I took hepcat from an old flintstone's episode where Fred becomes a hipster.  It just cracked me up as a kid.

I wish I had some intricate, highly detailed history for the name....but it all comes down to me laughing my butt off when someone called Fred by that name.

...i'm easily amused.

I take it the new site will incorporate the webcam that I've set up in my bathroom?

This will help immensely in the area of funding as people will pay a lot of money to block that feature.

Now you've got me all excited - my copy of BSG arrives on Tuesday.  How many players did you have?

all games I've played have been with 5 players so far.  With 6 players (and I think maybe 4) you get to use an extra rule for sympathizers, but I've never had the chance to try it.

I really think it shines the closer you get to 6 players, though.

8012  Gaming / Analog Gaming / Re: [FFG] Android... on: December 27, 2008, 10:17:02 PM
Okay, I had my annual christmas board gaming marathon with a group of childhood friends earlier this week.  The clear winner was BSG.  This was my third time to play and this time it just all clicked.  The first two times we were struggling with some of the rules and we had a player who didn't understand the concept of "cylon" in the context of the game.  This last time it was just perfect.  The guy we thought was a cylon turned out not to be, and my friend's wife who I thought was doubtless a human turned out to be a cylon.  Much, much fun.

Pandemic also turned out to be a winner.  I really enjoyed it.  We put in about 3 games and lost the first two.  It's pretty cool the way the game can suddenly turn on you when you think you have it beat.

Dominion was a close third.  I still love this game but I think people are getting tired of me pushing it on them whenever we all meet up  icon_wink.  If you don't already have it, I highly recommend it.

Finally, I got to play a full game of Touch of Evil (from the folks who brought us the great Last Night on Earth board game).  Although last in the order of games in my opion, it was still great fun.

Someone earlier mentioned Axis and Allies.  I've been drooling over the anniversary edition that was just released.    If i could justify the 80 bucks or more it costs, and was sure I could find willing players in the chicago gang, I'd be all over it.

edit:  oops, i think the anniversary edition of AA was what greeneggs was talking about.

8014  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: [movie] The Spirit on: December 19, 2008, 06:07:01 PM
Those characters are pretty big ticket items in the superhero world, though.  The spirit hasn't had a significant presence on comic book stands in many, many years.  The only reason this one got screen time is because Miller is a big time fanboi of Eisner's work.  I just wish he was a big time director to boot.   icon_cry
8015  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: [movie] The Spirit on: December 19, 2008, 02:52:34 PM
ah dang it.

Variety says:

plunges into a watery grave early on and spends roughly the next 100 minutes gasping for air. Pushing well past the point of self-parody, Miller has done Will Eisner's pioneering comicstrip no favors by drenching it in the same self-consciously neo-noir monochrome put to much more compelling use in "Sin City."

The Hollywood Reporter says:

truly a mess. Fans of "Sin City" and "300" will populate theaters for the film's opening, but boxoffice will fall quickly. The film's campiness might then pull in a different sort of aficionados -- those who celebrate films such as "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" for their silly acting and overripe dialogue.

I had hopes it might still turn out to be good, but I have yet to see even one positive word written about the movie.  I'm a huge Spirit fan and this sucks because it effectively means there will either never be another Spirit film, or we won't see another one for at least a couple of decades.  Box office receipts may save it if people are desperate and there's nothing else playing (see Scary Movies I, II, III, IV, XII and MXXII), but I have a sneaking suspicion that that won't happen with this one.

Gothic 3 (always wanted to go back and finish it with the community patch)
Fable 3 (almost done)
Fallout 3 (for some reason I burned out after 30 hours.  now i'm trying to work up the will to go back.   icon_confused)
The Witcher Enhanced (chapter 3 and going strong)

Always on rotation:

Burnout Paradise
Catan - Arcade
Ticket to Ride - Arcade
Sins of a Solar Empire
Med II - Total War
Space Rangers 2

8018  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Winter Blast Coming to Portland on: December 18, 2008, 06:44:28 PM
about 7 years or so ago Chicago got hit with one of the worst snow storms on record.  it was also new year's eve when the worst came down.  i had a friend and his wife over for movies and drinks and a relatively quiet NY eve celebration that turned into a prison situation around 3am.  We literally couldn't even open the front door the next day as it was blocked with at least 3 feet of snow.  The city was shut down.

After about 3 hours of listening to those two fighting over some annoying crap, I went for the Chivas.  I polished off a half bottle by 1pm.  By 3pm I decided it was me or them so I crawled out the bathroom window (full bottle of Chivas tucked inside my coat) and started stumbling towards the movie theater complex about 4 blocks away.  My plan was to get away from it all via whatever friggin' movie was playing that day.

After about a block, I realized that absolutely no one within a 5 mile radius was as stupid as I.  I felt like Charlton Heston in The Omega Man.  If it weren't January in Chicago, I would've expected to see tumbleweeds.

Naturally the theater was closed.  So I basically meandered around a frozen wasteland, drunk off my ass, for 8 blocks.  To this day I'm surprised they didn't dig up my frozen corpse come spring....

Pete's got a point there.  If Chicago gets hit as badly as they say we are, I'm not coming into work tomorrow.  I need to know what the official beer for that situation is.  Can a brother get some help here?

I can only hope that the worst thing to happen to me is a 5 percent pay cut in these times.  I don't relish having to look for a job in this economy if they have to start letting people go around here.

Although on the other hand, it would give me an excuse to go back to school and switch career paths.

Supposedly Chicago is going to get a blast starting tonight and lasting until late tomorrow.  I'm driving back to Ohio for the holidays on Saturday so I hope it's run its course by then.  I'd fly back but gas prices are so damn good right now that I want to actually enjoy a nice road trip while I can still afford it without selling off vital internal organs.

BSG's a great game, so you won't be disappointed.

I'm gonna take a pass on Android as it seems it might be a difficult sell with the chicago gangs/ohio gangs i play with.  I did FINALLY get a copy of pandemic a couple of weeks ago.  that friggin' thing was out of print for ages.  i'm heading back to ohio for christmas week and i've got friends staying with me for 3 of those days.  i'm going into board game overdrive starting sunday.   icon_biggrin

what happens when eventually everyone just has the power to absorb other people's powers?  we have (well...had) 3 of them at one time.  after a few generations everyone will have a superpower that really doesn't DO anything ("Hey bob, I just absorbed your absorption power!"  "Nice one, ted!")

Man, I thought the trailers looked terrible. Always seemed more like an SNL spoof of Sin City then a real movie.

I grew increasingly disappointed with each new trailer, unfortunately.
8032  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: [movie] The Spirit on: December 16, 2008, 06:30:07 PM
Early word on the film is that it's a disaster.    (and that's the second early review...the first was much harsher) icon_frown

i was afraid of this.  from the trailers, all i was seeing was miller trying to redo sin city.  i don't think the style that rodriguez used for that film should become the defacto method for all comic book films, but if you're going to ape it at least try to add something of your own to it.  unfortunately, miller doesn't seem to have a good enough eye for film to do so.

There's also a funny trivia note on imdb that Ando doesn't speak any Japanese and is doing his lines phonetically. He's Korean.

Yeah, I recently saw the actor who plays Ando on some other tv show playing a Korean cop (I think it was CSI).

# - 3
Streak - 14 months

The first two exchanges were done using the Best Buy replacement plan.  Before my second one died however, MS extended the warranty on the 360 and it was made somewhat comparable to the BB replacement plan.  I opted to forego the BB plan in favor of the MS warranty and use that extra 50 bucks that would've gone to the BB plan to get an Elite.

So far, so good.  Although I have absolute faith that this system will eventually go belly up.  I use it for so many damn things that it's not even funny.  It's my dvd player, my digital media player (both audio and video) and my gaming console.  Microsoft created a very shoddy console and maintained that level of shoddiness for more than a few generations.  However, they did such a friggin' stellar job with Live and the extended functionality of the 360 that I'm sure I'll keep on replacing the damn things as they break.

I just hope they eventually create one that actually isn't pre programmed to fail.
