Bill Harris has a pretty good post on his blog about some of the bad design decisions in the Superstar mode.

Yeah I found that to be pretty accurate... SS mode is cool in theory, and is fun if you play certain positions, but TOTALLY BALLS otherwise.

I actually like the depth chart... pretty easy to navigate.

Roster updates happen when you go online.  It's a standard thing for EA games... you connect to the online lobby and it prompts you to download a new roster.

Hit stick should be made *just* before you come in to hit a player.  It's a bit of risk/reward... you can lay a big hit, but it also makes you super succeptible to jukes.  I don't do it unless I have someone behind me to back me up.

8373  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: How about some GT Madden 07 impressions! on: August 23, 2006, 05:59:39 AM
Ok... so thoughts thus far.

1)  It's not as good as I was hoping it would be.
2)  It's not as bad as many of you were expecting it to be.

What it does well:
* Graphics are phenominal.  Better than NCAA by a few steps.
* Gameplay is a step better than NCAA.  If you don't like Madden/NCAA style gameplay though, this game will do nothing to change your mind.
* "Mario" running is pretty much gone.
* AI at All-Madden level is really rather good.
* Franchise trade AI seems good so far.

What it doesn't do well:
* As mentioned above, the presentation is absolute trash.  Worse than NCAA even (by a significant margin to boot)... and I thought that was pretty barebones.
* The fatigue, no matter WHAT the PR people say, is totally broken at this point.  It's not the UI for showing it that's the problem, it's just that it isn't in the fuckin game at all.  Weak EA, WEAK.
* Franchise has no major features in it, and the UI is pretty bad as well.  It's not that it's missing anything, it just hasn't really added anything great.  The salary cap figures are wrong once again, which is nothing new for Madden.
* The Superstar mode, for as cool as it could be, as some fatally bad flaws and terrible documentation.
* Documentation in general is godawful.  It's the same as NCAA.
* The playbooks haven't changed since... I believe 2001.
* The rosters are attrociously bad.  I mean, I get the whole idea of there being a roster freeze to get the game out, but HOLY CRAP are these out of date.  Might as well wait until official updated ones come out before you start a Franchise.

Final thoughts for the night - it's fun.  It's broken in a few aspects, but it's overall pretty damn fun.  I don't like it as much as NCAA though... yet.  Time will tell.

Yeah, it was pretty smooth.

The radio announcer...person was silent on the replay, if I recall correctly.

I never use the cover-ball button.  Maybe I should get used to using the right bumper more often biggrin

Oh, by the way, it's anybody's guess if a strip button is in the game or not.  EA's absolutely piss-poor shit instruction manuals continues.  You may read about jumping the snap (which I think is lame), but I'm not sure run / pass committing is in the manual.  Ugh, why must you cut corners on your manuals, EA?

It took me 5 minutes to figure out how to cycle positions in the depth chart menu.  I shit you not.

Strip is in the game. I am looking at the manual and it lists swat ball as being the "A" button. Covering up with the RB is absolutely essential in this game.

I thought swat ball meant lunge for it in the air rather than go for the pick?

So did I.

I can run on Madden.  I believe in the GG league a few years ago, I ran for half the game consecutively against someone to prove the fact that the running game is not broken.  It helped that he was running nickel and quarter defenses at me, but still... it's not impossible.  It just requires a very specific level of patience.

So, a serious question for people who acknowledge and strongly disapprove of EA's business practices: when you say you buy their games anyway because "I like the games" and then downplay EA's bad practices... is that justification because you want to purchase the games and thus support EA's continuing practices but don't like the implication that you are part of why EA gets away with these business practices?

Would you feel the same way if you or a family member were employed by EA?  Or if you or a family member were one of the developers whose dev house was picked up in a hostile takeover and gutted?

Because it's not like anyone HAS to work for EA.  If I had a family member working there, I'd call them a bloody idiot and move on with it.  Dev houses are taken over because they were not fit to survive on their own.

Hell, I quit working at MS because I hated their internal business practices, yet I still use Windows.  I recognize that just because it's bad for the individual doesn't mean it's bad for the corporate whole.

I hate EA the company.  They are total dicks.  I've had numerous friends chewed up and spit out by their sweatshop.

That being said, they are INCREDIBLY shrewd for a game company, so I have to admire them in some sense for honestly being the only publisher out there right now that seemingly has a clue about business.

I also don't let my hate for their work practices get in the way of enjoying their games.  They still make some fun stuff to play and my morals aren't that high to where I can just boycott it.  They don't do anything bad enough for me to hate them *that* much.

Quote from: Ralph-Wiggum on August 22, 2006, 03:12:10 PM

Most of those sound like bad A.I. rather than actual bugs.

I don't distinguish between the two.  It could be a monkey hitting me in the head while I'm playing for all I care, if it fuck's up my game experience, it's bad juju.

But there's a difference in having a game with some minor, but annoying bugs (like clipping, etc.) and game stopping/changing bugs (i.e. the NCAA PSP running bug or fatigue not working or Hall of Famers suddenly playing againt you). EA seems to have more of the latter type of bugs than most companies.

Uh... disagree.  2K easily had as many bugs as EA in it's final NFL edition.  The thing was, most of 2K's bugs were in Franchise mode, so most people didn't care.  Off the top of my head, things that were just flat out bad:

* Insaneo trading AI.  Way more (and often times unbelievable) trades than in the NFL.
* The whole pre-game prep stuff just flat out didn't work.  It contributed to a great deal of the problems.
* More injuries than are realistic.
* Godawful AI depth chart management (things like QBs returning kicks, etc...)
* Draft AI is... bad.  In the first round, the AI EXCLUSIVELY drafted QB, HB, T, and DEs only.  Nothing else.  Period.  This was an absolute Franchise killer.
* Off season AI in general was garbage.  Teams didn't seem to sign players for any specific reasons and many good players wouldn't be signed at all.

You know what's sad?  I'm trying to figure out the last actual major Football game (EA or otherweise) that *wasn't* buggy.  And I can't.

Basketball as a franchise is typically pretty solid, from both EA and 2K.  Hockey is a total trainwreck most of the time, particularly the 2K versions.  Though, the EA versions aren't so much buggy as they are just flat out bad.  Baseball... Sony does a nice job.  EA's last effort was ok.  2K last year was a total piece of shit.

I guess sports games are just hard to make?
