I think if we can just get Half Life 3 announced during the PC conference today it will end up as the most amazing E3 ever.

The Shenmue announcement even crashed kickstarter last night.

In the battle of the press conferences Sony won by a landslide, it's not even close.  Last Guardian, Final Fantasy 7 remake, and Shenmue each on their own are essentially a megaton and all 3 were at the Sony conference.  Now personal preferences of games shown may differ, but in the press conference competition Sony won big.   The Microsoft 360 compatibility announcement was maybe about equal to one of those.

Also, on the games front Sony had what I thought was the game of the show so far too with Horizon Zero Dawn, that looks simply fantastic.

This season was good, to me, the ending is shocking and he was one of my favorite characters, but of course I knew it was coming.  To say this season wasn't good is a stretch, to me at least.

The season had a lot of problems.  Heavy handed at times, fight choreography the wost it's been, some pretty dumb and kind of gross changes from the books i.e. Sansa/Ramsay or Stannis/Shireen, some really bad writing (all that Dorne stuff, ugh).   There were a few bright spots, the battle with the white walkers, and accelerating/condensing of Tyrion's plot was actually smart for the show, but I feel all the bad stuff this season outweighed the good.

Dorne

The book is full of foreshadowing of two ways for him to come back.   The opening chapter of the book is specifically about a wildling warg body jacking on death, as well as all the stuff with Stoneheart etc.  Also, in the books Jon has a bunch of dreams that seem to match old prophesies and he is an active important participant in his dreams.  So in the books there's reasons to question that are essentially absent from the show, note I called this out  up thread.

If only someone with the power to return the dead to life had just traveled to the wall...

Sure that's a way for them to do it, but that's not foreshadowing.  I mean do show exclusive watchers even really remember Thoros doing that, what 2 seasons ago?  We've never seen Melisandre do it.

Spoiler for Hiden:
according to the show runners, Jon Snow is really dead. Kit Harrington says he's not coming back next season. The perfect fuckery ending to a terrible season.

I liked the season, very entertaining. What didn't you like? Can't wait for next season since it is set up for a lot of stuff to happen. I do wish the good guys would stop dying, but then again, I love a story which isn't all roses and where good doesn't always triumph.

I read the book spoilers, so tonight's ending was no surprise. Thought they made it pretty obvious he was dead, not sure why anyone would think he wasn't.

Max's arc in Fury Road isn't about redemption, it's about rediscovering his humanity.  He starts the film almost as a feral animal.

As for Hardy if you want to see him shine you should watch Bronson, or perhaps Locke.

FWIW I think Bana's portrayal of Robert Bruce Banner was far more compelling than Norton's, and he seemed genuinely haunted and conflicted.

Tom as Mad Max? Ugh. Too much focus on "madness" (and uncompellingly so) and less on Max.

This was Death Race 2000. That's it.

Well, the first word in the title was "Mad" after all. smile Part of what I liked about this was how Max starts as a feral animal, and gradually regains his humanity over the course of the film. The opening narration is absolutely true when he says he's reduced to a single instinct. That's not a far cry from where he ended up after Thunderdome when he was lost to the sands and the wastelands. One could see him devolving further over time until we meet him again in Fury Road, by which point there's very little humanity left.

Oh, and I barely breathed during the final sequence when he was climbing over the guitarist and the action was happening in 57 different places at the same time. A lesser hack like Michael Bay would have fumbled this so catastrophically I can't even begin to imagine it.

I agree the spectacle was entertaining, but the plot was thin and it was almost like the main character was over-thought and under-delivered (IMO). At best he was a supporting actor. At worst, he was a bloodbag prop with some action scenes thrown in.

In regards to Max, this is true of all the Mad Max movies to a degree with the exception of the first, it's never really about him, but rather the situations he wanders into.  He is the post apocalyptic version of the wandering stranger from the old samurai flicks or westerns.  In regards to plot you are selling it short, the overarching plot isn't overly complicated (that's also not a bad thing), but there is a huge amount of world building in the background and the main characters all have character arcs that the film manages to convey over what is essentially one big action scene.  Lastly despite having one of the shortest scripts in memory I find this film to also be the most quotable in years.

Spoiler for Hiden:
Drogo flying in to kill the bad guys, and then Dany flying off on Drogo!!  I mean that is crazy iconic stuff.  And it is literally what I was screaming at the TV that I wished would happen but never thought they'd go there.  But they did and I absolutely loved it.  So now if I read it in the books, even if I know this is what GRRM intended, it's going to already be "spoiled" in some sense, like I'm reading the adaptation of a movie.  If he doesn't do something similar and completely ignores what felt like a defining moment in the series, it will be very disappointing, and of course it also changes what's possible in the books as well.  The fact that she can ride the dragon on the show means she's far less limited from getting from one point to another location-wise, which completely changes the dynamic in the books.  The last book I was dismayed that it felt like she had made zero progress on getting her cute ass over to Westeros to fight the zombies.

Your example has already happened in the books.

Yeah the show hasn't quite caught up to where the books left off yet.  The end of this season should catch the show up to the last book, then it's a question of if Martin can get the next book out before next season or not.

If he follows the main events the way we saw them, it will seem derivative no matter what he says.

Why would it do that? It's his story in both formats, though others have put their mark on it for the TV series. They're not making up stuff here, but using the story outline he's given them. Even the burning in this episode, which hasn't happened in the books, will supposedly happen in The Winds of Winter and was GRRM's idea. They're not just heading off in a different direction with the series. They're telling the same story, but in a more straightforward and effective way for the format.

Umm, they are making a lot of stuff up.

Bad choice of series then  icon_lol  I also hope the tide starts to turn soonish.

Considering how D&D have mishandled some plot points, I expect them to end the season on a scene that will cause a lot more people to give up on this show.

What do you think it could be?

My thoughts, book spoilers...
Spoiler for Hiden:
I fear they will close on Jon getting killed by the Nights Watch (specifically in the show it will be Olly that stabs him).  And while this happens in the book, and happens at the end of Dance with Dragons it is surrounded by a books worth of foreshadowing that he will come back either via warging into someone else or via the Red Priestess.  Now all of us readers could be wrong and he could be dead dead, but when Dance ended it left most of us with a bit of hope that he wouldn't stay that way.  None of that hope exists on the show, and assuming that the speculation about Jon's ultimate fate is correct D&D would be foolish to end the season on Jon's death as TV watchers only will just assume it's like Ned/Rob again and the show once again killing off one of it's only remaining likable characters.  Now if we are wrong, sure end on that scene, but if we are right, they'd be smarter to start 10 with his murder and end on his resurrection, but I fear they'd save that for the season opener next season

I got hit with two bugs last night:

1)  Mini-map doesn't load.  I can still see quest markers and the dotted line path, but there's no detail...just a blank brown circle.
2)  Completed quests not giving any XP.  A fairly significant program for an RPG to have.  smile  My understanding is that it was by design, in that you didn't receive any XP for quests that were too far below your current level.  I'm level 14, and the quest I finished last night was level 12...that doesn't seem like a very significant gap.  It also would seem to be a disincentive for players to actually and explore the world, if they knew they had to keep all quests within a certain range in order to get anything from them.

Hoping an upcoming patch will fix...probably holding off playing any more until it does.

The XP bug is known and is across all 3 platforms.  It's supposed to be fixed next major patch.

Ugh, I couldn't imagine his movement being even more sluggish.
I don't find him sluggish at all really, the movement is more jerky and clunky, but I don't find him slow.  I feel the problem comes from two factors, the excessive momentum on the character combined with the low amount of gradations on move speed on the analogue stick (basically just walk/run)

So is this just another "choose your own adventure" style interactive movie?

I would say yes but much truer to that concept and it seems rather appropriate here.  I think there's like 100 endings and 1000 branches.  Being basically a teen slasher movie, as the game goes you can end up getting any of the cast killed, so it can play out numerous different ways with completely different survivors in the end.  I think it has the potential to work really well here where with some other recent games the were much more linear affairs.  It looks to be rather replayable, which I don't think you could really say for something like The Order which is more gameplay with interactive cutscenes than "choose your own adventure."

I've played for several hours now, but I have hardly touched the crafting and haven't done any alchemy or other stuff.

Maybe it's just me, but it feels like the game would be better off without these peripheral aspects.  Too much inventory juggling, and paying for crafting materials or paying for dismantling, trying to find the right person..it seems like a level of complication beyond what I want to deal with.

Alchemy is pretty central to the Witcher lore as I understand it, and they make more gameplay concessions this time around with being able to use potions in combat.

Off the top of my head and not mentioned above.

Castor's keep became rape central when the rogue Nights watch took over.  And I believe that was a show invention as well.

Jamie just barely managed to avert a gang rape of Brienne when they were captured.

I understand your point, but I disagree with a couple of things. I thought the Cersi/Jamie thing looked very consensual. I also get the feeling from the show no one is safe. My first thought Subday night was someone was going to die soon between the various plots. Too much stuff is building up. Maybe I am the exception in those 2 things?

The prior things Ramsey had done in the show have been FAR worse to Theon. I can't believe someone could continue watching after its very much implied that Theon had his penis cut off, but then a rape of a woman was over the line. Every time they show Theon I still wince.

Well the "reveling in doing bad things to main chracters" implies "no one is safe" but not vice versa.  The show is becoming misery porn in a way the books were not.

And with your Theon point, look at it this way, imagine every time a male character got into danger they were castrated or nearly castrated, that's sort of what's started going on with the show with rape.  If next week Jon Snow got violently castrated, then Tyrion a few weeks later you'd probably start to think, hey WTF?

Seems there is some internet outrage over this. Rape is horrible, but so are many things that happen in real life and TV shows, why should it not be covered? Plus, they didn't show it.

I am not sure it is rape though, at least not by today's standards. An arranged marriage in medieval times would be similar and was probably very normal. It was the wife's job to provide children and from my very limited understanding, servants would often be around. Of course it was a little different in this case.

People are always going to find things to get outraged about, just surprised people who like the TV show are somehow think this crossed the line compared to all the other horrible things that have happened.

The problem is the show is excessively rapey and continues to use it as a goto with female characters, this is exacerbated where this is not the case so much in the books,  the Cersei/Jamie chapel scene came off as consensual in the books as opposed to rape in the show, and the Sansa specific incident does not occur in the books at all.   The Sansa/Ramsay wedding is a TV show fabrication.
A key difference from the books, is that in the books you grew to feel no one was safe, whereas the show now feels like it is just reveling in doing bad things to the main characters, these two things are not the same.
