82  Gaming / Portable Gaming & Apps / [ios] Flappy Bird is no more on: February 10, 2014, 01:15:58 PM
The Flappy Bird creator has pulled the game from the app store

This is a strange story for an otherwise normal Saturday, but apparently Dong Nguyen, creator of the international super hit Flappy Bird [Free], has had enough of everything that comes with being an overnight sensation and is going to take the game down from the App Store. He apologizes to Flappy Bird players, and states via Twitter "22 hours from now, I will take 'Flappy Bird' down. I cannot take this anymore."

I guess I don't understand what he can't take.  Is there just a ton of emails?  Can he be pestered in other ways?

Lego Movie is a great spoof of summer movies. And a great summer movie.

Seems like a winner.

87  Gaming / Portable Gaming & Apps / [ios] Broken Sword 5 on: February 06, 2014, 08:53:58 PM
Pocket Gamer certainly didn't like Broken Sword 5

But Revolution has gone too far, and made a game that practically crawls along to its unsatisfying conclusion, which manages to take in bad puzzles, poor attempts at humour, and terrible bugs along the way. Here's hoping part two isn't such a washout.

I haven't picked it up myself but I think this may convince me to just wait for a sale it at all.

Jesse Eisenberg Will Be Lex Luthor in 'Batman vs. Superman

Out of nowhere this afternoon, Warner Bros. Pictures has announced two new cast members for the recently delayed 2016 release of Batman vs. Superman, or whatever the sequel to last summer's Man of Steel will be called, and they are surprising to say the least. First off, The Social Network and The Double star Jessie Eisenberg has been set to play Superman's arch nemesis Lex Luthor and Die Hard with a Vengeance bad guy Jeremy Irons has been slated to play Bruce Wayne's trusty butler Alfred in the film from director Zack Snyder. These casting choices are out of left field, and neither name has been rumored for either role.
90  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Amazon Prime price hike coming? on: January 31, 2014, 04:33:26 PM
I get a lot of value from Prime between free shipping, Instant Video stuff, etc.  I would probably pay.

Heck sending all my Christmas gifts around the country alone probably costs as much as the Prime membership.

94  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Amazon To Start Charging Tax In My State on: January 28, 2014, 09:38:08 PM
I am not excited about it.... icon_lol  But I like paying sales tax a lot more than federal taxes.

And it isn't even about the "mom and pop" business that are being run out of business.  Many of them suck and deserve it (really who has a used book store only open from 10-4 Mon to Friday.  Do they really think that is when people will be out shoping the most?!)

It is about the local services.  I like my fire department, police department, and schools.  I see a value to them every day so I don't mind knowing my money is going to them.   I feel like that is a fair way to raise money for what we all agree we need (and if you are one of those folks who don't believe we need a publicly funded fire department....well that is another discussion.)  So it is great that sales tax will be going back to them.

Yeah when we got it last year (CA) I was pretty bummed but what can you do.  The fact is it does make the competition more fair for companies like Best Buy and Target, not to mention the last remaining traditional book stores.  Still, even with the taxes, with free Prime shipping I'll still tend to go with Amazon out of convenience - and of course their pricing is almost always the best unless there's some sort of special/exclusive sale.

I don't get this.  (Not to pick on you personally at all)

Since sales tax stays in your local community wouldn't people like to pay sales tax over other taxes?  The sales tax is actually one of the most obvious taxes we pay.  You can see people working to fix the pot holes, you can hear the fire truck going down the street, etc.  It isn't nearly as abstract at "helping sorgum farms in Maine" or that kind of thing from the federal budget.  Now that doesn't mean it can't be spent on stupid stuff just that we can see the stupid stuff easier.  smile

I think the reason it isn't a Final Fantasy game is so that people don't get confused.  Really if it was Final Fantasy 15 (16?) and then you saw Final Fantasy 13 - Lightning Returns next to it at the store wouldn't you be confused?  I would.  They seem like completely different types of games.  Heck they are different types of games so I can see how if Square decided "Final Fantasy" would now be what we see with Lightning Returns they needed a new name for the classic Final Fantasy type of game.

101  Gaming / Portable Gaming & Apps / Re: Bravely Default coming to North America on: January 23, 2014, 09:42:25 PM
It tosses you in with little explanation I will admit.

I was dying like crazy until I stopped trying to level up the Freelancer job.  Once I switched my fighters to ninjas or valkyries fights got a lot easier.

As for spells remember you can buy any spell but you can't use a spell until you are a high enough level in the right job.  So a 1st level white mage can case cure but to cast cura you need to be a 3rd level white mage.  That isn't really explained but the names are similar to other FF games so it stays a bit consistent.

Impressions from Sundance by the folks

In this vibrant and ever-expanding world of cinema, it's rare that we ever get to experience something truly incredible in its concept and execution, something so amazing that it pushes an entire genre to new heights. That happened at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival on Tuesday night, as Gareth Evans' premiered his 2-1/2 hour sequel The Raid 2, and I believe he's pulled off something akin to The Dark Knight of action movies. It is a sequel that is much bigger, more ambitious, and considerably more epic in scope than the first, yet exceeds all expectations and achieves levels of legend in terms of martial arts action intertwined with story.

In my years of writing about cinema, it's only every so often that I get to experience something as historic as the screening that I sat through at Sundance on Tuesday. It will be an event of legend in years to come, for reasons that go beyond just the film itself. The cut of The Raid 2 that Gareth Evans screened at Sundance was a freshly finished 148-minute version that the MPAA has not had a chance to look at, meaning it was as brutal, relentless and insanely violent as it could possibly be. This film isn't for everyone, and I heard about many walk-outs from people who just couldn't handle the "disgusting" level of violence. But for those that can sit through this, it's an experience unlike any before, perhaps one of the best action movies ever made.
103  Gaming / Portable Gaming & Apps / Re: 'Baldur's Gate II: Enhanced Edition' for iOS Submitted to Apple for Approval on: January 21, 2014, 04:37:02 PM
I saw that comment too and I am still trying to figure out what is IAP.  The only thing I can find with Google and "baldur's gate 2 iap" is this story and quote

Baldur’s Gate II: Enhanced Edition coming soon to iPad… with IAPs
Wednesday, January 8, 2014

Baldur's Gate 2 Enhanced Edition iPad Android tablet screenshotWe were keeping our finger crossed when Baldur’s Gate II: Enhanced Edition was submitted to Apple a month ago, but it didn’t help. The game was refused by Apple’s submission team once or twice, but according to Beamdog’s Trent Oster, the wait is almost over. Apparently, the game’s in-app purchases have been approved and… wait, what?

Yeah, it turns out Baldur’s Gate II: Enhanced Edition will feature IAPs on iPad and (eventually) Android tablets. This honestly isn’t a huge surprise, as we’ve predicted something like this will happen way back in August when it was announced that the remake will feature four new characters with unique quest lines, but it’s still a shame that a $15 mobile game will have paywalls.

Which would seem to say that the original game/story is there for $15 but you can get 4 new characters with unique quests for IAP.

I was reading this article on TouchArcade about upcoming games on ios and wondered if people here had anything they were excitedly waiting for next year.

Their list:

Dungeon Keeper
Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft
Mines of Mars
Out There
Final Fantasy VI
Final Fantasy Agito
Warhammer 40,000: Space Wolf
Fright Fight
Battleheart Legacy

The big things I see missing are FTL and Baldur's Gate 2.  I am very excited about those two.

What is on your list?

119  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Orbis. aka PlayStation 4? The rumors are put to rest. on: December 19, 2013, 10:11:40 PM
This is pretty neat

Celebrating gaming firsts across the PS4's launch line-up, First to Greatness tasks gamers in the PS4 community with completing 64 challenges in 11 different games, including Assassin's Creed IV, Killzone, Knack, Injustice, and DC Universe Online, to name a few. The challenges themselves run the gamut, ranging from completing a no-scope kill with the AMR in Blacklight: Retribution, to catching a wink from Lady Liberty in LEGO Marvel Super Heroes. Some are fairly simple, while others are extremely tough to pull off
The first player to complete a challenge, capture it on video using the DualShock 4's share button, and submit their clip gets featured in the top slot for each achievement. That's certainly one way to earn some heavy-duty gloating rights among your online pals.

They are kind of fun to watch and I don't even have a PS4.
