That's more of a jab against the Chiefs, but yeah, I think everyone had that expression.

GoHawks.  Great day to sit back and watch a game.  The Real SB XLVIII, round 2.  Fight!

This is the game I've been looking forward to all year. Partly because it'll be the first time I'm having Thanksgiving Dinner in a parking lot, but mostly because I expect these two teams to beat the shit out of each other.

For a while it looked like the 49ers would get rolled over (which is still a distinct possibility), but both teams are struggling quite a lot on offense right now. I'd be shocked if either team topped 20 pts. Can't wait to watch it.

COD AW now that I think about it. What a turd.

That's my disappointment as well. A few weeks after launch and MP is still so laggy that its entirely unplayable for me.

Forza Horizon 2 is my surprise. I thought I was bored/done with racing games but I played a ton of that one.

I think its FIFA 15 for me... in retrospect there really hasn't been a lot that captured my attention this year. Maybe I'm getting over gaming.

I'll be at MetLife for this one. Which of course means the 49ers are going to lose the vastly inferior team.

Actually for the maps/game mode complaints, I'd suggest playing Momentum. It's really fun and I think would resolve your issues.

It does not, however, resolve the epically bad lag.

I played with several GTers for a couple hours last night and it was, by far, the best lag experience I've had (ie there was almost none).

What's your NAT setting?

Wide open.

The first two games I played were 100% lag free and it was actually really fun. However since then, it's been godawful. It's pretty clear there's a massive issue based on what I've seen on Reddit, etc...

I'm not even bothering booting this one up until a patch is out to fix it. It's incredibly bad.

I actually went in thinking the TV integration was the stupidest thing ever. I decided to hook up my Tivo just to see how it worked but expected to unhook it. Now it might actually be my favorite part of the console.

The things I like:
1. "Xbox on" turns on my tv and receiver (if it could choose a specific receiver input it would be perfect)
2. Can use voice commands to issue pause/fast forward to Tivo
3. Can use One Guide to control Tivo (although One Guide usability could use some work, or I could use some practice)

I will occasionally snap tv, but not for extended periods of time. Nice for when you are waiting for something to download, perhaps.

So yeah, I really like it, but if you are not using the kinect then it loses a lot of the value.

The Kinect just doesn't work well enough for me to use it. It's super spotty. Maybe I need to recalibrate it but it is pretty awful at hearing my voice.

So I'm moving in a few weeks and will have the opportunity to run my DirecTV box through the Xbone... I'm trying to decide if I want to do this or not.

Does anyone actually use the TV features and find them valuable? Keep in mind the two things I know it can do, I find zero value in: Watching TV while playing a game, Using voice commands to do anything. Is there anything else? I assume the smart guide will be useless to me given that I won't use the voice commands to use it, but maybe I'm wrong there.

Anyway, open to comments. I have a few weeks to decide.

Because that costs money that Activision are apparently unwilling to spend.

I don't use sleep mode. Ever.

You're losing out on some of the more handy features of the PS4, then. Mine downloads patches whenever it feels like it, and I routinely purchase new games from my web browser (often while at work, since that's when the store updates), which makes the PS4 turn itself on and make sure they're downloaded by the time I get home. It also allows my Vita to turn on and off the PS4 if I decide to use Remote Play.

Ditto. I pretty much *only* use sleep mode on my PS4. It's only ever fully powered down if I am moving it.

Though the fail did get me to buy Horizon 2, which is excellent so I guess I've got that working for me.

"Consumer Reports test results find iPhone 6 and 6 Plus not as bendy as believed"

I'm shocked!
Because they, like Apple, tested it at the very MIDDLE of the phone...and not the massive weak point at the volume button.

Take a look/read - quite informative IMHO as to why the phone breaks down as it does.

Also, BTW, between the three latest iPhones, the force in pounds needed to bend the phones in the middle:

5 - 130
6 - 90
6+ - 70

Yeah I get the phone is bigger but ouch.

Still don't see the big deal. Thin metal and glass to make a light weight device? It's going to be weak to a degree, but why would you ever put your phone in a position where this could happen? If you are that rough with you phones, buy a plastic one that can hold up better (and is cheaper to replace).

Dropping it and shattering the glass is far easier to do, as well as more likely. Bending it ranks about 10th in the  likely ways I could damage my phone. This whole thing is way overblown because it brings page hits. I went to Bloomberg yesterday and their leading story was this (over everything in the news world). Web sites are trying to cash in on 10m+ phones being sold, so they are creating controversy. Just like the OS X shellshock bug, non issue for the majority of users, but it was listed right below Bend-gate on Bloomberg.

Honestly the conditions you'd need to put it in in order to break it sound pretty fucking uncomfortable in the first place. That's what's dissuading me - the likelihood it will not feel good in my pants. The bending is a far secondary concern.

The 6- was comfortable in-pocket and in-hand, except for one handed use.  Browsing through some web pages and some system menus, it was immediately apparent that my thumb could no longer reach everywhere on the screen like it can on my 4s.

So I'm left a bit torn between getting the 5s or the 6- this fall.  I guess I'll likely get the 6- and just get used to the different handling.

Something that I thought was a bug but turned out to be a feature is that a double tap (not press) of the home button pulls the page down so you can get to something out of reach.

That's the one hand mode

Does that exist in both the 6 and 6+?

Port the number to Google Voice.  It is a one time fee of $20 but then you have the phone number as a google voice number for you forever.  So every time you get a new phone you can just tell google voice to ring that number.

Things I love

1. it can ring multiple phones.  So we have my wife's number and mine ring then we give that number to the school, doctor's office, etc.  If one of the kids is sick the school only has to call one number and whichever one of us can answer does.

2. if neither of us can answer it goes to voice mail.  The nice part though is that the voice mail is transcribed and sent to you gmail account, and also sent as a text!  My old office as in a basement with no cell reception and it was great to just see an email come in with the voice mail.  Then I could call back on the land line phone.  Or I would see the text when I got somewhere with reception.

Worth noting that Google Voice #s don't do MMS, which is why I no longer use my Google Voice #.
109  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Let's talk Iphone on: September 12, 2014, 03:08:46 PM
Definitely port the #. If you're like me, a ton of your internet apps use your phone as a backup security channel if they think your account has been compromised.

And when I signed up it was pretty easy - the $30 plan just showed up as an option (actually highlighted as the suggested option). It did note it was only available for new signups, but that shouldn't be an issue for you.

Get off the contracts! Contracts are the devil! Go to T-Mobile! Tongue
64 GB iPhone 6+:
AT&T - $399
T-Mobile - $849

So not signing a 2-year contract to get the device subsidized, when I've used all my previous devices for three years, will cost me an extra $450 dollars?  I think I'll pass.  Tongue

I pay $30 a month plus tax on T-Mobile for my iPhone 5 (web only plan of 100 minutes, 'unlimited' data, unlimited text, full LTE support). A similar plan would be $80, easily (and it was that -after- discounts on Sprint, the last plan I was on). So you save $50 a month.

Over the usual 2 year contract (24 months), you've saved $1200...assuming you don't break the phone (this plan does not allow insurance) or do something like upgrade in a year (although you'd still save money in the long run).

EDIT: Yes, I realize that I run my phone under a very 'specialized' plan, but it has saved me so much money already. And it'll keep doing so, too.

Yeah I have that plan on my test Android phone for work. It's pretty awesome. It would never work for my primary phone as I need unlimited talk minutes, but if I didn't use my primary phone for work purposes I'd absolutely switch to that plan as well. I believe it also comes with WiFi calling.
111  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Let's talk Iphone on: September 11, 2014, 04:40:19 AM
It was absolutely an iCloud flaw. Specifically two iCloud flaws:

1) Apple did not do any sort of rate limiting, failed attempt lock out, or any other security best practices on login attempts on iCloud backups, so they could be brute forced and/or dictionary attacked.

2) 2FA would not have helped as it was not enabled on iCloud backups and photos (and still is not).

#1 is fixed now and Apple says they will do everything in their power to solve #2 as soon as possible, but its not a trivial task.

Here's the difference, I think, between this and the iPhone/iPad.

Instead of a product that is greatly improving on an existing product that a lot of people already own or have some familiarity with, you have a product that is only slightly improving on an existing product that almost nobody owns or has any familiarity with.

I could be wrong. The details are so vague on how this thing actually works that it's hard to really assess what improvements it brings over existing smart watches. However, without it being able to have some major functionality without being tied to another device, I still see it as having limited appeal. The iPhone and iPad allowed you to replace multiple other devices. This one doesn't.

I was a massive iPhone skeptic when it first come out until I actually played with one in person. I'm wondering if Apple has that magic again.

I do agree though - nothing they've shown me so far makes me say YEP GOTTA HAVE THAT.

On the other hand, the lower end (sub $500 watch) business is a fairly large one and its possible that Apple disrupts the fuck out of that. Will be interesting.

Now, there are people at Microsoft who I think really care passionately about their gaming division and want it to be great. But they're small cogs in a big corporate machine.

Yeah, this has generally been Microsoft's problem as a whole for a long time. It's not just the Xbox division that struggles with these symptoms. Luckily, with the recent changes to the company, things might (or might not) change. This was one of the things that had given Microsoft quite a bit of positivity recently, the fact that they reorganized both Microsoft and the Xbox division and at least made an effort to look like they cared (an effort that I think is at least somewhat honest).

To be fair that's not a MSFT specific problem. Many large companies have that issue. Incumbent's Dilemma. It's why we have start ups.

The issue with gaming is that you aren't going to see a startup game console because the barriers to entry are too high. So we have two incumbents who are trying to out iterate each other rather than take big steps.

(This does, however, bring up another point which is - how much did MS really expect Tomb Raider to boost sales when they're going to have plenty of opportunity to do so with other exclusives such as Halo 5 around that time frame? Are they just trying to stack the bench?)

Fair question. I suspect they've been trying to buy exclusives for the next few years and Tomb Raider was one of the few that were receptive. If your options are low, you take what you can get even if the timing isn't ideal. It's still a talking point.
