Yeah, Columbus had a "Com Festival" (which I was informed was short for "Community Festival"...which I then immediately translated into "Corn Fest" for anyone who asked what all the hub-bub was about.  I even added that this year they were paying tribute to Sweet Corn:  The most succulent of corns).

As for the disorganized feel, I got that same vibe.  One of my games simply said the location was "Customer Service" which resulted in a friend and I walking all over the place asking everyone we saw what the hell THAT meant.  Thankfully we eventually stumbled upon the right location by accident.

I'm not buyin' that excuse.  The Saturday night car wars game was in the tabletop room.  Since there were only two large rooms (the tabletop game room and the miniatures room), you basically had a 50/50 chance in finding us.  Considering that the car wars set up was roughly the size of michigan AND you had my personal contact info, it's safe to assume that zarathud and I mean nothing to you.  You hate us, you really hate us.  You make baby jesus cry.

Despite the fact that no one recommended it yet, go through the Halo series. All can be had for cheap, and coop play is excellent. (only 3 offers online coop).

psst...halo 3 is on my list.   icon_wink

Watching bits and pieces of the first one when it came out, I hated it.  Sitting down and watching the whole film to get the context, i actually understood what the intent of it was.  Verhoeven is a subversive son of a bitch (watch Robocop for further evidence).  If the first film had come out post 9/11 it would've received far more notice.
8526  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: And there goes another one. on: June 24, 2008, 06:55:31 PM
I'm on my third one now.  It's an elite and it was purchased back in February.  I believe that makes it one of the Falcon models.  I'm really hoping this one holds up until they release a new version of the xbox, however I realize that the failure rate on the 360 is just too friggin' high to realistically expect that.   icon_cry

That being said, I try to unplug mine at least once a month now and use canned air on all the vents to keep it as dust free as possible.  Hopefully that will extend its life by a bit.

They've just started a new anthology called "Fear Itself" Thursdays on NBC (10pm EST). Two episodes so far. I haven't been overly impressed with it yet, but it's a horror anthology on primetime network TV so I've been supporting it.

We've been reviewing the 'Feat Itself' episodes every week at Horror-101. So far, they've been pretty good. Thursdays at 10pm. Check it out, folks.

you guys liked 'em?  I've been disappointed, actually.  Maybe that's due to the involvement of the Masters of Mediocrity (sorry, Masters of Horror) makers, though.  i just feel like we've seen all these stories done to death.  What they need to do (in my opinion) is grab some classic short stories from talented genre writers like Bloch and Matheson that haven't made it to the screen.  The material they're working with now just strikes me as tired.

Outside of Rock Band, I'd second (third?) Bioshock, Mass Effect, Oblivion, and give a tentative recommendation for Lost Odyssey.  There's some excellent XBL titles as well.  I'm partial to Puzzle Quest, Rez, and Settlers of Cataan.

yeah, i forgot about some of the excellent live games.  i second the puzzle quest and catan suggestion, while adding carcassone.

So I get this oversized box today at my office address.  Unfortunately it's covered in giant, hand drawn hearts, looks like a belated Valentine's Day gift from a secret admirer and has a return address with a man's name.  I open it up and find a 12" plastic Elvis Presley as portrayed in the movie Bubba Ho Tep...giant sunglasses and jumpsuit included.

...so now everyone in the office wants to know when my life partner and myself are heading to California.

All I can say is...thanks PR_GMR...you bastich.   Tongue

Anyone else have issues yesterday with the temple of mitra in the noble district?  the clipping was turned off or so badly broken that people were being "trapped" in the temple after falling through the floor when entering.  Some were able to get out by using the fountains to launch themselves upwards, but most were just using the asura skill to teleport out.

I used to work with a guy named Caesar whose parents were from Guatemala.  When they came to this country they vowed to raise their children as Americans, however.  They tried to only use English around the house, although they did teach them to be proud of their heritage.  They just wanted them to assimilate as well as they could since they themselves felt the pressures of being immigrants.

We both were assigned to a long term job in El Paso, Texas a few years ago.  We'd heard about the cheap tequila that could be purchased in Juarez across the border, so we crossed over one night to stock up.  On the way back, the border guards stopped us to check out our purchases.   They quickly passed by me and fixated on Caesar.  For some reason, they had trouble believing he was American.  The conversation lasted about 5 minutes and went like this:

Guard:  (says something in Spanish)
Caesar:  Huh?
Guard: (repeats the same thing in Spanish)
Caesar:  Dude, seriously, English.
Guard:  Where are you from?
Caesar:  Jersey
Guard:  Jersey, huh?
Caesar: It's in the U.S..
Guard:  I know where it's at!  How come you don't speak Spanish.
Caesar:  Cause i'm from Jersey?
Guard:  Don't be smart!
Caesar:  Alright.
Guard:  You sure you're not from here?
Caesar:  Pretty sure I'm from Jersey.
Guard:  Alright, go ahead.

The guard seemed genuinely upset at the time that Caesar wasn't fluent in Spanish.  He later told me that he knew SOME Spanish but that he really only had one rule:  if he heard the word "muerte" he'd run.

Hmmm....just installed the demo for Depths of Peril and, while it seems to have installed successfully, it gave me a "Can't find network resource" error towards the end of the installation process.

Did you install the demo directly from us (Soldak)?  If you did, I don't know why on earth it would give you that error.  There shouldn't be any resources required outside of the installer and it doesn't try to access the internet or anything.

i was installing it directly from the demo link in impulse.  i wonder if that was what caused the problem?  in any case, it works so it obviously didn't cause the install to fail, just made it look like it did.  played about an hour and i was mighty impressed.  good game!

I just can't get into Radiohead.  I don't know why.  I like similar sounding bands from time to time, but for some reason I just find them grating.  Tom Waits I can listen to all day, though.  His gravel voice just makes me feel inexplicably good.

Coldplay suffers from the same unjustified dislike as Radiohead on my part.  The only thing I can think of is that I've inextricably associated the personal lives of the band members with their music and that causes me to be biased against them as I often find their antics disingenuous or outright obnoxious.  However, I understand that musically they're very talented and that my dislike, as mentioned, is a very personal and subjective issue.

I don't understand this statement.  Are you saying the movie should be in the 60s?

i think that's what he's saying.  however, the comics themselves constantly update characters for new generations (john byrne's superman, for example) so why should movies not be able to do the same thing?

Additional profiles still adhere to the parent member's number of checked out dvd's though, don't they?  they don't give you the ability to have more than 3 out at a time if that's your membership level, right?
8549  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Netflix why????????? on: June 19, 2008, 01:43:57 PM
The only reason I can see for doing this is that they think they might make more money if people open new accounts for other family members now.  It really is a stupid and annoying move, though.  It shows a lack of respect for the customers.

I was pretty ticked off when they got rid of the "Releasing this week" feature they offered off the New Releases page.  It listed all the dvd's being released that week in a handy checklist format.  Since they got rid of it, I've had to flip between dvdtalk.com's release list and netflix each week...which is a pain in the butt.

Alright, this year you have no excuse to avoid the chicago gang, you dork.  We'll be at the Drury hotel attached to the convention center.  Zarathud and Seppe will be getting there Thursday afternoon, while I'll be arriving either Thursday night or early Friday morning.  We're all scheduled for the Arkham Horror game at noon on Saturday and the Car Wars game at 6 pm that same day, so try to get into them if you want to play with us losers.
