Super 8 came available on streaming this weekend. It was a little bit better than I expected. Enjoyable.
2  Non-Gaming / Steals and Deals / Re: Steam Deals Thread: SUMMER SALE! - 30% Trade Bonus at GameStop for Steam Funds on: July 19, 2012, 06:58:29 PM
Hmmm... debating between Fallout 3: GOTY + Fallout: NV or Alan Wake + L.A. Noire

My PC laptop is a quad-core 1.6GHz with 8GB ram running Win 7, but the video card worries me on some of these games. It is a GeForce GT 320M. Anyone know if any/all these games will be ok, or not work?

As someone who used to be quite good at foosball (and owns an very nice table) I have to say this looks really good. Unfortunately, I own neither a Vita or PS3 frown

So I have never made a purchase during a Summer Sale before, but I do remember talk about when is a good time to jump. So if I were interested in getting the Bethesda Collection (http://store.steampowered.com/sub/15263/) should I just do it now, or should I wait for some magical time in the near future where it will be even cheaper?

I would be interested even if it does RROD.

I just finished watching all 7 seasons of the Peep Show (a British comedy) and thought it was great.  Of course, 7 of their seasons are like 2 of ours, so that went by relatively quickly.  A bit more wry, dry humor than the broad comedy of Black Books, I'd say, and I quite enjoyed it.

I finished Peep Show a couple weeks ago, then watched That Mitchell and Webb Look and while it had its moments overall wasn't nearly as funny as Peep Show. Now I need to find some more British comedy.

Holy crap...that's an $8 million gross in the first 24 hours.  That's freaking crazy.  And unlike the big triple A titles, he doesn't have a huge budget or large operating expenses.

I haven't been following Minecraft much lately, but I would guess that they worked with another company to create the 360 port. Depending on the agreement, this could have cost quite a chunk of cash.

I submitted my level Kinetic Energy. I rated it Hard, though I didn't think it was -that- hard. After 139 downloads, there are only 3 times on the board, one of which is mine, so maybe it is.

The editor is fantastic once you get the hang of it.

Anyway, give my level a try. Although I can't change it (once submitted, no changes), I'd still take feedback to heart for my next effort.

I tried to find your track by doing a search with your user name but it didn't find anything. Is there a way to do a text search for a track name?

Got to play around for 30-45 minutes this morning. My initial reaction was actually not overly positive. The first bike felt off to me. But after getting to the third bike it is feeling better and I think by the time I get to the hard and extreme tracks I will be back at home with it.

I do have three specific issues with it:

1. The rider can hit the ground a lot more that in HD. You can lay on the ground upside down and it won't crash until you try to lean forward or back.
2. While the levels are cool, I feel like there is just too much going on. I liked the warehouse in HD because it allowed you to focus on the track and not on the multitude of crap going on in the background. I think a lot of the user created tracks will not have this issue.
3. The music during play is just annoying. Glad I could turn the volume done to 0.

Well let me jump on this wagon and take a ride. I purchased an acoustic at the beginning of the year with the intentions of learning to play. Haven't been able to sit down with it much yet though. So I too am looking for any pointers on the best ways to get started and best sites/apps to look into.

Quote from: zinckiwi on February 15, 2012, 05:58:09 PM

I use Macs at work at Windows at home, which is round the other way from most, and would have a hard time giving up one or the other. I do django/python work on my Mac; Lightroom and games on my PC. Photoshop on the Mac because that's where the license is. Coding on the PC because Microsoft hasn't seen fit to release a Visual Studio for OS X. Etcetera.

I don't think the "Macs are more expensive" line holds water anymore, and hasn't for years. Yes, you can buy a Windows laptop for $600. Just because Apple doesn't have an offering at that price point doesn't mean that (pound-for-pound) they're more expensive. When you factor in the software suite that Macs come with, the build quality and specs, the after-market service and the vasty superior resale value, I'm pretty sure the TCO is comparable.

I too use Mac at work and PC at home.

I have tried Mac off and on over the years, and I do think OSX (without Lion) is just fine. But being a very long time Windows user I don't see much if anything that "beats" Windows. So IMO on the software side I would consider it a wash (although for myself I find doing things in Win quick and easy, but I chalk that up to familiarity).

On the hardware side, I will say that MBPs are light. My 17" HP is way too heavy and I hate traveling with it. The 15" MBP on the other hand is super light (although the SSD is probably a big part of the lightness).

So I would have to say if you don't want to spend the money for a Mac, don't. You really won't be missing out on much.

Picked up a new xbox and it came with a Halo Reach download code. I haven't purchased many xbox games in quite a while so I am open to ideas for a trade.

Ok, a short list of games I would be interested in (open to other ideas too):

Mirror's Edge
Dead Rising 2
Skate 3

I just installed Steam to a non-normal directory on a separate HDD, where all of my games are.  Problem solved.

Can you explain this a little further for us stoopid people...... Tongue
I have a new 1T external hd I'm ready to hookup.

So I just install Steam on it and my games will be accessible from the new hd or do I have to redownload and reinstall all of the games onto it?

And...what is a non-normal directory?

How does your external drive connect? Chances are the transfer speed is much too low to be running games from it.

I just finished watching all of the Breaking Bad seasons on there (1-3). Now I sadly don't know what to watch next. Started watching 30 Rock, but am not feeling it so far. I watched season 1 of the Walking Dead and liked that. Any recommendations for something more along the lines of Breaking Bad and Walking Dead? Movie or TV doesn't matter.

Let's hope they actually put story in the games themselves. Since it's not Bungie doing it, I have good hopes for this.

Books and other media should fill in gaps, not as a crutch for the game's story itself.

I hope for just the opposite. I like the minimal story in the game, with books and other media providing a full story line along side the game. Only because I don't care for much story in my games.

Huh? I played on the 360 for months on end and thought it had very few problems.

The one thing that I worry is that they will remove the split-screen play, that would seriously piss me off as my wife and I played through the game about 2.5 times.

I have been playing this over the last week and while I am enjoying it, I feel that I am getting to a point where it is loosing it's fun. I have mined down to 'Hell' where I quickly die, I found some corruption but don't know if I can/should do anything with it. I found the old man and fought the boss at night, but just quickly died. Found a sky... land/island/whatever you call it, but the damn Harpys kill me pretty quickly. So I guess I need to upgrade my equipment at this point. I have a gold broadsword and I think some iron protective gear. Do I really just need to spend all my time mining for more gold to upgrade everything before I can move on?

How so? I play my console games on my console and big screen TV. Why would I want to play them on my computer? The only way I could see it is if I could play them on my laptop, but I really don't think most laptops have the horsepower to do that.
38  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Ok. I need help. How do I make friends? on: July 11, 2011, 06:13:34 PM
A lot of friends can come from the workplace, but in my experience this doesn't last too long. My wife and I don't really have many friends now days (2 kids makes it quite hard for a while), but our closest friends are some we met playing softball. None of us play anymore, but truly feel they are great friends.

Also wanted to say that this AZ heat must do something to people as this place seems to be filled with completely unfriendly people, at least when it comes to strangers.

i'm not sure why some people here are downplaying Java and instead recommending C#?

Thats probably me - I have for some reason steered a lot towards Visual studio stuff and away from things like Java and Python.

There's no real reason, other than I have some basic familiarity with Visual studio since I used to use Delphi back in the day. Also, as I mentioned before, I found the easy of which you make UI's very nice

I do because for learning there is little better than dragging a button onto a form, double-clicking it, typing code and running it to see it work.

Of course that may not be for everyone, and certainly isn't how you would build a full application, but it is all about quick gratification to get started with.
