I'm fully on board, but was since the alpha so haven't had as much new to say.

I think that I will go Warlock first with the retail release. There was a moment during the moon mission that pretty much cemented it. When I opened the doors to the temple and got rushed by all the melee enemies I did a slow glide jump backwards and killed them all from the air as I hovered away (I really should have saved it as a clip, but I wasn't thinking). Just something that you can't do with the Hunter's double jump, though the Titan sort of has a similar jump skill. Granted it would have probably made me a sitting duck in PvP but in PvE it was pretty awesome.

TLDR, basically on par, XB1 beta is only 900p but supposed to be 1080p at launch, some very minor gui enhancements on PS4.

I'm not sure.  It always takes a bit to figure out what the math really does behind the scenes in these games, seems like it's never exactly straightforward.

The ?? means they are way higher level than you.  Your ability to do damage is based on your level discrepancy as well as your weapon's Attack value.  I think they sort of botch the weapon stats page as from what I can tell by hovering over stuff, Impact is the damage per shot, but generally people instinctively are looking at that giant number which is the weapons ability to damage higher level enemies.  It's weird, and I don't understand all the interplay there yet.

I don't get the feeling that's what impact is at all, seems to me the number IS attack damage and impact is hit stun.  With a high impact weapon you can stun lock an enemy.  There is also an upgrade on some weapons that says 'increase attack damage' and it only affects the number rating, not the bars

Hover over the stats.
This is basically what they say when you do
Attack : allows your weapon to damage 'higher level enemies'
Impact: "damage each round" inflicts.

Now that I've completed the first mission. What if I play with a friend who hasn't. Do i need to be on his fire team to do his version of the mission? or can he be on mine and I go with him?

You can rerun missions whenever, as well as adjust their level somewhat.  In the beta missions seem to be offered at 2 level settings.  If you want to play together though you need to be in a fireteam.

I believe both FMA, and FMA:Brotherhood are on Netflix.  Brotherhood is a remake with proper manga ending, as FMA caught up and surpassed it and went in its own direction.   So they are sort of the same show up to a point where they diverge.

Warlock has arguably the best jump skill, but it is the trickiest to use at first.  It's not hard, so much as counterintuitive to how
we normally expect them to work.  You have to double tap quickly to gain any real height, as opposed to the Hunter or Titan where it behaves more how you would classically expect.  With the Warlock if you hit jump again at the apex of your jump it doesn't do much for you.

Do yourself a favor and watch Sword Art Online, season 1. It's a great anime that explores what happens if you trap people in a VR MMO, including PK and real death situations.

On that note I'd strongly recommend Log Horizon (on Crunchyroll).  It's another trapped in an MMO anime, but focuses heavily on guild politics and MMO combat roles/strategy, as well as figuring out how the rules of the game actually work now with them in it.  One thing I like quite a bit is that they don't go to the "die in the game die in real life" trope like Sword Art does.   There is definitely a death penalty though and it is a heavy one and IMO is far more interesting that that trope.

I'll be following this thread, but if you post about an anime can you at least share which service it's on.  I tend to stay away from Hulu

Alndoah Zero, Hunter X Hunter, Argevollen, Jojo's Bizarre Adventure, Broken Blade, Gargantia on the Verdurous Planet, and Valvrave are all on Crunchyroll.  They may be on other services as well.

Kill La Kill is on pretty much everything I think.
181  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Anime thread of anime on: July 22, 2014, 05:49:47 PM
Kill La Kill is my favorite anime in years.  Jimmy you should check out the three mecha animes I listed above.  Broken Blade (aka Break Blade) is more of a miniseries with 6 one hour episodes and is complete.  Aldnoah and Argevollen just got started airing a few weeks ago.

Also for Gundam style mecha there was Valvrave but it didn't quite click for me.

Oh, another decent mecha show was Gargantia on the Verdurous Planet.  I enjoyed this but it's a bit lighter on the combat and is more about the situation and world  the characters are in than mech battles.
182  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Anime thread of anime on: July 22, 2014, 04:08:46 PM
There's a lot of anime talk in the Netflix thread, and there's quite a few shows that they don't carry so we probably should have an anime thread.

There are few avenues for anime right now
Netflix and Hulu both have decent anime selections.  If you are looking for simulcast as well as a back catalog Crunchyroll is pretty good.  Funimation is another site that runs simulcasts as well as has a back catalog.

Lately I've been watching Hunter x Hunter, JoJo's Bizzare Adventure, and very recently Argevollen and Aldnoah Zero.

Hunter x Hunter is well established now and is nearing the end of its run as is at 138 episodes.  This is a Shounen like Bleach or Naruto but does subvert a lot of tropes along the way.  I definitely recommend checking it out.

Jojo's is probably best known from the fighting games, and is a fun ride.  It follows a different generation each story arc.  It gets off to a somewhat shakey start
as the first story arc is kind of ok but once we get to his grand son's story in arc 2 it really takes off and becomes a wild ride.

Argevollen is, kind of a disappointment.    Basically a cross between a super robot and a mecha anime.  The mecha are very battletech so I had high hopes but the plot hasn't really done much yet and and several small things annoy me such as there being no flying units of any kinds (not even fighter planes) but these mechs are all highly sophisticated, and it's never explained as to why.   The first episode has the good guys defending a wall and the enemy introduces their new super units that can...jump.  At least in something like Broken Blade where this is also the case it's in a world where the mechs are powered by magic and it's a lot easier to swallow.
On that note Broken Blade is worth a watch.

Lastly, Aldnoah Zero,  which is another mecha show.  This though seems to be the real deal and the first three episodes have been fantastic.  A conflict between earth and a Mars colony where the Mars colony has found ancient alien tech that far outclasses anything Earth has.  Here we have Earths heroes fighting with smart tactics to try and overcome a vastly superior Martian force.  They also make some reveals that I feel other shows would have dragged out for an entire season.  A note about this show specifically, they have already had some very important stuff happen post credits, so be sure to watch past those as they aren't just episode previews.

I really can't decide if I want to go Hunter or Warlock when the game launches.  I think I like the Warlock super better, but I do love that throwing dagger the hunter gets.   The level 15 Bladedancer Hunter subclass looks pretty awesome too from looking at the skill tree.

ATB: To be honest, this will probably be an MMO that doesn't play as much like an MMO, but if the thing about MMOs that you hated was the loot grind, you should probably still avoid this.

From all that I'm hearing, the best way to see if you'll be interested in the gameplay over the long run is if you liked Borderlands 2's combat. It's almost the same style of shooter where you have positioning and movement, but the damage is heavily level dependent, to the point where if you're 2+ levels above or below a target, they soak up a lot of fire.

Thanks, Turtle.

I never played borderlands.

The most offputting thing to me about MMO's is that for 'raids' you  need to have a bunch of other people to do  successfully.  I can't be beholden to a time schedule and I do 90% of my gaming solo and I'm not interested in memorizing DPS charts or taking anything that seriously slywink.

There were Strikes in the Alpha and these only consist of a 3 man team.  The full game is rumored to have Raids for 6 players (two strike teams), but there is nothing set to be any larger than that.  Group public events can have more players around them but where groups are restricted to 3 players you're really not going to see any of the crazy 50 man raids etc from classic MMOs.

So this is out and I've put several hours into it now and I'm enjoying it quite a bit.  The turn based combat and the way all the skills and environment interact is great.  Teleport is one of the better skills I've seen show up in a game like this in a long time, who doesn't enjoy teleporting a bad guy 15 ft up into the air above a burning patch of ground?  The game also manages to make a rain spell super useful.  Quests have been decent, and overall the game is kind of lighthearted.  I recommend everyone start the game with the Pet Pal trait,  the animals say some of the more amusing things and you get to do things like broker a romance between a stray and house cat.
