Well, all this insanely good word of mouth got me to bite on the game even though I only tried one previous Souls game with limited success.  I'm still just in Central Yharnam, and I've explored a decent amount of the area, but I'm just feeling kind of aimless and powerless.  I get to some new big nasty looking enemy, give it a go, and die horribly, and I have no idea how to tell if I'm supposed to grind a bit more, if I can take him if I just get better at the combat, or if I'm not even supposed to be fighting him yet.

I really want to get what all the fuss is about this game, so before this heads over to eBay...
"Wait, pug!  Before you give up on the game, at least play until you get to _______ to make sure you've given it a fair shake."

Grinding is of limited use, while leveling isn't unimportant, it will only get you so far.  In fact there's already a run out there of someone beating the game without ever leveling up the character.   Really, you as a player are leveling up as much if not more as your character.  It's about learning the flow of the combat, the weapons, and the enemies and how to best approach them.  In regards to where to go, these games have very little hand holding, they are all about exploration and trying to suss that out.

A few tips though.  Shortcuts are everywhere, if there's a spot that looks like it's a boss area or you know is definitely one and you haven't unlocked a shortcut yet, keep looking.
You don't have to fight everything, many enemies can be avoided, don't feel compelled to fight them all every time on your way to the boss, you can probably run past them once you
know where you are going.  Read the item descriptions, they add lots of flavor and occasionally quest information.  Read all the messenger notes in the Dream,  they explain
some combat mechanics like charged attacks or backstabs.  Practice the gun parry/riposte, it's super strong if you get the hang of it.

Do you need to keep the badges in your bag to get the benefits from them, or can you bank them?

Do you have a limited amount of storage space on your person?  I haven't actually put anything into the bank and wondering if I need to start.

There's pretty much no reason to ever move anything to storage, other than you  don't want to scroll past so many things in your inventory when looking at armor/weapons. Game does away with weight mechanics.  Storage is really only for overflow of carryable item allotment.  They really should have auto refilled everything like they do with vials/bullets.

I got the blood starved beast without much trouble at all, as the game allowed me to summon in a helper NPC.  One shotted him with the help!

I'm not so sure you can have NPC helpers, most likely it was another player who joined in to help you.  Nice to get past the BSB though, that took me awhile until I used the cocktails to distract him.

There are spots you can get NPC hunters, a messenger will say "ring bell for help"

I am stuck in a rut after beating father gascione.  I got to vicar amelia and have died a couple times.  I'm level 35 and my weapons are ok I guess?  level 3 and filled with gems.  Do I just keep leveling and working on bosses?  So much repetition dying and then farming, etc.
you could go to old yarnham.

Still stuck on Gascoigne, though I downed Cleric Beast first try and at this point I can clear pretty much the entirety of Central Yarnham without breaking a sweat or using any consumables (though I have to cheap-kill the werewolves, getting into a running battle with them seems to be a recipe for a quick death). I've leveled up a bunch of times but I can still barely get him to half health.

I think I need to get better at using oil+molotovs, I always hoard consumables and end up struggling through fights I really shouldn't. Otherwise I guess I'll just eventually level to the point where I can either kick his ass or soak the damage.

You have the music box?  That helps.  Also he's easy to parry in his basic mode.  He goes down very quick if you summon a co-op partner.

Picked this up after becoming obsessed watching streams on Twitch.

Loving it so far - started last night- but I'm dying all the freaking time. I haven't even made it to the first boss w/o dying yet. I've managed to kill everyone around the first bonfire in the street and then proceeded to die to the beast beating on the gate past the bonfire... sigh. Now I don't have any blood vials left and hardly any are dropping. Obviously I've not mastered the basic mechanics of the game since I can't kill the 'normal' mobs, let alone mini-bosses.

Any advice on getting solo mobs pulled rather than 3-4 at a time? That's what kills me - getting mobbed.
Pebbles should pull one guy at a time.  Also watch for their patrol routes.

The big guys with the bricks are easy to gun parry, and usually drop 2 vials.  Try to get the shortcut to the lantern unlocked, and it's a quick run eventually to either boss in the starting area, as well as to two of those brick guys and a wheelchair guy that you can farm for vials and bullets. Early phase of the game is getting comfortable with the flow of combat, the gun parry, dodges, your weapon's moveset and range etc.

Spent a little more time over lunch and started using pebbles. Right now just farming for blood echoes & blood vials - return to Hunter's dream and purchase what I can. Almost back to 14 Blood vials. Hopefully I'll be able to push further tonight. Thanks for the tips.

In the beginning I found dodging the big beast's attack was easier for me vice trying to do the gun stagger.  He will swing and if you dodge you will have time to hit him a few times before he recovers.  Stick and move stick and move!

Finally managed to get the first shortcut opened up. What a sense of accomplishment that was smile I also managed to do a couple full circuits to the shortcut w/o dying. Leveled up a couple times & bought some armor. I can see why people have a love/hate relationship with this game. When you finally break through that next barrier it feels like you really accomplished something.

I've been practicing dodge a lot on the 'trash' mobs and am getting better. Locking onto target can be helpful, but really complicated dodge since you just hop & can't roll past your target. Even managed to get The Cleric Beast to half health. Managed to stagger and visceral a brick beast (once) and that was a rush, otherwise I just firebomb them.

Now that you have the shortcut open, I'd say go practice the gun stagger/visceral attack on those 2 brick ogres to the lower left of that lantern.  Also I find the lock on quick step dodge generally better than the roll, being able to parry will help you a lot in this game (though it's not a req, I run some areas with my weapon in two hand mode almost exclusively)

Funny how you realize some things later and feel very stupid. I have been running around the Central location and the sewers and leveling up a bit. I then have read a few strategy articles and realized that I have been clueless in two basic areas. I noticed my pebbles seemed useless so I would run in and attack villager groups and run back and take care of whoever followed me. I now see I have to lock on to people and then throw pebbles. How did I miss that?
I also never realized I could do the stealth kills. I would just run in and attack them before they knew what hit them. I did not even think I could creep in slow and do the R2/R1. I will be unstoppable now until I meet some new creature lol.

I can't figure out how to stealth kill from behind.  How do you do it?  I've gotten the shoot/stun/kill one down, but not the stealth.

They changed it from the old games.  Now you have to hit them with a charged R2 attack from behind which will stagger them and let you use a visceral attack on them.

Got the second boss down, but I had to watch a youtube video of a different tactic than I was using to do it.  Also apparently you need lots of molotovs to beat bosses?  Or maybe just these ones that have beast phases.

Having more fun now that I am not a pushover and learning the lay of the land.  Also that counter gun/attack move is really good.

You don't need them, I never really used them much on bosses.  They can help against certain bosses but are far from a requirement.

First boss tips?  I've leveled a bit, bought the first avail armor set (4 items), have a decent idea of how to play.  Seems like locking onto boss is a bad idea?  Also I am low on bullets, etc.  Do I have to farm so that I have full pots/bullets/molotovs just to beat first boss?

Cleric Beast?  You can kind of hit another one too, but Cleric is meant to be first I think.   You don't really need bullets for CB.  What weapon are you using?  Mostly I'd say to just stay on him and take advantage of regain.

Remember you can usually just run to them past a lot of bad guys once you know where they are and have the shortcuts open, though you may want to kill enemies for bullets/vials if you are low.

The co-op in this game has taken a step back from the Souls games.   There's zero incentive to help people, so I can ring my bell forever and nobody shows up to help me with the boss.    I might as well burn, smash, and then discard the bell over a cliff because that's about how useful it is.
make sure you are closing the game between sessions or disable the new PS4 suspend feature.  It messes with the co-op features, even if you suspended it at title screen.

yeah it's disappointing.  Look how fast Bloodborne's game breaking bug got patched.  I'm off to Axiom Verge for my metroidvania now.  Maybe Ori will be patched after I finish that.

Fantastic game, definitely up there with Dark Souls the first.  There's a real HP Lovecraft feel to the whole thing that not many people are mentioning; more "scary" than the previous titles.  I'm progressing slowly (approaching boss 3 now), but am enjoying the hell out of the time spent.

Spoiler for Hiden:
Working through the workshop area to open up the next cathedral area, I ran across an enemy who had mass tentacles coming out of his face and a giant tube on the top of his head.  He grabbed me, wrapped me up and proceeded to suck my brain out of my head with that big tube.  Lost an insight level on top of the death, but man did that encounter make me jump!  Add the whole "great ones" cosmic god concept being hinted at and this is very much a Lovecraft inspired world.

Yeah I finished it yesterday and I think it's my favorite "Souls" game.  Also the Lovecraft-ness of it continues to get ratcheted up the further and further you go.  Some of the areas get super creepy too.  There's an optional area that was just the worst.   I'm toying with NG+ as well as a new character who is going to go almost full Arcane, health, and endurance.)

Axiom Verge looks tempting but I'll probably be playing Bloodborne for a bit longer.  Already planning on making an Arcane focused character once I beat it with this strength one.

I played for maybe a couple hours last night and so far I'm not super enthused about it.  There's nothing wrong with it, but I wasn't prepared to feel bored by this as if I had just picked up Dark Souls 2 again or something.

I already played Dark Souls 2 as a "roll and dodge" character, barely using shields and never just sitting and blocking, so this doesn't feel super different in that way (and in fact feels worse at first blush, since it seems harder/impossible to dodge roll forward to get behind enemies than I remember).

I'll probably have to give it more time to get deeper in and a better handle on the changes and additions, but right now it isn't giving me much motivation to play it over something else which is surprising.

Also, for a lot of guys generally you're better of side stepping.  With the removal of the simple quick backstab getting behind them isn't generally as worthwhile.  Gun parry is very strong too.
The game, IMO, is also way better than DS2 was.  The lore, world, and monster design are far more interesting.  Combat is a lot tighter, hitboxes are pretty dead on unlike in DS2 where they were kind of wonky.  Hitboxes were a big complaint about DS2.

Still stuck on the first two bosses, I think my locking the camera on the bridge boss caused me to die due to poor camera positioning.  I'm in the process of farming up blood vials and echos to try again, not sure what level I'm at now but still can't upgrade weapons which I figure is locked until I get past at least one of these two.  Father G seemed doable but I ran out of vials and he moves so fast, got him down to half on first try.  Maybe we need to come up with a MP password for GT'ers if we are playing at the same time and want to co-op.  I put forth Gtrend as an option for the password.

Nevermind misread at first.

You need an item before you can upgrade weapons.  Cleric Beast I think is easier to tackle first, what was your starting weapon?

I started with the Hunter Axe and found a Saw Spear but I don't like it too much, low dmg.  I think I need to buy lots of molotov's and upgrade my endurance so I can swing and dodge a bit more.  One thing I might change is to not use the two hand version of the axe so much, uses lots of endurance but then again I don't like having to get so close to the beast to hit it with the one hand version.

Use the axe one handed.  You should be able to trade some blows with him and come out ahead with regain.

Father G gave me some trouble in his 3rd phase, mostly that if he hit me once I was pretty much dead.  The first 2 phases I never really had a problem with.  BSB was a similar deal, and I beat my head against him for over an hour before going exploring and eventually finding some armor with resists that allowed me to take him out.   So far you seem always able to go in at least two directions and choose from 2 different bosses at a time.  Before I take on my fourth boss though I'm off to farm so I can buy this sweet new trick weapon I just unlocked at the store for 20k.

Hint: make sure you equip your consumables and then cycle through them with down on the d pad. It makes using them much easier.
Also, in addition to your equipped items, they added a quick item access menu as well (right click on the touchpad) which is useful for things you use often but not in combat, like the notebook, or hand lantern.

Yeah, basically if I had walked a few steps forward instead of clicking on the shrine I would have found some weapons. I know the game is supposed to be hard, but it wouldn't hurt for them to put in a basic tutorial section. Even the guide doesn't tell you what the stats mean, I had to look that up online.

Well that area is sort of the tutorial, as it's loaded with messengers telling you how to do things on  the ground.   As to the stats, hit R3 on the stats screen and you can got to each and see what it does roughly, this is a big upgrade from some of the earlier Souls games where you couldn't do even that.

Although it seems like it may be headed to PC at some point, and that shouldn't have the same issues.

I don't buy it.  That would make it the first Sony Studio Japan game to ever do so wouldn't it?  This game is a collaboration of From and Studio Japan.

Still only in Quickmatch.  I appreciate the just pick the champion you want to play and go, and blind pick/draft can be contentious, but the result is the lack of any thought going into team comp or champion synergy.  Maybe solo Hero League will have that more once it unlocks.

Also, from playing against him a few times, Illidan seems a bit broken.  I'll have to see what's really going on when he's free to play.

Valla seems pretty good, and I get her because of Reaper of Souls.  Also used gold to get Muradin as I liked him as a brawler and did well with him and he's super cheap.

Um, I don't know, several years ago.  Maybe 2009 or so.  It might have been David Tennant, though I don't pay much attention to the newer doctors.

One episode I remember was something about a little girl drawing monsters and the monsters came to life or something, and it looked bad and was generally wooden over acting.  That sort of thing was funny when it was from the 70's or 80's, but just seemed sad in modern day.  I tried a couple others after that but nothing stuck and it seemed to be not what I was looking for so I chalked it up to the usual nerdery over hype.

It was probably no worse than any SyFy show or anything, I just really tend to hate "low" budget modern TV sci fi.  Even the best of it frequently has to be looked at in rose colored glasses in my opinion.

That episode is generally regarded as one of the worst episodes of new Who.  The script for that one was also a replacement for another episode that never got finished.  So you kind of picked a banger to start with.

Watch Blink, Dalek, The Empty Child/Doctor Dances, Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead, The Doctor's Wife, Vincent and the Doctor.

Man you played arguably the worst one. Demon's has the most memorable areas, and the first Dark has the most cohesive interconnected world.  DS2 is good but the world and level design were a bit weaker than the first one, the combat had some issues as well with some weird hit boxes.

fwiw, my current favorite loadout (I don't tend to equip Exosuit as much as I was, because I really dig the backpack drones in the DLC):

Main weapon:
-SMG-45 Defender submachine gun
*Upgrades: Ammo (Mini-Stun and Armor-Piercing)

Stratagems:
-[DLC] Guard Dog backpack drone (SMG-equipped, auto-targeting, low-flying drone)
-Air Dropped Anti-Tank Mines (fully upgraded anti-personnel mines; think you get 10 drops per stratagem)
-Turrets (3 per mission, per stratagem; I don't like the Railgun Turret usually because one friendly fire hit will take out most Helldivers with one shot; the regular turret might give you a chance  icon_smile)
-Ammo (unless teammates are bringing tons of it or backpack support stuff)

*I don't make much use of the Offense Stratagems because it seems to work better for me to use "drop and forget" or "fire and forget stuff." Targeting a specific position can be tough because some enemies are so fast, though for sure they're great on fixed mission objectives (AA guns, alien bug nests etc.).

*The mines are dangerous in groups because they don't "friend or foe" distinguish if stepped on. I still like them even if I make some stupid placement mistakes sometimes.  icon_smile

Static Field, Napalm and Thunderers Barrage all work well for zone control.  They last a long time and are on cooldown so you can use them as much as you want.   Static Field and Napalm have really low cooldowns maxed, and with the Stratagem perk you can pretty much call them down soon as they expire, if not slightly before.

DLC

Basically 3 classes, but really 3 new outfits, 3 new weapons and 3 new stratagems.

You think that's funny? Try having an APC drop and kill all of you at once  slywink

I forgot about the share functionality on the PS4  crybaby

Not mine, but this video is a good one and along those lines.

If you check out my XB profile, I've posted a couple videos. I am stuck - fell through the ground, and while mashing to try and get out, triggered the save function.

50%, tons done, have most skills unlocked.

WE ARE NOT AMUSED.

This will be brought up in the Metatheory podcast this week, if I'm part of it.

RAAAAAWWWRRR!!!!

Pretty much why I put it down to wait for a patch.  Just seems too risky to play in its current state.  Some people have gotten through it with no issues, but when you hit a bug in this game they are absolutely game breaking and seem like they can cost hours or more of progress.

Nothing this week.   Bloodborne already pre-ordered for next week though.

I would like to say that, Valiant Hearts: The Great War, is a really awesome game!  Played through the first chapter this morning and it's a fun little strategy game, with some historical pics in it.  I'm liking it =)
id say it's more an adventure game.
