well, so far not much snow.  about 2 inches.  it's supposed to snow later today, though.  I was really hoping for an excuse to stay inside, eat junk food and play video games all day.  now i have this nagging guilt that's telling me to get my taillight fixed and to head to the gym.

Man, the single player just keeps getting more and more addictive.  I realized while playing tonight what it most reminds me of, though.  Soldiers: Heroes of WWII.  I absolutely loved that game.  DoW2 has the same tactical/RTS feel to it.  But they also added in the RPG/loot aspect and it just puts it over the top for me.

Thankfully I fired my film crew a few months ago.

No snow yet, but the news reports keep talking about "shoveling out your car" in the morning.  I'm starting to think they're just crying wolf about this one.

We're supposed to get 2 to 4 inches of snow in the Chicago area tonight and tomorrow.  If recent events are any indication, this will turn into 212 to 374 inches by midnight.  In preparation for this apocalyptic event, I'm stopping at the grocery store to stock up on items that will carry me through the weekend and help me survive until Red Cross digs me out of my 2nd floor apartment on Monday afternoon.  I suspect that my week following that will be spent acclimating to the new frozen world that awaits me.

Here's my short list:

1) Hard Dough Pretzels - 1 box
2) Frozen Pizza
3) Diet 7up - 6 pack
4) 2 small boxes of Goobers
5) A blow up doll to toss out on the tundra to distract roving bands of starving wolves.  (this is my story, and I'm sticking to it)
6) A 12 pack of Becks and enough Grain Alcohol to cause temporary onset blindness for 12 hours.

Any more suggestions?
7615  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Streaming videos from your PC to the Xbox 360... on: February 20, 2009, 06:37:38 PM
check out their site for more info.

As far as I know, you can access Hulu, Netflix (although the 360 will do Netflix on its own), Youtube, CBS, etc..  As for Fox, the Playon site says that fox shows are available through Hulu, but I don't know if Playon accesses Fox.com directly.  You can poke around their forums and see, or just send them an email asking about that.
7616  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Streaming videos from your PC to the Xbox 360... on: February 20, 2009, 06:32:43 PM
Sorry Pete, I wasn't trying to be an ass, I just wasn't sure what your level of familiarity was with your home system and I didn't want to come across as an even bigger ass by assuming it was too little.

For what you want, Playon is really your only option.  You can use TVersity for streaming movies that are downloaded and stored on your PC, but for movies/shows that are viewed on your computer by accessing a web site (like Hulu or Fox.com) you'll need something like Playon.

Of course, there are always bit torrents (a form of peer to peer file sharing) but that requires some work in finding the files, downloading them, etc..   Truthfully, I think Playon is going to be your best bet.  Try the free trial and see what you think.  If you don't like it, just uninstall it.  No harm, no foul.

P.S.  using a Tom Cruise character from a movie about auto racing in an analogy???  If I could reach you right now, I'd smack the gel out of your hair.
7617  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Operation Flashpoint 2: Dragon Rising new video on: February 20, 2009, 05:22:13 PM
Operation Flashpoint was my first real experience with online gaming in an FPS with a huge map.  I still remember being amazed that I could take a helicopter and just fly around for long stretches of time, then set off to find a battle.

I also remember with great fondness sneaking through the woods in the SP portion of the game, praying that no one would see me.

OP had such great atmosphere.  I hope they recapture it with this sequel.

I'm running it on an E6600 with an 8800GT and I've got everything maxed out.  It runs smooth as silk for me.  You may not be able to go to ultra settings with that setup, but I would think that you could easily do high or medium with no issues.

So I've installed TVersity and all of a sudden my 360 can see my PC.  So now how the hell do I watch TV shows?   icon_confused

Fox won't let me download Lie to Me, Hulu isn't supported by the 360, and so how do I now watch stuff?

Pete, give Playon a try, at least for the 14 day trial.  I have trouble using it with TVersity, but I just shut one down when I want to use the other.  Playon is as close to plug and play as you're going to get.  Sure, it's 40 bucks, but that's a one time fee and it's really worth it.  The quality of the shows on Hulu when streamed to an HDTV leave a little to be desired, but it's watchable.

By the way, how is your network set up?  If you're using a router, try putting your 360 in the DMZ (check your router to see if it has the option, although most do nowadays).  That will get you past most of the port issues that cause most problems when streaming to your 360 from a PC.

I can see both sides in this instance.  I would certainly be annoyed if I'd gone through what rittchard had to endure after buying it retail.  The only words of comfort I have is that once it IS running through steam, you'll basically be set for life and never again have to worry about looking for the disk, trying to find the key, etc.  icon_smile

by the way, i did buy my copy through steam and it keeps prompting me with the code when I start the game up, telling me that I'll need to enter it somewhere.  However, after hours of game time, I've yet to see DoW2 prompt me FOR this code.   icon_confused  Any idea if i do need to enter this somewhere?  or if it has it registered using that code automatically after i bought it through steam.

I've used them for years for HDMI and other tv cables, but I didn't think to check for mp3 cables.  Thanks!  I just ordered a replacement sync cable for my taped up old one I used with my Zune for 3 bucks, as well as a wall charger for about the same price.  Those cables at best buy would've set me back about 40 or 50 bucks altogether!

My impressions after one hour of game time last night are generally favorable.  The SP portion feels more like Diablo than it does an RTS to me.  I love the customization of the characters, the leveling up via xp and the unlocks you can get from putting points into their version of stats.

Question for those who are further into the SP game than I:  I only played the intro mission in SP and part of the 1st mission on the campaign map.  It appears that they're are multiple planets that you'll have to fight across according to the menu bar at the top of the map screen.  Is this correct?

7634  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: I hate cable TV on: February 18, 2009, 05:06:31 PM
I usually call Comcast twice a year and threaten to leave for one of their competitors in Chicago.  After a few minutes of my outlining how much cheaper the other guys service is going to be, the Comcast rep usually gives me the "6 month new customer deal" on my services.  I routinely only play 20 bucks a month for my cable modem in this manner.

Recently, I dropped down a tier on my cable television, however.  It saves me about 40 bucks a month, and I lost very few HD channels.  However, for some odd reason, it drops Sci fi HD and Sci Fi SD.  Fortunately, Battlestar Galactica is thrown up on OnDemand approximately an hour after it airs, so I'm not missing anything other than those dreadful "Sci Fi Original Movie" events.

Oooh, they're using a world map for the campaign like that found in Soulstorm and Dark Crusade?  I did not know that.  I was going to pass on this one, but I loves me the campaign maps.  Ever since I first encountered that feature in Rise of Nations, I've loved it over the linear mission design.

The dumbass is in the US illegally, he abducts the president's husband, and then he has the nerve to have an American girlfriend who has his cell phone number. Not only that he uses her address to route bank funds, basically giving the feds a big stinking glowing red arrow pointing right to him. Dumb ass. On top of that he has the nerve to just walk around town after kidnapping the Presdient's husband. If the President was using her brain she would have issued a state, local and fed manhunt for the dumb ass as soon as she knew he stole the CIP device. Also, Jack has Duboku's cell phone number, can't they use that as a starting point to track his cell phone location via satellite?

On of my main problems is whenever I get in a helicopter I seem to get shot down really quickly.

I discovered that if i started zigging and zagging whenever a red blip appeared on the mini-map, I could avoid rocket fire 90 percent of the time.  Just start moving your joystick left and right rapidly while staying in a somewhat straight line and most of the missiles will overshoot or undershoot you.

I command thee...AWAKE!

I picked up Mercs 2 at Target after spotting it on the clearance shelf for 15 bucks.  I'd wanted it when it came out, but the mediocre reviews prompted me to wait.

After about a solid week of playtime, I have to say that I disagree totally with those reviews.  I had a blast with mercs 2.  I even finished the game, which is quite rare for me.  The only downside is that it was a rather short experience (probably about 16 hours total).

I didn't play through most of the racing missions since they usually just end up ticking me off, but I did take all the outposts for each faction.  I also ran every storyline and non-racing based missions I could find.  Oh, and I did pass on quite a few of the HVT and destroy missions since they always ended up screwing up my faction standings and biting me in the butt when I tried to return to the campaign missions.

It really was quite fun.  And I only ran into a couple of annoying bugs during the entire game (stuck in a tree at one point, and enemy AI that would just appear and stand there if I was too close to their spawn point).
