8681  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Which 360 Market share do you fall into? on: August 19, 2005, 09:06:07 PM
Definitely $400 option, but the question is when.  I'm hoping to hold out until the PS3 info starts to trickle in so I can make my decision, but if there's a game I have to play before then, I'll plop down the cash.

EA today announced that, based on internal data, Madden NFL 06 scored big at retail in its first week in stores and sold-thru more than 1.7 million copies, making it the biggest week one launch of a Madden NFL Football game in the franchise's sixteen-year history.

"Gamers were demanding the best Madden NFL Football ever this year and the response at retail indicates that we delivered the game that everyone wanted," said EA Vice President of Marketing Todd Sitrin. "Consumers have voted with their dollars, and the vote is in -- this is the best version of Madden NFL Football ever."

"EA ups its game for the best Madden yet," said Matthew Kato, Senior Editor of Game Informer magazine. "They delivered substantial innovation to the Madden franchise, making Madden NFL 06 a must-have title of the year."

"You'd think the big news in the locker-room this week was the start of the preseason, but all everyone could talk about was the new Madden game," said Ahman Green, All Pro Running Back for the Green Bay Packers. "Everyone had to check out their new ratings and the new features in the game."

Based on internal tracking, EA estimates:

    * Madden NFL 06 had the biggest week one launch in the history of the franchise, selling more than 1.7 million units.
    * NCAA Football 06 was the #1 selling video game on the PlayStation2 computer system in July 2005.
    * With double digit sales percentage increases this year, both Madden NFL 06 and NCAA Football 06 are tracking well ahead of last year's launch sales.
    * Within a month of NCAA Football 06 shipping and with Madden NFL 06 on store shelves only a few days, EA SPORTS(TM) football fans have played more than 1.5 million games through the PlayStation 2 console and on Xbox Live on the EA SPORTS Nation.

"The strong starts of NCAA Football 06 and Madden NFL 06 set the pace for a strong EA SPORTS lineup of titles this fall. Up next from EA are FIFA Soccer 06, Tiger Woods PGA TOUR 06, NBA LIVE 06 and the rest of our EA SPORTS lineup," added Sitrin.

Of course, it is based on "internal data", so take that with a grain of salt.

Why am I stupid for not getting the $400 bundle?

I don't play on Live, so I don't need the headset or the wireless ethernet.
I don't have an HD TV, so I don't need the cables.
I don't sit on my couch but right in front of my TV, so I don't need a wireless controller.

The only advantage for me is HD caching. Well how much will that improve my life? $100 worth? $60 worth (since I will have to get a memory card)

I don't think I am a complete idiot - I think the $400 bundle sucks for anyone not playing on line.

Why are you buying an XBox 360, a game console designed around Hi Def, Online gaming and wireless technology, if you intend to use 10% of the functionality?  Why not just keep your XBox, or better yet a PS1?

If it was designed around that technology, you'd think they'd include it with every one they sell... slywink

Game companies are sick of losing money on their consoles. I can't understand how any one can knock Microsoft for the $399 price. They aren't short changing anyone, they are just trying to give people more options by offering the $299 version.

If Sony releases the PS3 for less than $400 I will be shocked. Not only that, but just think about how much money they can potentially lose if they price the PS3 at $400. There is the system, the built in wireless adapter, the Hi-Def dvd, and I have heard that they are also considering an optional hard drive. I wouldn't be mad at Sony if the PS3 started at $600 dollars with all the crap they are putting in it.

Then there is Nintendo, and I wouldn't be suprised at all if the Revolution was only (ha only) $200. Yet they have catches too, charging to download all the games for one, and the other is that for that price, their machine just won't be able to do what the other two can. I know that it is all about the "game play", but if they don't improve the tech, they can't improve the gameplay.

People might not understand or like what Microsoft has done, but they have just opened gamers eyes to the $400 console price tag. It's kind of funny, because they totally took the burden off of Sony.

Errm I think I've yet to read a post where someone is complaining about the $400 pricetag.  People are complaining about the 2 SKU versions.  It's bad news for everybody.  I agree with the person who stated that the harddriveless consoles won't be gimped.  You know why?  Because developers will be focusing on the 85% majority of gimped Xbox owners (my guess)  for there games.  So it is actually the superior HD that is going to have it's games gimped-they won't be nearly as cool as they could have been.

Not true. The Oblivion devs have specifically said that it will run MUCH better on the HD versoin, than on the core system. Therefore the hd-less version is gimped.

He didn't say all games, but 85% of games. In any case, its undoubtably true that many future games won't use the HDD as much as they would have if there had been one SKU.

Yeah... and in reflecting over this last night, that's my main disappointment.  I was expecting the 360 to be a bit more, I guess.  For the pricetag, its basically still a prettied up XBox with not a lot new to offer.  Integrating the Hard Drive more was one of the things I was looking forward to with this generation.  The launch titles are ok, but nothing spectacular.  I suppose I'll have to wait until either a) a price drop, or b) I see a must have game.  Much in the same way I treated the current XBox, and the Gamecube.

For some reason though, I'm now more excited to see what Sony has to offer.  I've always been a fan of what Sony's done gaming wise, and am curious to see what they can do with this generation..

The real pisser is that MS has basically given Sony the greenlight to charge $500 for their top of the line unit, cause supposedly it's "so much better" than teh XBox.

Ungh, I spend stupidly... but even this is a bit too stupid for me.

Microsoft never promised that it would be wireless out of the box, as far as the network adapter went.  Sony did promise that with the PS3 at one time, but they have since said that they aren't going to do that.

Got it yesterday and played two preseason games last night.  I'm pretty impressed actually.  The game has a good flow to it, and the AI actually seems pretty smart.  The new animations are noticeable and pretty good.  I actually like the new presentation as well... some nice touches (but nowhere near ESPN caliber).  The new QB vision thing is well implemented, but takes a LOT of getting used to and makes the passing game much, much more challenging.

Overall, for a game I was expecting to be underwhelmed with, I'm really pleasantly surprised.

One game in and I like it better than last year. Not sure I like the vision cone thing but running isn't impossible and there was some pretty accurate stats.

Beat Dallas 21-10. It was 14-10 in the 4th quarter and Drew threw a pick on my 10, then then they drove down inside my 20 with under a minute and Drew threw another pick that Dawkins returned for a TD to get the final score.

Drew with 2 picks at crucial moments in the game? I'd say that's pretty damn accurate!

I love the Madden game because since 2004, it's been the best Pro Football game for me.  The engine needs work, but the game felt more complete than the ESPN 2k4 and 2k5 iterations.  I kept on waiting for ESPN to make the leap to the next level, but they never did.

There is a difference between native 720p and upscaled 720p. Many sets sold now do upscaled 720p, but very few (unless they are plasma) do native 720p.

If I'm not mistaken, DLP (arguably the most popular on the market right now) native resolution is 720p.

Some ps3 stuff from PSM via Shacknews

http://www.shacknews.com/onearticle.x/38046

Cool... my thoughts below:

    * Exhaustive connectivity between PSP and PS3: PSP will interface with the PS3 through Bluetooth, serving as a remote and media manager for the console. PSP can also access PS3 over the internet, so the two can interface even when you're far away. - Neat.  Seems like this could be cool.
    * No standard 1080i (or 1080p) support: Most games will apparently run at 720p; use of 1080i and 1080p is only at the developer's discretion. All games should have support for 480p and 480i for gamers without HDTVs. - While I'd prefer a stronger forced standard, I have no problem with this.  The majority of current HD games run in 720p and not 1080i and most of the new HDTVs (DLPs in particular) all can support a 720p signal.  More importantly, MY TV can support an HDTV signal smile.
    * Wider storage medium support than expected: PS3 will support Memory Sticks, Compact Flash, SD cards, Blu-Ray (of course), and SACD. UMD support doesn't seem present, though. - Groovy
    * Software-only backwards compatibility: While PS3 will play PS1/PS2 games, it has no ports for peripherals for those systems, including their memory cards. All save data must be accessed through flash memory cards (that means no save data can be stored on the hard drive either, according to PSM). PSM speculates that Sony will release a USB multi-tap like device with legacy support for controllers and memory cards. - Backwards compatibility is always appreciated... so this is neat.
    * Wireless access point: The PS3 will serve as a wireless access point (think they'll go out of their way to lock out access to Nintendo's DS online service?). The PSM article also mentions router functionality, though past reports have indicated that this will no longer be the case. - Totally unnecessary.
    * Release date: Just a general "spring 2006". Some developers assume this applies to Japan, Europe, and North America. - That'll give the XBox at least a 4 month lead.  Will be interesting to see what happens, that's for sure.
    * Wacky controller: Yeah, it's still a banana. - Yeah... that fucker is strange.  Then again, the XBox survived with its horrible launch controller, so hopefully Sony fixes this ASAP.  Either that or hopefully it's way more comfortable than I think it will be.

An excerpt of note, regarding the PS3 demos at E3:

None of the game footage was taken from software running on systems using the final PS3 graphics chip, the Reality Synthesizer (RSX). ... The most stunning demo, Killzone PS3, was from an actual game engine running on an alpha kit--at less than five frames per second. The footage was sped up to 60fps in post-production. Sur-fucking-prise!

All in all, still interested to see it.

That is just insane, since 60-70% of HDTV's have no support for 720p and most that do have to upscale it to 1080i. There are not that many native 720p sets out there.

Really?  Source of stats?

I remember personally hunting out a 720p compatible set with my last purchase as my previous one didn't do 720p and it royally pissed me off.  I had no problem finding a 720p set.

Quote from: "Hetz"

Is Sony TRYING to lose this war before it even starts?

- No 1080i Support
- No standard hard drive
- A god awful controller
- Could launch a year after the 360 in the states
- Could have a $500 price tag

1) Probably a non-issue.  The % of folks who own an HD Set vs the % of folks who own a non 720p HD Set vs the % of folks who don't own HD at all is probably equal.
2) Yeah this blows, but if it takes CompactFlash, I don't particularly give a hoot.  1GB of CF = cheap!
3) Looks bad, but never touched it.  Potentially awful controller, but who knows.
4) Could also launch in Spring, like they say.
5) Could also not.

I've turned a 2 hour a day commute into a 30 minute a day one, so I've reclaimed a lot of my life back just due to that.  The area is much quieter, less crowded, but just as lively.  I like it here a lot more than LA, that's for sure.

Ugh. I spent half the summer studying for Cali, and then decided I didnt have enough time to prepare so spent three weeks basically doing Maryland, and then in 6 months I get to do that. But I digress. Your poor woman is doing what is called the Performance Exam today. It is two 3 hour problems/memos, where you are given about a 40 or 50 page case packet with a couple of real cases, statute extracts, and a long ass fact pattern and are basically told: Write a memo and tell us what legal position we should take on this and why.

Its long, not particularly hard, boring, and requires a lot of concentration. I feel for her. Plus the California essays (6 1 hour mixed subjects) are normally brutally hard. Yeah. All the best of luck to her gellar. What kind of job is she getting? I am moving to LA hopefully in a few weeks (I know you just moved out frown ), but I dont think I will practice law for at least the first year-I wouldnt mind working with a game dev for a bit while I get settled, but god help me I am getting out of Maryland, and I do love California.

Actually, today is what she's looking forward to the most.  In her BarBri classes, she always placed best in the Performance Exams part.  She has a lot of training in this sort of thing, pretty much working for law firms exclusively since her freshman year of undergrad.  She's also an excellent writer.  That being said, the passage rate for teh CA bar is still insane.  Thankfully I'm doing well enough to support her if she needs to take it again.

She really wants to get into estate planning, but that field requires more apprenticeship than she can probably find at this point.  With the move to NorCal, she's going to look heavily at corporate/IP law.  She has zero interest in litigation.

And if you're looking to get into the gamedev industry, I have a few contacts I could give a ring.

Just responding to someone who seems to have a problem with me for no reason. I'll say nothing more.

Fair enough, I just figured we covered the whole genesis of the thing on OO well enough for long enough smile Everyone remember Slambie's little explosion?

That may well have been one of my favorite OO moments ever, actually.

I was laughing quite hard at that one... thanks for the reminder smile

I tried it, and even got some laughs out of it. Especially when I said I didn't like beer. That was some good funny.

You mean we didn't ban you after you committed such an atrocity?

First... Percy has little to no social issues, and I find it amusing that someone who knows very little about him would choose to even say that.  "Ceh" is a well adjusted dude who does, from what I can tell, just fine socially.  He certainly doesn't make up aliases over the internet, that's for sure.

Second, I'd like to extend anyone a welcome into IRC.  We're actually a friendly bunch, despite what some people (who've never been in there, AFAIK) may think.  We are different from OO and CG (though less so CG, IMHO) though in that we are not bound by a CoC.  If you're being a jackass, we'll call you one.  More importantly though, the IRC group is far more tight knit than CG or OO, being that there is a group of regulars who are pretty much in there on a daily basis and are in constant communication.  It's much like a neighborhood bar.  We look out for our own, and if you feel like an outsider... well, just stick around and I'm sure eventually you'll feel in.  There have been quite a lot of new folks lately (particularly with the popularity of our Tony Danza server), and some (Tals, Kymlaar, TwoSheds, Woober) have fit in very well and very quickly.

Again, it's a fun place.  It's my favorite place on the internet, full of people who are genuine, even if they are genuinely an asshole.  No presumption, no rules, just IRC.  Don't knock it till ya try it.

The controls in 2k5 were awesome until you went into "OMGZ CHAIN ANIMATION MODE" where you lost control of your player for a good 2-5 seconds while he went through umpteen different preprogrammed animations, none of which you really wanted.

It looked pretty cool, but was pretty damn annoying when all you wanted to do was go left.

That depends on which RB you are using.  If you try to make a quick cutback with a guys like Steven Davis or Corey Dillin you got a lot of that.  But with a small  back with high agility like Dunn or Quentin Griffin you could make some nasty cutbacks without all the hesitations.  That's one of the great things about 2K IMO.  The agility and body type of the back matters, not just speed like in Madden/NCAA.

That might explain it.  I played mostly with Rudi Johnson (Cincy) and Kevan Barlow (Frisco) and both of them aren't exactly shifty backs.  It's still damned annoying though.

As far as the game goes... you really need to get into the Dynasty.  ESPN does a single game (especially vs another player) incredibly well, but for long term vs CPU action, the EA series has it beat.
