Is anyone selling the books after they get the buff?

I store them at my base in a magazine rack. Caps aren't really a problem for me and I have a water production plant to make caps if need be.

I love coming across places I recognize just from the visual. They play fast and loose with the geography of course but some locations are close enough, like the Pit in Harvard Square (College Square in game).

I suspect the game's not being on PS4 is a bigger factor in those numbers than the Fallout 4 release.

I mean, statistically, there are fewer people who have the right console for it and there are also many who have the Xbone who are waiting for the PS4 release anyway.

OTOH, I saw a report that the Xbone sales were up, so it may have been a short-term smart move for MS (even though I still think the exclusivity deal was badly chosen, handled and timed for long-term customer loyalty).

But whenever the sales come and people start playing it, they will enjoy it.  It's a great game.

The danger is that the sales may not come, or at least be seriously reduced. PC gamers have already had to wait, so many of them may just opt to wait longer for the inevitable Steam sale, potentially that summer. Then when it finally hits PS4 much later the game will likely be selling at half cost on Xbox One and will be competing with net new games seeing their first release. PS4 version would have to include all DLC expansions, which means they are also losing out on DLC sales. The fact that it's a great game makes its potential failure due to bad business decisions all the more depressing. Looking at Amazon top sellers, it doesn't look good in the US either.
126  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Rise of Tomb Raider on: November 16, 2015, 03:47:33 PM
So we got some sales numbers for the UK via GAF....
Rise of the Tomb Raider < 63,000, by comparison Tomb Raider (2013) debuted around 183,000 units. Fallout 4 did about 480k. Seems like the combination of a bad launch date and poorly thought out exclusivity contracts might kill this franchise. We'll need to see how it fairs in the States still, but wont see those numbers until Dec as NPD doesn't release weeklies.

This game probably wouldn't have happened without Microsoft, same as Street Fighter V and Sony, so the fact it'll come to Playstation at all is pretty cool.

I'm sorry to barge into this thread again, but I just wanted to clarify this bit. I have to admit I can't find any sources now since the original announcement news have more or less drowned in the more recent news (including reviews), but as mentioned earlier in this thread, the game was well into development before Microsoft stepped in. It would have been made anyway, and for both consoles simultaneously. I've more or less gotten over the majority of my annoyance with this, but I'm still super pissed that Microsoft paid to have the developers keep their mouths shut about the deal they made. As a result, Microsoft gets to tell the whole story as they want it to be portrayed, which results in the "it wouldn't have been made without us" silliness. If it hadn't been for Internet pressure, we probably wouldn't even have known about next year's PS4 release yet.

I'm glad that the game appears to be awesome though, despite all the negativity I pour on it. Looking forward to playing it next year.
I don't buy that line either, but they would probably argue that this version of the game would not have been made, which may be true.  We'll see how much that is true once the PS4 version hits and how it compares to the XB1.

Where Microsoft and Square Enix screwed up was that when the game was announced at E3 it was not done so as exclusive, that announcement came a few months later at Gamescom. I recall there also being some of its developers expressing a bit of surprise about it on Twitter but that's harder for me to verify now. Then all the confusion after Gamescom as to if it was timed or full exclusive. What Sony/Capcom did right with SF5, in comparison, was they came out right from SF5s announcement saying this was a Sony/Capcom joint and would be for PS4/PC. Someone bungled the PR on Tomb Raider, not sure if that fault falls with MS or SE though.

I'll end up getting it on PC or PS4 at some point depending on my queue of games when it launches on those platforms.

Not sure if that's supposed to be salty or not, but I'm totally fine with the exclusivity. This game probably wouldn't have happened without Microsoft, same as Street Fighter V and Sony, so the fact it'll come to Playstation at all is pretty cool.

But yes, if you don't have an Xbox One you'll have to wait a bit. Good news is, that wait will be worth it. biggrin

It's a bit salty, but ultimately I'm really ok with it. I have so much to keep me occupied in the meantime I have no problem waiting. I'm really not sure what the benefit is to Microsoft as the amount of people buying a system SPECIFICALLY to play this title earlier seems like it would be small to insignificant. But I'm sure someone has run the numbers.

The idea of the system seller I think is somewhat antiquated in general these days, now it's more about providing a breadth of compelling content, and this helps with Microsoft's overall picture. I suspect it was also in some ways to counter Uncharted 4, which was still slated for this year around the time this deal was seemingly struck.

Those hitches on the XB1 version, that's something to get upset about depending on how frequently they happen.

Uh I'm not blowing anything out of proportion so just chill.  All I am is passing along information and stating my opinion on it, so do with it what you will.  Believe me I would much rather be playing it on PS4 tomorrow then waiting for PC later.  The only video I noticed that really stuck out was the one where the player was in combat and switching to scope, I definitely noticed a big drop in frames there.  Hell that could be the capture, who knows.  Again, just passing along information so let's not get the console fanboy nonsense going if we can help it please.  I don't have a problem with occasional frame rate drops, 20-30 is plenty fine for me, but what I don't want is another Unity.  Again just my opinion, feel free to completely ignore.

I've watched like 3 of the videos which supposedly show off the big framerate hit and I'm just not seeing something to get outraged about.  This is what I consider a bad framedrop for a console game

Looks like TiLT may have been on to something.  There is a thread on NeoGaf (take that for what it's worth) claiming the PS4 version has massive frame rate drops.  No idea how much truth there is to this, though the couple videos posted do drop noticeably at times.  Apparently Bethesda is known for having difficulties with their games on Sony consoles.  That's news to me as other than Fallout 3 on 360 I've always played these games on PC.  I'll be waiting until release for reviews and impressions, but if it really is that bad I may drop my pre-order on PS4 and just wait until I can pick up a new graphics card with at least 4GB of memory.  Link to the thread in question below:

http://m.neogaf.com/showthread.php?t=1137035
The PS3 was weird, the PS4 is very similar to a PC and XB1 architecturally.  Also from what I saw of those videos you are blowing those frame drops way out of proportion.

134  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Helldivers: "Come on you apes! You wanna live forever?" on: November 08, 2015, 03:45:01 PM
The weirdest part is Sony is publishing it. I wonder if they will do some kind of 4 pack special. I could be in for it depending as I loved it on PS4 but never had a consistent crew to play it with, though honestly I'd still rather play it on my couch than my office. I guess Steamlink is an option but I don't think that handles voicechat or does it?
135  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: I have a PS4. What games do I *need* to experience? on: November 03, 2015, 11:30:28 PM
Bloodborne if you like the Souls games at all. It's probably my favorite in that style, though I understand the complaints that it lacks character build variety when compared to the Souls games proper.

Last of Us if you never played it on PS3.

Helldivers is a great co-op game, but kind of meh solo. I'm not sure what the online community is like these days, so I'd say grab it if you have a friend to play with online or locally on the couch.

Resogun is a very good arcade style game, especially with all the DLC (most of which I think was free)

I liked Infamous:SS a fair bit, it was great for a launch window title, still very nice looking too.

And while I agree Rocket League is amazing and is going to be on numerous GotY lists, it is also out on PC. It sounds like you haven't played it though, so you should correct that either way.

Also there's MLB: The Show if you like baseball.

Hey SoulChilde, do you have favorable impressions for Wasteland on the XB1? I need a single player game to play when I'm offline come December vacation.

The console port of Divinity: Original Sin is supposed to be really good if you haven't played that. I think it's generally thought of as the better RPG of the two. I played it on the PC last year and it was great.

My early 2011 MacBook Pro is about to die. It might just be the hard drive, but I'm not sure. The problem is I looked up the current MacBook/Air/Pro roster and for the first time I'm not really happy about what I see. The number one problem is the disk space. The MacBooks and Airs top out at 512gb ssd - my current 4.5 year old machine has 750gb. Where do they expect people to put their music and video? If you want to get 1tb on a pro you are kicking in $500 extra. You can get a nice deal on a 13" non-retina with 1tb, but then you get aging hardware.

Not sure what to do - I might see if I can verify that my only problem is only the hard drive and then just swap it out myself and wait. This machine has treated me really well and the 6750m still plays a lot of games well so I don't have to play everything on my PC.

They expect you to stream it or store it in the cloud.

The games in contention right now are Bloodborne, MGSV, Rocket League and Dying Light, with an honorable mention for Helldivers.

Witcher 3 doesn't make the cut because mechanically I find it infuriating at times. No Geralt I didn't want you to use Witcher sense I wanted you to parry that arrow, no Geralt dont keep running past the interact prompt, no Geralt don't inexplicably sheath your sword and try to fight these guys with your fists, wtf are you doing?  Then of course now that it's patched again I decide to sit down and just mainline the last few quests to finish it (I'm post Kaer Morhen) and the first mission I do I run into a bug where if you use Aard the final two enemies become invulnerable and you cant finish the quest, sooo... had to roll back 2 saves. The world and quest design is phenomenal, but man does the game still need a ton of mechanics/combat work.

143  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: XB1 or PS4? Best console for me plus kids on: October 05, 2015, 01:11:52 PM
XB1 has Forza for racing while PS4 has MLB: The Show for sports. Multi-plats tend to be slightly better on the PS4.  Kids games are essentially a wash, frankly better covered by WiiU. PS4 has more indie support though XB1 isn't as far behind now as they were, also on that front PS4 has more of those indie couch co-op games along the lines of Tower Fall. PS4 also has a bit more support for niche Japanese releases like Disgaea and JRPGs like the upcoming Persona 5. Also if you like the Souls games there is Bloodborne.  Street Fighter 5 will also be PC/PS4 only, so if you are into that series that is worth noting.

I did and the game looks like a disgrace.  Bad map design, bad changes to core mechanics, forced multiplayer that only slows down the core game, empty maps with simple bland graphics and a horrible framerate, numerous glitches from not carrying over settings, to falling through the world etc.  It's looks not only broken but fundamentally flawed in design.

The multiplayer looked to be optional, you could select single player levels.

Every time they completed a run it threw them back to a multiplayer lobby.  The one time they started the game as a private game to try and speed things up, soon as they did their first challenge run it threw them back into a public multiplayer lobby. The lack of quick retry is another bad thing, it looked to take way too long to restart.

I'd be curious what you love about it as I've owned them all but have a hard time actually playing any of them for any length of time before giving up. And I still have Ground Zeroes. Un-played.  icon_frown

Was trying to find a YouTube review of it I'd seen from someone who was less than impressed but I wasn't logged in so have no history to back through. He got very worked up, might have had an accent and was constantly ringing a bell (like the kind you'd have on a service desk - ding! ding!) whenever he made a 'point'. What I remember was the 'open world' aspect of it wasn't really all that open (roads only?) and the AI was supposed to be bad. Anyone know whom that might be?

I don't know why you'd focus on some Youtuber when the game is critically acclaimed from essentially every gaming site out there...

Anyhoo, as to your questions.  Afghanistan is sort of funneled into roads and canyons, but you can still basically go anywhere in it as you see fit, Africa on the other hand does have wide open plains so that complaint (which I think is rather unfounded really) is addressed in the second zone.  As to the AI it can be dumb, but does a reasonable job, it investigates when your noisy or sees something, checks last known positions, shoots down fultons, and wakes up sleeping soldiers.  Yeah you can make it do some dumb stuff if you try but like, what game can't you do that in?

Graphically the game looks great, and runs at a solid 60fps on consoles.

Gameplay it really shines.  The controls, specifically in shooter mode which I'm using, make a lot of sense.  So that's one way it's been improved over previous games.  The other thing is it is very much a stealth/combat sandbox whereas I feel the previous games (and frankly most stealth games) got a little too puzzley.  This does not suffer from that problem, you don't feel like you are trying to solve a puzzle, and more that you are coming up with a strategy.  You can go loud or quiet, and the game gives you numerous tools for either approach.  You have sleep grenades, decoys, stun grenades, mines, emp mines, sleep mines, anti-vehicular mines, c4, silenced weapons, stun weapons, a vast array of guns from pistols to assault rifles, to sniper rifles to grenade and rocket launchers and machine guns, to eventually being able to fully customize and build your own guns from parts of others.  You get to choose the time of day or night and the general approach you take to infiltrating a base, you can even call in air strikes or helicopter overwatch.

Then there is the extra strategy layer of managing your base, research, and sending teams on combat missions.

Thanks for that, helps with deciding on going in on yet-another MGS game or not.  icon_wink

And I wasn't "focusing" on any one in particular, just would like to go back and hear his rant again now that I've been off in happy review land for awhile. Got the impression he had a whole string of reviews with this little bell so thought maybe someone could point me in the right direction. No big.

Question, will going through Ground Zeroes actually give me a good idea as to what Phantom Pain will be like?

GZ should give you an ok idea as the controls and core of the game are the same, just note that it is missing a lot of the tools from the main game as well as things like the  buddy system and Fulton.  I think it was a bit harder to go loud in GZ too.

So, I've been really curious about this one since I love open world games and such, but I never cared for Metal Gear Solid in the past.  I'm trying Ground Zeroes again and getting a bit further in it with a different control scheme, but I find I'm dying a lot and the mission is taking me a long time.

Does the full game explain mechanics, options and such better than Ground Zeroes at all, or is it all pretty obtuse and learning from failing and retrying?  It feels like if I get spotted I might as well die and restart from a checkpoint, but that gets really old really quickly.

Oh, and there's a 25% off coupon for GMG, which is why I'm considering it, heh.  METALG-SOLIDV-25PERC

There's really no reason to be restarting checkpoints in Phantom Pain unless you are obsessed with getting a perfect stealth rating.  There are numerous loud options if you want to go that path.

Some of the stuff might be explained better but check this should help

If this were a new franchise, or a stand-alone story within the existing franchise, it looks like something I'd be all over.  I like open world games, stealth games, and base building / resource management games, so everything about this would be right up my alley.

Metal Gear Solid lore, however, seems completely impenetrable to half the people who've played the games, much less those of us who haven't.  I got Ground Zeroes free from PSN earlier in the year, so maybe I'll give that a shot and see if the mechanics are strong enough to hold my interest in the absence of a story I would comprehend.

I think it totally is.  I'm only vaguely aware of the overarching story and characters as I've never really got into the series before.  Ground Zeroes will give you a decent idea,  though you have a fraction of the tools and the GZ map constitutes what would be but one of the several bases in The Phantom Pain's open world.

It's pretty great, possibly the best tactical/stealth game to date.  Gives you lots of tools to handle objectives in multiple ways, and you only get cooler toys as the game goes on.  You can go guns blazing as well if that suits you more.  It's also like 90% real gameplay, which seems a bit atypical for this series but a change I at least appreciate.

Just finally unlocked Quiet for missions, though I was pretty fond of D.Dog, and started taking missions on in Africa.

The only thing I'm not fond of is Mother Base is kind of a pain to get around, though the fast travel (Snake in a box on the loading docks) helps a bit there.

This is a pretty funny look at the game, some spoilers though (boss fights, and characters from other games that show up)

The tanker was carrying mostly water along with breast milk.  Also they weren't hurting for resources like in Road Warrior, they've established a sustainable ecosystem between Gastown, the Bullet Farm, and the Citadel.  The Citadel provides food and water, while Gastown fuel, and the bullet farm weapons for defense from bandits.
