Yeah, I get where you are coming from.  smile

I've read the book twice, and it seemed a lot worse the 2nd time.

So, for me, I think a lot of the fun came from the remembrance of things I had mostly forgotten, which is
why I'd call it a good summer/beach read.

I thought RPO was a fun read...but I also grew up in the 80's.

I consider it to be the geek equivalent of a summer beach read.

Also picked up armada, and it has yet to really grab me.

Just finished the game on PC.  An excellent experience through and through.  Final tally was 98% completion, 261 deaths and a total play time of 6 hours 40 minutes.

I just finished last night.  Took me about 14 hours, and 1200 deaths.

Pretty much left me feeling old, inadequate, and thinking I should give up gaming.
4  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Who is your cell provider? on: March 20, 2015, 02:48:25 PM
I have sprint, and am in Chicago.  It's ok, coverage is excellent, (only carrier that gets service in my basement at work), but speeds suck.

I did the tmobile 7 day iphone trial not to long ago, and every time I tested it was at least 4x the sprint speeds I was getting.

I almost switched, especially since tmobile is cheaper, but their building penetration is very poor.

They are cheating and duping.  Has something to do with them allowing imported saves.

The main reason to only play with people you know on console.

Yeah, that gem cost sure ramps up!

I was in the habit of just hitting the gem person and combining all my gems.  All of a sudden, it told me I didn't have enough gold.
I had started with two million, so I couldn't believe it...until i saw the higher end gem combines are 300k+

Almost bought it during the sale, but just couldn't pull the trigger.

Sorry to continue the off track destiny comments...

More than anything, my good friend and I like to play coop.  We're past the competitive age, don't like playing with strangers, pvp, or anything like that.   So, we really enjoyed having a nice coop fps to play together.

10  Non-Gaming / Steals and Deals / Re: Best Buy Gamers Club Unlocked $30 (normally $120) 20% All Games for 2 Years on: October 30, 2014, 08:00:55 PM
Have around 4 games for xbox one on media.  Have another 6-8 digital only.

I finally realized the other day when my $10 copy of tomb raider showed up that I am
actually willing to pay MORE for digital copies now.

Yeah, I know it costs me money, and no resale, blah blah blah.

But less clutter and less swapping is worth it to me.

If you like to micromanage, you can also leave instant on on and reset your router/modem each time you resume, but that's more work than waiting a few more seconds on launch.

I timed mine once.  Was ~8 secs to resume from instant on, and over a minute from energy saving mode.

quite a difference, was hoping to leave it off as the fans in the power supply annoy me in quiet room
12  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Hardwood floors and dogs. Any suggestions? on: September 30, 2014, 05:29:31 PM
I have hardwood floors, 2 golden retrievers, and 2 cats.

It is hair central!  I vacuum multiple times per day, and you can still find hair everyplace.

I have come up with zero solutions, cept getting animals that don't shed.  smile

I've actually thought about putting down carpet, as i worry about my guys slipping around on the hardwood.
13  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Should I get a cat? on: August 01, 2014, 02:22:30 PM
no, you shouldn't get a cat.  you should get TWO cats.  smile

cats aren't overly expensive...unless you run into medical problems, in which case they can be.

the love and companionship is more than worth it though.

Always took a complete uninstall and reinstall.   Quite annoying.

Now on windows 8.1, so far so good.

One of my all time favorites.

As Lordnine said, its not like they gave the first one the royal treatment.  They did the bare minimum, and there were so many issues.

Will probably wait for a $10 sale

19  Non-Gaming / Forum and Site Feedback / university blocking gamingtrend on: April 02, 2014, 03:36:16 PM
gamingtrend stopped working at my university a few weeks ago.  I thought the site was just down.
Finally got around to pulling it up at home, and find that it IS up.

I inquired with our fine ITS security folk, and it ends up that gamingtrend is being blocked as a botnet.
I figure if it's happening at my school, I'm sure it's getting blocked other places.

The exact response I got was:

"Made it on to our reputation list for being part of a botnet…with a pretty high score at that.
Their IP’s showed up on EmergingThreats and SANS"

Not sure what, if anything, admins can do to get the site off those lists, but just wanted to let someone know this was happening.

20  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Amazon Prime price hike coming? on: March 17, 2014, 02:35:02 AM
Any way I cut it....time, hassle, gas, prime always wins.   Given that items are usually cheaper than they are locally, and no's a no brainer.

Also considering the unofficial "share it with four friends", it's really like $25 a year each.

I don't use the video streaming or book lending at all.

Puppies sure can be a lot of work!

Leave her in the crate, she'll be fine.  Really!

We as humans are really great about making ourselves feel guilty, aren't we?  smile

Perhaps set up a webcam so you can check on her during the day?  I did that with my dogs, and they pretty much just sleep 98% of the time.

Perhaps find some neighbors who would be interested in doggie play dates?

My way of dealing with the guilt was to get a 2nd dog.  I feel better knowing they are together.

Wow, I can't believe it made that much money, or that it's getting a sequel.

I guess there are those that will see him in anything and those that like action movies with a big star.

Everyone I know who actually has read the books was very disappointed with the choice for lead, though more
than a few of them went to go see the movie.
25  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Jack Reacher is coming to the big screen. on: February 04, 2014, 04:08:51 PM
As a huge fan of the books, I pretty much decided that dwayne johnson (the rock)
would have been a perfect jack reacher.

I think he could have led it to being a series of movies, instead of one and done like tom cruise.

I tried 3 times to make it through AC3, but never did.  The game just didn't click with me.

I am loving AC4 though.  It has been a nice variety of ship/land, keeping it interesting.
And hey, who doesn't love pirates?  Used some of my uplay points to buy the pirate costume, making it even better!  smile

I downloaded the AC4 app on to my nexus tablet last night, and thought that was kind of cool, and handy.

Try the powerline stuff on different outlets perhaps.

I had some video streaming issues, downloaded and installed the powerline utility, and it will show you real time speed between
your two units.

I was getting about 8mbps.  Moved the one connected to my router to a different outlet, went up to 110mbps.

Problem gone.  smile

I looked in to this last year, and at that point it had all ready seemed like the ship had sailed
for regular joes to do some mining on their home pcs.

Do a google image search for bitcoin mining, and check out some of the rigs people have setup.  It's crazy.
35  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: So i have just cancelled Xbox Live Gold(After 8 Years) on: April 08, 2013, 05:03:03 PM
The best feature is how most of their features just allow you to make a connection to another service
that you all ready pay for.  Hello hulu plus, netflix, etc

Now if Gold included access to all that stuff without having to pay yet again, it would have some value.  To me.  smile

36  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: iOS v Android on: February 23, 2013, 12:34:12 AM
I had an ipad 1 and an asus transformer, and I used the transformer a ton more than I ever used the ipad.
Mostly because all of the information I wished to consume at a glance I placed as widgets on one page, and wouldn't
even have to open any apps.  On the ipad i'd have to go through 5-6 different apps to get all that information.

My best friend has the latest gen Ipad, and it's certainly nice, feels snappy, runs everything well.  Wish I knew someone with a nexus 10 I could play with, so I could compare them.

I have an android phone and I've played with my friends iphones.  At this point in the game, for what I use them for, they're about the same.
I'm overly sick of the android vs ios debates, and tend to shy away from them.

I have a galaxy S3 these days, and it's a very nice phone.  It is bigger than I wish it was, though being winter, it hasn't bothered me much, because my winter coat has a nice big pocket perfect for a cell phone.  Come summer, and shorts, I may feel a bit differently.  Picked up a friends iphone 5 the other day, and it was so much smaller in my hand, it felt like a toy.  But in another way, it actually felt kind of good.

Really, feeling old, wishing a phone was still just a phone.  I miss my a900 flip phone!  smile

The thing about apple, in my eyes, that if you are going to go need to go all in.  macbook, ipad, iphone.

I'm tempted...sometimes smile

I live in Chicago, so I've currently don't have anything.   Waiting to see how everything plays out here before I make a decision.
Spent time in the USMC, have fired a ton of different weapons, and am looking forward to someday arming myself.

Does anyone have any recommended gun forums that they browse?  Just looking for more focused conversation smile

I'm a fan of the dell inspiron 14z.

Really, since you aren't gaming, any modern laptop is going to serve your needs just fine.  So, it all comes down to how much you want to spend.

Are dells the best laptops ever?  No, but they are certainly good enough, and are on the cheaper side of things.

Always dell coupons and deals floating around as well.

Dell outlet also gets some good deals, and different coupons offers also.  Currently have 25% off a bunch of laptop models.
