i have a rooted Moto Photon Q (it's kinda like a Droid, right?) as a work dev phone and it's certainly nice enough to use. i miss the slide-out keyboards.

5  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: It's Almost Thanksgiving (USA! USA!), What's your GOTY? on: November 23, 2014, 11:10:12 PM
i liked Escape Goat a lot, but that came out in 2011. ..how many current games did i play this year!?! and what does it say that one of my most enjoyed games feels like it could have more or less been released in the late '80s?

maybe the Crimsonland remake, but the original version was released in 2002. hmmm.

i really like the pre-alpha for Wreckfest (aka Bugbear's Next Car Game), but it's still not officially released, so it doesn't count.
6  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Have you ever written anything substantial? on: November 15, 2014, 10:04:50 PM
i used to write rambling stories longhand, then jumped up to multi-page 'giant monster' adventure tales in grade school when i first encountered a computer word processor (Bank Street Writer on the Apple ][e!) - it made writing so much easier and more fun that i just kept going. probably my greatest achievement was creating the word "psychadelic", which was my made-up label for someone with psionic powers. (a classmate who was much more worldly than me in sixth grade asked me after reading my story 'so are they on drugs?' and i had no idea what she meant. she told me that 'psychedelic' was a real word, and i didn't believe her.) i eventually came to the realization after struggling to come up with non-action scenes that these stories were laughably terrible, so i stopped.

i have no ear for dialog and no patience for plot - drawing and other types of visual art are my strengths, not storytelling - so what i write now tends to be intentional nonsense that no one would be interested in reading... but it helps with clearing out and resetting the creative processes in the brain.

i have the new album on hold from the library. (i live in Seattle, so i guess i HAVE to hear this one by dint of proximity as KEXP is going to play it to death... speaking of proximity, anyone like Mary Timony's projects? she did Wild Flag the other year with Janet Weiss and Carrie Brownstein, and she's got a new band with some other people called Ex Hex.)

The story is garbage and the voice acting downright amateur.

how bad is it, on a scale of "Resident Evil" to "The House of the Dead"?

my Samsung LCD monitor (from 2004, i think - has an NTSC TV tuner and composite/S-Video inputs) will sometimes go blank after certain screen resolution changes. needs to be powercycled in order to display again.

doesn't having a leaky roof for that long lead to mold growth?

what are the 'half-baked' parts?

which audio jack/soundcard is the headset plugged into, and which are the speakers plugged into?

do you have the mic settings in the (i assume Windows) control panel enabled/adjusted properly?

as a native Minnesotan, i am obligated to like this group. anyways, they had a reunion tour (Kurt, James and Rob) back when _Synthesizer_ came out in 2008; saw them here in Seattle playing at a really crap venue (El Corazon).

if you haven't heard Psykosonik yet, do so. also from Minnesota, they released two albums in the early 90s on WaxTrax! and were clearly inspired by InSoc, but take a more overt 80s 'cyberpunk' tack in the lyrics (at least for the first album - they tone it down on the second). both albums are free streaming on the Soundcloud page.

I find it interesting that the second house looks cookie-cutter to some of you.  I don't think I've ever seen a house in California that looks like that, and there's definitely nothing like that in New Mexico.  While I do like house #1 better, I like house #2's stacked porch & balcony, and the sideways garage is neat.

Agreed.  To me, there's nothing "cookie-cutter" about either of those houses.

i'm referring to the interior, not the exterior... tho i'm not a fan of that either (second-story balcony aside).

#2 looks generic new-suburban-y. ugly boxy rooms. the walls look like they have that hollow pasteboard feel to them.

as for #1, i am a fan of over-engineering in general, so i hear what you say about the 'labor of love' that went into it.

one of my aunts was super JW and sent my brother and i identical illustrated Bible Story kid's books (the ones with the painted illustrations... you know what i mean.) also forbid my cousin from playing Dungeons & Dragons with us, but we did it anyways. no judgement of JHWH came upon him for that crime, as far as i can tell. for a much later holiday, we received identical "Evolution... Let's Talk About It"-kinda books (which went unread, forever).

not really a criticism from me - but it kinda felt they should have gone 100% CG with this one, rather than the extensive green screening.

hmm. possibly i'm doing that, but i watch way more 'older' shows than newer. maybe i am more forgiving for the flaws of say, something that's 1970's cornball like Science Ninja Team Gatchaman over early 90's giant mecha.
37  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Anime thread of anime on: July 24, 2014, 08:05:13 PM
i recently got the first part of The Heroic Legend of Arslan on LaserDisc (for $1) and i liked it enough that i need to seek out parts 2-4. pretty nice animation, interesting characters, and an ok plot so far.

researching around, the other discs go for ~$40 each, so maybe i won't do that.

recently, i saw Detonator Orgun and GunBuster for the first time. those have not aged as well.

for new stuff, i was trying to watch Dusk Maiden of Amnesia which has some good moments of humor, but the gratuitous fan service and endless fawning of the female characters over the male lead is just sexist and annoying. i must be getting old.
38  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: [movie] Guardians of the Galaxy on: July 24, 2014, 07:39:25 PM
just saw this last night - technically, the most impressive Marvel film yet. nice resolution, good use of 3D in parts.

otherwise, your enjoyment of this hinges on your tolerance of a nearly non-existent plot, many cliches, quite a few dorky moments and a film that, overall, seems to be trying to make a parody of itself.

Is now a good time to mention that I spend most of my drive time listening to either the Bombcast or the Cagcast?

Even so, it seems impossible to have not heard "Happy" somewhere!

I would agree. I don't partake in "popular" music much but this song has raped my ears.

i would be super Happy to never have to hear it again in my life...
