85  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Re: To renew, or not to renew....NORTON on: March 26, 2013, 05:54:43 PM
For what it's worth, I don't think I've ever seen MSE actually stop any kind of virus, trojan, or piece of malware from installing and running. Ever. A few weeks ago a family member clicked on an e-mail attachment which then proceeded to install some feux AV scam which made the computer unusable while constantly throwing up scare notices about porn viruses (the scam was they wanted you to send them your credit card info so they could send you a "key" to enable their software and remove the "virus".

Their PC had a fully up to date MSE running which proved to be utterly impotent. I had to run RKILL to find and kill the process before installing and running MalwareBytes as well as HijackThis and another program I can't remember the name of so I could track down and delete the remnants. While doing this I had the process manager open and found that "iexplorer.exe" was running, even though Internet Explorer wasn't. I killed it and a minute later it came back. So it had another trojan on it as well, apparently, that MSE wasn't aware of.

By far, the best anti-virus is common sense. But if, on the other hand, you have family members who think browser toolbars are obviously an essential part of the Internet experience (and don't we all), then you have my sympathy. I can only recommend that you also make sure you have programs like MalwareBytes and Spybot S&D installed to help catch what MSE can't.

Basically, this review's score is not based on the gameplay or graphics or sound or other accomplishments which are significant, but entirely political in nature.  My point is that this should never be the case.

Does the microtransaction implementation have an effect on the enjoyment of the game?

Then it's not "entirely political in nature" then, is it?

Thanks to that news story about the AWOL that came back seven years later with a box of grid squares, I think most people will understand that.

I'm up to Deck 5, Recreation. After I finish it up I think I may install the original and play through it again. Or maybe Deus Ex or Bioshock.
93  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: System Shock 2 is returning! on: February 14, 2013, 05:20:58 PM
Bought. I hope they get the original as well, which is surprisingly really playable with the mouselook mod.
94  Gaming / Portable Gaming & Apps / Re: iPhone/iTouch app and game thread on: February 01, 2013, 07:41:01 PM
So there's no story, no challenge, no strategy, and no skill required whatsoever. There's no goal except to place and find everything. There's little room for creativity. And it requires you to spend more time not playing than playing (unless you want to start funneling real money into it). And this is supposed to be a game.

When did this happen? Where am I?
95  Gaming / Portable Gaming & Apps / Re: iPhone/iTouch app and game thread on: February 01, 2013, 06:34:09 PM
Is there an actual game in there somewhere or is it just "build this and splice that until you've unlocked everything"?
96  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Are You Stepping Into the Next Gen? on: February 01, 2013, 05:45:08 PM
Aside from old PC games and the occasional iOS title, and emulation, I'm pretty much done. I have no desire to ever purchase a new console or upgrade my computer for gaming purposes again.

I'm playing it and it is pretty fun if you like these type of building timer games.

And apparently I do not. Though I should've known because Pocket Planes immediately bored the hell out of me as well.

I will say that I'm a few games into Dungelot and I am liking that one. I still really, really wish some of my favorite roguelikes were on here, though.

I believe Mutant Mudds is free right now, so if you don't have it, get it. It's one of the best platformers I've played on iOS.

I liked the first three Pirates movies, though there were definitely problems with the sequels (Davy Jones was, however, not one of those problems).

Or if you really want to save money, use a DE and pay $.09 a blade on Amazon like I do. It's really kind of stupid how little I spend on shaving now that I think about it. With blades and soap combined it's under $15.

A year.

I should splurge and buy fancier soap now that I think about it.
103  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Nvidia launches a game system Project Shield on: January 07, 2013, 07:13:58 PM
I personally don't care about whether or not it offers AAA games, or any new games for that matter. Android and iOS games are games that I put up with when I'm not able to sit down at a PC or console and play something substantial. I want this thing for its emulation possibilities, and I'm betting a large portion of the people that Kickstarted it feel the same way. If it can deliver on that, then I'm probably in.

I don't like DRM. Having to put a disc in doesn't bother me. But things like phone home, always online, limited activations, third party software etc bug me.

I might recommend a different hobby, then, because PC gaming is absolutely rife with DRM outside of GOG and Humble Bundle (usually).
106  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Looks like Used Games are going away next gen on: January 03, 2013, 08:41:44 PM
I only wonder whether Microsoft will pull the rug out from under Sony by allowing used games for the next XBox just so they can steal a ton of market share from the Playstation. Going into the next gen race with the only system that doesn't allow used games could be catastrophic. Not only would they be pissing off consumers, but retailers as well, who might choose to not stock the system.

And for another anecdote, I've never not shipped with USPS and I've never had a problem with them.

I would never ship something worth more than a hundred bucks or so without insurance. Signature confirmation probably would've helped you out here as well. That's definitely something to think about next time you sell something worth a lot of money.
