I found that the expansion introduced a number of performance issues. There are a couple sections in the expansion areas in particular that stutter like hell (crystalline stellae and tower of judgment come to mind). Shame they never patched it. I mean, shit, as it stands the final boss has this issue. How that gets passed quality control is beyond me. It's a widely known problem as well, so it's not like just a handful of people are affected by it.

I agree with you there. I've tried Fate and Titan Quest and while they're fun games, they don't hold a candle to Diablo 2, which has been a mainstay on my hard drive for nearly a decade now. I've completed Hell with nine characters (hammerdin x2, concentrator, berserker, meteorb, frozenwall, bowazon, poisonancer, and summonancer) and I have several others that are in Hell (javazon, lightning sorc, whirlwind barb, werebear, and kicktrapper), as well. And of course there were the many others that either failed or I grew tired of playing.

Besides TFC I doubt I've sunken more time into any game more than Diablo 2. That said, my interest in D3 plummeted when I heard they were omitting LAN support. That, along with all the garbage I hear about the "New" puts it well into the wait-and-see category. Then again, because of all the new-fangled DRM schemes, every game is wait-and-see now. Such a sad state of affairs.

Speaking of which, one of the reasons I love Diablo 2 so much is the nostalgia. It was released in the best era in gaming in my opinion, and while I've been gaming since the late 80s, it was the late 90s (Half-Life specifically) that really grabbed hold of me. Just hearing the first few notes of the rogue camp theme really brings me back. As long as I play games, I don't think it will leave my hard drive.
324  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Diablo 2 - 2010 on: May 23, 2010, 09:19:37 PM
Yeah but the gameplay itself has remained exactly the same from what I can remember. There have been plenty of changes to skills like I said. And yes, they occasionally implement a new encounter like the one mentioned above. It's a shame they only allow you to play them on though (unless you mod the game). I personally don't care at all about online play, but I've had a lot of fun with D2 on SP and LAN.
325  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Diablo 2 - 2010 on: May 23, 2010, 03:49:03 AM
There's a mod called D2MultiRes that adds support for higher resolutions. Just don't use it on or you could be banned.

Not sure what you mean KC but I don't recall any patch changing Diablo 2's gameplay in any significant way. The biggest change I can think of is that the most recent patch (1.13) allows you to respec your character by finishing the Den of Evil quest in the first town. Usually the patches just alter the balance of the skills, drop rates, etc...

Eventually your athleticism will increase (it increases as you run), which increases your run speed. You may even find some boots that increase your speed further. Try playing as a Bosmer, Dunmer, or especially a male Argonian. Those start off with the fastest run speeds out of the gate. If you choose to be born under the sign of The Steed you can then fortify your speed an additional 25 points once per day.

And of course make sure you're actually running and not walking.

But yes, Morrowind starts off very slowly. Most RPGs do, but Morrowind might be the worst I've ever played in that regard. Even if you specialize in combat skills you can still expect to get your ass kicked by worms and rats in the beginning. I did enjoy it a lot, however (though I never played the expansions). I took over the dead guy's house in Balmora and filled it up with basically every good item in the game.

Like other Bethesda RPGs though you kind of have to police yourself if you want to have the best experience. It's very easy to cheese the game, and you can of course do anything and everything you want regardless of the character choices you make.

330  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Woohoo! I finally bought Tie Fighter Collector's Edition on: April 28, 2010, 12:06:34 PM
There were actually two bundles. One was called the "X-Wing Collector Series" and it had the updated versions (they were ported to the XvT engine) of X-Wing, TIE Fighter, and basically a demo of X-Wing vs TIE Fighter. That one should be relatively affordable.

The other one is called "X-Wing Trilogy" and it includes X-Wing, TIE Fighter, their expansions, and X-Wing Alliance. That one is much more rare and will probably cost you $100 or more on eBay (when a copy actually shows up there).

I wants it, precious!
331  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Why did it take so long to come up with logical mouse/keyboard controls? on: April 20, 2010, 04:34:38 PM
I generally use Alt for games that have sprint (Stalker and COD 4 come to mind), which usually works fine since Jump almost always doubles as Stance Up anyway.
332  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Why did it take so long to come up with logical mouse/keyboard controls? on: April 20, 2010, 03:58:09 PM
Most people still haven't realized that the shift key should be used for crouch. Not the control key which has been the default in virtually every game I can remember playing for reasons unknown to me.

That is, unless you like bending your pinky finger at an awkward angle instead of having it rest naturally on the key...

W - Forward
A - Strafe Left
S - Backward
D - Strafe Right
Shift - Crouch
Space - Jump
Q + E - Lean Left/Right (if available--E for Use if not)
Mouse 1 - Primary Fire
Mouse 2 - Secondary Fire / Iron Sights
Mouse 3 - Use
R - Reload Weapon
Ctrl + Alt - Stance Down / Up
F5 + F8 - Quicksave + Quickload

Obviously there are minor changes for certain games (and if you have a special mouse with more buttons), but that's the base configuration. Everything else is wrong.

There are a few super-talented fighter, boxing and MMA that can go up..back down..up again in wieght classes and still maintain the highest degree of ability, strength and determination...

Anderson is very special in this regard. Not only is he exceptionally talented, but he has an amazingly versatile body type. He's the only person in the history of the sport that I know of that can legitimately compete in four weight classes. He's fought at 170, 185, and 205, and he walks around at 220 typically now so he wouldn't have a problem even moving up to heavyweight if he wanted. There's no doubt in my mind that he could win the title at three of those, and I think he could beat a fair number of the heavyweights out there as well.

BJ has similarly fought at a wide range of weights but he loses a lot of his speed and stamina when he gets above 170. Anderson is just a lightning bolt wherever he goes.

The Year of The Injuries claims another as Thiago Alves is forced to pull out of the card due to "irregularities with his CT scan results"...

Ben Saunders is in to fight Fitch.
336  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: UFC 111 on: March 24, 2010, 12:32:46 AM
I need to see more from Carwin before I jump on his bandwagon. He's basically only fought one good fighter in Gonzaga and from what I remember he got pushed around for much of the fight before landing the KO shot. I think Mir will probably sub him, but I'd love to be proven wrong.

Also, his nickname should be Shane "The Train" Carwin.

GSP should dispatch of Hardy fairly easily, and I expect Hardy to be swinging for the fences once things stop going his way (which will probably be immediately). GSP really needs to move up soon because there really isn't anybody left at WW to challenge him (he better not get knocked out now).

Jon Fitch vs Thiago Alves should be a great fight. Two of the biggest and most talented welterweights in the world. Fitch won when they fought back in 2006, but they've both greatly improved since then, so who knows what will happen? Thiago has been a monster lately though, so Fitch is in for a long night.

off topic, but did you encounter a bug in the PC version that prevented you from going past the 3rd or 4th level? it was something like a missing platform in one of the sewers. HOW ANNOYING THAT WAS

I was 4-7 years old at the time and I could never even get beyond Rocksteady (the encounter right at the end of the first level and before the dam). Hey what can I say, I sucked at games back then.

Of course, it ran pretty poorly (I used an 80/88 with CGA graphics at the time), and it really isn't an easy game to begin with. Fond memories, though...

I think.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles also had the burgundy code book with black font. It contained hundreds of four digit codes set up in a grid and you needed to look them up to launch the game.

And yes, like an idiot, I too got rid of it. I'm also not having much luck tracking down a picture of it. Sorry...

As far as which one to play, you install both and just use the Immortal Throne link to start up.  That gives you the enhanced experience through the original chapters and then leads seamlessly to the very large final chapter.

D'oh! I just got the gold edition and played all the way through the first two acts, and a couple quests in Asia using the regular Titan Quest shortcut...

Still, I've been having a lot of fun with this. My Warfare/Defense build is working out well so far. And yeah, money is certainly never an issue. Even at the beginning I was bringing in far more than I was spending (which was only on potions), and now I have over 3 million. I guess I can stop lugging yellow items back to town any time now.

The game looks really nice. Beautiful effects and texture work. It also runs very well, and the load times are virtually nonexistent, even when teleporting through the various acts. And looking in the task manager I see that it's only using up...200 megs of memory? Madness!

Oh well. Back to the grind! *click*

That would be the equivalent of losing a CD-Key with the standard DRM of the last 20 years. This new DRM would be like having to ask the key smith for permission every time you wanted to enter your home. And then having him stay in the guest room while you're there.

And no, that wouldn't be worth it either.

So go ahead and purchase a copy of SH5 for me, too. In fact, you can do the same with every Ubisoft game they release henceforth, because they've lost me as a customer.

Some games are more suited for the intimacy of the PC, and others are best played from the couch in front of a larger TV screen. We ultimately realised that the most compelling way to experience "Alan Wake" was on the Xbox 360 platform, so we focused on making it an Xbox 360 exclusive. Both Microsoft and Remedy have long histories in PC game development. This decision was about matching this specific game to the right platform.

That's the biggest load of bullshit I've ever read. Oh well. Thank you for saving me the displeasure of playing your game, I guess.

Awesome game, though. I plan on playing it at least a couple more times (one with a rogue/thief/assassin build and one as a mage). Saving certain quest lines for certain characters makes replays a bit more enjoyable, I think.

A bad LCD power inverter is the more likely problem, I think. It's a little PCB that looks something like this:

He can replace it himself if he's the handy type. You just need to pull apart the screen casing; the inverter will likely be near the bottom or side of the screen. There are numerous tutorials online.

As far as testing is concerned...I'm not sure. I have 3 dead desktop LCDs and 1 dead laptop LCD (this can't be normal) and they all suffer from the same problem. I know it's the inverter because when I first turn on the monitors the backlights light up just fine, and then turn off a few seconds later.
