I reinstalled Sword and Poker 2 after playing the new one for a day or two.  It doesn't look as good but it is more fun.
84  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: The economic turmoil thread on: July 29, 2014, 05:40:52 PM
Seemed timely

The middle class is 20 percent poorer than it was in 1984

Nostalgia is just about the only thing the middle class can still afford. That's because median wealth is about 20 percent lower today, in inflation-adjusted dollars, than it was in 1984.

Yes, that's three lost decades.

Now, as you might expect, the middle class has been hit particularly hard by the Great Recession and the not-so-great recovery. It's all about stocks and houses. The middle class doesn't have much of the former, but it does have a lot of the latter. And that's bad news, because, even though the crash decimated both, real estate hasn't come back nearly as much as equities have. So the top 1 percent, who hold more of their wealth in stocks, have made up more of the ground they lost. But, as the Russell Sage Foundation points out, the slow housing recovery means that, in 2013, median households were still 36 percent poorer than they were a decade earlier.

In fact, the housing bust was big enough to erase all the gains the middle class had made the past 30 years—and then some. As you can see below, median households didn't add much wealth between 1984 and 2007. That's what happens when real wages don't increase, and the cost of a middle class lifestyle—housing, healthcare, and higher education—does. So, as Dean Baker points out, when the crisis did come, it devoured these meager gains and left the middle class with 20 percent less wealth than they had when it was "Morning in America."

Of course since it went on Amazon it was just the system so now I have a game to sell.  Actually I had three but the Amazon price for 2 of them is under $10 and I don't see why anyone would pay be enough to get a bit of profit and still cover shipping so I think I will just take them to the store and trade them in.

So the one game:

Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD - $25

Trailer for part 3

Got to say it looks too somber and depressing for me.  I have thought that through the whole series though.  I don't think Jackson captured the child's adventure story part of the hobbit.

Gaystation 4 up for auction

In celebration of pride week in Sweden, retailer Webhallen is auctioning off a customized PlayStation 4 to support The Swedish Federation for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer Rights (RFSL). Designated the "Gaystation edition," the auction for the $400 console is already up to $1,630 (as of this writing).

"For many young people, the world of games will become a refuge to escape the taunting or worse of real life. On Webhallen, we are gamers in heart and mind, and are keen that as many as possible have the opportunity to feel welcome and enjoy the world's largest and fastest growing interest: video games," notes the Webhallen post, with #thisisforthegaymers.

The site also notes that 100% of the proceeds will go to RFSL Newcomers, which works with asylum seekers, undocumented migrants and new LGBTQ arrivals under that division.

It looks appropriately dark, unhappy, and depressing for a post-apocalyptic world.  I have no desire to see it but it seems to fit what one would expect.

I have been loving the beta on the PS3.  Watching a comparison with the PS4 almost makes me want to get a PS4 just for this but I have several games to finish on the PS3 (someday) so I can wait.  There isn't anything else for the PS4 that really gets me excited.

However Destiny has been pretty great.

Friend me up on the PS3 (Farley3k) if anyone is playing it.

Actually, from the same user:
...the PS3 still sees it as a generic controller. So sixaxis, vibration and PS button still won't work

And some games like GTAV still don't support it.  Not sure half-assed support is really worth it to me at this point, but I do hate the PS3 controller.

I got one and have been using it for Destiny and Ni No Kuni so far I love it.  The lack of a PS button is only annoying when I want to quit a game.

I have tried the PS3 controller, the Mad Catz, and Logitech ones as well and it is the best feeling of all of them.  So while I don't like some parts it is the best I think I will find.

just saw this last night - technically, the most impressive Marvel film yet. nice resolution, good use of 3D in parts.

otherwise, your enjoyment of this hinges on your tolerance of a nearly non-existent plot, many cliches, quite a few dorky moments and a film that, overall, seems to be trying to make a parody of itself.

I am so going to love this movie!  smile

Microsoft to shutter Xbox Entertainment Studios

Following the 18,000 layoffs Microsoft announced this morning, the tech giant has also confirmed reports that it will be closing its Xbox Entertainment Studios division within the next few months.

Though the closure of Xbox Entertainment Studios will drastically reduce Microsoft's plans for original Xbox programming, corporate vice president of Microsoft Game Studios Phil Spencer claims that a few key projects will live on. "Xbox will continue to support and deliver interactive sports content like 'NFL on Xbox,' and we will continue to enhance our entertainment offering on console by innovating the TV experience through the monthly console updates," Spencer wrote in a statement to Recode.

According to Variety, it also appears likely that the Ridley Scott-produced Halo prequel Halo: Nightfall will survive the death of Xbox Entertainment Studios, both because it's quite a ways into development already and because Microsoft is currently in negotiations with Showtime to broadcast the series on premium cable alongside its Xbox debut.

One I didn't see on the list but one which will be out next week

80 Days

Inkle, the studio behind the excellent interactive gamebook adventures Sorcery! and Sorcery! 2, have a new game hitting the App Store next week called 80 Days. Based on the Jules Verne classic Around the World in Eighty Days, you'll follow Phileas Fogg and his valet Passepartout as they try to make it around the world in an alternate-history, steampunk version of the late 1800s.

There are a multitude of paths you can take, as well as a variety of different vehicles for you to travel in. As with the Sorcery! games, the story unfolds in bits of choose-your-own-path dialogue. You're free to choose your own route around the world, and in a very cool twist there will actually be a live feed of the paths other players are going via an in-game 3D globe.

Framed and Plunder Pirates are already games I have on my watch list on TouchArcade (I love watch lists.  I like just getting a little note that my games is released, updated, or has a price drop)

Warhammer 40k: Space WolfExiles, The Witness, Aralon: Forge and Flame, Gabriel Knight: Sins of our Fathers - 20th Anniversary Edition all look pretty great as well.

I really need to finish some of my backlog....

Just came to post that

Looper's Rian Johnson Is The Director Of Star Wars: Episode VIII

He will also reportedly be the scriptwriter of Episode IX, but not the director. Man, not only is Disney is getting their Star Wars biz together quickly, they're hiring some real scifi talent with Johnson, Gareth Edwards and Josh Trank. It's getting immensely difficult not be excited about the future of Star Wars.

Civilization Revolution 2 announced

Sid Meier's Civilization Revolution 2 was revealed this morning... for iOS. Sneaky, sneaky, we know, but had we noted the platform in the headline you wouldn't have even read these elegant prose and jumped straight to the comments with rage.

Well, now that we do have your attention, the game will be playable on all relatively current iOS devices beginning July 2 (next week!). It is "coming soon" to Android devices, according to publisher 2K Games. No word yet on Windows phones, Ouyas or NGage.

"The game will combine the core tactical elements of the series with intuitive controls and a friendly user interface - designed specifically for mobile gamers on touch-pad devices," noted 2K Games.

The original Civilization Revolution for HD consoles tilted the strategy series on its side, retaining many of its core elements, but elegantly streamlining it for games that could be completed in a few hours. The game eventually made its way to mobile devices in a much less pretty package.
