8041  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Heroes Season 3 on: September 23, 2008, 10:29:44 PM
Mohinder has never once struck me as disappointed in the fact that he had no powers.  He's always come across as someone driven to understand his father's research and, after discovering the fate of his sister, to help those who were a danger to themselves or others.  Yet within 2 minutes of ep 1 of season 3, he roughly grabs plague chick and starts proclaiming that he can now GIVE people superpowers.

No, I'm sorry, that came from left field.  It was just sloppy writing.  They need to get together in a war room, hash out where they think they're going, then turn the bus in the right direction.  Right now it's heading for a crash.

My best guess on what's going on is that someone's boyfriend or girlfriend suggested that it would be fun to have everyone go "dark" this season so they could wear black leather outfits a lot.  So now they're rewriting all their characters so they can justify the purchase of 23 Matrix style trench coats.

edit:  i was also laughing at Mohinder, after 2 seasons of intensive research in both a lab and in the field, suddenly realizes within that aforementioned 2 minutes that it's (AHA!) adrenaline that's the key!

Where did you get your diploma, big brain...the Hasbro School of Science and Small Appliance Repair?

I loved it!  Mohinder has always been an irresponsible scientist.  He's always been more concerned about science than ethics, so I was not surprised to see him try the serum.

Overzealous, yes.  Wanting to give everyone powers?  That came out of the blue.  Wanting superpowers himself?  Another one out of the blue.

Mohinder was written completely out of character.

They need new writers...stat.   icon_wink

Odd that so many of you don't like it.  I enjoyed most of it (especially the fact that they played an extra episode).  Thought the story moved at a good pace and was enough drama and action in the mix.  Definitely couldn't compare it to season 2 imo.

not really all that odd since i believe the majority of reviews (both amateur like those found here and professional tv critics alike) are calling it a mess.

the change in the way characters act is worthy of complaint.  I noted this on OO, but when the hell did Mohinder turn into a power mad scientist?

It's just a mess, they need to fire the writers they have and get someone on board who understands the basic concept of continuity.

I love Supernatural.  It's just come together as a decent successor to Night Stalker, IMHO.  The interaction between the Winchester brothers, the use of classic rock, the underlying story arc that doesn't stray too far from the essentials established in the first season...the writers and producers have done a great job of keeping it on track.

Yes, because you would be honoring the threads name sake.

Okay, I'm back.

So...how are things everyone?

Now that is dedication.

I couldn't keep it up.  The intense pressure an Adam Baldwin undergoes in this day and age was just too much.  During the four minutes I spent as Baldwin, I was inundated with marriage proposals from over 2000 women, asked to star in a remake of the Godfather, offered a seat in the senate AND told that I was to replace Lincoln on Rushmore.

It's just too much for one man.  I never knew...

Not a day goes by that I don't start to create a new thread on Adam Baldwin, get about halfway through, then decide it may not be received well and just delete it.  One time I actually thought about going out on a limb and including something about the unrelated but similar sounding Baldwin brothers, but I'd been drinking all day and thought I'd better just step away from the keyboard and sober up a bit before doing something like that.  Whew...glad common sense won out THAT time!

My 401k is just tormenting me.  I've ALWAYS put the max amount into it, and to open the maintenance page for my account and see that I'm losing my investments faster than I'm contributing is really depressing.  I know that realistically, it's not analogous to actually losing money, but man is it bringing me down.

Other than that, things are just generally slow at work right now.  We have a couple of prospects in the pipe, but right now I'm just doing busy work (catching up on some internal IT documentation, brushing up on my SQL, etc.).  I work for a small firm so my experience is limited, unfortunately.  If something were to happen to this place, I'd be hard pressed to return to a large company.   I also doubt I'd remain in Chicago.  I'm a small town boy who's just about had his fill of urban life. icon_frown

Whedon is a rarity, however.  The man's talent is so friggin' great that he hits the ground running with anything he does.  Since we can't clone the man and have him write every show on television, we have to hope that other writers develop the same level of writing over time that Whedon just whips out of his sleeve on a minute's notice.   icon_wink

It all began way back in October 2007 when the Sci Fi Channel announced to the Eureka staff that 1) we would have an official commercial sponsor this season, one that was kicking in a lot of dough and would therefore 2) require tons of product placement throughout Season Three.  We were also told that 3) ONE EPISODE in Season Three would have to incorporate a storyline in which the actual product HAD to save Eureka somehow, or at the very least, be INDISPENSABLE to Carterís Act 5 solve.

Well, I just get the feeling that they are slapping a story together and then -- ok like in the last episode, there was a killer out there- and then he was a killer that was an old cold case, that oh just happened to be related to crazy doctor's work years ago, that just happened to be a case that had a huge emotional effect on the FBI agent (forget her name now), then he was and experiment from a co-worker of crazy dude and low and behold it is part of the Pattern....what?

are you talking about the pilot?  they went to get the doctor because he was involved in similar research years ago.  that wasn't random.

if you're talking about the latest episode, the "Pattern" is the underlying theme. the team was directed to this case by higher ups who are part of this conspiracy.  it remains to be seen how random this was.  you're crying foul before the rules have been explained or even explored.  for someone who loved the x-files, that seems rather strange.   icon_wink

At least if this show were like the X Files it would be good.

Wow, talk about a random-no plot - makes no sense show.  It really is just not a well written show.  Still recording but that cancel button is getting closer to being pushed.

define "random-no plot".  i'm not sold on the show as of yet, but i don't understand what that means.  there was a plot, it fell within the realm of the show's premise and it made sense (albeit in a goofy ass manner at times).

as for holding it up to a standard using x-files as the measuring stick, i hope we haven't all forgotten the sheer stupidity of the conspiracy plot that chris carter tried desperately to weave into the show even when it became so moronic that it made your head spin.

i'm giving the show some leeway as it finds it footing.  i'm hoping it gets rid of the writing staff it currently has in favor of talent that wasn't culled from that horrible Night Stalker redux.  I'm also hoping they flesh out the mad doctor a bit more and don't end up making him a comic foible.  he needs to have an undertone of menace to him, imho.

Not to completely derail the thread here, but...

How does the tv series Torchwood compare to this show?  I've had two different people mention it to me.

Previously to just now looking it up, I had never even heard of it.  Are Fringe and Torchwood similar?

I absolutely loathe Torchwood.  The guy who plays Captain Jack is just pure ham.  In small doses on Dr. Who, he's likable.  Given a leading role and he's just cheesy beyond belief.  Everything he does ends in a pose and his constant mugging for the camera just grates on me.

The stories show promise every now and again, but then the writers are forced to shoe horn in sexual content because they want the show to be "edgy".  They also seem to be under a direct mandate to make every single person on the show bisexual...even guest stars.  I'm still waiting for house pets to start copulating on screen with like genders.

Fringe, at least so far, has been less goofy and (with the exception of jackson) a little better in the acting department.

As for content comparison, Torchwood is the Red Shoe Diaries version of X-Files, while Fringe is the Misfits of Science version of X-Files.
