Warframe is a lot of fun the PC, so PS4 should be as well.  Several people who play it on PC use controllers to do so.

Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood isn't bad and is on Netflix.

Crunchyroll does have a lot of good stuff like Attack on Titan,  Hunter x Hunter, Gurren Lagann etc and my current favorite anime Kill la Kill.

Blacklight is pretty good on PC.  Think sci-fi CoD multiplayer.  Even had mechs you can call in.

I've watched a lot of gameplay videos and I think it looks fun. <shrug> I like the Arkham series/Assassin's Creed style combat though with the blocking and the stabbing and whatnot. I really think the critics have been overly harsh on this one thanks to the QTE outrage and mostly just because hating Xbox seems to be the fashionable thing to do. That may actually work in its favor - with expectations so low, it may surprise people.

I'm hoping it will do well, I still have my pre-order in for it.  I don't think either new console has a game of this type for launch and I liked the God of War style of game (not saying this is going to be as good as GoW, just similar in some aspects).

I think Knack shares more in common with GoW than this from a combat mechanics point of view at least.

Is it ironic that they mention they are playing at 720p?  They do say they like the look of it.

Ohh edited to add they do mention it can do 1080p as well.

Giantbomb will be capturing all games at 720p for now, regardless of whether they support 1080p or not.   Has to do with their player, bitrates, etc.

So I used my BOGO code from Amazon and I opted for the two sports titles (Madden and NBA2K).

Madden is scheduled to ship tomorrow.   NBA2k which didn't indicate any kind of problems, now shows shipping Dec 24th???    What the heck?
pretty sure they use that and 1/1/2014 as placeholder dates when their system doesn't have it.

Thought it was a launch title though?   Am I wrong about that?

It is a launch game.  May have sold out of first shipments though.

The difference between 720p and 1080p on the other hand is quite dramatic, and anyone would be able to spot that.

For a person with 20/20 vision to discern the difference between native 720p and native 1080p on a 50 inch screen, they have to be sitting closer than 10 feet.

Pretty sure a lot these numbers came about when looking at video and not games.  As I noted, with video you are downsampling a super high res source, it's not the same thing as rendering something natively from scratch.

For a real-world example, would it be apt to compare the way an over-the-air HD broadcast looks compared to a blu-ray movie?

Not really, movies don't really compare to games in that movies are all downscaled (well excluding really crappy CGI stuff) from extremely high res sources.

Yeah I got the code too... I really can't decide what to use it on. If I thought Madden would be any good that'd be a no brainer but I expect it to largely be awful. NBA2K14 is pretty, but basketball doesn't interest me much... so it's between Killzone (and I already have Ghosts on PS4 and BF4 on PC) or NFS Rivals. Not sold on either.

Why are people thinking Madden will be bad?    I haven't seen any next gen reviews for it?
EA has been phoning in their sports games for a while.  Especially Madden where they have no competition.

Ok I went with AC4 and NFS:Rivals.  Already getting Killzone, and didn't need another FPS right away.  Felt a strong pull from Knack though,  and it was tough to choose between that and Rivals, but I figure Killzone, AC4, and Rivals gives me a nice spread of games at launch and I can grab Knack later if it's decent, as well as add it to the xmas list.

That should serve to cool things off.

Things were cool until you flamed me. While things may be cool again tomorrow, how long will that last? How long until another insult comes out of nowhere, starting it all over again?

This stupid "war" of ours isn't going anywhere until you're able to confront yourself with this. It doesn't matter if I said "The Xbox One is a steaming pile of shit", which I didn't for the record. Any time you respond to an opinion or an argument with an insult, any resulting heat is your fault. I could reach out my (virtual) hand and say "I apologize", but I really don't know what I'm supposed to apologize for. Spreading news? I can do that as much as I want, thank you. Being unbalanced in my opinion? That is my right, as long as I don't insult others over it. Insulting you? I would apologize in a heartbeat if I did that, but any insults I've come up with to you have been in response to insults you've tossed against me.

You want things to cool down? Then do something other than walk out the door and hope things cool down on their own. That's not what's wrong here.

I think I will opt to not even respond to this.

Too late, you just did.

Who's the real fanboy - the guy getting both consoles, or the guy getting only the PS4 and who points out the Xbox's flaws at every opportunity?

From the posts, it's pretty clearly the guy getting both consoles, you wouldn't think that normally but there it is in abundant evidence in writing.  Weird eh?

As pointed out in Soulchilde's video, they had to start somewhere with TV integration. Once it's in a lot of homes and customers start to demand features, it's much easier to get content providers on board. I have no doubt we'll eventually see better DVR integration, but Rome wasn't built in a day.
The problem is they really need to ship with a cable tuner card in the box, the XB1 should be capable of being your cable box.  Now we may see support of that in the future but it's going to require all new hardware, in which case the early adopters will need to upgrade.

Yeah but that would lock you in to specific cable companies which is definitely not a good thing...  particularly for satellite, fiber, etc providers.  I think the hardware situation is actually decent given the amount of variation that's out there.  The question is how to get the software integration going.

For instance, one thing I don't get: given that they have control over the IR blaster, it seems like the Xbone should be able to generate any command that the remote normally does, which would include on/off, volume, etc.  And for that matter why wouldn't you be able to access the DVR functionality in the same way?  If Logitech can get their remotes to do stuff like that, certainly Microsoft can get the Xbone to do the same?  The only difference seems like using verbal commands or movements to substitute for specific button presses, which they clearly can do.

Probably because it'd be hilariously clunky.

Xbox List
Xbox down
Xbox down
Xbox down
Xbox Enter
Xbox Enter

Yeah I'd rather press the buttons.

Yeah but we know it has speech recognition as well, so really just List is enough, maybe having access to Enter would be useful.

So I'm thinking:

Xbox List - brings up the full list of my recorded shows
Xbox Watch XXX - starts the show (of course this gets tricky with multiple episodes in a folder...)

edit: and also don't forget about using hand motions, etc to move the cursor around like they show in the one video.  So maybe you make a scroll down gesture to move down, and then a "stop" gesture for enter.  The point being this is all clearly very doable already through software.  All they would need is some way to allow user customization of assigning a specific motion or verbal command to a DVR command, similar to the way Logitech lets you custom program buttons to commands.

The Xbox has no way of knowing what the show is on your DVR, you select shows on a DVR by a visual list.  Whatever the XB1 would be doing, it would be replicating button prompts.  The reason you can do voice control for live TV shows is that it has the TV guide built in for your provider.

Which reminds it sounded like not all cable providers would be supported.  I wonder if mine is, as my cable company is my town.  Hypothetical really as I'm not planning on getting an XB1 any time soon.

I haven't had time to watch the videos, may I ask what is meant by "no DVR"?  Does this mean the Xbone itself will not be recording shows or does it mean it won't let me use any of the functionality of my DVR cable box?

If it's the latter, that's going to kill the usefulness of this for me by a huge amount.
It has no DVR functionality for TV nor can it control your DVR.  You can use a DVR through it, but you will need to use all your old remotes etc, even if it's the DVR built into your cable box.

I'm really happy that the Xbone previews are going so well. I've seen a massive reduction in overall internet hate towards Xbone this week. Even the resolutiongate issues are starting to lose steam.

If you're looking for an Xbone champion, take a look at the stuff Ben Kuchera has been saying on twitter and on PA Report.  He's been excited about both consoles and active in discounting how much he thinks the Xbone negatives are going to actually matter.

The games media on the whole has been dismissive of the resolution differences, even though months ago they'd been making a big deal out of a mere 80p difference between PS3 and 360 games.  Cinemablend did an article or two on it. There's been a pretty huge backlash against games media, and unfortunately for Adam Sessler he's been made the focus for a fair bit of it.

Details on the PS4/PC accounts.  Not ideal, but still not terrible.  Basically a one time copy of your PC account, then they will diverge after that, as they are separate accounts.  They will eventually support crossplatform play as well.

Quote
Warframers - here is a quick update on PS4 progress as we're screaming toward deadlines and certification!

Account Migration/Duality:

Iím afraid it's mixed news here. Account duality is dead (update timing has killed this, explanation below). Meaning your PC account cannot be shared back and forth between the PC and PS4.

HOWEVER, we have worked out an alternate solution: a one-time account migration option that will copy over your current progress to PS4. This PS4 cloned account will have everything you currently have except for Platinum (contractual) and Clan Dojo/Membership (technical). You will find this one-time migration option in the Account Management area of the website when PS4 launches in your territory.

Your PC account is unaffected by this migration and both will then progress independently... arguably this solution is a better way for players that want to try out PS4 but want to keep their foot in the door on Warframe PC with uninterrupted updates of the latest and greatest.

Cross-platform Play:
Currently cross platform play is a go but likely not for Day 1, expect this sometime during launch window. The two platforms will cross-play only when build versions are in sync (see below).

Reasoning:
Why is duality dead? Why cross-platform play isn't always enabled? It comes down to update frequency.

We don't have guarantees yet on when PS4 updates will come out which means they may drift out of sync by several days from PC. If you get a cool new weapon on PC and PS4 does not have it yet, stuff breaks. We could hold PC back, but we didn't think that was fair. Even then, coordinating with multiple console region QA departments adds too many unknowns to bank on this.

I hope this makes sense! I appreciate your understanding, I'm looking forward to seeing some of you Warframers on PS4 next month!

Basically Purge is right, and it's a good catch before hooking up my PS4 next week.  The TV I have does have 5.1 out, but for whatever reason it drops the HDMI in to 2.1 before it will pass it out (I think.)  The fact that the built in Amazon and Netflix apps do output in 5.1 pretty much led to me thinking all the output was 5.1, and I just haven't used the 360/PS3 on it enough to notice it wasn't 5.1 out.  But doing some research seems to imply that the audio passthrough is converted.

You actually don`t WANT the HDMI going to the TV set.

HDMI is a simple point-to-point negotiation, and almost no sets whatsoever offer Dolby Digital OUT from the TV.

Your receiver is `upscaling`your audio experience - the device to TV negotiates a 2.1 sound, then the output goes to your receiver which is then taking the 2.1 and creating ghost 5.1-7.1.

Device to receiver is best.  Tongue

Well consider me lucky then because my TV has a 5.1 optical out.  Though further reading you may be right, and the 5.1 out may only be for SMRT TV stuff like the Amazon and Netflix apps, I'll have to research it now, and maybe a recabling is in order...

Is he playing on two screens at once? Awesome? I didn't notice any lag at all.

Forgive my ignorance but why would you ever do that? Or is the video mainly just to show that there isn't lag and most people will play far away from their tv? On that note, does the PS4 need to be on for remote play?

That workout program for the Xbox1 looks great. I don't think I would ever use it, but I'm sure that'll be a big draw for a lot of people.

Remote play seems like a really nice feature for certain people, where they will be able to play their PS4 games while their significant other and/or kids watch TV.  I saw people excited about the Wii U tablet for the same reason.
