8521  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: [movie]The Incredible Hulk on: June 16, 2008, 05:38:10 PM
Saw it on Saturday and enjoyed it.  It was good, matinee escapism.  The amount of action was good but wasn't bogged down by too much self-awareness (the problem with the first one, imho).

Although, maybe I'm just remembering it badly, but I could have sworn that Lee's Hulk looked less "cartoony" than the new one.    icon_confused

Also, after countless times seeing it in the movies, I've come to the conclusion that if you wear a baseball cap with the bill pointing forward, that automatically means you're trying to hide.  From now on I'm just going to call the police if I see someone wearing a b-cap in that manner....

it all depends on whose tit you want to suck from.  MS's tit gives bitter beer, like Natural Light, but Steve Jobs gives sweet vanilla flavored goodness, like ambrosia.

You might want to look around and see if there's any news of an updated Zune coming out soon.  IIRC it's been awhile since they updated the hardware.

the 80 gig came out not that long ago (last summer, if i'm not mistaken) so i doubt we'll see an updated zune anytime soon.
8523  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Talk me out of getting a Zune? on: June 16, 2008, 02:14:09 PM
I honestly doubt that Microsoft would bail on the Zune.  It's their only real foothold in the lucrative mp3 market and I think we all know that Microsoft would chew its own arm off before giving up on a chance to make some cash.   icon_wink

I love my Zune.  It's a 1st gen and I got it cheap but it's been a real tank.  It's been dropped, left in a hot car all day and used on many bike rides and it's held up just fine.  The only real complaints I have are the aforementioned annoying software used for transferring files to it (although nothing will ever be worse than itunes, imho) and some bad firmware updates that caused the thing to just plummet in battery life.  They fixed the latter problem in a later firmware update, though.

8524  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Call me Schleprock...now with updates on: June 16, 2008, 02:02:33 PM
Update:  I got my beloved Matrix back Friday afternoon.  The dealership put in a whole new engine.  They also put in a new battery while they were at it since mine was supposedly not holding a charge very well.  Total cost out of pocket:  120 dollars.  The rest was covered by the insurance agency.

I do have to say though, I get the distinct feeling that my dealership took the insurance company for every penny they could get.  The service manager at the dealership seemed to almost take pride in the number of things he got them to pay for.   icon_confused

Hepcat vs. The Angry Sushi Chef

So last night, in between marathon Law and Order: SUV viewings (seriously, does TBS, USA and TNT play ANYTHING ELSE during the week???), I decided I was going to get sushi for dinner.  I head to the hotel after work to change and then drive down the street to a Japanese restaurant I'd noticed earlier that day on my way to the client site.

The place is empty except for one young asian gentlemen waiter and an elderly asian woman behind the sushi counter.  I tell the young waiter that I'm there for take out and he gives me a list of items to order from.

I check off a spider roll, a spicy tuna roll and some rice.  I then hand it to the elderly asian woman behind the counter.  She snaps it out of my hands and throws it down on the counter in front of her.  I don't think anything of it and go back to reading my paper.  About 10 minutes pass and nothing's happening.  After another couple of minutes the elderly asian woman starts screaming like a banshee at the young guy.  They're screaming at each other in Japanese at the top of their lungs.  I'm only a couple of feet away so I move to a table to get away from it.  Eventually the waiter comes over to my table and just stands there apologizing and motioning at the woman.  I don't understand what's going on so I just nod like a moron the whole time.

After another minute or two I stand up and motion that I'd like to pay for my take out order in the vain hope that it'll hurry up my food.

"But you didn't get anything?" the waiter replies in a puzzled tone.

"What about the sushi I ordered?"  I say, indicating the sushi counter and the elderly harpy standing there in what I swear is a defensive lineman attack stance.

"She quit!  Sorry!"  he says.

Now I'm utterly confused.  It seems that the harpy from hell has gotten so angry about something that she's quit.  However, her version of quitting doesn't involve storming out.  Instead it seems to exhibit itself in much the same way a perturbed bull would if constantly prodded with a long stick.

"But...I...what...but..." I have no idea what to say, so I start to leave.   Then I hear this soul shattering shriek from the soul sucking she beast behind the counter.

"Wait!  She says she make you sushi now!" the waiter says, stopping me before I can make my way out.

"But...I....what....but...."  I got nothin' at this point.

Silently, I walk back to my stool at the sushi counter like a death row inmate heading to ol' sparky.  The waiter brings me a coke and I just sit there staring at it while Dracula's grandmother begins some of the most violent sushi prep I've ever encountered.

Eventually, she tosses my order in a bag and thrusts it at me.  I pay and head back to the hotel...

...and damn if that wasn't the best damn raw fish and soft shell crab I'd ever had.
8526  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Notes from the South on: June 10, 2008, 12:11:54 AM
A last minute client issue has sent me merrily on my way to South Carolina all this week.  As I lay here in my Comfort Inn hotel room, nearly catatonic from an overdose of Arby's Sauce and Curly Fries, watching The Astronaut Farmer on HBO and wondering what in the hell happened to Billy Bob Thornton's career; I can't help but draw some conclusions about this great state.

1) After a 2 1/2 hour drive on I-85 South I've come to the conclusion that South Carolina is a state built almost entirely by the income generated by Arby's franchises and fireworks stores.  Between here and Charlotte, North Carolina there are about 274 Arby's restaurants and 321 Fireworks stores.  Getting all hopped up on horsey sauce and attacking neighbor's with Roman Candles has to be a real issue around these parts.

2) Why are there so many churches on the side of the highways around here?  I envision the following event happening:

Dad:  Well, that was a great family vacation!  I really enjoyed...KIDS, FIRST UNITED BAPTISTS ON THE RIGHT!
Mom:  Let's get the kids baptized, honey!
Dad:  Great ideal!  And there's no real need to stop!  I'll just slow down and Jenny and Robbie can crack their windows and jump.  TUCK AND ROLL FOR JESUS, KIDS!
Mom:  We'll bring you curly fries and M-80's on our way back to get you!

3) I don't care who you are.  103 degrees is too damn hot for anyone.  If you say you enjoy this type of weather, I now call you out as a spawn of Satan and will advise a roadside church of your existence.  Expect to be attacked by the faithful any day now.

Okay, okay...i admit this countryside is damn beautiful.  I give you that.  But 103 degrees????   Seriously???

Anyway, I want you all to remember me in your prayers this week.  I'm less than one block from an Arby's and my Jamocha milkshake addiction is coming back in spades right now.  There's a good chance that the next missive I submit around these parts will be from the Betty Ford Rehab Center's dessert addiction wing....

There is a drive-in in West Chicago called the Cascade Drive-in that my wife wants to go to.  That isn't the same one, is it?

I don't think so.  The one I was referring to is off Cicero near the Midway Airport.  I'm not even sure it's still open.  However, the one time I went to see films there it was like driving into a Crips vs. Bloods gathering.

The Cascade appears to be a good one.  I checked this site and it draws generally favorable reviews.  I may have to check it out myself.

edit:  ah, i found it.  looks i was referring to the Bel-Air Drive In and it's now gone.

You could also try the approach that one of my friends used and proved successful. Go ahead and invite him to live with you, while he's asleep sedate him so that you can move him to a room which you plan to imprison him in, keep his legs and arms bound so that he can't move too much. Feed him, whatever, but keep him clean of drugs for 30 days. He won't go to the police after because he'll be thankful that you helped him with his problem.

Only problem I have with the game is that there's a lack of player interaction.  It seems like everyone was playing their own single player game for the most part.

when we play everyone communicates what they're going to do, as well as letting others know what gates they're going after, monsters they're clearing away, etc..  i see what you mean, however.  but if you get a group together that treats it the way you would a good rpg session of CoC, it becomes more coop based.

8539  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Updated: Sad day for a friend on: June 04, 2008, 06:57:24 PM
So I have a friend who was a successful male nurse after college.  Male nurses are rare so they command a pretty decent price in the health care market (at least at that time they did).  He was making almost 6 figures a year working for a private home care company.  Unfortunately, he's always been prone to anxiety attacks and had issues with drinking.  Putting him into a job with access to pharmaceuticals was, in hindsight, a really bad idea.

He got in a car accident and started taking pain killers.  After he recovered, he kept on taking the pain killers.  Eventually, his wife left him, he lost his job, and the police arrested him for forging scripts.  He was sent to rehab and then to jail for a year.  When he got out he moved to Columbus, Ohio and got a job with a home security company.   Unfortunately, he kept on drinking like an Irishman on St. Paddy's day.  He then added Klonopin to the mix.  He got a prescription from a doctor for his anxiety attacks (he says).  It was soon after that that I told him that every time I talked to him, he sounded high as a kite.  He laughed it off and said that the drinking wasn't an issue since he could quit any time and that the Klonopin was prescribed by a doctor so it was alright.  I pointed out that his doctor most likely gave him a doseage limit that was a bit more specific than "a handful when you feel like escaping reality", but he kept telling me, "I'm a nurse, I know what I'm doing."

Fast foward a few years to this week.  He takes two Klonopin AT WORK and then falls asleep at his monitoring station.  His boss walks in to find him asleep with alarms going off around him and can't wake him.  He eventually has to punch him in the arm to rouse him.  He then sends him home.  Today his boss drops by his apartment and tells him that he has to let him go.

My friend calls me, upset.  He relates his tale and then tells me he has three options:

1) He can look for another job in Columbus.
2) He can move back with his family in Cleveland as they've been suggesting he do for a while.
3) He could move to Chicago and live with me!

I told him, in no uncertain terms, there's NO WAY IN HELL you're moving in with me.  Dropping you into my neighborhood in Chicago would be like putting a kid in a candy shop.  He asked, "So you honestly think I'd be out buying drugs if I lived with you?".  I told him I had no doubt in my mind whatsoever that he would.  He then pointed out that he had no money to buy drugs and I told him point blank that I truly believed that he would sell everything I own and steal the rest to get drugs.  I told him I (and many others) had been trying to get him to seek help for the last few years but that he never listened.  I told him I felt bad for him but that he'd brought this on himself.  I then told him that he needed to move back in with his family so he had people around him 24x7.  I then told him to quit the damn drinking and toss the Klonopin.

I don't think he wanted to hear that.  I think he wanted me to welcome him into my life here in Chicago.  But that's not going to happen.  I hope that doesn't sound selfish, but I can't take care of an addict.  I fear that he would eventually destroy me as well as himself.  I told him I'd talk to him anytime he needed someone to listen to him, but that I was done being anything but frank with him from now on.

Now I feel kind of bad, but I honestly think I did the right thing.  Going back on that now would only end up hurting him in the long run, IMHO.

I don't think the "visible prison" is a good idea at all. Griefers grief for attention. Putting them on display in a glass box is like giving them a stage. It's exactly what they want. Attention. It's more like a reward than a punishment. I bet you people would end up going to prison on purpose. It's a 'look at me' crowd and what could be better for them. Remove the visible part of the punishment, and you might have something. No chat either, not public or private.

-Cota

other players would have to make the effort to actually visit the jail, however.  it's not like the griefers are being placed on a stage where everyone has to see them.  personally, i would probably stop by the jail every now and then to taunt those folks, but i would probably be able to count the number of times i did so on one hand after a year.

Wait...people really walk out of movies?  I thought that was just something stupid people made up.

I know people walk out of movies.  I've seen it in TV.

two movies i've walked out on and the reasons why:

1) Andy Warhol's Bad - Watched it at my college theater with some friends.  Walked out when they showed a baby fall from a 10 story window and then nibbled by a passing dog.  Warhol may have been a decent painter in the realm of pop art, but he was utterly horrible as a filmmaker.

2) Caligula - Again, at the college theater.  Walked out when they went from showing Peter O'Toole (who i worship as an acting god) to displaying two centurions giving each other oral pleasure in an alcove.  I'm not a prude and I'm not homophobic, but I admire O'Toole so much that it just made me feel angry for him.  He couldn't have known that the film would eventually just become (really bad) pornography.

wait what? i literally JUST checked before coming here and it was still up as "on the boat" - not even a shipping notice

do you mean you have it in hand, you saw it in stores or what???

from the ffg forum for arkham horror:

It arrived in stores yesterday. I picked one up today and ran a solo testrun through it. Epic battle variant makes GOO combat more interesting, and rifts sure can get nasty if left unattended too long.

I found it listed as "IN STOCK" on the coolstuffinc.com site so ordered it.  make the run to your local gamestore and demand they hand it over to you!   icon_wink

I thought the Problem Child trilogy got progressively better as it went on.  So many unanswered questions were left for the audience after the first film that I knew they'd need a second and perhaps third film to fill in the film's backstory.

I was happy to see the makers of the films didn't sacrifice their artistic integrity as well.  The depth of emotion displayed during the "fart noise" scene in PC 2 was, imho, a real attempt to revitalize cinema in such a way that hadn't been seen since Citizen Kane or Revenge of the Nerds 2.

All in all, I still blame John Ritter for dying as it effectively brought an end to this series of arthouse hits.
