who is the almighty word dictator in your world?

Folks who aren't racist and think it's funny to insult others based on their color, religion or sexual preference?

according to you

I want to deem the word hepcat to be offensive and therefore removed here. by your logic, would you go along with it?

and no one is laughing at Indians. They're enjoying the hell out of rooting for their beloved Indian-named team! LOL

Again, he goes to the straw man.  How about you actually address the actual issue.  The word isn't being banned by the government, the government is refusing to protect the exclusive monetization of the word.

The BET Channel is racist, and offends me. There is no WET Channel, so why are the rules different?

Is there a bigoted slur or profanity in the name BET? If so, you could complain that it should not be granted a trademark. Otherwise, the comparison falls flat.

There is no White Entertainment Channel......or any other race-only-in-name channel that i'm aware of. Why is a minority allowed to break their own moral-rule?

Just the fact that there is no WET Channel proves that therwe should be no BET, if we're gonna play by the PC-crowd, racism rules.

Straw men upon straw men.  We are talking specifically about a slur here, not a race only name.  Basically change the Fighting Irish to the Fighting Micks or Taigs and you'd have a somewhat fair comparison.

Scraper, you're feelings on this issue are conservative-based. So not only do I agree with pretty much everything you've said in this thread so far, it has to include "damn liberals are trying to force change on us again"

So with the ganging-up on me, the minority on this forum, here already, I want to know when is the majority going to step in and defend me? My feelings are getting hurt. Where is the compassion????????

 icon_razz

I thought a hands off approach on government regulations was a conservative principle.  All we are talking about here is the deregulation of the usage of Redskins as applied to sports teams.  Shouldn't you be in favor?

Deregulated? Umm, no.....that would mean they can use whatever name they please.

The way it should be.

But they can.  No one is making them change the name, the government is just saying they will no longer help them in instances where other parties name their teams the Redskins, or produce Redskin jerseys etc.  The government is saying, hey, you are on your own if you want to go with that.

Really, people that are upset about the trademark rejection are in fact arguing for government involvement.

Cognitive dissonance kicking in yet Zekester?

Pretty sure that's always been the way though, you can't trademark obscenity or vulgarity.  The issue is what falls into those buckets does change over time and with society.

The biggest problem I have with it is that we have a branch of the government deciding what is and isn't "offensive" based on speech. If you guys so clearly want to believe in the free market then why can't the USPTO sit back and watch the trademark wither away because the American people don't buy the products it's associated with? As it stands the people and our free market justify its existence. Sad but true.

Is the name offensive? Sure it is. But why should the government tell us what is and what isn't offensive when it comes to trademarks attached to a product?

The government didn't just decide this on their own, a group of Native Americans brought suit against the trademark, and while our government is a majority rule, it is also tasked with the protection of the minority.   Here's Thomas Jefferson on it

Quote
All, too, will bear in mind this sacred principle, that though the will of the majority is in all cases to prevail, that will, to be rightful, must be reasonable; that the minority possess their equal rights, which equal laws must protect, and to violate which would be oppression.

If you're a conservative I don't see why you have a problem with this ruling, they aren't forcing anyone to change the name they are just making Redskin's merchandise into a free market.  If the team and the NFL want to compete they'll just need to make the highest quality jerseys at the best price.  Fair competition. Or are you folks in favor of government interference on markets now?

you folks?

i'm offended by that.
good thing I'm not trying to trademark it then

Of course we need to bring about 60 High Schools that have the Redskins name under the thumb of the McLiberalism Junta as well.

Refusing to bow to political correctness are the communists of this age.

If you can't see the difference between calling a Blackhawk tribal member a Blackhawk versus a Redskin you're better off not bringing attention to that.

That's actually named after a WW1 army division's nickname that itself was named after a chief not a tribe.

During World War I, McLaughlin had served as a commander in the 333rd Machine Gun Battalion of the 86th Division of the U.S. Army. Members of his division called themselves Black Hawks in honor of the Sauk Indian chief who sided with the British in the War of 1812. Surely, the Major felt, it would be a fitting name for the newest entry into the National Hockey League.

I will say the Alpha was amazingly polished and things ran well.  Granted the alpha player base will have been much smaller than release

I'm intentionally avoiding everything about this game.

Is it an MMO or what?

Sort of.  The server populates with randoms, so you will run across other players as you play. It might be doing something clever like changing servers on you as you go through inside areas between open sections.  There's a central town hub where you'll see a lot of randoms, as well as all the shops.  Mission selection is done from orbit in your space ship, and in the alpha you could select a story mission, a 3 man strike mission, or an open explore mode where you take on random quests from beacons throughout the map.  There was also a selectable PvP mode.  There's a full loot system, along with leveling up your character and skill trees, individual loot items can level up and be upgraded as well, often with their own min skill trees.  When in explore mode there are also area group events that spawn from time to time, like an enemy drop ship bringing in a spider tank, or a crashed ship that needs to be defended through several waves of attacks etc.

There's a rumor that the #Destiny Alpha might be extended to allow dangerous experiments. Play beyond the official close at your own risk!

Is the risk just in losing character data? The way they're wording it, you would think the hardware was at risk...

I think they are testing server loads, so you may experience disconnects and other server load related issues.
337  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: [TV] Game of Thrones - Season 4 is coming (please mark spoilers) on: June 16, 2014, 06:55:39 PM
Some of the big differences
Spoiler for Hiden:
Coldhands completely removed from show.  Brienne does not fight the Hound. Varys does not leave with Tyrion.  Jojen doesn't die outside.   In the show Tyrion doesn't find out what actually happened with his first wife Tysha and the infamous "wherever whores go" line was cut.  Also no Lady Stoneheart but they may hold that for the season opener, though I'm thinking she's going to suffer the same fate as Coldhands.

If someone just wants to play single player, can they still take advantage of the building falling down technology without having to subscribe to Live?
More to the point what happens with no internet connection.  Some of the XB1's early always on requirements make more sense that way

I don't know about ten years, but I like it a lot.  It's very much haloXborderlands but also with a bit of MMO in it.  What I mean by that is you run across a lot of random players, especially when you are doing the explore mode.  Melee combat also feel really good and I'm enjoying stabbing guys with my Hunter and punching them with my Titan.

Activision is really starting to notice how they've got almost no IPs to offer. A press conference by them would end up being nothing but Blizzard and Call of Duty, so I think they'd rather just save themselves the embarrassment. Their core customers don't care about E3 anyway.
Eh, the got Destiny, and don't forget Skylanders.

If it is pull your hair out hard, like I understand Dark Souls is, I'll pass.

No it's a new IP from the Demon's Souls team.  Dark Souls was an evolution off of Demon's Souls, this sounds like the next evolution.

from Famitsu (via neogaf)

- Spring 2015 release window
- They started work on this right after finishing Artorias of the Abyss, targeting Sony's new hardware
- The world and story is completely new, and the setting takes full advantage of the PS4's capabilities
- They're targeting 30fps at 1080p
- The keywords for the game is "blood" and "beast"
- There will be melee and long range weapons (guns) this time
- Character customization is confirmed
- There will be no map display in the game
- He wants combat to not just focus on action but also the strategic element
- The combat in the game is designed to feel like a life or death struggle
- There will be online elements of some sort, and it will involve players "discovering" together

Activision hasn't done one in a long time.  Konami used to do one but stopped a few years back.  Deep Silver, Namco, Capcom, Square Enix, and Sega also don't have them.

It's the last "conference" but there may be smaller reveals during the week.  Consider how many publishers don't have conferences, and how limited time on stage is for Sony,MS, and Nintendo.  So unless it's big or exclusive a few games could easily not show up in any of those conferences.
