I WOULD have impressions if I wasn't spending 4 hours trying to decide what characters to roll up.   icon_biggrin

Unfortunately, Lich King hit the shelves first so I'll be playing that for a few months.  However, I fully intend to come back to LOTRO for a spell when things settle down.  Sounds like they added some great content!

They've vowed to go back to what made the show good - focus on characters and character moments - but in all honesty I think it's too late for that.

It's never too late!

Next episode opening scene:

Mama Petrelli abruptly sits up in her bed in the middle of the night.  "What a horrible, progressively worse, and internally inconsistent dream I just had!  We must not let this happen."

Plot continues on a different path from the point of the season 1 finale, and we pretend season 2 and 3 never happened.

Yatta!

...then Patrick Duffy walks out of the shower and we cut to Bob Newhart waking up next to his first wife.

after Pushing Daisies gets canceled one of the better writers said he'd return to Heroes.  still, I'm enjoying the season for the most part.  it's become a cheesy syndicated show that stumbled into a prime time slot.

And there's the injustice of it.  A phenomenally well acted and well written show like Pushing Daisies gets canned (most likely), while a show that exists now solely because a network can make more money off a promise of quality displayed only in the first season carries on.   icon_mad

I honestly doubt they can salvage Heroes at this point, even with new blood.  IMHO, the only way they could turn it around is to destroy the entire cast of characters and reboot it with fresh ideas.  It's gotten THAT bad.  I mean, it's Smallville and Moonlight bad at this point.

I take it back:  Heroes (at least this season) is shaping up to be one of the best comedies on television.  It's comedy gold, I tell ya.

I almost bust a gut laughin' when Sylar displayed his brand new ability:  The power to "Dr. Phil" away other's abilities.

Seriously, the writers HAVE to be cracking themselves up in the war room these days.

Writer 1:  Okay, he was almost pure evil in the first season, right?

Writer 2:  Yeah.

Writer 3:  Okay, bear with me on this, how about we make him NOT evil and give him a spot on The View!?

Writer 4:  GENIUS!  Talking hand puppet, you've done it again!

Saw this Saturday with some of the gang.  I noticed it on a web site for horror movies about 6 or 7 months ago and posted about it on OO at the time, so I've been waiting for a while for it.

Simply put, it's the best damn vampire film to come along in years.  It's full of dread, humor and pathos.  The characters lead bleak lives that are reflected in the communist era style buildings surrounding them and the overcast skies that always hang over their heads.  The actors who play Oskar and Eli are amazing, the director has an artist's touch when it comes to filming snow and ice (those two things almost become characters in the film, they way they're represented) and the relationship that builds between the two main characters is bittersweet.

I highly recommend seeking this one out, if you have the means.

To be fair, the girl was probably predisposed to hurting herself no matter the catalyst.  If it hadn't been this movie, I'm sure something else would have set off her action.  Blaming popular media for things like this trivializes the real cause behind her psychological problems.

it's not generating revenue for anyone (as far as I know) so I don't think anyone's losing sleep over any SLA's for the site.  It's just a group of friends who get together to gab about games and pick on each other, so a little outage here and there ain't no big thing.
7787  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Re: Web server needs? on: November 14, 2008, 09:37:49 PM
Check out http://colofind.net/ .  It's a search service that helps find data centers for colo near the requesting party.

As for the other questions, I'd say yes to the firewall.  An unprotected web server is just asking to be used as a bot for a spammer in this day and age.  Plus, the connection back to the database would also be at risk if someone compromised the front end web server (and trust me, that'll happen MUCH MUCH MUCH quicker than you 'd think).

Also, you may want to ssl protect the web server (go to www.instantssl.com for cheap certificates and great "how to" information).  that way you can close off port 80 and just have everything come through port 443.  encrypted data is your friend.   icon_biggrin

when you say "sql" are you referring to MSSQL or something like postgresql or mysql?

anyway, hope that helps out!

As for Christmas, don't get wrapped up in the materialism.  Money isn't the only way to express affection during the holidays.  I bet your family and friends would appreciate something heartfelt instead of expensive.  and if they don't, they weren't really friends to begin with.

...of course, you're friends with peterock, so just get a bottle of Aquanet at your local Walgreen, put a bow on it and wrap it up with a Heineken.  viola!  happy pete.

Maybe they're not so minor?  I see a good many of you in this thread making complaints about things when they haven't even finished the story of what you're complaining about.  I have also seen instances where you complain about something and then something happens in a later episode that negates your complaint (Hiro stabbing Ando, for one...guys in here complaining that Hiro would never kill Ando...and guess what?  He didn't).

I wish that were true beyond the one instance you brought up.  Unfortunately, the writers aren't up to that challenge.
