8361  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Madden 07 360 Bug Thread on: August 17, 2006, 01:05:50 AM

My friend, I need to ask... is this surprising to you?.  I am not a fan of EA's football engine, but that is neither here nor there.  I would like to see them release a game where they do not drop the ball on something relatively major every year.  It comes off as shoddy.  And I think this would classify as "relatively major" to some folks.

The bright side is, when you think about it, other than running backs and receivers coming out of games due to being tired, it's probably really not THAT big a deal to the average player.

I am bummed for the Madden fans out there though.  Hopefully for your guys sake, EA didn't blunder a bunch of more stuff that hasn't been discovered yet.

Best of luck.

Yeah certainly not surprised... but disappointed.  I can't recall a major Madden bug that I've cared about over the past few years, so mostly things are ok.  I guess I *could* say the same about the fatigue bug, but that does matter more to me than most.  The one thing I could always count on Madden for would be that it would be considerably less broken than the competition.  I guess when there is no more competition, they don't have to be that good at it anymore.  Bastards.

And yes, I too worry about the shit that hasn't been found yet.  It's certainly dampered my hopes for the game.

8362  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Madden 07 360 Bug Thread on: August 17, 2006, 12:38:13 AM
Heh... lovely.  OpSports is reporting two fairly major bugs (one with a workaround, one without).

The first bug is regarding HoF players entering rosters and people starting Franchises with them.  Thankfully, this at least has a workaround and shouldn't affect folks too much (if at all)

http://forums.operationsports.com/vBulletin/showthread.php?t=179422

The second, which has no workaround, is that the players absolutely do not fatigue in the 360 version.  This is absolute shit, in my opinion.  I'm not certain it's bad enough to get me not to buy the game, but it's still totally unacceptable.  I'd like to think they can/will fix it in an update, but this is EA, and they suck at patching.

Ugh... for a guy who doesn't hate EA as much as the rest of you do, this is still a pisser.

8365  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / So when was the last time someone gave you something free? on: August 10, 2006, 05:22:24 PM
Restaurants I go to regularly.

I tip fairly well, so I frequently get appetizers, desserts, that sort of thing on the house.

The last time was this weekend.  A steakhouse Nancy and I go to once every quarter or so (it's a bit far from where we live) brought out an appetizer, two glasses of wine (to go with the appetizer), and gave us an extra item for dessert all without me ordering/asking for it.  Quite nice of them.

See I don't notice any of these issues, or rather, they aren't large ones.  The only one that bothers me a bit (other than the sack thing) is fumble recoveries, which is like an episode of Three Stooges playing out on a football field.  But then again, that's a lot like how real fumble recoveries are, so I don't mind so much.

No, but you get phantom sacks instead!  Also, I've seen LBs slide to make a play or knockdown/pick off a ball.

Yeah the phantom sacks are super annoying too.  Thankfully they don't happen that often and I don't have nearly the pocket presence to avoid someone who breaks free of a block anyway.  If it ain't a blitz and someone breaks free, I'm getting sacked regardless.

I just didn't like the implementation.  NFL2k5 was already very arcadey to start, and this made it more so to me.  The players moved a bit to quickly, cut to quickly, etc.  I'd personally rather see the stats dictate the game play more.

God... that just reminded me of my super #1 pet peeve with the NFL2kX gameplay.  The Superman tackle.  I swear to god some of those linebackers would actually FLY if you charged up and dove to tackle.  Like fly for 5 yards, break every law of physics, and make the tackle type flight.  SO ANNOYING.

The only part of that I will respond to is that Visual Concepts developed NFL, NBA, and CHoops.  While NHL and MLB were developed by Kush.  So that argument is not quite relevant.

That would certainly explain a lot.  I just lump then under the same umbrella as just about all of the 2KX games (other than the basketball ones, I believe) have had serious franchise bugs over the years.  I will definitely agree that NFL and NBA/NCAA are leagues ahead of NHL and MLB though.

I would argue that 2K5 really forces you to call the right plays and be good manually with your safety in order to play good defense.  Especially against human opponents.  Unlike EA football games where you can call quarters and let your CPU defenders make plays.

You call ANY play repeatedly against me in Madden and I will absolutely shred you.  I don't like football games that require "good stick" (god I hate that term).  I'd honestly rather just let my defense play for me assuming I made the right call.  I was praying NFL Head Coach would be better than it was... but instead it sucked.  Different strokes for different folks though.

Quote
I agree that the franchise mode in Madden (current gen) is much better than 2K5 was.  But considering how good the single player in NBA 2Kx and College Hoops has gotten over the last 2 years I think VC would have made great improvments to the football game by now in that area.

And seeing how absolutely bad and broken the franchise modes for NHL2KX and MLB2KX are, I'd have to disagree with you slywink.  The NFL2KX series always had a very substandard franchise mode, and instead of trying to fix their broken AI and logic, they added more crap on top that just broke it even further.  Very disappointing.

Quote
But nothing compares to playing in an online league with drafts and trades, with full injury tracking and rosters that carry over from season to season.  2K5 had that and EA STILL isn't even talking about that stuff yet for Madden.

Honestly, I never once did an online league as I doubt I'd ever be able to find more than 5 people who play a style of game I find enjoyable.  So while in those features sound quite awesome, and I don't deny that there were certainly many folks like yourself that loved them, they were totally lost on me.

The long ball looks like the way to go....just like previous Madden games.

Do we get the crappy radio commentators again?  I didn't hear any announcer during the gameplay video.

Yeah, just looks like another Madden release, just made prettier for the 360.

Dude... are you watching the same video I am?  This is a pretty significant step forward for Madden, at least in the graphics and animation category (which is all you can judge the video by).  Wow.

gellar

You can polish a turd, but it's still a turd.

I think that the game looks good.  Still, from what I can see, it's the same old gameplay.

Considering most sources out there are saying the game is vastly improved, I think calling it a turd, based off of a video short, is wrong.

I'm not saying you are one of these types of people, but the people, who are still hung up on the 2K football series, and still hold on to this hatred towards EA, need to just let.....it.....go. Before someone calls me an EA fanboy, let me say that I always enjoyed the 2K series for fun, especially online, but for season sim-like football, I personally have always enjoyed Madden.

I'll still wait to play the game, but after seeing bomb after bomb after bomb in a single video, it doesn't give me very much hope.  Yes, I did like the 2K series more than Madden, but those videos did little to prove to me that it's much improved.  I'm heavily skeptical, and I think that is good for someone in my position.

I think they showed bomb after bomb just because you know... slants and incomplete passes make for a pretty shitty highlight video slywink

And why should EA give a shit?

Does MS still support Windows 98?  Products get end of lifed.  I'm sure EA spent enough time and money determining whether or not the 50 or so people this adversely affected's loyalty was worth the thousands of dollars per year it was costing them to run the servers.  I'm relatively certain it was a sound financial decision.

Exactly. Come on fellas, really, why devote resources to March Madness 2005, when nobody is playing it? The terms of service EA has, that we all agree to when we sign up to play something online, or buy a game of theres, states that EA reserves the right to cancel online service for those games, at a time they choose.

This just isn't a big deal.

Great.  Now, as my Half Back places himself behind my offensive tackle and runs in place Mario-style, the HD animations will be most impressive.  Notice that in the trailer, they only show RBs going around the corner or off-tackle.  Nothing shown with a run stuffed at the line and a RB slipping through.

Gang tackling?  Player size/weight momentum?  A DB/WR passing system that actually makes sense?  RBs pushing through actual holes instead of juke animation running?

Bah.  I'll buy it of course... but I ain't gonna be happy about it.  Again.

Well said.

I dunno... NCAA does this pretty well, I think.  Every now and then my RB gets stuck, but it's quite rare and I tend to run the ball a lot.  After giving it a lot of time, I honestly think it's the best football game I've ever played.

I assume that they can share some of what they've done with the Madden folks, giving me great hopes for this year's Madden game to be quite amazing, really.
