Not to cross pimp too much, but you may want to take a look at CSL's post in our forums, Canuck.  It may be more to your liking.

8484  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / When will the price of gasoline change your habits? on: April 27, 2006, 11:18:23 PM
32 mile commute round trip (160 miles/week)
19 mpg on average
$3.50/gallon the last time I filled up

$29.50 per week on gas for just commuting.

When we get to four times that, I suppose I'll start thinking about it.

Dude.  Best Buy?  Really?

Yeah, gellar. In my experience, they have the games on release day and have a bigger PC section than any of the EBGames stores that are near where I live.

Yeah but then they try to sell you a magazine subscription on your way out the door slywink

I miss my old EB near my old office in Marina del Rey.  The folks there were seriously very cool.  Some good things about them:

1)  I remember going to buy a PS2 game and they had only the opened "new" games in stock.  I generally don't have a problem with this.  So long as the game works and the packaging is nice, I don't give a rats as if it's open.  However this time, the manager said "Are you sure you don't want a used copy?  It's going to be the same, since we only have opened new ones left and you're saving yourself some money.  The used copy is in perfect condition."  Now I'm sure they made more on the deal since they sold a used copy vs a new one, but I thought it was cool of them to suggest it.  A true win-win.

2)  They *always* gave me the preorder tchotskis for games, even if I didn't preorder.  Very nice of them.

3)  They stopped asking me stupid questions.  After I became a regular, they never asked if I wanted to preorder something (unless it was relevant and actually a part of our conversation), to add the game "insurance", to ask me if I wanted to trade in any games, or any crap like that.  They knew my answers.

Of course I spent a lot of money there each month, but I liked giving them my money.  They were good people.

The Gamestop near my place now is so bad that I drive 20 mins out of my way to go to a different EB.  I still miss my old one though.

My best bidnez card story was when I started at my first startup back in 02.  We were so small, we got to put whatever we wanted on the cards (within reason).  I think I had about 5 or 6 different titles before it was all said and done.

However, the CFO did veto my request for "Grand Poobah."

They probably announced because if they didn't, as soon as it leaked (and it would leak), the press would go all apeshit about how MS is trying cover up "flawed" 360 plans and sneak in fixes.

I'm surprised this is even an announcement.  Consoles go through unannounced hardware revisions throughout their lifespan of production; that's why they have those model numbers encoded on the shell of the product in most cases, makes it quick for the company to identify what might be the problem with your particular unit if you call tech support.

There were several revisions of the PS2 that I know of prior to the new slim model that came out late in the system's lifespan.

I'm fairly certain there were PS2 announcements, they just weren't as well publicized.

All it says is 2007. If it is end of 2007 that would be a full 2 years after release. With newer technology, 2 years is like a lifetime in refining. They are just continuing to improve the system.. They had to release it at some point.

True but now (as we have seen from comments already) users know that if they wait they will get a better machine.

Sure eveyone does this to some degree but why hurt sales now for something which is at best 8 months away?  Why hurt your Christmass sales?

Cause the majority of the users won't care.  The games are the same.  Internals don't matter for crap for Joe User, so long as the system works.  Certainly there are some that will wait, but I'd wager to guess that number is rather insignificant in the grand scheme of things.

As has been mentioned before, this is not anything new.  Sony's PS2 changed a LOT over the first few years, particularly involving their DVD drivers, which were awful to start.  I remember having to load some software on a memory card just to get my DVD to work properly.

At least Lucky got a nice send off.

HUGE props to the Sharks and Sharks fans on that game.  Very classy for the Sharks to line up at the end to shake Luc's hand and the fans were chanting LUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUC just like it was Staples.  Makes me proud to be a Bay Area resident.

Kings cleaned house today.  Basically everyone but the trainer (Peter Demers FTW!) was fired.  Word is former SJ Shark GM Dean Lombardi is in line for the GM job.

Oh God....WHY?????  :?:   Why reward EA for their downright laziness?  The guys over on Madden Forums have had enough of their crap and I expect many of them to not buy '07.

NCAA?  Cause I don't have a copy for my 360 yet.  Cause it will still look better than the Xbox version.  Cause I want an updated roster and a few new features.  Cause quite honestly, the $60 doesn't mean that much to me.  Cause I want the right to complain from personal experience, rather than what I've read over the internet.

I buy nearly every sports title that interests me, every year they are out.  This "year" for example, I have purchased the following titles - off the top of my head, and in order of disappointment (most to least)

EA NHL 2006 (Xbox)
NHL 2K6 (360)
MLB 2K6 (360)
NCAA Football 2006 (Xbox)
Madden 2006 (360)
Madden 2006 (XBox)
Fight Night R3 (360)
NBA 2K6 (360)

Out of all of those games, really only NBA 2K6 and FN3 represent a significant leap of any sort over the previous years.  The other two 2K titles I own are barely discinernable from the previous years (other than a few bugs that are fixed, and a few more that are introduced).  EA NHL 2006 was actually quite good until you learned how to exploit the AI.  NCAA and Madden were both steps to a better product, ableit small ones.

My point is, my expectation for the next iterations of sports product are carefully measured.  If you take the above list, less than 20% are actual "significant" improvements in product.  The rest are roster updates, maybe some prettier graphics, and some bug fixes.  You know what though?  It's still fun for me.  I'm fine with that.  I'd prefer more, but I still get my money's worth.  I'm still likely buying the sequel to every product listed up there for the 2007 version.

I played a game last night and rather enjoyed it.  I think I am missing something with the pitching, as I threw probably 5 or 6 wild pitches.

Here is what I think will happen with Madden/NCAA this year:

PS2 and Xbox versions will be essentially the same as 06.

360 version will be PS2 /Xbox version with marginally better graphics but the same engine.

New “Next Gen” version in November for PS3 and 360. But it will have a limited feature set due to "delays in the PS3 dev kits."

I hope I’m wrong but I doubt it.

I'd bet on this too... especially since NCAA typically runs on the previous year's Madden engine.  I wouldn't expect it to look much better than Madden for the 360.

Sadly, I will still buy it.

Yeah... gonna have to disagree there.  While the hockey is often better than it's EA counterpart, it's still often riddled with bugs.

While EA doesn't do crap to innovate, at least they're consistently solid titles.  They don't have a lot of features, but the features they do have usually work.

what bonds and mcgwire et all and who knows how many did is forbidden by the rules of the game.  its the equivalent of counting it as a touchdown if a running backs a, b, and c run across the field instead of down it, and as out of bounds if everyone else does.

First of all, it's questionable on whether what they did was against the actual rules of the game.  Against the law, yes... but the rules against steroids during that time were rather... squishy at best.  Hence the new crackdown.

Secondly, the bolded point is the issue.  It's terribly easy to villify Bonds, but the fact is, so many other players were doing it we might as well erase any records set from 1990-2000, if we're going to go down that path.

8520  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Why does ESPN think I care about Barry Bonds? on: April 04, 2006, 05:51:07 AM
Now admittedly I'm a Giants fan (actually have tickets to opening day - yay!), but I think Caple makes some solid points in his article on ESPN today.  Assuming the book is true and we're going to asterisk Bonds' achievements, how do we do so compared to the past?  Where is the line drawn?  If the book is true and we don't... how is that keeping the integrity of the game?  Total Catch-22 here.

Quote
When it comes right down to it, are we really concerned about the statistic and only the statistic? If so, shouldn't we already understand that statistics mean nothing more or less than the context in which they were reached? That Cy Young won 511 games when the rules were different and the ball was dead? That Babe Ruth hit 714 home runs when blacks were banned from the game and pitchers hadn't developed sliders? That Roger Maris hit his 61 home runs in an expansion year? That Aaron hit his 755 home runs in a time when there was heavy amphetamine use? That McGwire broke Maris' record in an expansion year and in an era when ballparks and strike zones were shrinking while players were growing with better weight training and steroids? That today's players can surgically improve their vision to 20/10? That modern orthopedic medicine might have kept Mickey Mantle hitting home runs for another five years?

But if we are putting statistics into context, don't we have to know what the context is? Don't we have to know which players were cheating and which were obeying the rules? What's the point of even keeping statistics if we give the same credence to the numbers put up by steroid users as we do to those who played the game honestly?

Problem is, what is honesty?  Does it depend on when?  By what standards do we judge?

Too fuckin hard.
