401  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Strange problem... PSU, video card (6600 gt), or heat? on: January 09, 2005, 10:31:48 PM
The relevent info first:

DFI Lanparty 250 gb nf3 MB
AMD 64 2.8 GHZ
512 megs 3200  ram (corsiar XMS)
MSI 6600  gt AGP
DVD drive, 3 HDD, AMD retail CPU fan/HS, 2x 80mm case fans
Antec 350 Smartblue PSU

All settings normal, no overclocking or funny stuff.

The system works fine, for the most part, but I'm getting a weird lockup. So far, it's happened in Half Life 2, and the Tribes vengeance demo. My monitor will loose the video signal, no input, KB lockup, machine is kaput. Manually power down the system, and upon starting back up, the machine won't post or boot. No boot beep code. I'll have to manually unseat the video card, boot the machine with no card (getting the bios beep code), power down, THEN reinsert the card and the system will post and boot as normal.

The problems only started last week, with the installation of the 6600 gt. Am I pushing the PSU too hard? Anyone else had a similar problem, or running a similar system and want to share what PSU you're using?

I really doubt this is a heat issue. The same rig worked fine with my old card (nvidia Ti 4400, which is basically a 4x agp 4600) and I'm really curious if the new card is just drawing too much voltage. The card seems to display fine, when it's working..... I'm figuring, either I have a flakey card (hopefully not) or an inadequate PSU. I'm kinda prefer the later, as it's easier to fix, but.....

As a side note, the situation really sucks, as the new card has mucho grande performance in both Dawn of War and Homeworld 2. Dawn of War looks like a totally different game; it's that much improved. Sucks that I can't play any of them without worrying if I'm killing the system.
402  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Retail CPU question on: January 04, 2005, 02:56:47 PM
I just recently got a retail AMD 64. AMD calls it a 'CPU in a box' (or something such), and it's pretty much everything, including grease, which was pre-applied to the heatsink.

So, no grease necessary with the AMD 64 retail. I have no idea about intel.
403  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Why ConsoleGold is bad for my marriage... on: January 03, 2005, 11:42:56 PM
Coop;

Ninja Gaiden. It's a disservice to own the 'box and not give Gaiden some playing time. I made the mistake of not playing NG for about six months or so because of the buzz about the difficulty. Although it's hard, the fun level is very high as well.
404  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Is my PSU going to cut it? on: December 07, 2004, 03:57:13 PM
I have a little upgrade (current machine is going to our church), and I'm wondering if I need a new PSU as well. I'm currently running an Antec Smartblue 350/Asus a7n8x dlx/amd xp 2100+/nvidia ti4400. Newegg should be shipping me a DFI LANPARTY UT nF3 250Gb, along with a amd 64 2800+ to sit on top of it. I plan to continue using my ti4400 for the time being; can my current PSU drive this? If things are close, I could drop down to a couple hard drives in the case, alone with a dvd drive.

If it will work now, how about later, if I want to upgrade to a nvidia 6600 gt or so? (I'm aware that the current card will be the -major- weak link in the system).

I figured that someone else here might have some useful first hand experience on how far you can stretch your power supply.
405  Non-Gaming / Steals and Deals / Xbox Kingdom Under Fire: Crusaders $12.48 Sears B&M on: December 03, 2004, 12:13:10 AM
The new KUF(xbox) is $12.48 at B&M Sears. I can verify this (picked up a copy at the local Sears) but availability/etc vary, so YMMV. Looks to be they are trying to elimate their stock of this and have price dropped and now clearanced it. BTW, if you swing by the local Sears and it's priced at 24.99 or something, have them price check it, it appears that the clearance price is not posted on the rack.

The price was the same online, but Sears appears to have sold through their online stock. Might be worth checking back on periodically if your Sears doesn't have KUF or is sold out. Or, of course, you don't live near a Sears.

407  Non-Gaming / Trading Forum / [closed] Wanted : Gamecube HD component cable. on: November 30, 2004, 07:20:55 PM
Getting a component cable at the Nintendo store is another option, if you want to go new and no ebay or Liksang. $30 is a bit much, but it's first party, and I can verify that it works fine. Plus, hey, it's Nintendo. smile

Whats sad is the cube has pretty good HDTV support, but you really have to jump through hoops to get the hardware to take advantage of it.
408  Non-Gaming / Steals and Deals / EB PC preowned<$14.99 now 70% off (Sale Over??) on: November 30, 2004, 06:14:57 PM
I can confirm that the sale is dead in the Greenville, SC area. Not sure if its dead in all markets, but I think it likely is.

Let's hope that they bring it back before the end of the Christmas season. smile

I'll add up Unreal Tournement 2003, which should put me at +2 Karma

How is Noctropolis? The idea sounds interesting, but how is the game itself?

414  Non-Gaming / Steals and Deals / Front Mission 4(ps2) $15 BestBuy on: November 01, 2004, 02:56:28 AM
Front Mission 4 (and I know you all know, but it's ps2 only) has dropped to 15 bucks at BB online and B&M. If you were waiting for it to drop, well, it has.

IMO, definately worth $15.

Nods to bytesizedeals for the deal.
415  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Ace Combat 5 - Any new info or Previews/Hands On? on: October 21, 2004, 01:41:53 PM
Game launch (depending on who you ask) is sometime early next week, but there hasn't been much info or talk about this. Now, I know it's not another Halo2 or GTA or all, but I would expect some more warmth for this that what I'm seeing.

I'm looking forward to AC5. Preordered, fully paid; all I have to do is go by GameRush when they release it. But all the quiet surrounding it has me kinda spooked.

Anyone on the industry side had some first had experience with this that they can share?
416  Non-Gaming / Steals and Deals / Rise of Nations and RON: Thrones and Patriots $10 each at BB on: October 20, 2004, 12:02:55 AM
Pretty much as the title says.

Rise of Nations, and RON: Thrones and Patriots exp are 10 bucks each at Best Buy, either online or B&M. Listed price in the store might not be updated yet, but in my local store (at least) it did ring up at $10.

I figure, 20 bucks for one of the best recent RTS titles and it's expansion isn't too bad.

Thanks to the forums at bytesizedeals.com  for the info.

418  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Operation Flashpoint... on: October 19, 2004, 12:45:29 AM
Ok. I'm about to get around to -finally- installing this game on my machine.

However, on Gone Gold, before it dropped, there was a thread with some really awesome pics from a mod/update for OpFlash. I thought I had saved the text of the message, to go back and link to later. Now, however, I can't find it. And I can't go do a search for it on the GGold forums. frown

Anyone here know of a mod/update for OpFlash that might be what I'm looking for, or any GGolders (CGolders now) remember the topic in question and can forward me on to the correct locations?
419  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Xbox Collection Recommendations on: October 12, 2004, 02:08:15 PM
Metal Arms is a great experience, and one to be on the lookout for. If you can luck up, Best Buy had it for 5 bucks once, but it seems to hover around the $20 mark at EB/GS. Maybe some of the other usual suspects have it cheaper. But it's worth that $20, IMO.

POP: Sands of Time is a great experience while it lasts. Fun game. -Tons- of amazing production values. Another game with slick production; if you're a Bond fan, Everything or Nothing seems to be at the twenty buck mark, and it's a good game.

If you have a GameRush store (Blockbuster variant) they have a 'buy 2, cheaper one half off' preowned deal. You can rack up, but it depends what titles they have available. If you're in the area and have a shopping list in mind, it's worth checking out.

If you like driving games -at all-, when you have the cash go grab Burnout 3. Great game. Same for Ninja Gaiden, except for action. Both are must have's, I'd say.

I'll have to look at my collection tonight and see if anything else (found on the cheap) jumps out at me.
420  Non-Gaming / Trading Forum / [Discussion only] So, are we going to do a PIFF thread? on: October 12, 2004, 01:37:29 PM
Well, -I- can't find GG as of this morning, and made the migration here. Nice to see all the GG PIFF peeps here!

Now I just need to find what I still have to put up for PIFF....

And yes, it's me. Who else would register this name?
421  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Any GG forum regulars that have not yet been spotted here? on: October 12, 2004, 01:31:48 PM
No one noticed I wasn't here yet.  frown

Oh, well, I'm here now. Do we have a new PIFF thread yet? smile
