Oh. My. God.

I was pretty excited about this game back when it was announced, but I finally saw the gameplay trailer and I am close to wetting myself.  I am so very IN on this one. I don't need crazy difficult metal guitar solos to enjoy a RB game. Hell, I only end up really liking a relatively small percentage of the songs in the RB games anyways. Difference is, i KNOW that I'm going to like every single one of these tracks. As a Beatles fan, being able to play during through of the different Beatles "eras" is going to be sweet sweet fan service.

Also, ditto to everything godhugh said.

Well... I think plot-wise I am getting darn close. I think I will be having wiggly alien lesbian sex anytime now!  eek

Having put in about 15 hours now (I think I am almost finished), I have to say that I love this game. Please bear in mind that I rank KOTOR as one of my top 3 games of all times, so I think it's fair to say that I am a fan of Bioware-style plot driven RPGs.

As far as Matt Peckham's 60/100 score goes...

That guy is an idiot. I have never liked his writing style. He writes in the most pretentious tones and rarely even makes any valid points. With his heinous NWN2 review and now this, it's obvious that the guy just "doesn't get" Bioware RPGs. I am so glad that I do not see his reviews in CGW/GFW anymore. If you can manage to actually make it through his review of Mass Effect, it becomes quite clear that he likes his Halo. Which makes the score clear as day to me.

Is Mass Effect GOTY? I don't know. I will have to see how I feel after I have finished it, but I definitely put it up as one of the strongest contenders. I already am planning my character for my second run through. Very rarely do I want to play a game directly after finishing it. I have only done it twice (KOTOR and Bioshock). I personally love shooters and RPGs, this has both AND a great story.

And I have GOT to get that Mass Effect art book. Whoever made that Syd Mead reference is spot on.

I absolutely hate this product.

When I installed the software for the device, it makes my Logitech Keyboard and my Logitech mouse stop working. There are a ton of people having the exact same problem from what I could tell on some forums. I was able to get all 3 working but it took a bunch of coaxing.

So once I got the damn thing sync'd and everything was looking good in the "Game Controllers" in the control panel, but in the first game I tried with it, (Marvel Ultimate Alliance, which has native support for the wired 360 controller) it did not work correctly at all. The button mappings are completely different to the game than the wired 360 controller. "No big deal" I think to myself, I'll just re-bind the buttons. Well this is where it goes downhill, when I pull the triggers, instead of mapping a button or axis, the game thinks you are pressing multiple button and the mapping get fubared. Again, the buttons all work correctly in the windows calibration utility, but in MUA, it is completely unusable.

After about an hour futzing with the damn thing, I just uninstalled the software, yanked the device and threw it in the closet. Big waste of $20 if you ask me.

Apparently NVidia is working on a new driver to increase performance in STALKER especially for 8800 users and to add SLI support.

Howabout they make it so 8800GTX users can actually play with Dynamic Lighting on on a WinXP machine?

Amen to that. I am glad (not really) that it's not just me. I cannot get this game playable with dynamic lighting on regardless of my resolution. I tried 800x600 and it still dips into the teens at many points. This is with a 4800+ AMD X2, 2 GB DDR400 RAM, 8800GTX on a freshly loaded OS. That is unacceptable performance with this hardware especially considering how well everything else plays on my system at max resolutions (1920x1080).

I really want to get into this game, but it simply won't let me due to the framerates and I refuse to play with static lighting.

Back ON TOPIC!!!!!

Download the Viva Pinata demo.

Big ol' +1.  After I got past the initial "what the hell am I doing playing a kids game" feeling, I was completely hooked.  Viva Pinata is a damn fine game.

It gives you first-hand experience in mating incestuous candy-stuffed rabbits!

You can't forget smashing said rabbits and feeding their candy to their children.   icon_twisted

I just wish Viva Pinata had sold better, hopefully it will end up with decent final sales as it slowly creeps up in numbers.

I still watch the cartoon every Sunday.  Hope that helps. smile

I hate to sya it, but I think the cartoon hurt the sales of the game in the long run.  The game and cartoon are nothing like each other aside from the characters/animation.

The "demo" certainly detered me from getting the game. I remember thinking "This is a demo?" I thought demos actually let you... ya know... play the game.

Hetz and his constant 360 bashing is really annoying.

Let me break it down like this...

I have not had a single problem with my 360 and I have had it for 14 months now.

Out of all of my consoles, I have only had one fail and it was a PS2. My original xbox still works like a charm and certainly garnered FAR more playtime than my PS2.

So from my personal experience, I would say that I have had infinitely more reliability with my xbox branded consoles.

Anyways,

CSL, you really can't go wrong with any of the titles you listed. They are all excellent.

Are you saying that the 360 has no reliability issues?

Platforms aside... it's all about the GAMES man! Can we NOT talk about 360 vs PS3 for one freaking second. This thread started with someone genuinely excited about getting a console, and you are just trying to kill his enthusiasm because of your personal crusade.

14  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: 3,000 Nerd Points on: April 02, 2007, 02:38:39 PM
i have to admit it...

I am pretty addicted to achievement points myself. I really thought the idea was silly at first but now I find myself doing the same things as ATB simply to get more points.

So far the easiest games to collect achievement points for me have been:

Fight Night Round 3: I got all 1000 points within 2 days of getting the game. All you need to do is play in career mode and win all of the titles.

King Kong: Just play the through the game and get all 1000 points in about 7 hours.

NBA Street Homecourt: You can get 900 of the 1000 points in singleplayer mode and all of them are easy to get.

These 2900 points make up for over half of my points yet the 3 games have been played FAR less than my other titles.

Hardest so far:

Ninety Nine Nights: I have played quite a bit and have yet to get a single point. frown

Mine is damn near silent when playing DVDs as it doesn't have to spin so fast. Games... now that's another matter. My Gears of War disc must be uneven or something because when that game is loading data from the disc, it's hella loud.

Overall, it really isn't that bad. Once the data is loaded, it quiets down considerably. I am not bothered by mine, however it is in the same room as my gaming PC and fileserver(with 8 spinning HDDs). Nothing is louder than my fileserver. NOTHING! I always buy blocks in 2000 pt allotments (is that the second most amount) and just go from there. I don't buy points for one thing, I buy them to replenish and use and its entirely optional. Again, if this is make or break, don't buy the points. If quibbling over what did you say, a $1.45 is a big deal, then this definitely is something you should think twice about supporting.

That is not the point. The point is that we have to pay $50 a year for something that should be free.

All the other stuff (achievements, gamerpoints, friends list etc...) those are all available with a Silver Membership, so you are not paying for that anyway. You are paying for multiplayer and getting demos/content a week earlier than people on the Silver membership. That is it and that is a ripoff, IMO.

Sony has free online, great for them, lets see what happens when they have 6 million people online instead of 600,000.  Hopefully it holds up... if it doesn't there will be more outrage if they have to charge for it then there would be if they had charged for it to begin with.

This is exactly what I was trying to say except Arkon accomplished it much more quickly and eloquently.

I don't think Sony can sustain an online infrastructure that can compete with XBL for free. Hell, I hope they can and directly force MS to make theirs free. This could very well happen, but I am sure MS is waiting to see if they NEED to. Which at this point, they don't.

I generally have no lag problems with Live either.  My other question about the dedicated servers Sony is providing is how long until those are full?  Right now, there can't be a huge number of gamers on the service, and I would imagine that their servers have a finite amount of bandwidth.  If those servers are all that are available, then wouldn't that bandwidth eventually get used up, causing problems?  While Live is peer-to-peer, which causes its own problems, wouldn't it also allow for a much larger base of users?

Of course, I'm far from network savvy, but that's how it looks from my perspective.  I also suspect that MS will take steps to improve their service if Sony starts to provide good competition in that arena.

If it is true that all PSN games are hosted BY Sony on dedicated servers, it would (depending on the popularity) put an immense strain on both their servers and their bandwidth. They would need to constantly expand and upgrade to facilitate the hosting of thousands of games for potentially hundreds of titles for an indefinite span of time. And all of this for free? I seriously doubt it could last a year if all of this were true.

And what happens when games start to lose their fresh "sheen" and less and less people are playing a specific title online? Is Sony just going to continue running servers for said game for the few dozen people that may still play it? Or will they have to drop the online support of the game at which point no one will be able to play it?

Yes, dedicated servers are the ideal way to host multiplayer games, but I don't see it working in the long haul for consoles. The good thing about peer-to-peer is that years down the road when some people want to fire up an old game, as long as others are still wanting to play it online, they can. This would not be the case if you were dependent on someone else's dedicated server.

I still have a hard time believing that Sony hosts all of the multiplayer games on PSN. For instance, if you want to play Marvel Ultimate Alliance with a friend on PSN, how the hell does it work if it's not peer to peer? You set up a game and all of the sudden Sony is there to host it for you and your friends? Does PS3's MUA even support online?

I'm not trying to bash Sony, I just want to know how it all works now and how they hope to continue this service for free. This is more speculative banter than anything else.

By the way, I am not too thrilled about paying for XBL either, but then again... I can afford $50 a freaking year.

Don't these statements contradict?

"While admitting that ‘Xbox Live is overall offering a better online service right now'"

and then:

"Sony is offering virtually lag-free dedicated servers at no cost, while on Xbox Live you are paying for a more laggy peer-to-peer service"

Wha?

What he says is true. XBox Live, feature wise, is more advanced than PSN. That has nothing to do with dedicated servers and the fact that Live uses Peer-to-Peer for multiplayer.

One one hand, he is stating that XBL is better, yet then goes on to say how laggy it is implying that it is worse than PS3's offering. Peer to peer isn't always "laggy" and depends entirely on several factors but mostly the bandwidth of the host and P2P makes more sense in a console-to-console gaming environment. Is he saying that all PS3 online games are hosted by Sony on a server somewhere? If so, how long do expect them to maintain that for free as the library of online games grows? For other "dedicated server" setups like we see on the PC side (Counterstrike, Battlefield, etc) it is up to the community typically to sustain this, I don't see how Sony expects to do the same indefinitely.

I am just reacting to what I see as an extremely biased article but ultimately I really don't care one way or another who "wins" the console war. I doubt there will be a real "loser" in the end anyways. I don't want to start another 360 vs PS3 feature bulletpoint war.

Oscuro's Oblivion Overhaul (OOO 1.31): Changes so much, that I am not even going to begin to comment.
Natural Environments: This is a must, it makes the weather and sky look amazing especially if your video card can handle HDR.
Qarl's Texture Pack: Amazing texture overhaul.

Also of note:
Ren's Beauty Pack: Adds a ton of hairstyles and a new Elf race that looks amazing.
Normally I would suggest one of the many LOD mods for distant textures, but since the new patch addresses this, there is little point.

I will have to try and find it tonight. I have a shiny new 8800GTX coming from NewEgg today, this will be a nice game to give it a test run on.

I just hope I can play with the Dynamic Lighting@1920x1080 without choking up my system. Any 8800GTXers playing at a high res? (1920x1080 or 1920x1200).

I imagine with the new card, it may be possible.

Specs:
AMD X2 4800+
2 GB RAM
ATI x1900xt (soon to be 8800GTX)

People keep saying the game looks dated, but hot damn, some of these screenies look amazing to me. People compare it to HL2 as far as graphics, but Stalker looks way better to me. (but then again, I haven't actually played it yet).

Color me excited.

I just picked this up yesterday. I have only put about an hour into it, so I can't say much about it. I do love the fact that it is one of the first (if not the first) xbox 360 games to support native 1080p. Having just purchased a 1080p tv, I wanted to see if it looked as crisp as the PC games I play on it. Well, Homecourt looks amazing at 1080p and still maintains smooth gameplay. This is a perfect title to do 1080p on as there are not a lot of characters to render at once. They can really pack the detail into the 6 players on the court and the environments.

Being able to download more than a stupid 50MB limit for downloadable games would make me want one even more. The new Tekken HD is 850MB. It would never happen on the 360, due to that stupid limit and the fact that they didn't include a hard drive on every system sold.

?

I recall downloading PLENTY of demos that were a GIG+ on XBL. If you are comparing a professionally made Tekken Demo to the games on Live Arcade... well that is just silly. Yeah, I imagine that Tekken HD will be more impressive than Gauntlet.  Roll Eyes

I am with some of the others, I know deep down that I will eventually get a PS3, but now is not the time. All of those "franchise" games that Hetz is waiting for are not even close to being out. Personally, I want to wait and see what the next version of the PS3 is like. I waited on the 360 and I am glad I did considering the failure rate on the launch consoles.

I even have a 1080P television and would love to see the PS3 on it, but not for ONE game (resistance).

How is the performance in RSV with that monstrous video card? I am thinking about getting one, but have read that the drivers are still a bit buggy.

The game is cosmetically identical to the 360 version, except the fact that they forgot to implement widescreen support on the PC version. icon_rolleyes You can use some hacked files to get widescreen support here:
http://www.widescreengamingforum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=8072
There are some issues using this when zooming into weapons and during a few cutscenes, but overall it works very well. Let's just keep our fingers crossed for a patch with official support.

The game also has some performance issues that are not a problem on the 360 version. I have a pretty good gaming rig (AMD X2 4800+, 2GB RAM, ATI X1900XTX, RAID0) and it chugs in certain areas even at a lower resolution (1280x800). I have both the PC version and the 360 version and have them both hooked up to my 24" Dell 2405FPW. PC via DVI and 360 via Component. I can get a side-by-side comparison on the monitor via PIP. In places where the PC gets sluggish, the 360 remains smooth.

The control scheme on the PC works well and utilizes the 2nd mouse button for the cover system. (the PC version supports the 360's gamepad, but why in the world would you want to use a gamepad on a PC FPS?).

Gameplay is a blast. The co-op story mode is great, although there is more polish in the 360 version. With the built-in support for voice communication via xbox live, your character's lips move as you talk. This feature is missing in the PC version as it does not have built-in voice comm. The map-your-face to your online avatar is also missing from the PC version. Other than that, the gameplay is identical to its 360 brother.

Graphically, it ranges from average to excellent. The textures are a bit fuzzy, but the overall look is very solid. The physics and destructable environments are very nice. Heavy machinegun+Casino floor=viceral fun for the entire family.

Enemy AI seems to be very good as well. They will surprise you often. They don't seem to stick to a set path and your experience through the same level can vary quite a bit. This is especially true in the "Terrorist Hunt" mode. It never seemed to be the same. Controlling your squad is very easy and you can do many of the tricks that we are used to from games like Swat4. You can stack up the AI companions on doors, mark targets for the AI, have them enter the room using various tactics. Overall it works pretty well.

I hope more developers start incorporating more coop gameplay into their titles as it is my new "must-have" feature. After Gears of War, I just don't view shooters in the same way.

Daeghun is the worst of NWN2 voice acting, that I have encountered.  Most of the VO in NWN2 is good to great.

Wait until you meet Elanee's giant bear friend.  :icon_eek:

Worst.Overacting.Ever.

Well, this kid beat the shit out of someone when he stole the PS3s, so it's not out of the realm of possibility that he did something violent and stupid to get himself killed.

Like pressing the X button.

I know that this subject matter is NOT funny... but that post sure is.

I also remember the many Derek Smart flame war threads at GG. I was in utter disbelief at how smug that guy was to pretty much everyone. In fact I think one of my first posts on this here forum made some sort of Derek Smart joke.

Using the widescreen commandline switches does not "stretch" the image. The aspect ratio stays correct, but instead of "true" widescreen with more viewable horizontally (Hor+), it actually just crops off the top and bottom of a typical 4:3 image (Vert-). So in actuality, widescreen gamers are at a disadvantage. I don't see why EA/Dice can't simply comprimise and take a little away from the vertical viewing and adding a little on the sides. This way there would be no substantial advantage to either option. With the way it is now (like BF2), the FOV simply feels too zoomed in when playing in WS.

EA is so lame.

I see ads all the time now.

There is always multiple Intel Core 2 Duo billboards plastered all over the battlefield now.

Pretty lame.

They mention something functioning like the middle mouse button... but ingame, the MMB has never done anything for me.

So getting a keybinding to do nothing... I'm not much of a programmer, but I think even I could manage that one.

Well, it is by default the button to rotate the camera. Finally we will be able to remap that key. (of course the nwn2mouse.exe mod does this just fine)

By the way, Obsidian has released the beta for 1.03 and it is available for download.

At first I thought it was Super Man.  not Superman.

As in Nazi super soldiers as opposed to the tights wearing boy scout?

Yeah... I can see how it was confusing. I was also hoping for yet another WWII game with a twist.
