Tyson and Nye commenting with slipshod science is one of  the most disappointing things about the whole affair.  I'd expect our public science figures to address it thoroughly or not at all.

USA Today says they didn't. (As well as just about every other article I have read.)

Then the Colts were cheating and heating the balls on the sideline.

Serious answer, that's just more bad reporting.  Half these stories have had misinformation, such as it was Jackson who noticed the difference in the ball, or how many can't tell the difference between pressure and weight.

It makes me mad.

It makes me mad that Brad Johnson did it. He was - I thought- a stand up guy and I used to cheer for him when I was in DC and he played for the Skins.  Now I think he's a piece of garbage.

I frigging hate cheaters.

Well frankly this looks like a witch-hunt.  Weather alone would account for about a 2lb drop in PSI

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CxsXFX3tDpg

Why wouldn't weather affect the Colt's balls the same way?

Who says it didn't?  Were they checked and what was the drop in them, because unless they were inflated wet and at 50 they would have a PSI drop.  It's possible that they were prepared under different conditions and we don't know what they started at, they could have started at 13.5 and suffered only a 1lb drop and still been regulation.

To act like weather doesn't have an effect on PSI is to deny science.

The price difference between 3.5' and 2.5' drives are not that steep. And SSD drives are all 2.5 sized (which the console can use natively).

And does anyone need more than 2TB of console storage? Seriously, delete something.

When some of us were already deleting things less than a year into this consoles life cycle, and games are just going to get bigger, there's a need for more storage.

~500GB felt a bit constricting but 2TB feels like plenty for a while.  That's about 40 ~50 GB games of storage.

Pretty easy, just get one of these and swap the drive with the PS4 drive.

Is it easy to copy your content over?

Just copy your saves and screenshots/video captures (if you care about them) to a USB thumbdrive and you're good to go.  That process could be a little more streamlined though, would be nice to have a "copy all saves" option, you kind of have to go game by game.

The other thing is you'll need to redownload all your DCL/Games, also make sure to reset "this is my primary console" or whatever setting post HD swap.

Action Game of the Year: Lords of the Fallen Dark Souls lite, but with immensely better graphics, story, and weapons. The two handed weapons had real weight behind them, and you needed excellent timing to use them effectively.

Interesting.  I've heard it compared to Dark Souls on multiple occasions.  How's the difficulty on Lords of the Fallen?  I liked nearly everything about Dark Souls (the gameworld, the graphics, the combat, etc), but that insane difficulty level was a complete turn-off.  Would love something similar that didn't make me feel like I was bashing my head up against a wall.

You're the first person I've heard say that the story is good though.  Every review says that's a major weak point for LotF.

The difficulty level is much more tolerable than Dark Souls. There are save crystals strategically placed throughout the world, and when you use one your health and health potions are restored. The twist is that each time you use the save slot, your experience point bonuses reset to zero. You gain these bonuses with each enemy you kill. For example, kill 5 enemies and the XP multiplier become 1.15. Kill 20 and it becomes 1.75. It makes leveling faster. Using a save slot resets it to zero, but that is only a minor impediment.

Combat is very similar. Forget about dodging with heavy amour. Two handed weapons have very slow arcs that can be interrupted by fast enemies, etc. Combat is nice and realistic. Getting your shield hit by a powerful blow can send you sprawling to the ground. Getting hit in the head can momentarily daze you, etc. The weapon assortment is MUCH greater than Dark Souls, and various gems you find can be crafted into the weapons to increase your poison damage, fire resistance, etc.

You can play a few different combat styles: sword and shield, two-handed, dual wield daggers, magic based, etc.

A few recommendations if you pick it up:

-Encumbrance is the most important aspect of combat. As with Dark Souls, low encumbrance might mean you can make 5 consecutive attacks before becoming fatigued, whereas high encumbrance may allow you only two strikes.
-Sword and shield is best for newbies.
-There is a magic spell that allows you to send a ghost version of yourself smashing into enemies. Max out this spell.
-Always be watching for hidden rooms and secrets. There is free DLC in the XB1 and PS4 versions that allow you to wear a ring that chimes when you are near hidden treasures, but you still need to figure out HOW to get to them. You get the ring via a quest early in the game.
-If a boss beats the sh!t out of you too quickly, you are underleveled. Unlike Dark Souls, there are not really any cheap bosses.

Finally, the story is good, but I should stress this is true only if if you read all of the scrolls and hidden parchments. There are very few cut scenes or NPC conversations.

This game was my hidden gem for 2014. I played it on a high end PC and the XB1.

I dunno about that one.  The bosses have some one hit kills, some of which you don't know are one hit kills until you die to them, also the hit boxes are bit wonkier than in the Souls games, and you will at times get hit by something that visually clearly misses.

I agree it's a pretty decent game though.

The soap opera effect has nothing to do with resolution, but is a result of motion smoothing to match the frame rate to the refresh rate, this is done by creating new frames by interpolating images between frames.   It helps reduce judder on fast pans, though it seems most people dislike the effect overall.

I believe on Sony TVs it's called Motion Flow.

Subject says it all, and idiots are to blame.

Sim City is the latest example I'd like to discuss.  If EA (very bad company anyway, though I love Fifa), were to create a full fledged Sim City And charge $15 or so for it without IAP bullshit, and made it similar enough to any Sim City we've played...  They would sell a truck load and gain a crap load more respect.

How the hell is this not a no brainer?  That was rhetorical, it's not, because you have brain dead tools spending shit loads of money on Candy Crush, FarmVille and the like and the real gamers amongst us get shafted.

The studios that do it gain my utmost respect, those that jump on the IAP shit wagon lose a lot of respect.  Blizzard is by all means the only big developer that gets it right.  EA isn't even freaking close.

Just had to vent, the ipad is a nice place to play while not at home, but would be so much better if the execs at these companies weren't such idiots.  I get that they may make more now, but long term the latter is a lot better option.  Charge $15 or $20 for a full fledged sim city game on ios without IAP shiit, your eyes will be open ea idiots.

Yeah, their eyes will be open, open to near zero sales.

This fight is over, the market expects mobile games to cost $5 and under and even $5 is considered the high end.

So I'm through chapter 13, I believe. I'm actually liking the game more...
Spoiler for Hiden:
now that the Alien is gone. It was more of a nuisance than anything and now the game is playing a little more like a stealth game.

Unfortunately I read a spoiler last night that the Alien (or Aliens) come back. I don't know how they come back story-wise, but oh well, there's a surprise down the drain.

I really like the environment design and the story, and Ripley is a great character. One of the few game characters whose actions and abilities make perfect sense based on how the character has been presented to us. The gameplay itself is what I'm still trying to work out if I like. As I mentioned, the Alien I just found to be annoying. I could crouch walk around without making a sound and then invariably have it drop through the ceiling and impale me while I'm working on a fuse box or whatever.

And yeah, still not finding the game scary at all. I don't think this is the game's fault, because lots of people say they find this game very scary. I guess it's just not the kind of stuff I find scary. Things that tend to get to me are creepy things like messed up monsters and creepy environments, and yes, jump scares. This game has robots and clean hallways and things that will grab you off the floor as you walk by, something that works exactly once until you know to look out for it. But Silent Hill and Outlast and stuff like that, I can't deal with.

Have you played P.T. yet?

And also, writing off Ubi is like writing off Naughty Dog for the total abomination that Uncharted 3 was, yes it was a terrible game.  U4 does look to be getting back on track though for that series, and we saw how ND bounced back with Last of Us.
142  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Ubisoft - A sinking ship? on: December 12, 2014, 08:09:19 PM
This has been a bad year for Ubi but comparing them to Naughty Dog is misguided, the two make very different games.  Naughty Dog games generally have been rather linear in the recent past as opposed to Ubi which has been producing mostly open world games.   This is also part of their problem though as they have been applying the same formula to multiple games, AC, Watchdogs, Far Cry, The Crew.

Also part of the problem Ubi faced this year with AC, aside from the bugs, is that they got one upped by Shadow of Mordor, which while refining a lot of other games concepts did bring something new to the table with the Nemesis system, which I will wager you are going to see other companies start to clone.  Also, it's not clear from your post but Ubisoft did not publish Mordor, that was a WB game.

If it sounds like I'm exaggerating, think again. This is what actually happens, and they've done this numerous times in the past. Hoping for something good to come for PC gaming from one of these events went past the "fool me twice" level many years ago.

While I essentially agree, what makes me think this time could be different is they did just buy Minecraft for 2+ billion.

Now I just stopped because the stupid inventory system led me into a trap.  I've been good about clearing out my common items I'm not using and equipping everybody when I come back to Haven (and heading to Haven when I discover it's getting full), but I've been warned not to get rid of "valuables" because a lot of them get used for side quests.

If it helps, the only "valuables" that have actual value, that I'm aware of, are the ones with a black-and-gold icon that are marked as "Creature Research Items". Those ones you can turn in to one the NPCs in town for extra info on / damage against particular enemy types. So as long as you do that before going to a vendor, you can auto-sell the remainder of your valuables each time you're at home.

- Ash

I hit the research station first, every time, but from what I've read, there are a few valuables that are needed for quests later in the game, with no real indicator that they might be useful.

I have occasionally seen items needed for completing requisition requests get lumped in with the "valuables" category.  Items like Spider Ichor, for example.

Yeah it's annoying, but I think those things only give you power and you should probably have plenty anyways.

Very good point. It's sad that the only place where you're likely to hear the honest truth is the daily show. It's also telling that RIP doesn't consider it real news.

I love the Daily Show and watch it every night, but I don't call it real news. It's basically the same as Fox but from a comedic point of view. They are bringing up stuff you don't see elsewhere, buts it's just as horribly biased as Fox.

It's a comedy show that uses news and current events as the basis of its humor.  I would argue that it is far more honest about what it is than Fox news.  I would also argue you're going to get better and more even handed coverage out of that 30 minute comedy show than you do out of Fox news as well.

All three news networks have issues.  Fox is essentially a straight up propaganda network, though inexplicably they do have Shepard Smith who strikes me as decent newsman.   CNN is a disaster of a different kind, often misreporting in a rush to be first, and frequently going down a misguided path of trying to be fair and to air all sides to a story but never questioning any of it.  Some would argue that MSNBC are the liberal version of Fox, but they aren't quite that far gone yet IMO, though they are certainly on path that could take them there, that's not to say that they aren't biased, it's just they don't come close to balancing that scale with Fox on the other side.

They keep pumping out RE games, seems it would be a no-brainer to our SFV on as many platforms as possible. They have enough money to put out RE Revelations 2 (on Vita as well), but not a fighter, which must cost a lot less to make than a story-based game?

I briefly mentioned this earlier in the thread, but remember that Microsoft outright refuses to allow any games on the Xbox platform to have cross-platform multiplayer with other platforms. Street Fighter V will be cross-platform in that way, so this could have been an important factor for the exclusivity.

That's weird because they did the Shadowrun FPS which had it.

Like I said about Tomb Raider, this is absolutely terrible for the gaming industry.

On the flip side...this also shows that Capcom is absolutely fucking broke. ALL THREE companies have bought exclusives now - Nintendo with Bayonetta 2, Microsoft with Dead Rising 3, and now Capcom with Street Fighter V.

AAAA gaming is fucking bankrupting the console industry as we know it. I'm saying it now - I think this is the last generation of consoles.

TR is a bit different from what we know about Bayonetta, DR3 and SFV.   Also Bayonetta is a Platinum/Sega game, not Capcom.  That's also one where we have some of the most insight as they've been very forthright in saying that had Nintendo not put up the money, they would not have made the game at all.  DR3 appears to be the same deal with MS.  It's hard to imagine that SFV falls into that territory though, but some rumblings support it.   Tomb Raider though was a game that was already in production and announced before the exclusivity deal happened.   Funding 3rd party games so they get made is good, paying to cancel versions on other consoles is bad.   There's so much grey around SFV I'll withhold judgement on where it falls until maybe someday we get some more insight.
