1  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Let it Die: Grasshopper games Free to Play Weird Souls on: December 04, 2016, 05:35:16 PM

This is a weird game. It's out now on PS4. It's a free to play singleplayer roguelite with online hooks into other players games. It's 3rd person, and plays roughly like Dark Souls, though a fair bit clunkier. You wander up this tower collecting items and fighting NPCs, looking for gear etc to make it higher and higher. When you die your corpse becomes a Hater, and it wanders the world until you defeat it. Defeated Haters go into your freezer, and then can be sent out into other players worlds where they earn you money. It also looks like you can raid other players worlds to fight their NPCs and steal money from them.

Haters/Raiding explained

Actually no, we didn't as Clinton won the popular vote. Unfortunately that's now how our system is built.

With the friendly fire and all the ways to die, there's just not really any other co-op games like it. FYI I here it's set to be one of the titles to get a PS4Pro patch.
6  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Star Control: Origins on: October 20, 2016, 07:02:57 PM
Yeah, I'm generally not a fan of Stardock, and we've already had a SC sequel from someone other than the SC2 team and that game wasn't great, so I'm really not expecting much from this title unfortunately, even though SC2 is one of my all time favorites.  I'll hold out hope for the original creators to put an Ur-Quan universe sequel together at some point.

Does anyone still consider “open world” to be a good thing?

Surely you jest.

There have been a lot of games that would have been better off with a tighter more focused experience. I think the Batman's are a good example where the first game was by far the strongest, in large part due to its more limited geographic scope.
9  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Combat Racing Games on: September 21, 2016, 10:27:17 PM
It's in early access, but check out GRIP on steam, it's basically a Rollcage clone.
10  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Rive on: September 14, 2016, 02:37:47 PM
This is out now for PS4 and Steam and it's really good. It's sort of a run&gun like Contra, with some shmup parts. Mechanically it's really solid. It can get pretty hard at points, but the checkpointing is very generous so far. There's a story, and its jokes are maybe a little too meta and knowing but it doesn't detract from what is a really polished and excellent game.

Finally picked up Uncharted 2 again after a month or two off and managed to finish it tonight. While it has its moments and is definitely better than part 1, I'm going to express what may be an unpopular opinion and say I'm just not feeling it with this series. I'm going to play through Uncharted 3 and then may or may not pick up part 4.

I realize you probably have the collection, but 3 is not the one to play over 4.

Alright, got the Mark of Conqueror and Mark of the Strong in the Nioh beta. Very much looking forward to the full release, this is like a mashup of Demon's Souls and Ninja Gaiden. There's a lot of depth to the combat here too once you start unlocking weapon skills.

More industrial/metal from 3TEETH, new song and also their first real video.

I keep feeling like I should like these guys more than I do.  All the individual pieces are there, but it just never comes together to be something I really enjoy.  Weird.

I'm like that with Youth Code. Recorded I find them just kind of there, and I really didn't enjoy them live when they opened for FLA and Skinny Puppy. But they seem like a band I *should* like.

I had this on wishlist and then removed it. Certainly the updates EngineNo9 described sound really promising. Maybe some day it's something I'll look into.

I recently decided that even though I've enjoyed some Difficult games like Hyper Light Drifter, for the most part, I'm not one of the Dark Souls Crowd. I don't really like to have my face rubbed in a game's difficulty level like a puppy's face in his poop. I returned a side-scroller Salt & Sanctuary on Steam a while back because literally I couldn't get past the first boss 10 minutes into the game.

I don't know if Necropolis is like that. I just am now actively staying away from Steam games tagged as Difficult. Decided to embrace my inner wimpness.  icon_smile

I thought Hyper Light Drifter was more difficult than the Souls games or Salt & Sanctuary, especially at launch where it had a bunch of finicky issues with the small window on invulnerability frames, enemy combo recovery speeds, or the length of time it took to use a healing item. Maybe you played it after the various balance patches, I don't know how much easier those ended up making it.

Fuck that shit about PS4 getting a 'timed exclusive'. It's CLEARLY that, and not the bullshit stated by the founder:

In a subsequent tweet, he provided a bit of explanation as to why the date changed. He wrote, "We think a global release is best for everyone on PC. Retail forces us to be staggered on PS4."

Sorry, but a lot of people buy digital nowadays (especially PC). Don't tout this 'global release' bullcrap in this day and age. Also, (pissed off) PC purchaser here.

It's 3 days, you're out of your mind. If it was 3 months you might be correct or have a reason to be pissed off, as it is you're coming off as the typical entitled PC asshole.

If you enjoy ultra-gory horror comedy and have even a passing interest in metal, be sure to check out Deathgasm. It's a Shaun of the Dead'ish style spoof where a group of New Zealand metalheads play a black metal song that summons the devil, and carnage - lots and lots lots of carnage - ensues. It's alternately charming, hilarious, and utterly grotesque.

Probably helped that I could name every song on the soundtrack, but I'm guessing that isn't a prerequisite for enjoying it.

Did you watch Todd and the Book of Pure Evil?

Waiting on reviews for Necropolis: A Diabolical Dungeon Delve.  I'm a fan of Harebrained Studios and typically these type of games don't appeal to me but I like the art style and the humor of the game.

Art style and concept look really good, just wondering if it will be too frustrating for me.  I don't mind perma-death as long as some progress is made each run, and it sounds like that's the case in the description.  But hard to say if that will be how it actually plays out.

Isn't this basically trying to be a roguelike Souls game?

I'm sure there's a more recent thread than this but I couldn't find it. What did surprise me is that this thread was made back in 2006! Have the troubles really been going on for as long as all that? I thought 2006 was the glory days. I figured that things took a downturn in the past couple of years. I'm still around but I don't post as much as I used to on any forum but I do spend most of my browsing time on the QT3 and Broken Forum forums and a little bit but not too much on OO.  What's everyone else doing these days?

I played about an hour of it yesterday.  It definitely feels like Limbo to me.  It is well made but I havenít been blown away yet.  Still want to play more though.

I haven't picked it up yet, but everything I've heard has said that the first half is very Limbo-esque and then there are a lot of revelations in the second half.  Still not sure if it's for me, but I'd like to try it at some point.

I'd say it's far more than half that is Limbo-esque. It has a hell of a final act though, but that's maybe 30 minutes of the game. Overall it was quite good but at the same time I think reviewers have over rated it.

I haven't purchased anything on the Steam sale. Thus far it's just a complete meh.

Same here.  There's a few I was interested in, but they're all still to expensive (over $20).

I looked at everything, then looked twice and also did the whole "discovery queue" to see if there was anything interesting that steam had hidden away.  Then I bought Dying Light for a replay on PC and haven't looked back.  I'm on my last week at this job and don't have anything immediately lined up, so that pretty much ends my "backlog growing" stage.  I anticipate I might get time for that hopeless project:  backlog clearing while looking for a new position and cancelling all my medical appointments to the chagrin of my doctors while getting some useful advice from the company representative, such as changing my resume's font and adding some new tech buzzwords in an attempt to sound current.  I will be looking at reviews for the Spiders game and telling my son why we aren't immediately getting another Lego game.  (he still hasn't finished the last few)

Thank you E9.  We took a small break in no-net land and by the time we returned last night, I was too weary to even flip the pc on.

Wow, what a season finale!  So much happened and I love how pretty much everyone got some major plot action.

Spoiler for Hiden:
My favorite scene was Arya's.  Totally caught me off guard, absolutely loved it.  Still I hope they have more planned for her that will make a greater impact to the finale.  Will she be the one who ultimately kills Cersei?

Speaking of which, loved loved loved everything about Cersei in this episode.  She deserves an Emmy.  That dress was freaking fantastic but every expression on her face was awesome, from the thrill of vengeance to the knowing, bitter acceptance of losing her last child, to finally claiming her spot as Queen of Thrones.  Awesome.  I was sad to lose Margeary in such an unceremonious way, but what are ya gonna do?  Also wished she had got to torture Jonathan Pryce's smarmy ass instead of the nun, but beggars can't be choosers.  SHAME!!!  SHAME!!!

Dany + Tyrion moment, brought a tear to my eye when he bows at the end.

All teh shipz, oh my!  With dragon entourage to boot.

Jon Snow heritage reveal.  Honestly it was way too confusing and complicated for me and I had to read the explanations so I wonder how much of an impact it will have for the audience at large.  I suspect it will get more play next season when Dany meets Jon.  Hopefully Bran will spill the beans before they get their incest on.

Last but not least.  Someone please fix Bran's freaking legs.  That poor girl can't be expected to drag his huge ass around the rest of the show!  Thanks for the horse, Uncle Benjen!!  NOT!

Bran spilling the beans will just make it more likely, they were a house known for inbreeding.

I don't think damage is the problem as much as it's speed of target acquisition and target lock.

And stellar they are not.  Sheesh.  Reviews are hovering in the 50% range.

Wow.  That is both amazing and shocking given how anticipated this game has been.  Graphics that are retro, but not up to the last game in the MM series, and worst of all, a gameplay mechanic that is both imprecise and used to justify some tricky jumps.

I find it odd that there are so many complaints about the graphics and art style.  I thought they looked pretty good from the videos I've seen; exactly what I would expect.
I think they are pretty terrible. Also consider this was the concept art in the kickstarter which was much better.

Hololens is too far off with current field of view issues and price. More likely they are partnering with Facebook to make Occulus Rift compatible with the Scorpio.

I have no idea what Twitter thinks, or who you are following, but both the Giant Bomb and GameSpot streams were clearly saying that the Sony conference felt weird, empty and disappointing.

As far as the montage clips, at least in the [email protected] one they showed enough of the game to know what it was, along with the name of the game and the developer so I knew what it all was.

That montage at the end of Sony's was largely a summary of their showing with a few other games thrown in there getting hardly a second of air time.  It felt like a real lost chance to focus on those smaller games, or unknown games.

Sony ended on a hohum note compared to MS with Scorpio.  If Sony ended with Horizon the GB guys would all be buzzing on what a great conference it was. Watching all their Talk Over the Conferences I was a bit surprised to find them so negative post Sony's where as during the conference they were probably the most positive.

I mean Days Gone didn't wow but Scalebound and FFXV both had actual poor showings at the MS conference.

It seems to me that unless you are going the VR route, or really really really want upgraded resolution (4K rumored), staying with the current PS4 is fine.   Im still on the fence for VR, as I haven't seen games/apps that make it a must yet.   Still, looks like the consoles are embracing it.

We'll have to see what the reality of the games is for different platforms.

Even without a 4K TV, if you can get full 1080p resolution at 60fps with higher resolution textures and better post processing on the NEO I would be happy with that over a regular PS4 being slightly downscaled from event the current PC build.

I'm still finding this whole situation offensive.

Meanwhile, the PS4 is still facing a storage issue that needs to be fixed last year.

While they should upgrade the base store model, the PS4 storage is easily upgradeable at a low cost.
