I dunno... I can't live without the TiVo interface.  Unless Comcast has improved it in the year or so since I moved from LA, it was leaps and bounds behind the TiVo interface.  I'm willing to pay a one time premium to get it.

The unique thing about the box is that it is a CableCard device. You need to get one or two CableCards from the cable company. To enable dual tuners, you need TWO CableCards. Inserting one will only enable a single tuner.

Shit.  I'm not sure if that's available in my area.

Uh, the superior Tivo interface. icon_biggrin

That's enough for me.  The Comcast HD DVR is so bad that I don't even use the thing.  The Series 3 makes my pants tight.

What did 360 launch with in the US?
According to Bill Harris, 1.5 million.

Ah, no.  No idea where he got that number from.  It *might* be worldwide by the end of 2005 but I doubt even that.  NPD data had the 360 at approx 330k during November so that tells you what North America had for launch.  Japan had under 100k and don't know what Europe got by it was less than the US.  So you've got less than 1 million shipped day one worldwide for the 360.

Yeah the 1.5 mil figure is a total joke.  I don't know where he got that number from.

Also of note is that the original XBox, touted as a DVD Player, wouldn't even play DVDs until you bought the extra remote thingamajiggie for it.  The PS2 would pay DVDs (poorly) and you needed to buy the remote just to get the software upgrade that fixed the shitty DVD playback.

Again, gaming consoles have done this for years.  If they save even $0.05 on a process, they absolutely will do it because it will help them in the long run.

Dude, we just showed you a site where a 3 foot cable is what, 5 bucks? It would cost Sony under a dollar per unit I am sure.

Again, the difference is that a lot of people are buying the PS3 for the BR potential of it and Sony is using this as their vehicle to really push the product. Why not do all you can, as a company, to make sure that out of the box it will do what is needed to show off their BR technology.

I'm not pissed about it, just flabbergasted at how you guys are willing to pay 600 dollars for something that we think is incomplete.

$1 per unit, assuming they sell... say 1 mil units is... $1,000,000.  Not a small chunk of change to save if they can.

And again, it's no more incomplete than not having an optical cable.  Or even worse, it doesn't even have a GAME.  How can they sell a gaming system WITHOUT A BLOODY GAME?  THE OUTRAGE.  How the hell can they show off the system's gaming capabilities without a game to play on it?!?!  Oh wait, they've been doing that for years.

Again, you have to buy the $600.00 box to get the Blu-Ray playback capabilities, yet they are excluding from you the very means to be able to take advantage of that, out of the box. It's like you buying a car but having to purchase a steering wheel to be able to drive it.

I still don't see how this is any different than the 5.1 sound issue.

In the end, it's an extra $10 - $20 I have to spend for a cable... when the entire damn thing costs $600, it's WAY LOW on my piss-off-o-meter.

* gellar actually doesn't have to buy a new cable, he has one plugged in to his DVD player already.

None of the consoles come with optical cables either, so this shouldn't at all be surprising.    Sony surely doesn't want to pay for a cable in every console box that a very small percentage up front will even use.  Expect it to come with the standard component cables in the upper version.  (PS2, Xbox and 360 didn't come with optical cables either...  i fail to see how this is some horror show that PS3 doesn't come with its high end cables)

What he said.

* gellar still needs to find a place that will let him preorder a PS3.

Again, it is hypocritical of them to an extent to make you pay top dollar for simply the OPTION of BR playback in HD, yet not include the means to take advantage of that. We've already proven that cost cannot be an issue, and that HDMI is nearly universally sold on all new HDTV's (and included on any decent HDTV made in the last year or two), so it's only going to have more market prescence as more and more HDTV's are sold.

I think you guys are underestimating just how many sets are out there with HDMI inputs that potentially could be plugged up to PS3's.

No... I actually have an HDMI set that will be used by a PS3 slywink.  I'm certain I'm not underestimating it.

5.1 audio has been a standard for what... nearly 10 years now and it's not a cable included with systems?  Hell, the original XBox required you to buy an entirely new cable just for the priviledge of being able to use an optical cable, regardless of whether you needed the other cable or not.  (That's right, two cables for 5.1 sound. WOO!)

Let's face it, companies LIKE dicking us around for cables.  Sony doing this is not anything new.  In fact, I was shocked when MS included the component cable with the premium system and would definitely consider that to be more the exception than the norm.

* gellar has lots of cables.

I read somewhere in my search that the MS one will be $150 and come with a force feedback version of PGR3. I  don't understand why we would need a new version of the game though. Does this mean other older racing titles won't have FF? Will Test Drive have FF?

Most likely... for racing games, FF requires seperate programing than just the rumble that the controller can do.  GT4 on the PS2, for example, has superb FF.

* gellar would likely wait for the MS one, as no game really has touted FF so far.
