8481  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / AMD Price Cut Chart on: July 19, 2006, 04:03:59 PM
Yeah I'm toying with the the Conroe 6600, but it's not a huge increase over the 5000+, which it's competitively priced against (I believe).  Also, the Conroe platform is newer and more costly than the AMD one, so it ends up being a bit more expensive and, in my eyes, possibly less stable (being new and all).  I still have a week to change my mind though.

I understand you, BUT why are things, ANYTHING, cut from the top of the line?
There should be everything and more in the 360 version.

I agree with Devil.  Ack...  stomach pain...  vomit...  Seriously, the 360 version should have extra stuff, not less.

I don't really care about school tests and such.  But aren't the PS2 and XBox playbooks a lot better and upgraded?  That would impact gameplay a lot.  What about some of the momentum stuff?

How is the 360's dynasty mode?  Just as good?

I believe the 360 actually has the better playbooks (could be wrong, but Im pretty sure I read that).

Momentum is there, it's just displayed differently.

The Dynasty mode doesn't seem to be missing anything for me.

If you're not a fan of soccer and aren't willing to spends many hours tweaking and learning a game; Winning Eleven 9 isn't your game.

The newest FIFA is apparently quite good.  Every FIFA release comes significantly closer to the perfect portrayal of the game that the WE series offers, but without having to learn a ton of moves and spend countless hours perfecting how you play.

FIFA World Cup is your game.

Indeed.

I already gained a number of the easy achievements from playing a couple exhibition games against the computer. Maybe you have to do what I did and  play on All-American skill level with 5 minute quarters?

I play Dynasty, All-American, 8 min quarters.  I got a few achievements last night.

Well, at least you can actually run in this game, but you have to make too many juke moves to do it.

The long ball looks like the way to go....just like previous Madden games.

Do we get the crappy radio commentators again?  I didn't hear any announcer during the gameplay video.

Yeah, just looks like another Madden release, just made prettier for the 360.

Dude... are you watching the same video I am?  This is a pretty significant step forward for Madden, at least in the graphics and animation category (which is all you can judge the video by).  Wow.

Personally I don't care too much about most of those features (except defensive hot routes). If the on the field gameplay is good I will buy it. I will probably rent it first though. EA has gotten my money for crappy games too many times before.

I'm just really tired of EA putting out crap.  They've released far to many games with missing features on the 360 and PSP, as well as games with minimal updates like Madden.

Well, to call a game feature reduced doesn't mean it's crap.  Most of the guys at Op Sports are quite happy with NCAA (and that forum, IMHO, is mostly 2k fanboys) and the general reviews (including the one you linked) are positive thus far.  The features that are missing wouldn't be missed AT ALL by me, so long as the fantastic Dynasty mode is still in tact.  I'm very excited to get home tonight and try this out, especially after all of the positive feedback thus far.

Is it possible to start up a multiplayer game with only a few friends just for fun?  For example, can Devil, Lockdown and I team up and play against the AI so that we can demonstrate our complete ineptness at controlling huge lumbering machines????  Or do you have to join all this squad bullshit that sounds completely ridiculous and a colossal waste of time.  I really hate that when you have plan, study, formulate, schedule, and jump through hoops just to sit down for a half hour and play a fun multiplayer session.

That's pretty much what we've been doing at BC.  Orpheo and I have been doing 2 player co-op vs AI with the occassional 2v2 PVP.  The AI isn't all that much of a challenge, but it's still pretty fun.  Our squad right now is just a handful of us just screwing around with the game.

Why is 05 the worst? It's the only one I've ever played and I absolutely love it. Is 04 or 06 even better? Am I missing out by not playing either of those?

04 was by far the best of the series (possibly the best football game ever made, actually).  06 was better than 05, but not by a great margin.  It certainly wasn't better than 04.

8497  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Ever bought anything by Bose? on: July 11, 2006, 03:37:16 PM
Quote from: "Interloper"
I'll  add this:  Bose isn't pricy, or should I say overpriced, due to quality, it's due to their enormous advertising budget.  I literally think not a day goes by that I don't hear or see an ad for them.

I've not been impressed with them.  A friend has a pair of aviation headseats from them (not cheap) and I tried them.  I payed just over half what they wanted the Bose, and mine are quieter and more comfortable.  Also, having heard a few of their stereo speakers left me unimpressed.  I'd take Klipsch over them anyday (and have).

You know... for noise cancelling headsets, I cannot recommend Shure enough.  Folks in my industry who travel a lot have been recommending them to me for years and I finally pulled the trigger a few months ago.  FANTASTIC.

They don't use the "standard technology" that the rest of noise cancelling devices do... they just simply make a damn fine earbud headphone with a snug fit to your ear (you get about a dozen different choices in the "fit kit" that comes with the buds) and it works great.  Best I've ever tried.

As far as Klipsch goes, I honestly find them starting to become a bit overrated and commercialized themselves.  Very similar to what happened to Rockford Fosgate in the car audio industry of the 1990s.  You'll find far better value and quality in the direct internet order brands, I think.

Of course, if you like it, that's all that matters.

Yeah... listen to a lot of stuff for sure.  However, it's really rather difficult to have a TRUE listening test as each store will set up their equipment and setup to favor one set over another pretty easily.

Also, for some people, spending the $500 more on Bose instantly meants its better to them.  I am not going to waste my time trying to convince anyone otherwise... so long as they're happy.  Honestly that's what drives me nuts about enthusiast hobbies; everyone is hell bent on convincing everyone else that their decision was the "right" one and that everyone else is an idiot for thinking otherwise.  If my buddy thinks his Bose system sounds better than my Denon/Ascend/Hsu combo, he's more than welcome to continue thinking it.  No worries over here.

I agree, but in this case, I just didn't want someone to spend extra money, buying a name, when you can save money, get better quality, better performance, and a lot more functionality and flexibility.

That's my point though.  So long as that someone is not me, I don't care what the hell they do or think.

gellar

Well, I like to help people save a buck when I can, especially when it comes to home theater. It's much better to save money or put that extra money into another component, especially when you can save cash AND get better gear.

Oh see... if they're ASKING me what to buy, I'd be more than happy to list off a handful of names that they should listen to.  That's a different situation entirely smile.

Pretty much.

Shamrock was going to get stopped anyway... he was completely out of it and was not defending himself at all.  I would have liked to see Tito pound him some more, but oh well.

The "main event" itself was a total waste and bore.  I used to enjoy Andrei... not so much anymore.

I did find it amusing, however, that all of the highlights of the night (Knockout, Submission) were during fights that WERE NOT TELEVISED.

Lovely.

I thought the Hornet was basically a pig in the sky.  The F-16 was always the best turning/quickest fighter around in my recollections.  Unless the Super Hornets changed this.  The Hornets were always the jack of all trades, good at nothing type fighters, that came from a bloated budget.  Never an impressive plane.
