7321  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: GenCon 2009 on: June 30, 2009, 07:19:00 PM
I might head down for either a day or get a room outside Indianapolis and make it a weekend road trip.  Since it's only about 3 hours or so from Chicago, it's not all that much trouble.  Primarily I would go to pick up some starter sets for Arcane Legions for the gang.  We were mighty impressed with the demos at Origins and they're releasing them (supposedly) at Gencon.

Spoiler for Hiden:
Arrrgghhh!  The mission in which you have to stop the helicopters from leaving the quarantine area is friggin' annoying.  I've tried hijacking them with whipfist, shooting them down with other helicopters, and simply hurling crap at them...but I always lose one of them eventually.  Is there a trick to this mission I'm missing?   icon_confused

That you enjoyed it should be the only determining factor in your view of the film, PR_GMR.  I haven't seen it, and based on reviews I probably won't; but at the end of the day, I'm not you (god knows, I've tried, through the judicious use of lipstick, hair gel and glitter, to BE you, but I just can't pull off the voice).  So let your freak flag fly, old boy.  you liked it, so all others be damned!

Since Moffat chose the new doctor, I'm going to reserve judgment until I see him in action.  Moffat has created some of the best Who stories, plus he was behind the Jekyll mini-series, so I tend to trust him in these matters.

I played BSG about 3 times in one day at the last Octocon.  Love it.  Can't wait for the expansion.  Hopefully they'll mix it up in regards to the cards.  They get a bit stale after a few plays.

I'm staying with Zarathud from OO this year.  We have a bachelor pad at the Crowne hotel attached to the convention center.  This will be our 4th or 5th year attending the con, so we're old hands at it now.

I will not be actively seeking out CeeKay, as he has dodged previous invitations to join us over the years.  This can mean only one thing:  CeeKay is the alter ego of an online AI. Being a disembodied entity, this would severely hamper his ability to hold a fork during any dinners.

This year I'm planning on dressing as HR Puffenstuff and introducing myself as a Gorn.

Spoiler for Hiden:
I just finished the Elizabeth Green boss battle last night.  Is that one of the two you're talking about?  It was rather difficult until I realized I couldn't hit her until those three bars under her main health were depleted.  After that I just kept grabbing tanks and blasting away from a distance.  I thought it was pretty easy after I made that discovery.
7333  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Ridley Scott does Robin Hood on: June 19, 2009, 09:34:32 PM
Alien and Blade Runner I give you.  But most of the rest of those films aren't Kubrick or Gilliam level of greatness, IMHO.  When people speak of Ridley Scott, they usually do so in hushed tones of reverence.  I just don't think he merits that level of devotion based on his track record.  I guess what I'm saying is that I don't view him as an auteur anymore.
7334  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Stephen King's 'The Mist' (book & movie) on: June 19, 2009, 08:51:15 PM
This is one of those rare instances in which I actually prefer the movie (The Mist, that is) to the short story.
7335  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Ridley Scott does Robin Hood on: June 19, 2009, 08:19:05 PM
Yeah, to be honest, I guess I'm giving him slack because of Blade Runner.  However, you can't judge an entire career based on one great film if you follow it up with crap after crap.
7336  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Ridley Scott does Robin Hood on: June 19, 2009, 08:05:48 PM
I've actually been pretty disappointed in Ridley Scott for quite a few years now.  His work has just seemed so uninspired and derivative.  Body of Lies and American Gangster were just middle of the road movies that any director with at least a modicum of experience behind the camera could have done.  When I hear RIDLEY SCOTT I want something new and exciting...I want Terry Gilliam level genius, not Roland Emmerich with yet another Russel Crowe film.

I don't think it's worth it, to be honest.  They'll release them in a patch someday.  Plus, they're adding 14 new units in a huge patch this upcoming monday anyway.

Guys, I think Kratz is paraphrasing the movie...

Quote
Interviewer: "Whose this gentleman sitting behind you?"
Dale: [peeks from behind Brennan] "Hello Miss Lady!"
Interviewer: "You can't..."
Brennan: "Shu... shut your mouth."
Interviewer: "You shouldn't tell the person who is interviewing you to shut their mouth."
Brennan: "You're sounding stupid now."
Interviewer: "I'm sorry, what did you just say?"
Brennan: "You're just coming off stupid."
Interviewer: "Please leave this office."
Brennan: "Do we get any sort of souvenir?"
Interviewer: "GET OUT OF MY OFFICE!"

I'm confused as to why there are two EQ2 bundles, both of which say they have all 4 expansion packs, but the one that seems like it would have the fewer packs is more expensive.

I saw that too.  I think it's a mistake.  As far as I know, sony online releases each expansion for EQ2 with all previous expansions included..or at least they have for the last few.
7347  Non-Gaming / Steals and Deals / Re: Steam Weekend MMO sale on: June 12, 2009, 07:46:04 PM
EQ2 is EQ lite, from what I've heard.  I played EQ2 for quite some time, but never really played the first EQ.  I enjoyed it.  My only complaint was that the combat wasn't as tight as WoW or LotR.  What I mean by that is that there was always a disconnect from the actual blows.  You could fire an arrow at a distant mob, but standing on the edge of your bow's range didn't mean much since usually the mob would just warp to your spot before you got a game determined number of shots off.  In WoW and LotR, it seems that the combat is more interactive...even though I'm sure it's probably not.

other than that, there's tons of content, a huge number of different classes, multiple starting zones, and a healthy crafting system.  I'm not a big fan of the armor/weapon bonuses because it's one of those games that gives practically imperceptible bonuses for special items.

still, the amount of stuff you're getting, combined with the fact that you're getting it all for less than the cost of a month's subscription, makes it a pretty easy choice for any fan of MMO's.  Unfortunately, since I've already subscribed to EQ2 in the past, I'm not eligible for the 30 days free unless I want to lose the characters I played with when I originally subscribed.

Doomed, all kidding aside, I really suggest you talk to someone.  The tin foil over the windows thing is something a friend of mine did when he was going through the darkest part of clinical depression.  If nothing else, talk to your physician.  he/she can suggest a good mental health counselor.

Doomed, I have a few questions for you.  Please answer truthfully.

1) Have you ever purchased a van and covered the entire interior in sound proofing material and carpeting?

2) Do you have a windowless room in your house whose door you've hidden behind a bookshelf?

3) Do you ever find yourself watching Silence of the Lambs and nodding your head a lot?

If you've answered yes to any of the above questions, I would like to announce that I actually don't live in Chicago.  I live in Denmark.
