new EVGA nVidia GTX 970 FTW is installed and nuDOOM looks a bit nicer (all settings maxed out now).
2  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Weekend Playlist - "Oh dear God, What Have We Done" 11/11 Edition on: November 13, 2016, 11:29:58 AM
Blood Dragon, since it was on my wishlist for a few years and it's now free from UbiSoft.

Shadow Complex, since it was in a recent bundle and i wanted to play it a few weeks ago, but realized i actually didn't have it...

Minecraft with the nephew. and then on my own. building a house out of the neglected building materials (diorite, andosite, granite...)

I'm a little late but if your willing to wait  I'll be replacing my EVGA GTX 970 FTW ACX 2.0 4GB within a few weeks.  Still runs like a champ and probably would sell it for a $100 to a forum member.

i will definitely go for that

http://hwbench.com/vgas/geforce-gtx-1050-ti-vs-geforce-gtx-780

unless i'm missing something, i am very doubtful the 1050 Ti is a 'much better' option. *if* the above is true, i could live with -4% 'raw performance' when the power consumption is better. other sites are giving the impression that this card isn't much better than the one i'm currently using.
5  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / worth upgrading from GTX 670 video card with i7-960 processor? on: October 31, 2016, 07:21:41 AM
i have what is now what is mostly an old setup, comprised mostly of secondhand parts. i'm still not seeing a compelling reason to get a new machine, so i'm thinking of keeping this going a while longer, but possibly with a (used) video card upgrade. i'm assuming i can go two levels up from the GTX 670 i got (used) two years ago: http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/gpu-hierarchy,4388.html

example: just tonight i saw a GTX 780 on Craigslist for $150 (replacement card shipped from EVGA, never opened) - would something like that be worth upgrading from a GTX 670 on an i7-960 setup? i was thinking the [GTX 780, 780 Ti, 970, Titan] tier would be best, but maybe i could go [GTX 1060, 980, 690, Titan Black] or higher if i overclock.

another example: i also saw on craigslist a GTX 670 for $90, which i probably could SLI with my current card.

The Talos Principle - just got back into it (and i shouldn't have stopped playing it). trying to crack some of the 'star' secrets. some of the Serious Sam asset re-use is hilarious.

since it is Halloween, going to also return to Painkiller: HD. and i recently got a few mobile phone game ports (to PC) for free; trying those out.

i would take prison architect.

keep riding it out. it'll resolve itself one way or the other. personally, i just keep jumping from unplayed/barely-played game to game until i find something - it may take a dozen or three, you never know.
9  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Other than gaming, what are your hobbies? on: August 23, 2016, 04:20:10 AM
music listening/collecting and concert attending...lots of music-related things. also computers (programming, Linux OS), drawing, board games (abstract strategy), volunteering for the local public radio station. dabble in astronomy, model-building and electronics repair.
stopped going to Tai Chi (Wudang style) due to starting to have a social life again. will start again soon.
i was going to say 'bonsai raising', but my bonsai is not doing so well at the moment...

it's been years since i've been able to put together anything resembling an honest list (without forgetting half of everything), but hmmmm. i'll think about some favorite albums and write them down in an unordered fashion.

i set up a dedicated Minecraft server recently, so i'm going to be playing with one of my friends tonight, and the elder nephew tomorrow. gonna saddle up my skeleton horse! and finally make an enchantment table.

i am in the mood for DOOM... wait, there's a palindrome here somewhere... but i haven't purchased it yet. i may try to get back into Hard Reset or Painkiller HD, since i've Serious Sam'med my way to completion for every single title in that series. frown

14  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: DOOM on: May 19, 2016, 10:29:18 PM
i'm in for this, but no gaming time right now (so no need to buy just yet). craving a new action shooter. tried to play Doom3 the other year and i got bored several levels in - happy to hear this is more like the original.

Letter Quest: Grimm's Journey Remastered also has really good reviews and may be a bit more straight forward typing game.

this is a 'word maker' game (like Bookworm or Boggle) and not a typing game - i always used the mouse to construct the words. (don't actually remember if you can* use the keyboard). it also gets quite difficult in later levels.

(no one wants to play with me in Typing of the Dead because it really is one of the games i'm best at - still, the final fight is incredibly hard. i was obsessed with this game for a while. - i have the original on disc for Dreamcast and PC [and the new version in Steam], and even have multiple Dreamcast keyboards/keyboard adapters.)

One more interesting tidbit on Youth Code, from the Pitchfork review of their album.  It was produced by Rhys Fulber of FLA fame.  Which explains why it sounds so much better than the first album.

not sure what this band is doing in this thread (i feel like there should be a non-genre specific music topic), but since we're here .. their material sounded very inspired by late-80s WaxTrax! sound.

also i'm putting this here for Gratch's amusement (or disgust)

Those of you who build your own rigs -- I'd love your feedback.   More detail?  Less detail?  Something I missed that I should cover?

are you looking to sell your old parts, by any chance?

Baroness Purple

pleasantly surprised by this one. it went from a 'meh' feeling when i put it on hold at the library to 'i would actually buy this' while halfway through. they changed their sound up and i think it works even better for this group. there's a good instrumental passage right in the middle of the album and "Shock Me" (is this the single?) sounds, oddly, like mid-90s Catherine Wheel.

Just an update - I did finish Grim Dawn (normal difficulty) so yay me! First game finished in 2016.

I'm now working on the second and third endings for Arkham Knight. There's a lot to do since I pretty much mainlined the storyline missions, but I'm making tremendous progress and hope to have that knocked out by the end of the week.

you make it sound like work...

32  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: PS2 emulation on the PS4 is an exciting prospect on: December 14, 2015, 09:16:16 AM
i still have my PS2 and original discs, i'll just play them there. The Mark of Kri is a pretty good title for those who haven't tried it yet - interesting graphical style, and the fantasy "Pacific atoll"/Polynesian setting hasn't been done very often (if ever...)

i had similar issues at a previous house - it was due to the coax cable running in the house not being 'cable' grade (only 'antenna' grade). seemed to occur more frequently in warmer weather.

this Serious Sam DLC on 'hard' difficulty is pretty difficult. i'm having to really struggle and be on the top of my game to clear some sections. it doesn't help that i still haven't gotten any good weapons yet; throwing a Highlander thrown at me when i only have the single-barrel shotgun is cruel. well, i guess that's what the chainsaw's for...

got Rogue Legacy for cheap, and put five hours into it so far. exceedingly difficult the first hour or so, but it gets easier (easier, not 'easy'). still haven't beat the first big enemy.

going to try out lawnmower racing in Wreckfest now

EDIT: using the lawnmower in a standard banger race (where everyone else is driving cars) will totally make you the target of a takedown within the first 10 seconds. i did last three laps on an oval, tho.
