8521  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / PS3 $500!?? on: January 13, 2006, 04:20:12 PM
If the system comes out for $500, I'll be stoked.  I've been expecting this machine to be recockulously expensive... at least now it's just stupidly expensive.

For those that have both PGR3 and Need4Speed, which one do you prefer?

i have NFS:MW for PC and PGR3, and it's honestly a tough comparison in my mind...they're two extremely different games.  NFS is definitely a more thrilling, adrenaline-pumping experience, while PGR3 is less exciting but more of a precision/skill game.  i enjoy the challenge of PGR3, but it's also a heck of a lot of fun to run from (and destroy) the cops in NFS without any concern for your own car.  i guess the better game really depends on your own tastes...both are good racers, but they're clearly aimed at different crowds.

Agreed.  I have both and play them equally.

I could give two shits about what format they choose.  In the long run, it doesnt really matter that much anyway.  My xbox360 is for playing games, if I want a blu-ray player, I'll get a stand alone player.  If I want a HDDVD player, I'll get a stand alone player.  This whole add-on boo anti-Microsoft thing is so over-exaggerated by some people it is actually comical (not referring to anyone in this thread or possibly even forum).  I mean sure, Microsoft could have waited an extra year and included one of these drives and charged us an extra $100-$150 for the premium pack.  Personally, I am very glad they didnt do that.

Werd.

Really like it actually... just a couple of critiques:

1) Could you possibly centered for those people using non-standard browser resolutions?

2) On the front page, I don't like how the 2nd (lower) quote box blends with the bottom table.  It doesn't match the rest of the site, I think.

8527  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Gaming in Hi Def: How do I tell the difference? on: January 09, 2006, 03:23:26 AM
On an XBox, the difference between 480p and 480i honestly isn't that great.  The colors will be a bit better due to using higher quality cables, but you won't see a huge jump in graphic quality until you play games that are higher  resolution.  Check out X-Men Legends for a good example of that.

I really wish they'd lower the prices a little bit on the Arcade stuff.  Some of the games on there cost upwards of $10 - you can buy Dark Cloud 2 or Metroid Prime 2 for that much smile

But it's not real money!  It's Live Points (or whatever they're called)!!

I love the Arcade... I just wish more stuff was there.  The idea of playing a bunch of my old middle school favorites online is just too awesome.

VY's talent probably won't translate directly into the NFL, but that doesn't mean there aren't NFL GMs salivating over him now.

I was trying to remember last night, how many running or scrambling QBs have won the Superbowl in the last 20 years?  I can’t think of any off the top of my head.

Steve Young.

Werd.  Though every scrambling QB is compared to Steve Young.  I think only Vince has a chance to live up to that.  He can actually throw a ball and is tough as nails.

I still worry for his safety though.  NFL Linebackers aren't going to miss tackles.

8535  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / USC/Texas on: January 05, 2006, 06:02:11 AM
Yeah it just doesn't translate.  I mean Reggie Bush, for example, will be a quality NFL running back, but he can't possibly dominate in the bigs like he did in college.  He's running behind a gigantic offensive line that dwarfs 90% of the competition.

It's even worse for VY.  He's faster than 99% of the guys on the field.  He's bigger and stronger than more than half of them.  He won't have that kind of advantage in the NFL.

VY is the man, that was amazing to watch.  If he doesn't leave for the NFL he's crazy.  There are NFL GMs drooling over this guy tonight.  How in the world did he stay so level-headed and calm on that last drive??  He looked like a seasoned pro driving his team down for the win.  250+ passing yards and 200 rushing yards?  That's crazy.

The problem is... his skill won't translate to the NFL.  At best he is Donovan McNabb.  The NFL defenses are SO MUCH FASTER that he won't just be able to outrun them.  A lot of his poise, I'd gather, comes from knowing that when it comes down to it, he's the best damn athlete on that field.  He won't have that in the NFL.  He'll be exciting to watch for sure, but he won't come to the same level of success as an NFL QB as a pocket passer.  In the draft, even trying to put aside my USC homerism, I'd still take Leinart over Young.

I'd love to be proven wrong though, he is fantastic to watch.

Yup. Vince Young won the Rose Bowl, not Texas. I need to amend my post because its obvious that Texas is just a front for Vince Young. Everytime it was "on the line," I'd start a mental count on how long before Young would run it in.

I totally agree... not that there's anything really wrong with that though.  The guy deserves this win.

Ultimately, USC had a few too many mistakes on offense to pull this off.  Namely, Bush's fumble.  You can't do that and beat Vince Young.

I have to say, the most fun I've ever had in a football game was with NCAA 2004 (I think). Trying to take Appalachian State from a tiny AA school to a national powerhouse was great (though I never did manage anything better than being a lower echelon SEC team). I don't know how accurate the stats were, but the gameplay was far and away the most fun I've had (I didn't play any later versions, so I can't say if the gameplay was improved).

Ditto here.  NCAA 05 and 06 pale in comparison to '04.  IMHO NCAA 04 was the pinnacle of the series.

Yep.  NCAA 2006 was pretty good though... 2005 was a total disaster.

I test drove the G35 and I was very impressed.   But if I were to buy a sedan right now it would be the Acura TL.  IMHO it's the best looking one out there.  My '98 Integra GS-R of old had 1 problem in the 4 years I owned it and that was just a misaligned tire.  I got mine at Goodson Acura and the service department was great all around (just routine maintence).

The TL is an amazing looking car, but she ain't no performance sedan.  Again, Wrong Wheel Drive.

Quote
I've had 2 friends and 2 family members own VWs and the problems they have encountered don't have so much to do with the engine mechanics as the trimmings. The seat belt coverings came off, the moon roof leaked, etc.  But I'd rather have those problems than the inverse.

Same here, though we are not immune to the engine mechanics either (see above).

The past few years I've noticed that I really don't sync with the designs of the European cars.  Audis are...nondescript, BMWs*, Mercedes just doesn't desing for my age bracket, SAABs are underpowered and Volvos have dull interiors.  I always thought I would buy European, but lately I've been really impressed with Japanese design and execution all around.  5 years ago it would've been flipped.

I drove a 99 Jetta for almost 7 years (up until mid-October when I was in a horrible accident and it was totalled) and the ONLY work that was ever done was brake pads and a fix for a thermostat that cost a whopping $58.00.

VW's in my experience have been reliable, but how you drive and frequency of preventive maintenance, play a key role.

Teh woman's New Beetle was by far the biggest piece of shit either of us have ever pwned or driven.  I seriously hated that car.  It was in the dealership a LOT.  Electrical problems up the wazzoo.  Shit just didn't work right.  Then one of the exhaust manifolds cracked.  The dealers in SoCal blew ass too, though thankfully everything was covered under warranty.  She had it from 99 - 05.  So glad when we got rid of it.

Based on your post, NFL2K5 would be totally the wrong game for you.  Go with Madden 06 on the XBox (or rather, wait until next year and hope the 360 version gets all of those features).  NFL2K5, while playing a fine game on the field, has one of the worst Franchise modes I've ever seen.  It's totally and utterly broken.

Yeah the GT has a pretty nice interior as far as Subaru's go.  The last few IS's I've priced out have topped well over $40k, but I wasn't looking at the barebones ones either.

I really like the G35.  The only reason I wouldn't jump on it is that it's nearing the end of it's product cycle and thus, is going to look older faster due to a new body style coming out.  I still love the car though.

Pretty good short list.  I absolutely love the G35 sedan.  The IS350 is a nice car fo'sho, but its a) recockulously expensive (looking at $43k, I think), and b) has a tiny friggin trunk.  To get the IS in your price range, you'd have to step down to the 300.  I like the Charger a lot too, but she's a heavy beast.

Other cars to consider:
Subaru Legacy GT - I like these a lot.
BMW 3 Series - If you like the IS, you gotta look at the car it's trying to copy.
Cadillac CTS - My pick of the group. This would be what I'd get if I had to buy something more responsible.
Chrysler 300M - Pretty much the Charger in a different skin.
Volvo S60 R - Bitchin' motor.
