Basically RP servers act as a somewhat effective filter for screening out 10-year old WoW-kiddiez who like to name their characters SirFartsALot.

Thanks Sky, that makes me feel a bit more comfortable...although I also feel Reemul brought a more appealing idea to the table in that I've always wanted to ask guys pretending to be chicks in an mmorpg to "look upon my sword".

Since this is becoming the go to thread for war questions, i have one on etiquette.

due to the wanderers choice in servers, i'm planning on making a character on ostermark.  this will be my first real experience with an RP server in an mmorpg (i tried one in wow but quickly abandoned my character after a few days), so i'm not sure how i should behave.  is there a guideline somewhere with suggestions on how to talk, act, etc..?

thanks for any suggestions!

without having to go through this entire thread, i have a quick question....

for someone who didn't play the beta or preorder or anything, can i just go to D2D and download the game and start playing today or do i have to wait a couple days?   is today just for beta players and those who preordered?  i was in Best Buy and looked for a copy and they didn't have any yet.

i don't know about the D2D question, but i would imagine that if you wanted to play today for sure, you could just pick up a pre-order box at best buy.  I was at my local BB at lunch and there were a ton of those things still on the shelves.

just use the pre-order key that's on a slip of paper inside the box at the mythic account page (after creating an account, of course) and you should be good to go.

For those of you getting authentication errors this morning when trying to update your game for the SE, try changing the password.  It may be a coincidence and the authentication servers came back online during the 3 minutes it took me to change the password, but it worked for me at 7am Central Time (SE was supposed to start at 7am Eastern, so I waited an hour before trying to find a resolution).  After numerous authentication failures, I just went into my mythic account page and changed my game account password.  Patcher started up right away.  Like I said, could be coincidence and they just started them up an hour later for SE head start, but it's worth a try if you're still having issues.

(And the only reason I was in the movie was because the movie theater dropped an early screening of the movie that I wanted to see, and this was the next thing showing...)

Please remember that you berated me for hating Clerks II.  Now you will be ridiculed as you ridiculed me.  Grab the edges of the table and get ready....

I saw it saturday and while I enjoyed it, it still pales in comparison to many prior coen efforts.  the characters were just too one dimensional.  pitt's character, for example, had no back story whatsoever.  not even a slight hint as to what makes him tick.  i usually look for these details in a coen film but found them missing this time around.

As i said, i enjoyed it.  I laughed out loud more than once.  But i can't recommend it for anything beyond a rental or a bargain matinee.

oh, and the funniest parts of the movie involved J.K. Simmons.  He was hilarious in his befuddlement.

but wouldn't that interfere with those who wouldn't purchase the game, but would download it anyway?   icon_wink

I was careful to point out that I'm talking about people who wouldn't have bought the game anyway, in which case I think the crime is victimless.

I'm also not trying to be a jerk, but you seriously don't believe that, right?  I mean, that's just wrong on a level that cannot even be debated.  The victim is the person who created the item.  By downloading it illegally, you're taking the money that would potentially be in their pockets from that sale away from them.  And this crap about theft not applying to anyone who wasn't going to purchase it anyway is just ridiculous.  If they weren't going to purchase it, why are they downloading it?  that's like me stealing tampons.  If I wouldn't purchase tampons (being a guy), why in the hell would I take them for free?

if you download it, you wanted it.  if you wanted it, the potential for a sale exists.  end of story.   icon_eek

Look, i can't stand the DRM used by EA in the aforementioned games.  However, I also place the blame squarely at both EA's AND a software pirate's feet.  EA for overreacting and instituting knee jerk reactionary anti-piracy measures, and the warez scene for making them react at all.
8139  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [DRM] Red Alert 3's DRM crapola revealed on: September 15, 2008, 06:10:22 PM

No, it isn't theft.  It's copyright infringement which is a different thing.  If someone downloads a game they would never have bought anyway, no harm has come to anyone and nobody has lost anything.  That doesn't fit the definition of theft that I know.

Huw, that's theft.  If I go out and steal car I never intended to purchase, that's theft.  True, this is digital media, but the same concepts still apply.  Saying that Copyright Infringement is not technically theft is like saying that Manslaughter is not technically murder.

and it's not victimless.  the software company that paid developers to make the game are the victims.  the distributor that sought to reclaim the expense they laid out for the right to distribute the game are the victims.  ultimately, those of us who have to deal with draconian DRM applications as a direct result of people downloading and not paying for games are the victims.
8140  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Re: Warhammer Online headed to Open Beta on 9/7 on: September 15, 2008, 05:52:16 PM
if it's anything like LOTRO or any of the other MMORPG's I've played during a "head start" type program, then yes...the retail box (or full online version if purchased in that manner) will have a specific key intended for post head start use.

after the head start period ends they'll shut down access to users who don't have this key.
8141  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [DRM] Red Alert 3's DRM crapola revealed on: September 15, 2008, 05:21:17 PM
actually, that would be theft.  i don't like the drm situation ea is pushing on people, but i'm not going to let that oversight on their part cloud the nature of piracy.

Seriously though, aren't we just about through with the whole "Vampire hates being vampire, moans to anyone who will listen, eventually becomes detective in order to make up for his past sin of taking someone's parking space 74 years ago, meets art school drop out chick who thinks copious amounts of eye-liner is perfect for all occasions, falls in love but won't have sex because he's still thinking about that parking space, relates tales about meeting every famous person who's lived since 1400 BC in between moaning about that parking space even though logically he would have had to have been 2,301 vampires to actually do so, eventually dies giving up a parking space."?

I'm really looking forward to rolling up a witch hunter.  i've always played one since the elder scrolls days.  something about a solomon kane type character really gets my imagination soaring.  will this be a class that's welcome in groups?  or will i be, much like my days as a rogue in WoW, the last guy picked for a group?

My treadmill has "shocks" on it.  My 12 years in the Marine Corps. left me with a funked out left knee; running normally really leaves me hurting.  You could try a stairmaster and use one where your feet do not leave the steps so you have very little or no impact.

To add

A guy I work with swears by Glucosomine Condroitine (?) he has bad knees and runs every morning.  He said it took a week or two to build it up in his system but he takes one every day and his knees dont hurt anymore.  I have never tried it myself.

I like to bike during the summer, but running for some reason has always been something I really enjoy.  I'll give that Glucosomine Condroitine stuff a try.  thanks for the recommendation!

I need to start running at the Y instead of outdoors.  My knees, while holding up so far, get this little stabbing pain in them every once and a while.  It's very brief, but my guess is that it's a sign that the impact is something these old legs could do without.  It's probably going to get worse if I'm not careful.  The indoor track at the aforementioned Y is cushioned.

Eventually the game goes from "Alright, I got a kill!" to "Alllllright...I got...oh man....is that a midget outside my window?  what the hell is a dangerous midget doing loose in my neighborhood...wish I had some twizzlers...(4 minutes pass as I nod off, controller in one hand, something I've mistaken for a twizzler in my other)...wait....where was i?  oh yeah...I got a kill!!"

On a serious note:  I just noticed that Live has the map pack for COD4 on sale for 400 points this weekend.  If you're like me and were too cheap to buy it at 800 points, now's the time.
