Your expectations for film making are going to make Uwe Boll a rich man, my friend.

That makes no sense.  If this thread has done nothing else, it has established that I am a more critical movie goer than you are.  Of the movies in question, you have enjoyed more of them than I have.  Logically (and by 'logically', I mean in terms of the level of logic displayed in this thread), it follows that you are more likely to enjoy a Uwe Boll movie than I am.

wow, talk about nonsensical.

there have been two movies in question:  Wanted and Shoot 'em Up.  Two.

You "win" the argument because in your head you're always right.  this will serve you well in life, as i'm sure it already has.

I'm still chuckling over your assertion that because you liked Shoot 'em Up that you're a more critical movie goer than I.  It's like stating to the world that you should take over for Ebert when he retires because you liked Earnest Goes to Prison over Earnest Goes to Summer Camp.   icon_lol

Thanks for the laughs, though!

Your argument seems to be that because it had what could perhaps be described as 'low' aspirations that it couldn't be bad...  for me, it quite clearly WAS bad.  Horrible, even.  My enjoyment of Shoot 'Em Up speaks to my enjoyment of what the genre COULD offer... point being, it's not the opinion of someone who thinks that all over the top action movies are bad on principle...

Define what aspirations you assign a good action movie and perhaps this conversation can have some substance.  As it stands, we're purely in the realm of personal taste at this point.  Assigning the status of "truth" to yours is ridiculous.

You speak of potential in an action film.  However, the only potential you seem to be expecting is...well...action.  I felt both both films delivered on that.  If you were also looking for a challenging story (or something you haven't mentioned so far) to justify the action, then why belittle Wanted while giving a free pass to Shoot 'em Up?  Purely because you felt that Shoot 'em Up was built from the ground up with a bad story?  and that the director knew this?  Your expectations for film making are going to make Uwe Boll a rich man, my friend.

Pitch Black was a much better film, imho.  Chronicles had some great moments that could have been fleshed out, but they leaned too heavily on the "messiah" plot for my tastes.  Keeping Riddick an anti-hero without mystical overtones would've made the film much better.

A movie that is tongue in cheek often employs silliness of plot as a part of the overall effect.

<edited to be 90 percent less aggressive since that wasn't my intent...it was just pre-lunch talk   icon_biggrin>

Let's just put it this way:  you're operating under the assumption that those of us who enjoyed it were expecting to feel challenged by the plot.  It was based on a comic book about a guild of super assassins.  I don't believe any of us were expecting to walk out of the theater talking about the story.  We enjoyed it for what it was, just as we enjoyed Shoot 'em Up for what it was:  a light popcorn flick for a saturday afternoon matinee.  The focus of each and every commercial for both films was decidedly on the action.  That should serve as some indication that the makers of Wanted weren't out to draw in the same crowds as those found in Terms of Endearment.

7725  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: [Movies] Wanted impressions on: December 04, 2008, 05:05:58 PM

Thinking it is horrible has nothing to do with the far fetchedness of the premise.  It's just a really bad movie with a really bad plot, crappy dialog, and cardboard performances.

Shoot 'em Up never took itself seriously though.

his outburst never once mentioned the level of seriousness which the film displayed.  it specifically mentioned bad plot and crappy dialog.  both are abundantly available in either film.

It looks great, Is.  Good job!

I remember years ago when a young peterock came to these shores.  He was using a flowbee for all his stylist needs at that time.

I told him to ditch the $19.99 wonder tool and get himself to a real salon.  I also told him that only gay pornstars had mustaches like that.

He found a great beautician and the rest is history....

...but he kept the mustache.

Tuscan Milk is akin to Blood Diamonds, however.  The U.S. cannot condone the methods used by italians in acquiring the milk (repeatedly punching the cow in the forehead while demanding production?  it's inhuman), so Food Lion (The current Fort Knox of our milk reserves) will not stock it.

Very nice!  BSG looks to be a good game overall!

Picked up BSG a couple weeks ago (get it now, if you're going to order from FFG as the price is going from 39.99 to 49.99 soon).  Got two games in last friday night with the gang.  Humans lost both times.  I love the Cylon mechanic in the game but you need to be careful when you're trying to hide which side you're on.  Overall, I give it 4 out of 5 stars.  I think it needs a bit more card variety to push it over the edge to greatness.

Eel, have you tried any of the tech placement services?  I know they're mostly scams, but some of them do help you get your foot in the door.  A friend of mine has used them a few times to get placed on Exchange admin jobs.  The last one kept him around after the contract ran out as a full time employee.

So if you find a wallet that has 5.00 and a well worn picture of some adorable but obviously underfed children you'll return it  because the guy is broke, but if the wallet has 500.00 in it and one of those black american express cards, you don't because the guy obviously has no worries about money?

Not sure why the store size makes a difference.

In the case of the latter scenario, I would return it.  However, I would also return late at night and start living in the guy's crawlspace.  He's rich, for cryin' out loud.

I'll be honest:  I probably wouldn't unless it was a small store run by someone who I knew.  I would love to say I would, but I know a combination of being too damn lazy to drive back there, combined with my innate love of keeping my money would get the better of me.  Would I actively steal something?  No.  But when it falls into your lap like this, I can't fault people for succumbing to their baser desires.   icon_frown

If you are in the market for apes wearing power armor, this is the deal for you!

Sale ends 12/9.

Any of those $5 board games worth a damn? Particularly for 2 players?

Unfortunately, the ones I see listed are either games I wouldn't recommend or that I haven't played.  The only exception is Wreckage, which I've heard some good things about.

This article on 8 US regions that have tried to secede from the union made me chuckle.

My personal favorite is the Conch Republic.   icon_lol

Quote
In the early-1980s, the U.S. Border Patrol set up a checkpoint at the entrance to the Florida Keys in an effort to stop illegal drugs and immigrants. The time to check everyone's identification at the checkpoint resulted in a 20-mile traffic jam that turned tourists away, thus damaging the economy in the Keys.

After numerous legal attempts to have the checkpoint removed, on April 23, 1982, Key West mayor Dennis Wardlow declared the Florida Keys were seceding from the Union.

Moments later, now-Prime Minister Wardlow symbolically declared war on the U.S. by breaking a stale piece of Cuban bread over the head of a man dressed in a U.S. Navy uniform. One minute later, Wardlow turned to the Admiral in charge of the U.S. Naval Base at Key West and surrendered, thus ending the Conch Republic's Civil Rebellion. He then immediately asked for $1 billion in federal aid to help rebuild his war-torn nation's economy.

While officially the Republic only existed for one minute, the tongue-in-cheek spirit of the rebellion lives on. Today you can buy Conch Republic citizen and diplomatic passports (both of which have been used for international travel, though they are not intended to be official documents) and even an official flag of the republic (complete with the awesome motto, "We seceded where others failed"). The community has even minted a series of limited edition one-conch dollar coins that can be used as legal tender while in the Keys.

No doubt...that was one of the best episodes in 7 seasons I think.  I didn't expect that interview to go down that way - I never expected him to admit to everything.  It was a bit of an 'unburden yourself, Mr. Faust' kinda thing.

I was surprised as well.  Him turning on Ronnie was completely unexpected...even if it was for what he thought was a noble reason.  I just loved Olivia's line, "Do you have any idea what you've just done to me?" after about the 28th admission of a felony.   icon_lol
