then one reason i could think of would be to listen to CD/DVD/SACD/etc audio without having to power your TV on!

Quote from: naednek on January 02, 2015, 05:04:12 PM

to piggy back on this.

I'm looking into getting a soundbar and selling my speakers/receiver.  I just built an HTPC and I don't believe I have optical on my TV or my HTPC.  Is that the only way to connect?

HDMI or analog audio RCA jacks. although the Sony Blu-Ray player my coworker gave me has ZERO analog jacks on it (which is ridiculous, in my opinion...)

RAGE (sp campaign)
Wreckfest (mp online)

maybe restart 1000 Amps.

s.o. is trying to finish the sp campaign in Destiny; dunno what she has planned for after that. she asked if she should get Dragon Age: Inquisition, to which i responded 'meh, dunno'.

I just bought FlatOut: Ultimate Cargage for $5 on Steam. Might be up your alley.

Picked this up today, downloaded it, went to fire it up, and...nothing.  It goes throughout the initial install stuff, then the window disappears and nothing happens.  Apparently this isn't an uncommon issue, something to do with how it was initially integrated with GFWL.

Hopefully I can get it to work.    icon_cry

Bugbear's Wreckfest is a lot of fun when playing online (one of the very few jokkis/folkracing games available!), but not a whole lot of content yet. at least the driving model and physics are solid. so for SURE check out the Flatout games (Flatout, Flatout 2, and Flatout: Ultimate Carnage aka Flatout 2.1), which are among the best of their kind available. i'm partial to the first one in the series, as it stays much truer to the jokkis spirit. keep far away from Flatout 3, which was not by Bugbear.

i would have also recommended DiRT 2, but it's no longer available on Steam. i guess DiRT 3 (rally) or GRiD 2 (street) would be acceptable backups, if you can't find it used.

i would have also recommended Blur (from the creators of Geometry Wars!), tho it too is no longer available on Steam (but physical copies can still be located). i am sure there are other arcade-combat kartlike racer games out there like this, but i don't know what they are.

trying to build a desktop computer out of cast-off/unwanted/old parts. i have the power supply, an AM2 processor (AMD 64X2 5200+), a few hard drives, 1GB DDR2 RAM and an artifacting-like-crazy nVidia video card i will try to reflow. i have a Gigabyte AM2 motherboard with some bulging capacitors that is super flaky with the power and video - looking to replace that.

alternatively, i can get a Socket 939 mobo for free, which means i'd need an appropriate processor for that.
