I agree! icon_lol

Seriously though, I kind of think there is a correlation to the notion that the volume of major game releases has decreased over the last 20 years or so, both PC and console. The industry has consolidated so much that games are either derivative high profile AAA releases or indie/crowdfunded obscure releases. The result is that there simply isn't the volume of decent games to talk about or get excited about. As a group, we seem to be on the older side of the gaming demographic here so it takes a lot to get amped up about a lot of games. I know for me personally, I used to be a big PC gamer but the way gaming has evolved, I rarely game on PC and spend almost all my time on consoles but even then I play for shorter sessions than I used to. It's often because life in general intrudes, but frequently, by the time I have free time in the evenings to game, I'm just too tired. Getting old definitely has an effect on my gaming habits.

I think, if anything, it's the opposite.  There has never been more quality games.  A smaller number of games can actually lead to more discussion per game as with less to choose from more people in the same group are playing the same things, as the choice of games increases the amount of games played by the overall userbase increases but with a lower percentage of that population to each game, as no one can reasonably play all those games, not even Hark can keep up with the gaming marketplace as it is now.

I sort of understand the desire for a high volume site, but even NeoGAF which is one of the largest dedicated gaming forums, gets by just fine with basically a single unified gaming forum.  But for a low volume site it really makes no sense.  Should a PC game forum be further segregated into FPS, Adventure, Strategy, etc. subforums?

Gratch's comment about "have become very specific in which games we play/have interest in" rings true. in real life, there are some people who are 'gamers' at my job, but with so many games available and people having their own narrowed interests, it's very hard to get anyone to talk about the same thing. just a few weeks ago a guy was trying to get me into some mobile-phone based Korean freemium MMORPG - i was like NO. there's someone who spends all of their non-programming time watching Starcraft gameplay videos. that's really their only interest... pretty much every day for the past five years. i have no real interest in Starcraft, so that avenue of conversation is out. there's a DOTA2 contingent - i don't care about battle arena games either.

I find this to be an interesting evolution of the gaming audience.  It used to be that gamers could find some sort of common ground, but that's becoming more and more difficult.  Although some of my IRL friends are gamers, I have exactly zero in common with any of them because our tastes vary so wildly.  They're all into MP shooters, sports games, or MOBA's, and I tend to stick to RPG's.  Although we might all be considered "hardcore gamers", there's literally nothing we have to discuss because we're on such opposite ends of the gaming spectrum.

Very true.  You'd get more out of me if there were a PC forum again,

Why? This just doesn't make any sense, it's not like PC game discussion is forbidden, and no game here is really getting enough traffic to warrant a PC and a console thread for the same game.  Wanting a PC forum is like wanting a WiiU, PS4, or Xbox One subforum.

If that's the point of the game ala Left 4 Dead, then that's fine. But a game like Journey should at least have an option (or Drop-in/Drop-out like the LEGO series) that you can turn on or off at your discretion.

It's sort of random multi-player not so much forced multi-player.  It will just insert people into your game if the two of you are at the same spot.  You can also play offline.

Also picked up armada, and it has yet to really grab me.

I grew up in the 80s as well, have very fond memories of most of what is referenced and still hated it.  It just doesn't do anything interesting with any of it, it's all "hey remember that geek culture thing from the 80s, that was awesome, the main character thinks it's awesome too and as a result of thinking it was awesome he's awesome."

I have a feeling that it will be free for PS+ by Halloween though.

I dunno, there's lot's of other games that can end up in PS+ before that.  They've been trying more to have games launch on PS+ like Rocket League, and  going into the holiday I can see them dropping a launch retail game into Plus finally or one of the remasters.

What you need to understand is, that right now you are the minority.  The majority of people consuming content are looking for videos. Not video game related but just look at The Dissolve, a movie site whose focus was on quality writing,  just shut down last week due to not being able to make it in the current marketplace.

The only text based stuff that seems to still do well are clickbait and listicles.

Is this true though, that video is the more popular source of information now? I don't know how Gamespot ranks among the gaming sites, but are they going to video because it's popular or because they are trying to differentiate themselves by going for a YouTube kind of thing? Are they the goto gaming site now because they have so much video?

News web sites all seem to want to play a video article now, but is that because they can force an ad in that probably generates more money than a print ad, or because the video draws more views? (Not to mention they already have the content made from their channel, so there is no added expense and it advertises for their channel/shows in the process.) There doesn't seem to be anything that suggests news sites that play video are more popular than non/video sites, since most of the top sites don't use a lot of video. There are many top news websites that are very successful using little to no video.

The Dissolve shut down sounds like it was just harder to survive and get noticed in a crowded web than anything to with video vs writing.

I am old, but I much prefer a written review over a video one unless it's a game I am really unsure about and want to see a video of. I can get the highlights and the general overview by the time the video ad is over. I can't believe I am unique in this way. Video sites have their place, but I doubt they are preferred for many.

The GiantBomb guys certainly seem to think so, it's come up a few times on Bombcast, and even the most recent Beastcast.  Also you saw sites like Joystiq shut down not too long ago and they seemed to be one of the bigger gaming news aggregator sites.  On the flip side you have Pewdiepie who just had his revenue numbers released at 7.5M for his Youtube channel, and that's just his cut, who knows how much the channel is generating for Google on top of that.

You're not unique, you just reside in a niche market now and are not the primary target audience.

SWEETNESS! I'm also still instinctively hitting the L2 when I try to brake, which completely fucks you during a chase/race/driving around.

Their choice of mapping for this one puzzles me. Using L2 for brake/reverse would have been much better than what they're using it for now, which is to have you hold it down to stay in battle mode. My hand gets tired during extended battles due to having to constantly hold this down. They would have been better off making battle mode a toggle and putting it on the square button (PS4) instead of having the braking there. I mean, it's not like you're about to voluntarily and temporarily turn back into driving mode in the middle of a battle, so why force us to hold down the button?

Exactly. Especially considering the frequency of the tank fights. I initially ignored some of the Batmobile upgrades because I didn't think I'd be fighting drones all the time. Now, I'm pumping points into that section because tanks are everywhere. This pisses me off considerably because now I'm ignoring other moves/upgrades I need for the hand to hand sections. And I agree with you on the hand cramping. Stalking the uber tanks while holding down L2 with my middle finger and steering with my thumb is poor design.

Switch tank controls to Toggle mode!

It's very very heavily inspired by P.T. the now cancelled Silent Hills announce demo that was out on PS4.  A lot of the buzz they are getting is pretty much because of that now that SH is cancelled and P.T. was pulled from PSN.

I saw a breakdown over on GAF pointing out they were looking at Playstation v. Xbox on Twitter but not taking into account terms such as PS4 or Sony.  You can play around with Topsy to get an idea

PS4 and Xbox are essentially tied as terms.

So how are people feeling about the game so far? I think I've done about 40% of the story missions so far and I'm finding the 9 and 10 ratings a little generous. The story itself is good and I'm curious to see where it goes, but everything else seems very half-hearted. The bat mobile adds a nice bit of variety to the formula, but it's by no means amazing gameplay. The story mission designs are pretty uninspired and just seem to peter out without boss fights, and I'm not even a big fan of boss fights. The side missions are all pretty short and repetitive. Even the joker trophies seem pretty phoned in, with most being very easy to find and some involving just shooting an item off the side of building that's easily marked on the map.

I feel like this is the Uncharted 3 of the Arkham franchise.
While I think the huge jump (no pun intended) in his counter range looks laughable, and the batmobile can be a pain in the ass at times, I have been enjoying the storyline and the world is a huge improvement over City.  It's a great game, but compared to the Witcher, falls behind in GotY contention.

Yeah I think the map layout is much better here, the big restricted area right in the middle of the City map was a pain in the ass.

Honestly. If someone feels deep inside they are black, who are we to say they're not black? Just as if a d00d feels deep inside he is a woman, who are we to say they're not a woman?  It makes perfect sense.

Rather than treat the mental disorder (in this case self-hatred and in the other Gender Identity Disorder), we should embrace it it as 'their truth."

Now we also have the interesting problem of 'agenderism' in which case someone is either both genders or neither.  Again, if we are to embrace these types of things instead of try to correct them, let's go all the way. Also for these folks we must appropriately apply the use of 'they/them' rather than him/her or what's probably more spot on 'it'.

Thus if what's her name 'identifies' as black, then who are we to race shame her and force her to conform? I mean no one should be ashamed of anything they do regardless of how crazy or out of touch with reality it is, right? This is the new normal. There is no normal and no one can be corrected for anything.

Where am I wrong in this?

All over the place.  You're main assertion is a false equivalency.  You're also assuming that things like gender identity, and I'm going to guess sexual preference as well, are treatable.   In regards to transgenderism there's still a lot of scientific research in process, but there's already evidence that the transgender brain structure is physically different from the cisgender brain of someone of biologically the same sex.  How exactly do you treat that?

There are basically two types of video games kickstarters these days, small team low budget indie projects, and higher budget projects where the kickstarter is really a proof of market feasibility to receive funding.  A lot of these bigger kickstarters already have funding lined up with an outside source provided they can hit their kickstarter goal.  Bloodstained had a deal with Deep Silver I believe.  It looks like Sony will be chipping in some cash now that Shenmue has funded.

I do hope they have some good explanation for the setting - tons of technology but they live in caves and wear animal skins?

Looks like maybe it was a design they built a story around, and not vice versa. If it's fun it doesn't really matter I guess.

I thought it was obvious from the trailer. Technology rebelled against humanity, so humanity's use of it is very limited. It's kind of like The Matrix, only the machines are actually trying to exterminate humans directly.

Yeah, but they still use mechanical objects like their weapons - they can't make things like clothes, housing, vehicles, whatever? Why not make airplanes and bomb the monsters instead of shooting them with crazy explosive arrows?

It looks like there was a cataclysmic event that culled the population and set the survivors back to the stone age.  Survival skills probably took a forefront over science and engineering, and if everything had gone digital prior to the event a lot of skills would have been lost.  We don't know exactly what is behind the Zoids, and I'm sure finding that out will be a big part of the game.
