There's absolutely no reason this woman couldn't go out and buy a copy of Windows Vista and get it installed on her computer system after the fact, so I have zero sympathy for her. She's looking to blame others for her problems - plain and simple. Just because you can't figure out how to use the microwave, it's not Best Buy's fault for selling you the microwave.

She might not have had the money.  Also, your analogy is a bit unfair.  There's a bit of difference between hitting a few numerals on a keypad and then pushing a big button that reads "COOK", and installing an OS on a computer.  The way you describe the sales rep makes me sympathize all the more with her, to be honest.

As long as these purchasable items do not hobble the base game with their absence, I don't understand why it's so upsetting?  You can choose to buy them, or you can choose not to.  When I buy a hot fudge sundae, I will sometimes opt out of the nuts and whip cream expansion pack.  I don't then leap over the counter and beat the crap out of the guy manning the scoop because he had the audacity to try and charge me more for this add on.

edit:  of course, if i was offered an ELITE nuts package, I might be tempted.  That would just be too sweet to pass up.

stopped at one today and they only had two copies of GH: aerosmith for the ps3 @ $50.  nothing else for any system this gen.

I know they have it at BB for 49.99 for the 360, so I'm assuming they have it for the ps3 at that price as well.  They also have GHIII for the 360 for 39.99 (the bundle with the Les Paul wireless) for 39.99.  I picked up the latter more out of curiosity.  I've always been curious about the attraction of the GH style games.  I figured for less than the price of a controller, I can now find out.

edit: i was wrong... it's actually 39.99

edit 2:  whoops, i may have misread your post and thought you were looking for this.
7809  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: [TV] Prison Break - Fall 2008's Best Unwatched show? on: January 13, 2009, 08:38:51 PM
It suffered from the Twin Peaks syndrome.  Twin Peaks was initially written down on paper from start to finish as a one season show.  There was no expectation that it would go beyond that.  When "Twin Peaks Fever" hit, it took everyone by surprise.  Naturally, the network wanted to drain as much cash out of this as possible, so they had the writers go back and rework it into a multi-season show.  When season two began to show signs of half-ass work and the audiences began to drift away, they ended it.

Prison Break was great for one season...maybe two.  Beyond that it was like keeping a favorite grandfather on life support, even though he was suffering and longed for death.

I'm calling it now, Janeane Garofalo (hardest to spell ever) is the mole.  The 24 Rule is that female characters are either dumb, crazy, evil, or dead.  She seems smart, and they're setting her up as semi-clueless and innocent, which sets her up nicely for the big reveal that the whole thing's been an act.  The new FBI lady seems competent, and it would be too obvious for her to be the mole (though not entirely unlikely), so I say she's dead before the halfway point.

Note that Chloe so far is the one exception to the 24 Rule, and it wouldn't surprise me to see her offed this season either.

Janeane Garofalo is so horribly miscast in this show that it's difficult to suppress laughter when she shows up.  She looks like a domestic abuse victim and gives everyone a look that says, "I really liked Heath Ledger's character in The Dark's my impression of his scene with the mobsters at the beginning of the film!"

I don't know, I'm not feelin' the love so far.  It just seems like they've got a template posted up in the writers' room and they're simply referring to it for each plot point.  I hope they break away from their formulaic approach, but I'm not optimistic.
7815  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: 24: Season 7 (starts tonight!) on: January 12, 2009, 09:25:53 PM
I had a minor revelation last night while watching 24.  In the past, I've always found the filler stories to be annoying.  I found them to be mostly weak and unsatisfying in light of the main story.  However, it hit me last night that 24 couldn't survive without them due to the show being framed in real time.  If it weren't for the cutaways to alternate stories during extended periods of transportation or bathroom visits in the main story, we'd have a show that consisted of numerous shots of Jack sitting in the passenger seat of a car going, "So...Bob was it?  How about those Colts?".

Forgot to check in on this one after it was released, what with all the holiday madness.  So off I went to check for reviews.

Oh man, 14% at Rotten Tomatoes   icon_eek

It's not just that it's obvious from the train wreck onscreen that Miller hasn't ever truly directed a movie before; it's hard to tell if he's ever even seen a movie before.

First, Robert Rodriguez tried to make a Frank Miller movie. Now, Frank Miller is trying to make a Frank Miller movie. (Advantage: Rodriguez.)

The style is willing. But the spirit is weak.

a $1 rental might be TOO much to ask for this one.

I think the takeaway from these replies is that being in this person's life can only lead to trouble for you.  Is he a childhood friend?  A family friend?  A school friend (from his actions, I'm going to assume not a college friend)?

You say he's "good" but is he someone who really wants to change?  Or are you just setting yourself up for disappointment after disappointment in trying to help him?

I recently had to make a tough choice similar to this when a friend I'd known for years fell back into drugs yet again.  No matter what I did, he just kept going back to it.  I finally had to just let him go.  He's now jobless and living with his mother at 43 years of age.  If that doesn't scare him straight, I don't know what will.  Your friend may be the same way.  Prison may be the only way for him to realize that he's screwing up.  Sounds harsh, but it's really the only answer sometimes.

Picked this up on sale at BB for 29.99.  I wanted it from day one but I'm trying to save some cash on games.

Played the tutorial and a bit of the campaign and then went online for an automatch.  Fully expected to get some kid who would pick on my newbness.  Imagine my surprise when I got a player who asked if I was new and then proceeded to give me tips, helping me out with suggestions and tactics for that map.  What a world of difference it makes when you meet a good bloke in a game.  I'll definitely have to keep practicing though...I really sucked.   icon_frown

God I love that movie.

Holmes (speaking to a small audience that has gathered around him): I'm reminded of the curious case of the Manchurian Mambo...
Watson: Holmes, could I have a word?
Holmes: Yes, what is it?
Watson: I believe that was the Manchurian Mamba.
Holmes: Mambo, mamba. What's the difference?
Watson: Well, very little, except that one is a deadly, poisonous snake, while the other is a rather festive Carribean dance.
Holmes (returning to his audience): It was a night like any other, when suddenly a knock came at the door. I opened it, and there were these Manchurians, doing a rather festive Carribean dance...

i wonder if perhaps some damage wasn't done to the unit when taking out the battery?  i read a few forum posts during the "crisis" on wednesday that were complaints from folks who'd bent something they shouldn't have when removing the battery.  supposedly it's not the easiest to do on those systems (i haven't done it because I haven't needed to so far <fingers crossed> ).

I waited to hook mine up until about 9am on New Year's day and it came right up after it had enough juice.  From what I'm reading, that's the case for most 1st gen zune users.  I got nothin' if it's still freezing at the same spot on yours.  Did you try to take out the battery or anything before microsoft issued their "wait until tomorrow" fix?
7831  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: 1st Gen Zune Owners Get Screwed on: January 02, 2009, 07:07:01 PM
Try letting it power down overnight.  It may still have enough charge left that it's not fully rebooting when power is connected to it.  Leave it off the PC while it discharges and then try plugging it into you computer via the usb cable.  It will show the image of a power adapter on the screen of the zune while it powers up, but then it should boot when it has enough of a charge.  Also, make sure the date and time on your computer is correct.

...of course, someone will point out that my zune is full of nothing but 1335 copies of the same song.  but in my defense, "the wheels on the bus go round and round" is a multifaceted song that works on so many levels.
