Also, does anyone know if they have updated the TOA mnaual with current info for the expansion. I guess the manual that was recently initial on Tuesday was old one with just the new title but no info on the new game saywhat But, I thought I read somewhere on the official board that the manual has been updated with the new current info. Does anyone know if the correct manual is now with the game download or is it some other place to be downloaded?

I don't know Dan from Adam so I will take your word on that and all I can say it is what it is. Though I am happy to see the course the game has taken and will be pre-ordering it this year.

With the current beta version of Twilight, my current installation is about 1.6 gigs.

I would tend to agree with you that this new expansion pack renders the two previous iterations obsolete.  I positively *loved* GalCiv2 when it was originally released, but today it would seem really limiting to go back and play without the mineable asteroid fields, the epic random events, or the unique technology trees.  Twilight really is like an all-new game.

But does offering such ambitious and sweeping improvements really qualify as "fleecing folks"?  Gas Powered Games released an expansion pack for Supreme Commander which added *one* new faction and improved some lackluster graphics and severe AI deficiencies with the original game, except they sold it as a stand-alone product and marked it at $40.  That's great for newcomers who never bought the original game, but people like me feel pretty suckered for shelling out an extra $50 to play a beta version of the "real" game.

Stardock has offered dramatic gameplay improvements for GalCiv2 several times over the last two years, with smarter AI and better graphics, except they've been in the form of free patches.  The Dark Alliance expansion pack offered a unique race and a new campaign, but also completely reworked several core principles of the game to include mineable asteroid fields, planets that required specific techs to colonize, unique super abilities for each race, and huge game-changing random events.  Many other companies would have called that "Galactic Civilizations III" and sold it for $50, but Stardock kept it at an expansion-pack price of $30.

It's true that playing Twilight will cost you about $60 if you don't own the first two iterations of the game.  That's $10-$20 more than most new PC games and about the same price as the average new console game, and even if you never touch the original GalCiv2 or DA pack, I think that's a small premium to pay to get a superb strategy game that receives such a fantastic level of post-release support.

I highly recommend it.

Actually, I agree that the "fleecing folks" is an inaccurate description and also admit Stardock is a good company in the industry that I want to support. I still think 60 is a bit much but on a positive note I found out that I had purchased GC 2 way back when and forgot about it. Which means I just have to buy the $45 expansions combo:)
12  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Gal Civ II: Twilight of the Arnor - Beta Updates on: April 08, 2008, 02:53:15 AM
Thanks and that sucks for anyone who hasn't got the first two since 60 bucks for a game is alot. This isn't really an expansion but a new game iteration. Do be honest I hate to say it but Stardock is fleecing folks who don't have the first two. I don't see many people throw 60 down on three games when the thid game Twilight makes the previous two obsolete. This is really to bad since I was looking forward to gaming with this new game. I also wonder how big the harddrive footprint this one will be requiring folks to load all three games. icon_cry

I just got the game and have it fully patched to 1.05 and have graphics problem. When I start up the game part of the game screens are cut off Is there a way to adjust the game screen resolution in the game or something like that. I don't have this problem with any other games so this is kind of weird?

Is the MLS league from the US in the game?
17  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Blitz: The League on: August 15, 2005, 07:41:08 PM
blitz the league  will be 8 on 8 and from what I have read it will consist of a 15-16 hour story mode and sounds somewhat linear in nature. Other than that it will have an online component and that's all. It doesn't sound like there will be any drafting freeagency stuff jsut one season.

22  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / LotR: Battle for Middle Earth - First Impressions on: December 17, 2004, 03:46:44 PM
I got it and it is fun but not what I was hoping for as far as unit AI.One thing that is promising A EA spokesman made this post over at the Middle Earth fan site. It does sound like they will support this game, lsiten to the feedback form fans and hey will make a exapansion. We got to remember Pete Jackson is connected to this project and I would bet he's not gonna let EA fuck his license reputation.

Some of you have been asking about post product support for B4ME, especially given the notes that we are thinking of an expansion pack and working on RA3.

Rather than get into arguments and debates about how much support there has been on Red Alert 2 or Generals and then whether people will be happy with support for B4ME, I thought I would give a bit of the bigger picture going forward.

The key thing to note is that we're going to have a dedicated team for B4ME going forward. This differs from our past process of having a our one team jump from product to product(i.e. Red Alert 2, Yuri's, Generals, Zero Hour, B4ME). The very nature of having this team means that the landscape for support and development of B4ME games has changed from how things have worked in the past.

Next thing, is that we are going to support the product (and already have) because we know it's important and it's the right thing to do.

Because the product has been out for about a day, it's too early to outline all of the things we have planned and instead I suggest to everyone that they just watch and participate in the support going, giving feedback about things you appreciate as well as things you don't appreciate.

For those of you who are skeptics or like to post negative comments about everything(especially those posting from guest accounts), you should watch and keep a record of the things we've done and then post those with your comments and conclusions. You guys can do a great service to the community by helping to ensure that everyone is exactly aware of what's really happening or not.

Hope this helps explain the bigger picture for everyone.

Basically, the time for words and debates support has past. Instead, we'll let our actions speak for themselves.

Have fun,

(I am Tim Frederick btw) Well, I must say I am sad to learn what (might) have happened to GoneGold.  I have been very confused and sad the past couple weeks about it, and thankfully someone from a GG fantasy football league pointed me here.

Well, I have been going to gonegold since at least 2000, and posting actively for the past few years.  I remember reading the roll calls every night, and even copying a couple of the more touching ones regarding Rich's past in the NYPD, or more uplifting stories of his gaming extravaganzas and his excitement with new releases or running contests, etc.  I can't believe that it is over.

Even after Rich became too sick to contribute, Bill swooped in with his stories of Eli 2.0 and his story contests.  When everyone was worried about the costs of running gonegold we donated money to the cause, only to find out that we had managed to buy enough games through gogamer and such, and clicked enough links that the site was actually economically viable on its own.  Bill, Andy, and the mods did a wonderful job keeping it running during this whole time period.

The past year has been a rough one at GG, with people getting booted off, the large mod turnover, and fights over the direction of gonegold.  I know Rich had been disappointed with that, but things had gotten a lot better since then.  That is what is so dissapointing about this, it seems like while we had a rough time, the past few months have been flawless with less fighting (thanks to the quarantine of R&P, hehe) and with the site becoming more of a community again.

How am I to know what to get without the gonegold effect?  Never again will I have the silliness of roll call or night call?  Sigh...  I will try to visit CG some, but it simply is not going to feel the same for me.  The past couple years I started visiting more often, as where I inititally only came to discuss games, I moved into political discussions, everything but gaming, trading games, etc.  It was nice to have a site where people happily donated time to help with someone's math homework, or helped with personal problems, relationships, job searches, etc.  Even people who would fight in some forums would drop everything to answer a post asking for help in life.

In gonegold we have witnessed weddings, the birth of one another's children, MsDuncan's wife, deaths, GGers on TV, getting post-graduate degrees, and almost anything else you can imagine.  Where else will so many programmers and designers from the industry occasionally come to argue and pimp their games for us?  I never thought a website would have given me so many memories and experiences.

So Rich, Andy, Bill, Stephen, and the mods, thanks for everything these past couple years.  I hope somehow GG will come back, but if not, we really did appreciate you all these years.  If there is anything we can do, let us know.

Greta post and if you still want to read Bill's stuff he's got a great blog that continue's the Eli 2.0 stuff
