Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Retail CPU question
|
on: January 04, 2005, 02:56:47 PM
|
|
I just recently got a retail AMD 64. AMD calls it a 'CPU in a box' (or something such), and it's pretty much everything, including grease, which was pre-applied to the heatsink.
So, no grease necessary with the AMD 64 retail. I have no idea about intel.

Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Why ConsoleGold is bad for my marriage...

Coop;
Ninja Gaiden. It's a disservice to own the 'box and not give Gaiden some playing time. I made the mistake of not playing NG for about six months or so because of the buzz about the difficulty. Although it's hard, the fun level is very high as well.

Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Is my PSU going to cut it?
|

I have a little upgrade (current machine is going to our church), and I'm wondering if I need a new PSU as well. I'm currently running an Antec Smartblue 350/Asus a7n8x dlx/amd xp 2100+/nvidia ti4400. Newegg should be shipping me a DFI LANPARTY UT nF3 250Gb, along with a amd 64 2800+ to sit on top of it. I plan to continue using my ti4400 for the time being; can my current PSU drive this? If things are close, I could drop down to a couple hard drives in the case, alone with a dvd drive.
If it will work now, how about later, if I want to upgrade to a nvidia 6600 gt or so? (I'm aware that the current card will be the -major- weak link in the system).
I figured that someone else here might have some useful first hand experience on how far you can stretch your power supply.

Non-Gaming / Steals and Deals / Xbox Kingdom Under Fire: Crusaders $12.48 Sears B&M
|
on: December 03, 2004, 12:13:10 AM
|

The new KUF(xbox) is $12.48 at B&M Sears. I can verify this (picked up a copy at the local Sears) but availability/etc vary, so YMMV. Looks to be they are trying to elimate their stock of this and have price dropped and now clearanced it. BTW, if you swing by the local Sears and it's priced at 24.99 or something, have them price check it, it appears that the clearance price is not posted on the rack.
The price was the same online, but Sears appears to have sold through their online stock. Might be worth checking back on periodically if your Sears doesn't have KUF or is sold out. Or, of course, you don't live near a Sears.

Non-Gaming / Steals and Deals / Front Mission 4(ps2) $15 BestBuy

Front Mission 4 (and I know you all know, but it's ps2 only) has dropped to 15 bucks at BB online and B&M. If you were waiting for it to drop, well, it has.
IMO, definately worth $15.
Nods to bytesizedeals for the deal.

Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Ace Combat 5 - Any new info or Previews/Hands On?

Game launch (depending on who you ask) is sometime early next week, but there hasn't been much info or talk about this. Now, I know it's not another Halo2 or GTA or all, but I would expect some more warmth for this that what I'm seeing.
I'm looking forward to AC5. Preordered, fully paid; all I have to do is go by GameRush when they release it. But all the quiet surrounding it has me kinda spooked.
Anyone on the industry side had some first had experience with this that they can share?

Non-Gaming / Steals and Deals / Rise of Nations and RON: Thrones and Patriots $10 each at BB
|

Pretty much as the title says.
Rise of Nations, and RON: Thrones and Patriots exp are 10 bucks each at Best Buy, either online or B&M. Listed price in the store might not be updated yet, but in my local store (at least) it did ring up at $10.
I figure, 20 bucks for one of the best recent RTS titles and it's expansion isn't too bad.
Thanks to the forums at bytesizedeals.com for the info.

Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Operation Flashpoint...
|
on: October 19, 2004, 12:45:29 AM

Ok. I'm about to get around to -finally- installing this game on my machine. However, on Gone Gold, before it dropped, there was a thread with some really awesome pics from a mod/update for OpFlash. I thought I had saved the text of the message, to go back and link to later. Now, however, I can't find it. And I can't go do a search for it on the GGold forums. Anyone here know of a mod/update for OpFlash that might be what I'm looking for, or any GGolders (CGolders now) remember the topic in question and can forward me on to the correct locations?

Metal Arms is a great experience, and one to be on the lookout for. If you can luck up, Best Buy had it for 5 bucks once, but it seems to hover around the $20 mark at EB/GS. Maybe some of the other usual suspects have it cheaper. But it's worth that $20, IMO.
POP: Sands of Time is a great experience while it lasts. Fun game. -Tons- of amazing production values. Another game with slick production; if you're a Bond fan, Everything or Nothing seems to be at the twenty buck mark, and it's a good game.
If you have a GameRush store (Blockbuster variant) they have a 'buy 2, cheaper one half off' preowned deal. You can rack up, but it depends what titles they have available. If you're in the area and have a shopping list in mind, it's worth checking out.
If you like driving games -at all-, when you have the cash go grab Burnout 3. Great game. Same for Ninja Gaiden, except for action. Both are must have's, I'd say.
I'll have to look at my collection tonight and see if anything else (found on the cheap) jumps out at me.
