1001  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / EA unveils a bit of Madden 2006/NCAA 2006 on: April 15, 2005, 01:23:24 PM
I guess it's because I hadn't played the previous 2 years of NCAA, but I really liked it. I only have a Gamecube so my football options are limited and it fit the bill. Say hello to your 3-time NCAA Champion Wisconsin Badgers biggrin.

Jeez, why? I had a great time with that game.

Not true.  Its called "Peacedogging" for a reason.

There is a cadre of people there who will never get banned, no matter what they do or say, and that group enjoys exploiting the fact.  It's the entire reason OO exists, IMHO.
Yeah, that's pretty much the best description of GG/OO I've ever read.

He also said in the presence of others, "I don't know what she wanted.  How in the world should I know what she would have wanted done?"  It wasn't until 7 years after the accident that he "miraculously remembered" that she would want to die.

There are sworn affidavants that have nurses have signed saying Michael Shaivo would come to the doctors and say, "Why hasn't she died yet?  When is that bitch going to die?"  He also talked about the money he would get from the life insurance policy.

I also wouldn't consider having two kids and a common-law wife standing by her side.

Under normal situations, I would go with the husband's wishes.  However, there are a lot of things that truly make me question his intentions, and a lot of it obviously hasn't been reported.

Well, I've played between 40-50 games of MVP and I haven't experienced one crash yet and I haven't seen any reports on the board of there being problems. So I think it's safe to say that it was either a one-off crash or a very, very rare one.

Oh yeah, the commentary is really bad. If I hear 'That was a purpose pitch...' one more time, I'll...I'll just try to ignore it.

Having a blast with the game, though. Playing pro after a fantasy draft and my Padres are 3-3 right now. I find the most difficult thing is getting a feel for whether a pitch is going to be in the strike zone or not...to me, so far, it seems like release point is unrelated to where the ball crosses the plate, even taking pitch type into account. Sometimes the same pitcher will throw a curve that drops 12-6 for a ball and then later will drop it right in the middle from the same release. Not a complaint; just trying to figure it out.

I'm also finding pitching too easy. Even when my #5 starter is down to 25% stamina late in the game, he's still nailing the corners.

Lockdown, I'd love your sliders. Also, could you describe the difference between pro and all-star? I'm 3-3 in pro with the losses due to my lack of hitting and not due to any lack of pitching on my part. I wonder how all-star would change my games and playing style. Would I get jacked 10-0 repeatedly due to CPU 'cheating' by just nailing every pitch?

If you use either Pared's or Jistic's sliders (they're on OS)  then that disparity kind of evens out.

In other words, instead of just sucking at hitting...you'll suck at both hitting and pitching like me slywink.

In all seriousness both sets of sliders make user pitching more difficult while making hitting more realistic (more CPU balls, more fouls, etc...). I've switched to Jistic's recently and I like it a bit better since it focuses more on user pitching then Pared's.

Then you can play the game for the next few years since the mods will extend the life of the game almost indefinitely.

I have the exact same problem. I've gotten to the point where I can make contact but I almost always pull it to far and foul it off. That or pop up or hit a weak grounder to first or third base. I do the same thing on really slow curves.

I've found the batting mini-game helps with this, it's gotten me to the point where I don't whiff on all off-speed pitches (plus you can get a ton of MVP points if you do well). I've unlocked Billy Williams and Fergie Jenkins so far smile.

I'm using those as well.

As far as the thoughest pitcher I've faced... Eric Gagne.  A high 90's fastball followed up with a 60 mph curve is frikkin unhittable.  I look so inept against him.

Which is my my absolutely lucky walk off solo home run with JT Snow in the bottom of the 16th against Gagne just made my night a few days ago biggrin

For a starter in the same vein, try hitting against Zach Greinke. Dude has a 52mph curveball. As someone on OS said, it resembles Bugs Bunny.

The thing with Gagne is... it's not just those two pitches.  Dude has like 3 more he busts out on occassion with too.  It's just not fair.

My strategy facing him is to wait until he throws a fastball, hope it's over the plate, and swing.  All the other pitches are just too wrong for me even to attempt swinging on.

Of course, by the time you recognize the pitch *is* a fastball, you're probably too late to swing.

Fun game.

gellar

I haven't tried to hit against Gagne yet, but does he hide the ball well during his delivery?

As LD mentioned, with hitters eye you can sometimes see the ball prior to release.

Wow, thanks for all the info! I'm thinking that if I can see individual stats after each game is simmed, that may be enough for me...I don't think that going back to older games will be all that necessary as long as I sim one-by-one.

By the way, I am only interested in MVP because I only own a PC...so I am taking all of this discussion and applying it to the PC version. Hopefully everything is pretty much the same, although who knows how the interface issue will compare between console and PC.

Lockdown, I'd definitely be interested in your slider settings when you feel pretty good about them. I wouldn't even know where to begin myself, and my 16-month old makes taking the time to work out all the settings impossible. Heck, it may take me 2 years just to get through a season.

Thanks again!

I have the PC version of MVP, so all my stuff comes from that version.

You can see individual game stats as long as you don't "Quick Sim". You first see a menu that lets you choose to "Play" or "Quick Sim" a game. Choose "Play". You then get three more options, "Play", "Sim", and "Manage Mode". Choose "Sim". It will sim the game and then show you the box score with each players individual stats.
1022  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Baseball Wars '05 on: March 03, 2005, 03:38:10 PM
Yep, mixing up locations and speeds is absolutely crucial. It's okay to stay with one pitch as your designated strike out or groundball pitch, but you have to set it up with a good mixture.

Take Zambrano for instance.

I set up a hitter with some breaking balls low and away and a couple tailing fastballs up and out of the zone. Typically this will put the count at 2-2 or 1-2 depending on how many balls he fouled off. I'll then throw his awesome splitter up and in and 3/4 of the time I'm able to jam the hitter and get a groundball.

Other times I'll start the AB off with a 96mph heater right under his chin. Typically the batter will back off a little bit. I'll then throw the splitter low and away, but still in the zone. Quite a few times the hitter will reach for it (since it will be a strike if he lets it go) and just knock a harmless GB to first.

In addition to those, you'll find that some hitters have huge holes in their swing. Brian Giles for instance. That fool couldn't hit a splitter up and in to save his life. So I'll work that area to death then, once he starts fouling them off, I'll toss a nice slow curve down and away. Whiff!

It's all about setting up your out pitch, whether your intent is a K or a GB.

With regards to game sliders, I'm using Pared's on OS. Seems to work really well on All-Star so far.

Lack of stats killing you: I think it's pretty much the same this year. Sorry.

Actually, it's quite a bit more in-depth. You can't view individual stats on a game by game basis, but season and career statistics are suprisingly deep. You can view all the standard stats for pitchers and batters, lefty-right splits, home-away splits (I believe, have to confirm), and quite a few others.

It's one thing that really caught my by surprise, usually EA could care less about stats.

I think the PoW is freakin' annoying. When he was in the airport telling the one guy about the whole thing it almost seemed like he was bragging. On an aside, his wife is the ugliest beauty queen I've seen in a while.

I'm kind of rooting for Rob & Amber. They played the first leg beautifully, catching up from being waaaay back in the pack. Plus, they seem like underdogs and the son's irrational hatred toward them only makes me cheer for them more.

The rest of the teams are just kind of there so far. The "life-long friends" are kind of interesting. They afforded the locals a great deal of respect which always wins points in my book. I can see them getting annoying reaaal quick though.

Hey, that's where my wife and I stayed when we went to SF for our honeymoon. Fantastic hotel.

You're right in the middle of the Financial District and it's just a quick walk to China Town. You're about 5-10 minutes away from the trolly car stop as well. That will take you right down to Fisherman's Warf. Also, you're a real quick trip from SBC Park, which is absolutely beautiful. Finally, the Museum of Modern Art and a really nice garden area (the name escaped me right now).

If you choose to do room service, you have to try their chicken wings. Fan-damn-tastic.

Let me know if you have any more questions, we were there for a week in a deluxe room on the 36th floor smile.

Hmmm...last I checked we've been covering PC stuff, including reviews.  Just because the name has Console in it doesn't mean we don't cover PC stuff post-GG death.

Yes, I know that. But I figured everyone here was talking about console versions of the game and that was my cheesy way of saying that slywink.

Anywho, I played about 10 more games of MVP last night and I'm in love. Easily the best arcade baseball game since High Heat.

I moved up to All-Star level and used some sliders I found on OpSports. First game with them Kerry Wood got shelled, gave up 3 HR's (two to Dave Roberts   ) and walked a few batters. I was only able to put one run on Woody Williams, but I drew a couple walks and squandered a base loaded - no outs situation. I also had a couple very memorable battles where I worked the count full and then fouled off 3-4 pitches. Good stuff.

Second game was Carlos Zambrano vs. Brian Lawrence. Pitched beautifully with Zambrano, his splitfinger is absolutely wicked. I was able to jam hitter after hitter with that thing. Zambrano went 8 innings with 3 hits, 9 K's, and 0 runs allowed. It took me a while to pick up on Lawrence's curveball, but I got the hang of it eventually. In the 6th the Cubs offense finally let loose.

Walker led off with a single to left, Nomar then drew a walk. A-Ram came up and jacked a 3 run HR onto Waveland. Lee then came out and hit a double and was knocked in by a Burnitz single. Lawrence was then taken out and that was pretty much ballgame. We got a couple more runs of Seanez and Dempster allowed one in the 9th. Final score 8-1.

Fun stuff smile.

I realize the song came out in the early 1990's and your DJ's may be trying to re-capture their youth, but please understand something: There are other Aerosmith songs available, and no, Cryin' doesn't count.

I also do not consider "Love In An Elevator" as "classic rock" as I was listening to the radio the day it debuted, and I'm south of 30. Hendrix, Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Led Zepplin, and to a lesser extent Blue Oyster Cult, help comprise true "classic" rock. Now, were you to include the early '70's version of "Dream On" that routinely plays on FM radio (and is so old it doesn't even sound like Aerosmith) then I would agree. But "Livin' On The Edge"? Hardly.

As a rep of OO, I wanted to chime in with a couple things.

Since it seems some people feel like there is, I want to say that we do not want/seek/whatever any sort of competition with CG. I, and many other OOers, regularly browse CG and I certainly enjoy the front page here just as much as the forums. It's great stuff, especially the screen shots slywink.

That said, I wouldn't worry about OO dying. We have a very active community, quite a few of whom joined us from places other the GG. A front page is coming and we hope to offer content that will set up apart from other gaming sites. If it becomes popular (perhaps popular enough to crush a quad Xeon 3ghz slywink ) then great, if not, that's fine. We're just happy to have an audience who enjoys something we've put together.

Anywho, while I understand the urge to compare the two sites we don't look at it that way. I don't think the success of one necessarily means the other will fail. Ron runs a great site here and I wish him only the best of luck.

I split my time at both.  At first I didn't like the idea, but I ended up missing a lot of people.  So I just visit both sites

I'm sure that was in jest, but just to clarify OO was not started because we felt "powerless". The ideas that are going into OO were around long before GG went down. However, since any changes to GG would have to have gone through Rich we were not able to put them into action.

Once it became clear that GG was not going to come back, we chose to start a site where we could take our experiences at GG and the ideas we had and put them in place.

It had nothing to do with power and it had nothing to do with CG.
