If a copy-protection could be used that not only works, but also presents only a tiny inconvenience to the paying customer, I'd be all for it.  Hell, Starforce almost made the grade! slywink

but wouldn't that interfere with those who wouldn't purchase the game, but would download it anyway?   icon_wink

I was careful to point out that I'm talking about people who wouldn't have bought the game anyway, in which case I think the crime is victimless.

I'm also not trying to be a jerk, but you seriously don't believe that, right?  I mean, that's just wrong on a level that cannot even be debated.  The victim is the person who created the item.  By downloading it illegally, you're taking the money that would potentially be in their pockets from that sale away from them.  And this crap about theft not applying to anyone who wasn't going to purchase it anyway is just ridiculous.  If they weren't going to purchase it, why are they downloading it?  that's like me stealing tampons.  If I wouldn't purchase tampons (being a guy), why in the hell would I take them for free?

if you download it, you wanted it.  if you wanted it, the potential for a sale exists.  end of story.   icon_eek

Look, i can't stand the DRM used by EA in the aforementioned games.  However, I also place the blame squarely at both EA's AND a software pirate's feet.  EA for overreacting and instituting knee jerk reactionary anti-piracy measures, and the warez scene for making them react at all.

No, it isn't theft.  It's copyright infringement which is a different thing.  If someone downloads a game they would never have bought anyway, no harm has come to anyone and nobody has lost anything.  That doesn't fit the definition of theft that I know.

Huw, that's theft.  If I go out and steal car I never intended to purchase, that's theft.  True, this is digital media, but the same concepts still apply.  Saying that Copyright Infringement is not technically theft is like saying that Manslaughter is not technically murder.

and it's not victimless.  the software company that paid developers to make the game are the victims.  the distributor that sought to reclaim the expense they laid out for the right to distribute the game are the victims.  ultimately, those of us who have to deal with draconian DRM applications as a direct result of people downloading and not paying for games are the victims.
7724  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Re: Warhammer Online headed to Open Beta on 9/7 on: September 15, 2008, 05:52:16 PM
if it's anything like LOTRO or any of the other MMORPG's I've played during a "head start" type program, then yes...the retail box (or full online version if purchased in that manner) will have a specific key intended for post head start use.

after the head start period ends they'll shut down access to users who don't have this key.
7725  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [DRM] Red Alert 3's DRM crapola revealed on: September 15, 2008, 05:21:17 PM
actually, that would be theft.  i don't like the drm situation ea is pushing on people, but i'm not going to let that oversight on their part cloud the nature of piracy.

I thought season 2 was great.  however, in this third season they seemed to concentrate more on character development and it was a bit more introspective than I like from my venture bros.

however, the worst venture bros is still 10 times better than most other animation (hell...i'd even say live action) shows on the air.

I honestly think I'm the only person who really didn't like the movie, so I'm not planning on watching this.  However, I'd be interested to hear other opinions on it as it airs.  I may be wrong about it, who knows.

as for the movie, i just thought it stated "racism is bad" without any nuance or poetry.  it was all so blatant that i felt the movie was grossly overrated by critics.

I plan on seeing this right after a hasty trip to Sweden for a special operation I like to refer to as a "Guy-ectomy"....

Seriously though, aren't we just about through with the whole "Vampire hates being vampire, moans to anyone who will listen, eventually becomes detective in order to make up for his past sin of taking someone's parking space 74 years ago, meets art school drop out chick who thinks copious amounts of eye-liner is perfect for all occasions, falls in love but won't have sex because he's still thinking about that parking space, relates tales about meeting every famous person who's lived since 1400 BC in between moaning about that parking space even though logically he would have had to have been 2,301 vampires to actually do so, eventually dies giving up a parking space."?

Well, after a bit torrent download of the client that appears to be borked, I've finally (after 5 restarts of the download) got a steady download from fileplanet.  I'm about 70 percent done.  Should have it by tonight.  I only have the SE edition, so I'll be on Tuesday after work.

I'm really looking forward to rolling up a witch hunter.  i've always played one since the elder scrolls days.  something about a solomon kane type character really gets my imagination soaring.  will this be a class that's welcome in groups?  or will i be, much like my days as a rogue in WoW, the last guy picked for a group?

Well, I've been wanting to go 64 bit ever since I got this duo core 6600.  If I make the leap, it'll probably be before thanksgiving.  i'll poke around the forums and make sure all my favorite games will run.  if i'm going to go 64, I may as well give vista a shot.  i've been interested in directx 10 for a while.  plus, i work in IT as well and should give it a shakedown beyond the VMware images I maintain for client testing for our apps (although i am definitely not pushing it to our employees until i have no choice  icon_wink).

However, I do appreciate the link and will definitely refer to it when I make the jump to vista.

My treadmill has "shocks" on it.  My 12 years in the Marine Corps. left me with a funked out left knee; running normally really leaves me hurting.  You could try a stairmaster and use one where your feet do not leave the steps so you have very little or no impact.

To add

A guy I work with swears by Glucosomine Condroitine (?) he has bad knees and runs every morning.  He said it took a week or two to build it up in his system but he takes one every day and his knees dont hurt anymore.  I have never tried it myself.

I like to bike during the summer, but running for some reason has always been something I really enjoy.  I'll give that Glucosomine Condroitine stuff a try.  thanks for the recommendation!

I need to start running at the Y instead of outdoors.  My knees, while holding up so far, get this little stabbing pain in them every once and a while.  It's very brief, but my guess is that it's a sign that the impact is something these old legs could do without.  It's probably going to get worse if I'm not careful.  The indoor track at the aforementioned Y is cushioned.

I've quit mid-game not due to my K/D ratio (which usually hovers around 0/2,397), but because I eventually get so drunk that I start shooting at things like signs, birds and anyone who I think may enjoy Patrick Swayze films just a BIT too much...

...Kato...I'm looking at you.

Eventually the game goes from "Alright, I got a kill!" to "Alllllright...I got...oh man....is that a midget outside my window?  what the hell is a dangerous midget doing loose in my neighborhood...wish I had some twizzlers...(4 minutes pass as I nod off, controller in one hand, something I've mistaken for a twizzler in my other)...wait....where was i?  oh yeah...I got a kill!!"

On a serious note:  I just noticed that Live has the map pack for COD4 on sale for 400 points this weekend.  If you're like me and were too cheap to buy it at 800 points, now's the time.

I think Sacred 2 takes the cake.

Not only is it using the same DRM, modified (unlimited re-installs, 2 activations but only one can be online at a time), but .... you're not purchasing the game, you're purchasing a license for use.  Thus, your license is not transferrable.
This just ensures I pick Sacred 2 up for the 360 rather than the PC.

+1

I was going PC until I read that.

by the way, do you get 30 days free with Warhammer like you do with all other MMORPG's?  The reason I ask is that the wording on the info for the head start program for preorders seems to say otherwise, although that could just be a case of bad writing.

Glad you don't mind taking the time 2 years from now to find the correct number, sit on hold for god knows how long, try to interpret whatever foreign accent the outsourced support person uses into English, then calling back 10 minutes later when they inevitably screw it up.

But hey, I do the same thing for my T.V., my sofa, any dvd's I purchase....

is this a deal breaker for me?  probably not.  It is, however, annoying and I won't pretend that it doesn't bother me somewhat.  Especially after the 10 minutes it took me to purchase Star Rangers 2 Complete off Impulse this past weekend, secure in the knowledge that I actually own it from this point forward without having to jump through any hoops if I decide I want to install it on more than 3 computers in the next 2 years (not an uncommon incident for most folks around these parts).
