We should do a GT NFL Team power rankings.  Ranking the Crap of the Crop of the NFL.

49ers
Buffalo
Dallas

I don't even know which of them is the best.

Buffalo by far.

By far?

Have you watched even ten minutes of the other two disasters?

I'd like to declare that 10/2 will be Taken War Friday. I've put the call out on OctopusOverlords. We're going to take the war to the Taken, which means doing Taken War: <blah> quests, Court of Oryx, and even Taken war story for those of us who haven't finished the main story mission yet. Let's shoot for 8:30pm EST again and see who shows up. We'll need to split up if odd numbers show up since everything except the raid and Crucible only allows a max of 3 people in the fireteam.

Taken War: <blah> quests are pretty quick to finish and definitely go faster with a fireteam.
Court of Oryx is a blast, is a good source of engrams, and also goes pretty quickly with a fireteam.
And Taken war story missions are always a good chance for those of us with alts to take them and help our fellow guardians who are doing the Taken story for the first time.

See you there.

I'm in. Will be there on the early side and hopefully will be 40 by then.

Fun game to start the season.

It's somewhat liberating to have literally zero positive expectations of your favorite team. No stress, just laughter.

It's like the Ericson days all over again Tongue

Or Nolan. I guess I had some level of hope for Singletary for that one fully year.

I had zero hope for Harbaugh's first year (and was wrong), so that was the most recent time I had this feeling.

Ya I had hopes for Ericson, and you were right to tell me how wrong I was on that one Tongue  Nolan was an idiot.  I did have hope for singletary, but he turned on not know what to do.  Harbaugh I bought in on day one, and I still think it was a horrible move to dump him over ego.  Quickly they forget how it was.  Well, they're about to be reminded. (no offense to our newest coach)

Yeah I knew Harbaugh would be good, I just assumed he was going to struggle in his first year, especially because a) there was the lockout that prevented any summer coaching and b) he had Alex Smith as his starting QB.

I was very wrong. It was a glorious year.

And now we're here.

Just like at Qt3, it amazes me how little all the people on these forums don't like the social aspect of games.

I would say outside of RPGs, Assassins Creed+clones, or Uncharted+clones, the majority of my gaming time is spent competitively online. It's probably 90% of my time. I like playing MP in the sense that humans are better competition than AI, but I have zero interest in interacting with anyone I shoot/shoots at me or scores/scores on me. Basically I treat online MP as games with really good AI.

Some lines that amused be and are pretty accurate:

Destruction 97%: "They enjoy games with lots of guns and explosives. They gravitate towards titles like Call of Duty and Battlefield. And if they accidentally find themselves in games like The Sims, they are the ones who figure out innovative ways to get their Sims killed." SURE DO

Challenge 3%: "These gamers play at the highest difficulty settings and donít mind failing missions repeatedly in games like Dark Souls because they know itís the only way theyíll master the game. They want gameplay that constantly challenges them." SURE DON'T

Completion 1%: "For gamers who score high on Customization, this may mean collecting costumes and mounts in games like World of Warcraft." SOUNDS TERRIBLE

Community 2%: "For them, games are an integral part of maintaining their social network." NOPEDOTCOM

And yeah I wasn't a huge CODAW fan either. I liked/played it more than Ghosts, but thats not saying anything really given that I hated Ghosts.

Played maybe a half hour of the beta last night and enjoyed it. Games were pretty lag free. Time to kill was VERY fast though, so not sure if its going to be to anyone's liking who was hoping for different.

I much prefer this movement to the Exo movement of CODAW since people aren't just jumping to the top of the screen when you start shooting them. I am also terrible at wall running. If I wall run, I die. I think 1/3 of my deaths last night were environmental.

Its also weird to go back to Treyarch spawns (which are relatively static) after a few years of the crazy dynamic spawns of the other two COD developers. I think its better, but its going to take some getting used to.

Overall, I had fun. Happy with that.

so in this future world where everyone has super high reflexes, nobody can react to being under fire?  you're grasping here.

If you can actually run up a wall or slide in response to taking fire and not die doing so, lemme know.  I doubt it since every previous COD you are dead no matter what you do barring luck/lag.  I'd be fine with having the ability to boost up in the air to avoid fire too, or turn invisible and dart away, all things we don't do in real life.  The point was that there is nothing you can do in COD once you know you are tkaing fire before you die.  Even when you have a ballistic shield in COD, you can't even raise it before you die due to the ttk vs lag.

Man, who pissed in your cheerios?

The point is they designed this game for the soldiers to constantly be in motion, so it makes more sense to run up a wall or slide through a doorway when faced with fire then to stop and hit the ground. You can also float in the air and thrust in a direction to avoid fire.
nobody pissed in my anything, it just seems like you aren't even reading what I post that's all.  I never said anything about stopping or hitting hte ground.  I was talking about being able to react to coming under fire.  You'll also notice that in the video you posted not one person being shot at survives long enough to go up a wall, jump away, or break line of sight.  Even with this super high mobility, it's irrelevant.  See first, shoot, dead.

I'm pretty sure that's normal for COD (or at least all of the ones I've played since Black Ops 2). It seems they tune to shoot first and win (so long as you can hold aim).

I actually like that, but I can certainly understand why some don't.

Niners traded Andy Lee

Man the Niners are really going to need a good punter this season, maybe Andy wanted out of the upcoming train wreck of a season?

Actually the smartest move the 49ers have made all off-season. Got a good, young leg in the draft and got something of actual (though minimal) value for an old (but great) punter on a pretty expensive contract.

I mean it doesn't matter since they're going to suck, but Lee's leg wasn't going to hold out with as many punts as he was going to have to do.

38mm Sport model got delivered yesterday. I've been wearing it since. Holy fuck is it comfortable. Definitely more comfortable than any of the other watches I wear. I'm also super impressed with the rubber strap - its much nicer than any of the other rubber straps I own for my other watches (three), the least of which cost north of $50 so the quality is impressive given this thing was $350 total. Definitely a nicer rubber strap than you'd get with another $350 watch. The clasp is kind of finicky (I'm not used to this type of buckle) but I love the way the loose end tucks under. Really nice.

So far I'm pretty addicted to checking how my heart rate is doing, mostly because it shows me in better shape than I thought I was in.

Hey Siri works infinitely better than any other iteration of Siri for me... which was a surprise. I was actually able to dictate a couple of text messages with zero issues which has almost never happened with my iPhone.

I don't really love any of the faces... I guess I want something more in line with a mechanical watch and all of them have something about them I don't like. I've settled on Color for now but its still kinda meh.

Apps are hit or miss thus far. Some work great and make sense and others are DOONNNTCAAAARREEE. The coolest is Shazam.

My biggest complaint is that its not very Apple-y in the sense that there's no way I'd want my mom or girlfriend to have one of these. They'd be confused by everything other than telling time. I always thought that's the thing the Apple did well - it made sense to the non tech/non gadget people. This feels more Android-y than Apple-y, and thats not a good thing. But its also not shocking... This is a new form factor and a new way of interacting with technology. Apple probably still has to figure out whats intuitive and what isn't.

Happy I have one.

I am guessing you know, but just in case, the watch faces are really customizable as far as what data is displayed or even some of the UI elements.  Again I'm sure you know, but just throwing it out there.  Also, why 38?  I find even the 42 to be very small.

Yeah I've played with them all don't love any of them. I actually think that the analog ones annoy me less now. I guess there's just something artificial about the analog ones for me.

And I went with the 38 for two reasons:
1) I want this thing to be unobtrusive. I fundamentally find these watches to be ugly relative to a 'real' watch so I'm really just wearing it for function. Basically if I am not in a t-shirt, I'm going to be switching out for another of my other watches so for this use case, I wanted utilitarian and unobtrusive.
2) It was $50 cheaper.

The only time I wish it were bigger is if I am interacting with it, which isn't a lot to be honest. I think the 38 blends with the bracelet nicely and almost makes it look like an activity tracker, which is the look I want.

Actually, I would have been upset initially, but yes it would have.  Because a) I might have not placed that order and ordered an alternate model, b) for certain I wouldn't have spent the week before the release date anxiously checking my order status, and c) I definitely wouldn't be wasting my time arguing with people who already got their watches lol!  Let's face it it's always easier to apologize for Apple when you are on the "other side of the fence."  Hell I was doing it myself last week when I got my Macbook on time, so I probably just jinxed myself.

I was having a really tough time hitting and was striking out 10+ times per game and couldn't figure out why. I couldn't get my Dynamic Difficulty above Rookie which was insulting because I was an All-Star level hitter last year. Then I read that turning off Guess Pitch helps because while guessing correctly is a huge boost, it also hampers your ability to make good contact when you swing at a pitch you didn't guess correctly. I didn't know that, I thought it just gave you a boost and had no negative side effects otherwise.

So I turned off the Guess Pitch feature and just started looking for pitches in certain locations myself, using directional hitting to help square up a pitch in hitters counts. And in the last three games I've got 10+ hits and scored 6+ runs and improved my hitting difficulty from Rookie to Veteran, and am already making progress towards the next step up.  I should hit my sweet spot for difficulty soon.

Dynamic Difficulty is still the best feature that anyone has ever incorporated into a sports video game, by the way.

Caveat: I haven't played this years.

The right thing to do with guess pitch is to only swing if you get it right (or the pitcher hangs something). So I only guessed pitch on the first pitch (because I'm taking the first pitch UNLESS I take a hack if I nail location and speed) and times when I am up in the count and I am willing to take the pitch if I am wrong. Basically play it like real batting smile

Otherwise yeah, the negative impact is bad.

I'm still in limbo, this is definitely the worst pre-order experience I've ever had with Apple.  Following the threads, it looks like they are fairly (I guess) moving in order of when orders were received, and mine was only confirmed 7 minutes after midnight.  Unbelievable that their stock could be this poorly planned out for "launch."  Seems like they should have known well in advance exactly how many units they had and then partition the ship dates with more intelligent windows based on order time, rather than lead all million+ pre-orders to believe they would be received on the original release date.

It's not even that I can't wait to get the watch to use, it's more just irritation that a minute or two of hesitation caused days/weeks of delay.  Lame!

To be fair, I preordered 5 mins after launch and it was readily made clear that mine wouldn't arrive until mid/late May.

Also in regards to the essential thing - I'm paraphrasing someone smarter on Twitter: When your products goal is to find a way to get relatively well off people to spend more money, essential is not at all a requirement.

So despite being unconvinced that I'll wear one in situations outside of where I want the fitness tracking features (and occasional daily wear as a part of my watch rotation), I'm going to be online at 12:01am PST tomorrow night to preorder the least expensive one. I'm interested in how it works and the price point isn't too terrible. At the very least it'll be a nice fitness tracker that I don't have to wear alongside a watch (which doesn't work well).

I'll report back when I get it.
