None of you guys played The Last of Us?

I've avoided it because I have absolutely zero interest in anything having to do with zombies.  Seriously...enough already.

I'm sure I'll check it out on a clearance sale sometime, but I'm not in any hurry to do so.

I think you missed out then, because 1: It's not your typical zombie game/movie/story.  2: The presentation and how the story is told is quite remarkable.

I've heard that a few times, but every gameplay video I watch just screams "YOU WILL HATE THIS".  I haven't particularly been a fan of previous ND games, so I'm not sure why one in a setting that is 100% sure to annoy me would be different.

I think it's their best work, and I thought Uncharted 3 was a flat out bad game.  At least 50% of the game is dealing with bandits, and those encounters play out a lot like Tomb Raider's encounters which you had as your GOTY, so maybe you really should give it a look.

Some of us like discussing the industry and unfortunately it's becoming increasingly clear that GT is not a forum that can handle those types of discussions as there are too many console warriors who take it personally.  If you can only ever talk about positive news for one console or people freak out, it's just not going to be conducive to any interesting conversations that could be had.

Nintendo is doing better right now, but 200,000 Marios sold? That isn`t great news.

Nintendo is cratering in sales. They push barely more than 200k consoles in one of the 2 busiest months of the year. Nintendo is gonna have to have a reckoning about their future after the Holidays.
3ds is doing well, the WiiU is a bit of a disaster.  I'm a bit surprised how well they are hanging on in the handheld market with the rise of mobile and tablets.

Dear ForgeForsaken,

You do realize that by the VERY NATURE OF THE PRICE DIFFERENCE, if MS are not more  than 19.9999% in sales behind Sony, their gross earnings will be higher, as marginal as that may be in terms of profit. (500 vs 400 - how's THAT for math!). SCIENCE!

I just assumed you weren't using the term correctly and were talking about physical console sales, as to do so would be unlike you  Tongue

But I believe it edges it out still.  Rumored PS4 numbers put it 228k ahead of XB1.

Man I had some weird math there I think, but the results remain effectively the same with the PS4 outgrossing the XB1.

I didn't get a Tomb Raider vibe, but I figured LoU must be a slow burner.  the part I saw was in town up to the escort part, just after the predictable loss at the beginning.

Both games offer a similar mix of gunplay/stealth and how you want to approach situations.  Tomb Raider has more climby bits, though both have a fair amount of exploration.  The bow is the best weapon in both games  ninja2

Roughly...

The Swapper Amazing atmosphere, great puzzles and an ending that sticks with you.
Call of Juarez: Gunslinger.  The best arcade corridor FPS in years.  Fun inventive narrative too.
Last of Us.  Fantastic story telling and an excellent blend of stealth to gunfights gameplay

Saints Row 4.  Just stupid fun, full of amazing geek culture references.
Tomb Raider.  A great reboot, and like Last of Us a nice blend of stealth/gunfighting.
AC4.  Getting the series back on track, and Caribbean is just a great environment.
Super House of Dead Ninjas. The best of the retro platformers.  Fast and tight gameplay with great sound effects.

US != NA.

Look it up - you'll find it an atlas. The statement is that in the US alone they were able to sell x units in y time.

The location is not variable, and Mr Hyrb messed up in a tweet. Multiple other sources, including the news.xbox.com also reaffirm this is the case - the stat is US market only. Also, we don't see this kind of derision on every Sony statement, so there is that.

Try saying this: "I was wrong." It's  liberating.

Spin isn't lying, they're simply making their position an enviable one. Sony is doing the same thing. They have been out a week longer, MS has made more in gross sales. Hawkers will hawk, man.

This morning, Nintendo released a press statement about how Wii U sales went up 340% from October.

Now, how about those moose?

MS did not have more in gross sales.  Sony outsold them by about 200k (or more).  This is what TiLt is getting at and apparently you bought the spin hook line and sinker.  To break it down, both Sony and MS did the bulk of their sales on launch weekend.  MS sales probably actually break out into two chunks, 700k launch weekend, and 200k Black Friday as that's when they probably held resupply for for November.  Sony hardly resupplied at all in Nov it seems, likely in prep for Euro launch on the 29th.  Neither console was doing per day sales,  but if you play with averages, you can make it seem like MS sold more per day since they weren't out as long in November.  If Sony launched the same day as MS, Sony without selling any more consoles, is now selling more consoles per day on average than MS.  It's a completely bogus stat that MS is providing not based on any real sales data that they are generating just so they can say "FIRST!" in something.  It's silly and belittles there accomplishment of selling 900k consoles at launch, which I believe is the 2nd biggest console launch in history, 2nd to the PS4.  Both these things are off to a roaring start.

I actually expect MS to take Dec, as they are focusing heavily here with resupply, and rumors of tier2s being further delayed seem to back that up.  Sony is spreading themselves more thin globably and is launching in several Asiapac countries in Dec so they will be allocating stock there.  So MS will probably outstock Sony in NA in Dec.
659  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: 2920 Days until launch. Which system are you getting? on: December 13, 2013, 02:00:37 PM
This is just more inept MS PR, though clever in a microcosm.  900k is a fantastic launch.  These people need to stop treating their product like a sporting event,  you don't have to sell more to also be successful.  Be proud of your number,  you don't need to bend over backwards to make it more than some other guy who is also selling well... So silly.  It's like the playstation family nonsense Sony started doing last gen.

Anyhoo,  the company in a tough spot is Nintendo.   WiiU is trending around Dreamcast sales levels.  Also third party software on it pretty much dead, and even Mario barely moved  over 200k units.

Damnit Sony, get your network security shit together.

That's what they're doing. Have you heard about anyone actually getting hacked this time? They're being safe rather than sorry.

Seriously?

Seriously.

You know that thing you're doing right now? Yes, that thing. Stop. Just stop.

This response is as cute as it is predictable.   I know you take your "Defender of Sony!" role seriously, but you can't honestly say that Sony hasn't had some serious big-time security problems in the recent past.   The news releases cite suspicious activity and thus many many people were prompted to change their passwords (including me).

I can't remember the last time I had this problem with just about any service I use be it Blizzard, Steam Microsoft, etc.   I can, however remember going through credit card statements when Sony was storing our passwords on a dinner napkin just a couple years ago.    Sony needs to get their network security shit together, pure and simple.

Now go happily play Knack instead of coming up with cutesy arrogant responses to legitimate concerns.

You don't remember a bunch of your friends on 360 disappearing for months at a time while MS dealt with their accounts being hacked?  I sure do. And nevermind consoles, do you not have a Linkedin account?  They were the most recent big hack, or was that Adobe, or even gmail.  There's been several times some big site has been hacked now.   This doesn't excuse Sony, but please, don't act like this problem is just something they face.

So then there are two problems: one is that Ms needs to tweak their upscaler.

Two is that the devs who are using it should be selective about which features they count on.

not sure how ubi let that through QA as is.  maybe they can spend the effort next time around and make a better upscaler.  or, better yet, get performance up to 1080p without sacrificing details.  are there any other multi-plat games that use the native upscaler?

It's not just an UBI issue.  Killer Instinct which is an MS published exclusive has the issue as well.  Pretty much anything that isn't native 1080p or Ryse exhibits it.  People have found that if they force the XB1 to only output 720P, then they don't have the filter applied.  They've even found a way to get it to disable briefly on the XB1 doing weird stuff with snap etc, but it's only for a few seconds, but it has allowed people to generate screenshots with and without the filter applied.

I'm still way short on metal.  I have more than enough everything else though.  The issue is Kenway's upgrades are not well spaced, basically you can get the best guns/swords easily early, and then his next worthwhile outfit is story gated for a long long time.  Then the jackdaw upgrades require a bit too much grind IMO, and a bit of luck of the spawn system.  The worst seems to be that lately I find one ship with a 100 Metal surrounded by 4 other ships carrying rum and sugar, so I have to fight 5 ships for that one haul and that's discouraging.

ok, let's clear this up.  AC4 look worse on XB1 than it does on either PC or PS4.  no arguing will change this.  does this show a weakness in the platform or the developer?  unknown, we haven't played AC5 yet.  if the next one comes out and is still noticeably worse to look at on XB1 compared, then we can make a better assessment of a system's strength/weakness.  agreed?

That wasn't even the point though, if you read my original post you see it's specifically about the sharpening filter, with a side of gee, isn't the WiiU sad.
I noted that comparisons are a tired topic, but that shot and the article specifically highlighted an XB1 quirk.  Yes it's 900p XB1 v 1080p PS4, but I  was  commenting on the odd choice to pretty much globally apply a sharpening filter to all upscaling. I mean look at what I said "Jeebus Microsoft lose that sharpening filter! "

From the Eurogamer article
Quote
As we've seen in other sub-1080p games upscaled by the Xbox One hardware, overall image quality is further impacted by the introduction of an unwanted sharpening filter

This seems more of a MS need to disable or make that an option at the system level, as opposed to a hardware power issue or a developers learning the system issue.   Ryse gets around the issue by handling the scaling internally to the game, and not letting the XB1 do it.
