Great game, fun times.

There's a log in the iDroid

I'd be curious what you love about it as I've owned them all but have a hard time actually playing any of them for any length of time before giving up. And I still have Ground Zeroes. Un-played.  icon_frown

Was trying to find a YouTube review of it I'd seen from someone who was less than impressed but I wasn't logged in so have no history to back through. He got very worked up, might have had an accent and was constantly ringing a bell (like the kind you'd have on a service desk - ding! ding!) whenever he made a 'point'. What I remember was the 'open world' aspect of it wasn't really all that open (roads only?) and the AI was supposed to be bad. Anyone know whom that might be?

I don't know why you'd focus on some Youtuber when the game is critically acclaimed from essentially every gaming site out there...

Anyhoo, as to your questions.  Afghanistan is sort of funneled into roads and canyons, but you can still basically go anywhere in it as you see fit, Africa on the other hand does have wide open plains so that complaint (which I think is rather unfounded really) is addressed in the second zone.  As to the AI it can be dumb, but does a reasonable job, it investigates when your noisy or sees something, checks last known positions, shoots down fultons, and wakes up sleeping soldiers.  Yeah you can make it do some dumb stuff if you try but like, what game can't you do that in?

Graphically the game looks great, and runs at a solid 60fps on consoles.

Gameplay it really shines.  The controls, specifically in shooter mode which I'm using, make a lot of sense.  So that's one way it's been improved over previous games.  The other thing is it is very much a stealth/combat sandbox whereas I feel the previous games (and frankly most stealth games) got a little too puzzley.  This does not suffer from that problem, you don't feel like you are trying to solve a puzzle, and more that you are coming up with a strategy.  You can go loud or quiet, and the game gives you numerous tools for either approach.  You have sleep grenades, decoys, stun grenades, mines, emp mines, sleep mines, anti-vehicular mines, c4, silenced weapons, stun weapons, a vast array of guns from pistols to assault rifles, to sniper rifles to grenade and rocket launchers and machine guns, to eventually being able to fully customize and build your own guns from parts of others.  You get to choose the time of day or night and the general approach you take to infiltrating a base, you can even call in air strikes or helicopter overwatch.

Then there is the extra strategy layer of managing your base, research, and sending teams on combat missions.

I should finish MGSV this weekend, on Chapter 2 now (which is sort of post game), well until MGO hits early October as that looks to be a very cool multiplayer mode.

Also will probably waste some time in Diablo.

So, I've been really curious about this one since I love open world games and such, but I never cared for Metal Gear Solid in the past.  I'm trying Ground Zeroes again and getting a bit further in it with a different control scheme, but I find I'm dying a lot and the mission is taking me a long time.

Does the full game explain mechanics, options and such better than Ground Zeroes at all, or is it all pretty obtuse and learning from failing and retrying?  It feels like if I get spotted I might as well die and restart from a checkpoint, but that gets really old really quickly.

Oh, and there's a 25% off coupon for GMG, which is why I'm considering it, heh.  METALG-SOLIDV-25PERC

There's really no reason to be restarting checkpoints in Phantom Pain unless you are obsessed with getting a perfect stealth rating.  There are numerous loud options if you want to go that path.

Some of the stuff might be explained better but check this should help

Specifically watch the video to better understand CQC

Also I too do not like the other MGS games, but I love Phantom Pain.

In a lot of ways MGSV is more like a crazier and better Far Cry than an old Metal Gear game.
207  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Weekend Playlist - 09/11 Patriotic Edition on: September 14, 2015, 02:59:52 PM
So have folks finished Metal Gear or are they just not playing it around here?  I'm a little surprised at its lack of showing in these threads considering the quality and nature of the gameplay.

If this were a new franchise, or a stand-alone story within the existing franchise, it looks like something I'd be all over.  I like open world games, stealth games, and base building / resource management games, so everything about this would be right up my alley.

Metal Gear Solid lore, however, seems completely impenetrable to half the people who've played the games, much less those of us who haven't.  I got Ground Zeroes free from PSN earlier in the year, so maybe I'll give that a shot and see if the mechanics are strong enough to hold my interest in the absence of a story I would comprehend.

-Autistic Angel

I think it totally is.  I'm only vaguely aware of the overarching story and characters as I've never really got into the series before.  Ground Zeroes will give you a decent idea,  though you have a fraction of the tools and the GZ map constitutes what would be but one of the several bases in The Phantom Pain's open world.
210  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [360,PS3,XB1,PS4] MGS5: The Phantom Pain on: September 08, 2015, 07:03:49 PM
It's pretty great, possibly the best tactical/stealth game to date.  Gives you lots of tools to handle objectives in multiple ways, and you only get cooler toys as the game goes on.  You can go guns blazing as well if that suits you more.  It's also like 90% real gameplay, which seems a bit atypical for this series but a change I at least appreciate.

Just finally unlocked Quiet for missions, though I was pretty fond of D.Dog, and started taking missions on in Africa.

The only thing I'm not fond of is Mother Base is kind of a pain to get around, though the fast travel (Snake in a box on the loading docks) helps a bit there.

This is a pretty funny look at the game, some spoilers though (boss fights, and characters from other games that show up)

The tanker was carrying mostly water along with breast milk.  Also they weren't hurting for resources like in Road Warrior, they've established a sustainable ecosystem between Gastown, the Bullet Farm, and the Citadel.  The Citadel provides food and water, while Gastown fuel, and the bullet farm weapons for defense from bandits.

Wow, what a horrible movie. Way too Hollywood. Corny, painful script. At least the Road Warrior was fun action, this was drawn out silliness.

The bolded statement makes ZERO sense to me. This movie was so NOT Hollywood I can't even imagine why you thought it was.

Yeah it's sort of the antithesis of current day Hollywood, the movie was all show and almost no tell, and every other movie is just loaded with exposition over explaining everything.  Also from a production standpoint the high use of practical effects is also very atypical in this day and age.

For what it's worth the International Federation of Film Critics just named this the best film of 2015 (they judge July to July, yeah I know the time period is odd)

Previous years winners were Boyhood, La vie d'Adele, Amour, and Des hommes et des dieux, so you know lot of Hollywood stuff  ninja

Ok I'll add a description since I left it out of my first post.

Show follows a genius hacker, Eliot, who suffers from mental illness as he gets entangled with a conspiracy to overthrow one of the worlds largest and most influential companies.  Presented primarily through the lens where we the viewer are a product of Eliot's delusion.  The handling of hacking is probably also some of the most realistic ever to grace television.

The cinematography and soundtrack are top notch, and the acting is fantastic.

Don't be fooled by this being on USA, it's right up there with the AMC/HBO shows.

I'm not a fan of exclusive content (Hello, Destiny) but according to Square Enix  Without MS support the game probably wouldn't have been made.  This sort of sound like what Sony did for Street Fighter 5 (which the XB1 will never see).  Also, I know you're not a fan of Polygon, but that's where I originally read the story

I want to circle back to Destiny, MS couldn't even promote the game on their system and Destiny was basically being shown as a Sony exclusive.   Only distinction is that MS console owners got the game at the same time with less content even after two expansion with more exclusive timed content going to Sony

Again, getting a 3rd part game as an exclusive sucks no matter which console marker does it

This is bullshit in this instance.  The game was not announced as exclusive and clearly was in production, the deal came after.  Dead Rising 3 is closer to SF5 in terms of exclusivity.  Square's comments seem like damage control after the backlash that they clearly did not expect.  I even recall some Crystal Dynamix employee twitter accounts expressing surprise at the news.

Destiny timed exclusive DLC is terrible too, but Activision has a long history of making those types of deals with Call of Duty (where previously Xbox was getting the timed DLC all of last gen), and in both of those instances we are talking about DLC (often of questionable quality) and not full games.

I agree! icon_lol

Seriously though, I kind of think there is a correlation to the notion that the volume of major game releases has decreased over the last 20 years or so, both PC and console. The industry has consolidated so much that games are either derivative high profile AAA releases or indie/crowdfunded obscure releases. The result is that there simply isn't the volume of decent games to talk about or get excited about. As a group, we seem to be on the older side of the gaming demographic here so it takes a lot to get amped up about a lot of games. I know for me personally, I used to be a big PC gamer but the way gaming has evolved, I rarely game on PC and spend almost all my time on consoles but even then I play for shorter sessions than I used to. It's often because life in general intrudes, but frequently, by the time I have free time in the evenings to game, I'm just too tired. Getting old definitely has an effect on my gaming habits.

I think, if anything, it's the opposite.  There has never been more quality games.  A smaller number of games can actually lead to more discussion per game as with less to choose from more people in the same group are playing the same things, as the choice of games increases the amount of games played by the overall userbase increases but with a lower percentage of that population to each game, as no one can reasonably play all those games, not even Hark can keep up with the gaming marketplace as it is now.
231  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Waning forum usage? on: July 22, 2015, 06:18:30 PM
I sort of understand the desire for a high volume site, but even NeoGAF which is one of the largest dedicated gaming forums, gets by just fine with basically a single unified gaming forum.  But for a low volume site it really makes no sense.  Should a PC game forum be further segregated into FPS, Adventure, Strategy, etc. subforums?

Gratch's comment about "have become very specific in which games we play/have interest in" rings true. in real life, there are some people who are 'gamers' at my job, but with so many games available and people having their own narrowed interests, it's very hard to get anyone to talk about the same thing. just a few weeks ago a guy was trying to get me into some mobile-phone based Korean freemium MMORPG - i was like NO. there's someone who spends all of their non-programming time watching Starcraft gameplay videos. that's really their only interest... pretty much every day for the past five years. i have no real interest in Starcraft, so that avenue of conversation is out. there's a DOTA2 contingent - i don't care about battle arena games either.

I find this to be an interesting evolution of the gaming audience.  It used to be that gamers could find some sort of common ground, but that's becoming more and more difficult.  Although some of my IRL friends are gamers, I have exactly zero in common with any of them because our tastes vary so wildly.  They're all into MP shooters, sports games, or MOBA's, and I tend to stick to RPG's.  Although we might all be considered "hardcore gamers", there's literally nothing we have to discuss because we're on such opposite ends of the gaming spectrum.

Very true.  You'd get more out of me if there were a PC forum again,

Why? This just doesn't make any sense, it's not like PC game discussion is forbidden, and no game here is really getting enough traffic to warrant a PC and a console thread for the same game.  Wanting a PC forum is like wanting a WiiU, PS4, or Xbox One subforum.

If that's the point of the game ala Left 4 Dead, then that's fine. But a game like Journey should at least have an option (or Drop-in/Drop-out like the LEGO series) that you can turn on or off at your discretion.

It's sort of random multi-player not so much forced multi-player.  It will just insert people into your game if the two of you are at the same spot.  You can also play offline.
