281  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: [Kickstarter]Robotech Academy on: July 07, 2014, 03:31:03 PM
The downside, as I understand it, is that Harmony Gold is preventing any of the real Macross sequels (of which there were several in Japan) from coming out to the US.  Macross, I believe, is the only one of the series to get proper sequels to the original Japanese show as well.

One interesting thing from the originals is that Genesis Climber MOSPEADA (Invid Invasion) released before Super Dimension Southern Cross and wasn't part of the Super Dimension series.  The Super Dimension shows consisted of
Super Dimension Fortress Macross
Super Dimension Century Orguss
Super Dimension Cavalry Southern Cross

Story wise, the 3 Super Dimension series were unrelated, but similar in themes.  Orguss was dropped entirely from Robotech, with them using the earlier released MOSPEADA to be the final segment of the show.

I actually have an Orguss action figure at home, even though I didn't know what it was until years after I got it.

Orguss

They did not "step in."  A plaintiff brought suit against the trademark and the government ruled in the plaintiffs favor at this juncture.

Side note on the Native American / Indian.  Upon moving to New Mexico I learned that the Indians here prefer to be called Indians.  All the references you see around here pretty much all say Indian, from Indian tacos to Indian dances to the Indian Culture Center.  Generally, they think "Native American" is a stupid term.  Using just "Native" is acceptable.

The trouble with using Indian is well, India.

I think I'm going to just rent games until Destiny comes out.  I don't expect this to be my primary game system.

Is there a bigoted slur or profanity in the name BET? If so, you could complain that it should not be granted a trademark. Otherwise, the comparison falls flat.

There is no White Entertainment Channel......or any other race-only-in-name channel that i'm aware of. Why is a minority allowed to break their own moral-rule?

Just the fact that there is no WET Channel proves that therwe should be no BET, if we're gonna play by the PC-crowd, racism rules.

I thought a hands off approach on government regulations was a conservative principle.  All we are talking about here is the deregulation of the usage of Redskins as applied to sports teams.  Shouldn't you be in favor?

Deregulated? Umm, no.....that would mean they can use whatever name they please.

The way it should be.

But they can.  No one is making them change the name, the government is just saying they will no longer help them in instances where other parties name their teams the Redskins, or produce Redskin jerseys etc.  The government is saying, hey, you are on your own if you want to go with that.

Really, people that are upset about the trademark rejection are in fact arguing for government involvement.

The biggest problem I have with it is that we have a branch of the government deciding what is and isn't "offensive" based on speech. If you guys so clearly want to believe in the free market then why can't the USPTO sit back and watch the trademark wither away because the American people don't buy the products it's associated with? As it stands the people and our free market justify its existence. Sad but true.

Is the name offensive? Sure it is. But why should the government tell us what is and what isn't offensive when it comes to trademarks attached to a product?

The government didn't just decide this on their own, a group of Native Americans brought suit against the trademark, and while our government is a majority rule, it is also tasked with the protection of the minority.   Here's Thomas Jefferson on it

Quote
All, too, will bear in mind this sacred principle, that though the will of the majority is in all cases to prevail, that will, to be rightful, must be reasonable; that the minority possess their equal rights, which equal laws must protect, and to violate which would be oppression.

I'm intentionally avoiding everything about this game.

Is it an MMO or what?

Sort of.  The server populates with randoms, so you will run across other players as you play. It might be doing something clever like changing servers on you as you go through inside areas between open sections.  There's a central town hub where you'll see a lot of randoms, as well as all the shops.  Mission selection is done from orbit in your space ship, and in the alpha you could select a story mission, a 3 man strike mission, or an open explore mode where you take on random quests from beacons throughout the map.  There was also a selectable PvP mode.  There's a full loot system, along with leveling up your character and skill trees, individual loot items can level up and be upgraded as well, often with their own min skill trees.  When in explore mode there are also area group events that spawn from time to time, like an enemy drop ship bringing in a spider tank, or a crashed ship that needs to be defended through several waves of attacks etc.

Spoiler for Hiden:
Coldhands completely removed from show.  Brienne does not fight the Hound. Varys does not leave with Tyrion.  Jojen doesn't die outside.   In the show Tyrion doesn't find out what actually happened with his first wife Tysha and the infamous "wherever whores go" line was cut.  Also no Lady Stoneheart but they may hold that for the season opener, though I'm thinking she's going to suffer the same fate as Coldhands.

It's always been smoke and mirrors anyways. Why not change the message? How beneficial is all this cloud/dedicated technology for people who aren't signed up for Xbox live? If someone just wants to play single player, can they still take advantage of the building falling down technology without having to subscribe to Live?
More to the point what happens with no internet connection.  Some of the XB1's early always on requirements make more sense that way
