Came into work at 6:30 this morning so I could leave early.  Picking up a copy of the game at CC as well as a giant burrito at a nearby Baja Fresh on my way home.  After that, I'm out of reach for the night.   icon_biggrin

I actually enjoyed Dark Sector.  The Glaive was just such a fun weapon that it really made up for the weaker components in the game.  I finished it, which is something I rarely do with games.

Well, it didn't take long before my baser instincts took over.

Currently, my version of Albion is riddled with statues of me doing the hip thrust maneuver....
7964  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [Poll] Fallout 3 - PC or Console - You choose!! on: October 27, 2008, 05:48:55 PM
I'll do what I did with Oblivion:  I'll get the 360 version tomorrow, then about a year from now when I've finished the main quests and some DLC's, I'll pick up the PC version on the cheap at EB or something.  Sure, it's double dippin', but it's for a worthy company.   icon_biggrin

Harkonis and I met up in game last night for about 2 minutes.  He simply stopped by to tell me he had the collector's edition and that I was a loser for having only the standard edition.  Much like he does in any game we play together, he was in it to make me cry.   crybaby

Weird thing is, about 5 minutes after we parted ways, I still could hear him every now and then.  At one point I think he was having a conversation with someone else...

...that or he has imaginary friends sitting on his couch with him during play.

I guess I don't fully understand how "Orb Friends" work in this game.   icon_confused

As for the game itself, I have to admit to being underwhelmed at first.  However, last night I was able to actually put more than an hour into it and I can see where it shines now.  You can't approach this like a bioware rpg.  To me, it plays almost like a sims/rpg hybrid.  I've got a dog to train, people to impress, jobs to excel at and...almost as an aside...an adventure to play.  Once I got into that mindset, I found myself happily gallivanting across Albion.

p.s. i'm REALLY tempted to turn off the glowing trail quest helper and just play the game for the sake of playing, not for "winning" at this point.  anyone have any pros/cons for doing that?  will it bite me in the butt?

Picking my copy up at BB in about 30 minutes.  However, I'm a little bothered by two things pointed out in the gamespot review:

1) money is practically meaningless as it's incredibly easy to become rich.  having a sense of accomplishment when I buy some flashy new weapon is one of the highlights of an RPG to me.

2) death is simply an brief stop in the gameplay and then you're back up and fighting again.  the only penalty appears to be scars you acquire from losing.  if i go evil, this would be meaningless to me.

I'm still getting it and I'm sure I'll enjoy it.  but those two points are sore spots for me, right now.

Don't forget that you can by businesses and buildings, and from what I've seen they're pretty expensive but I'm not sure what the return on doing so will be.  However, I don't think money was ever a problem in the first game either.  As for dying, I don't think I died once in the first game (or even used the auto-Rez potions), so combat has always been fairly easy if you play smart, remember that you can block and use your potions.  This time around my favorite combat spell, Assassins Rush (teleport a short distance towards or behind your enemy), is missing so that might change things.

My goal is to have a Knight type hero (in Hal's armor) who never loses a fight.  Scars?  Tats?  Whazzat?

I've been saving a BB gift card for Fable 2, so that's a definite.  I was able to resist Dead Space last week after the store I stopped at to pick it up was out of the game.  My wallet was able to talk some sense into me on the drive home after that.

I'm interested in Far Cry 2, but I don't know whether to get it for the PC or the 360.

Definitely picking up Fallout 3 for the 360 next week, though!

God, Dash Rip Rock.   Saw them in San Francisco years and years ago.  Great little band.

In the area I grew up (middle of Ohio) there were a TON of local rockabilly bands. To this day it's still my favorite form of music.

I had a little mini-marathon with Rifftrax and Battlefield Earth, Roadhouse and Star Trek V recently.  I still prefer it to Cinematic Titanic, which is odd since I believe Joel is a master at delivery.  Mike is a better writer, though (imho).  When it comes down to it, no matter how good your delivery is, if you don't have decent material you're gonna tank.

It works, don't get me wrong.  However, the number of times the textures would just "pop in" during a scene were annoying.  Sometimes my character would exit his house to find out that the entire front of his building was just a white slate until he moved a certain direction.  It was just a graphical nightmare at times.

 icon_eek

Were you playing the PC version on a 486?

 icon_lol

no, i replayed a few parts to see if i could get different outcomes, i restarted about 3 times at about 2 hours or so in because I wasn't sure about whether or not to kill the kids (never thought I'd write THAT in a post), then I got my butt kicked on the final boss so frequently that it took me about a dozen tries or so to take him down.  In addition, the environment was so fantastic in Bioshock that I often found myself simply wandering around looking at things quite often instead of trying to advance the story.

Plus, I'm notoriously slow on games most people finish quickly thanks in no small part to my addled brain.
7981  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Dead Space on: October 16, 2008, 06:00:07 PM
Darn you all!  This game sounds EXACTLY like the kind of game I've been waiting for on the 360.  I'm TRYING to be good and only pick up Fable II and Fallout 3 though.   icon_cry

couple of questions:  I know that reviews are saying between 12 and 20 hours of gameplay, but I play REAL slow.  Bioshock took me almost 25 to 30 hours.  Will I get the same kind of game time out of Dead Space?

I picked up a copy of this at Gamestop for about 15 bucks just prior to GTAIV's release.  I stopped playing after about 2 hours due to the extraordinary number of graphical issues I experienced during that time on my 360.  Hopefully they'll address them with this release and I'll get a patch for my copy to boot.

Country music died the day Garth Brooks took the stage....

...with the exception of Lyle Lovett and a select few who still captures that unique sound from days gone by.

Give me Hank Williams, Roy Acuff, Chet Atkins and Patsy Cline any day over most of the current crap.

but for the most part, shows like Buffy/Angel, ST:TNG, etc have shown you can write a show for 7 years and maintain a level of consistency from week to week.

I always loved on Angel how they would play with the whole "You have to invite me in first because I'm a vampire" mythology.  They actually poked fun at the fact that they were sometimes inconsistent in using it over the years.  If I remember correctly, at one point a character brought this rule to Angel's attention and his reply was something along the lines of "it's more a guideline than a rule".   icon_lol
