Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Biggest surprise hit/disapointment of the year 2011

Really more PC specific, but my biggest disappointment was Sword of the Stars 2. I'm a huge fan of SOTS1, but the release of 2 was nothing more than a glorified alpha. It's been roughly a month, and the game is only now approaching something that should be released.... but it's still got a LOT to go.
Surprise hit? Bastion. Dark Souls is also pretty darn good, but I haven't gotten to the 'hook' bit with Dark Souls like I did with Demon Souls yet. Plus, DS pretty much delivers what I would expect, so not so much a surprise...

To confirm, yes, this is not the state software should be in if you're charging for it. It's a beta, pure and simple. A lot of stuff is obviously not linked in, a lot of stuff is absent. Manual is a joke.
At this point I really feel screwed. I wanted to support Kerberos, so I went ahead and got the game. At this point, though, I'm out 40 bucks for a beta that might never be finished. Maybe they have been having some money/employee issues, but at this point, honestly, that just makes me feel more screwed. You've used the goodwill of your fans to make your payday.
The game shows potential, but at this point that's all I can say about it. Until they resolve this mess, no one else should purchase it. And unfortunately for Kerberos and Paradox, they have to weather the shitstorm this release is going to do to both their reputations.

Confirmed, however as yet no "official" response on the game forums (that I saw, anyway). The steam build is an old beta version. Not sure on the GG version, but since I purchased it on Steam... bleh. Kinda sucks. I was hoping to give it a go. The little bit that works is pretty cool, and promising for the full version, but my steam copy keeps crashing.
Hopefully it will be resolved soon.

What about something for those of us who actually got ALL of the shards?
you get a kick in the balls. as soon as you fire up the game and it detects that you did that a remote signal is sent out, summoning the Sony Ball Kicking Ninja Strike Squad to your home. they're an elite team of ninjas, you'll never see them coming until you are rolling on the ground in pain. Nah, a signal is sent out, but then Sony just gives your credit card information to hackers and you have to fight identity fraud.

Ok. If you don't have this, buy it now. Only reason I can think of to hold off would be if you wanted to tie this to your Steam account (and no doubt, with all the Steam sales sometime in the next year, it will be on sale on Steam for five bucks or under).... but seriously, if you haven't played this, buy it now. It's one of the best games I've played on any platform.

After spending some more time with it I'd have to agree with the above... although there is some of that loot collection here like D2/Torchlight the real appeal of the game is setting up the heroes. Something to note, not only do you have the flexibility with the individual heroes, but the real game is setting up a team of 3 out of the 25 heroes and their variations and the combo's between the 3 and the other members of the team (if you're playing online). Looking for that synergy and finding cross team or in-team combinations that are effective is cool.

I played the beta demo on the last day and was impressed enough with it to order it. More updates when the download finishes.
(Side note: for Steam preorders, is there a way to get steam to autodownload as soon as an item releases?)
Diablo 2 lite is about right, from my run with it. Kinda scratches the same itch as Torchlight. Will this replace D3? Heck no, but with the right support, it could fill that niche well until Blizzard finishes D3.... whenever that might be...

Nope. Even though it actually asked me which version of Windows 7 I have and I answered "Home Premium", it still let me go through the download and install process before telling me I don't qualify. Microsoft are arseholes.
I guess I'll try VMware or something.
Ran into this on my mom's laptop. Even though you cannot do XP mode, you should be able to create a new VM and load XP on it manually.

Nearly made the jump on a Squeezebox Boom today, but missed the deal from Logitech. However, in looking at the specs on the hardware, it appears it wouldn't have been a drop in fit for our setup (Twonkymedia Server backend). Anyone have Twonky and a UPnP player/receiver they like?
Edit: Or DLNA. Basically, if it's a player and it works with Twonky, it would be a fit.

The Witcher super mega ultra deluxe edition for $5.
I never played this, but I hear I should. I'll take it! Holy crap I missed that. I still haven't played it either - IN! For anyone that doesn't already own The Witcher, do yourself a favor and BUY THIS NOW. Seriously, it's one of the best gaming investments you will ever make for 5 bucks.

finally got around to giving this a shot last night. Not bad, but I'm not sure how long I'll end up playing. I've never played any of the Sly games, and I think I see why: one hit on anything damaging and you're dead. I can almost guarantee there will be a point before even the first game is over the frustration level goes above what I care to subject myself to.
still, amazing visuals. Well done Sucker Punch!
The 'one hit' aspect of Sly is only in the first game. The rest of the series is a little more like Jak and Daxter in that regard than Sly 1.

You pretty much get 3 points for just having an account. Having a few minipets will get you 1-2 points (depends on rarity). Level a ranger pet up to 20 = another point. Rare pet (black moa, etc), one more. Have MOX? Another. I haven't done much for titles, etc and I've got 9 points. When I used the calculator, If I work at a few titles, hero and character armor and weapons, I could get it up to 30. (30 is the max needed for bonus items and not just titles). Not sure if it's really worth all the effort or if all that gear will be replaced very shortly.
Anyone see any videos where gear/weapon equipment management is shown?

Ok.... watching this and reading some of the dev diaries, this just went from 'Ok, I know I'm going to buy this eventually' to 'Holy cow, when does this come out so I can play this -now-'.
Any preorder bonuses been announced?
