2687  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Thinking of buying a PSP - what should I know? on: September 01, 2005, 08:13:45 PM
I think the critical mass of games I want to play has been reached with the PSP so I will be picking one up.  However it seems like a complicated system so I had some questions.

1. I would like to play Sam and Max (it is sitting in my basement on CD-ROM so I do own it).  Do I need to be careful which PSP I buy?  Meaning do new ones sold have updated firmware?  Which firmware should I make sure the machine has?

2. How big of a memory stick do I need?  It comes with a 32 meg one but I bet that is too small.

3. What is the best price?  I have seen them as low as $230 on Ebay for new ones but is that too risky?

4. What else should I know?

Thanks
2688  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Level 5 (Dark Cloud, DQ8) announces Rogue Galaxy on: August 31, 2005, 08:30:19 PM
Just watched the 8 minute trailer.  It looks very good but I really hope they don't try to throw everything and the kitchen sink into the game.

I really felt like Dark Cloud 2 tried to do to much.  Camera, world building, item creation, combat, story, etc., etc.  I know that some people really love an RPG with a ton to do but I get tired of having so many things to do.
2689  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Are you one of them? on: August 31, 2005, 02:36:00 PM
I was going to say I was since I stood outside Best Buy at like 5 in the morning to buy a PS2 on launch day but then I realized that was the only time I did that.

I bought my Xbox. GBA and Cube used and I just bought a DS because the price dropped.

I guess I am not one of those people.  I am willing to wait which is my plan with the 360.

I can't find any information or reviews of this though so I am suspicious.  Anyone have an links to actual information?

It's not even close.  Plus, I saw an ungodly demo of Unreal Tournament 3 running on PS3 software.  It was jaw dropping.

This is all coming from someone who owns an Xbox and has never owned a Playstation.

So? The 360 can run the Unreal 3 engine fine. Guilty Gear looks as good as anything out there right now.

Yes it does.  Of course Sony has a 6 month window for improved graphics, CPU, etc.

It will be more powerful so it will look better.  That is the simple fact of putting it out later.  Did the Xbox look better than the PS2?

Why are you buying an XBox 360, a game console designed around Hi Def, Online gaming and wireless technology, if you intend to use 10% of the functionality?  Why not just keep your XBox, or better yet a PS1?

Games.  I can't play Oblivion on the Xbox.

And, I may be wrong but won't games look better on the 360 - even without a HD TV?  I can't believe that without the HD TV they will only look as good as the current Xbox games.

I don't sit on my couch but right in front of my TV, so I don't need a wireless controller.

But will all of those things be true in five years (or ten years, if Sony has its way)?  Accessories and the like don't really come down in price, so as HDTVs become cheaper and standard, those cables may be in your future.  I wouldn't say you're stupid.  Just maybe not prudent.

Also, you're going to ruin your eyes.  Sit on the couch.

Is the expected life cycle of the 360 really 5 years?  The Xbox launched Nov. of 2001...so 4 years.... Why would the development cycle slow down?

Downloadable Content. That is what makes the HD worth owning. I post on another forum with a developer from Bethesda, he pointed out that Morrowind was the only game that really optimized the HD for the Xbox. He also said that buying the 360 with out the HD was stupid, just because of the value of the total package. I can't say that I disagree.

I posted this on GWJ but I think it fits here too.

Why am I stupid for not getting the $400 bundle?

I don't play on Live, so I don't need the headset or the wireless ethernet.
I don't have an HD TV, so I don't need the cables.
I don't sit on my couch but right in front of my TV, so I don't need a wireless controller.

The only advantage for me is HD caching. Well how much will that improve my life? $100 worth? $60 worth (since I will have to get a memory card)

I don't think I am a complete idiot - I think the $400 bundle sucks for anyone not playing on line.
2697  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / [X360] Good News! Oblivion will NOT require the hard drive. on: August 18, 2005, 02:27:37 AM
I wasn't worried about Oblivion.  I figure it, like every other game won't need the HD - which makes the HD useless - $100 extra for a memory card.

But only for streaming and saving games right?  I guess that is something but then all you really get with the HDD is faster loading and not having to buy a memory card...

Stores/Salesmen DO NOT have any incentive to push the more expensive package. They make pennies on the complete set. The parents can come back later to buy the accessories which they make more of a margin on. Remember, many clueless parents actually trust the salesman advice in their local mall Gamestop/EB.

Parents don't understand gaming.  At Christmass, with a ton of other expensive stuff to buy, food to buy, etc. they will pick the cheapest way.

After all they will both play all the games so the extra stuff is just that - extra.
2700  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Xbox 360 Pre-Release Thread on: August 17, 2005, 02:40:44 PM
I also think this will help/encourage hackers.

With an optional HD you have to make it really easy to swap.  Sure it wasn't a big deterent but having to pop open your Xbox and do some digging to get the HD out to swap it did stop some folks from modding.  Now that is gone becuase the HD has to be swapable easily and without voiding the warrenty.

So now they just need to come up with a mod-chip and they can hack the whole thing.

And just generally having two versions will encourage hacking becuase people want to buy the cheaper version.  Then if a mod-chip is only $60 or so (what they are for the Xbox) then they can get a lot more from the 360 without having to buy the expensive version!  Yeah

I will be waiting to see how the system is cracked to take a larger HD.   If they hackers work fast you can have a $299 system and put in a 120 GB drive for only $60 more instead of $100 for a 20GB one!

On a side note does this now put MS in the same catagory for gamers as Sony?  I remember when the specs were tossed around for the PS3 that many gamers said they didn't believe them because Sony was know for lying.  Now it appears MS wants a bit of that reputation as well.

My only complaint right now about Steam is the forced updates - or disconnect.

Last time I wanted to play HL2 it had been 6 months or so since I last fired it up.  Between the updates to Steam and the updates to HL2 it was almost half an hour before I could just fire up my game.

I never had any crashes with HL2 - I didn't need the patches!  But I couldn't opt out of that without having to kill my internet connection.  That is just stupid.

I enjoyed it, but I can appreciate the bad quest design and slow-pacing comments.  I think the Chinese mythology setting made up for some of the negatives for me.  While Kotor 1 & 2 had their share of boring fed ex quests, Jade Empire seemed to have more.

I played through JE twice, and found myself skipping the side quests, or just sticking to the main storyline quests the second time.  While I really liked JE, the pacing is rough for the first half of the game.  But, I had the same opinion of Kotor 1 also.  The cast of characters is ok, but doesn't really get too deep (other than a cool love triangle that develops later in the story - if you're playing a male).  The pacing picks up considerably the latter half of the game.

That pretty well sums up the game for me.  It wasn't great but I enjoyed it because of the setting and the art.

I'm really glad you're happy with the new gadget, though Ron!  There is nothing like a new toy to play with, even if it's for work!

Don't sweat it.  Sales of PDAs have been dropping for years.  Pretty soon they will be gone.

2715  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince Spoiler Thread on: July 27, 2005, 05:51:58 PM
1. RAB.  I think it has to be Regulus.  J.K. has said in interviews that there won't be any major new characters introduced in book 7 *and* that we can figure out who RAB is from what we have read so far (which kinda rules out a new character)

My opinion - it is Regulus.  Since Harry owns the house now and all the possesions it will be easy to get that Horcrux...except for the their Harry met in HBP!  He will have actually stolen and sold the locket which will make it tougher for Harry to find.

2. Dumbledore - dead or just playing an elaborate practical joke?   I vote for dead even though I don't like it.  I think he needs to be dead to really leave Harry alone.  Harry now has no parents, no god-father, and no surogate father.  He must face Voldermort alone.

Of course the evidence of him not being dead is compelling.

Stolen from this good thread

Quote
This is the big clue. Think really carefully about the trap guarding the locket. That part of the book sails by quickly, and then we immediately get into the whole Dumbledore dying thing and never come back to it. There are some important things in that chapter, though, that never get adequately explained. Dumbledore tells Harry that "Voldemort wouldn't want to kill anyone who gets to this island;" he'd want to keep them alive long enough to find out how they did it. That makes sense, and the nature of the potion in the basin--which incapacitates the drinker--supports the theory.

But here's the thing that nagged me: If that's the case, then what was the purpose of the "no water" enchantment? Why would Voldemort set up his trap so that a horde of undead killing machines spring to life after the intruder has already been incapacitated?

Voldemort must have realized, like Dumbledore, that two people working together could get around his trap. One person drinks the potion and becomes incapacitated, but then the other could just grab the locket and drag the first person out of there. So he added a twist: whoever drank the potion would be overcome with an overriding need for water, and the only way to get water is to disturb the lake. That wakes up the Inferi, and ensures that any helper not incapacitated by the potion never makes it off the island. But that's also problematic, because the Inferi are mindless killing machines. Dumbledore points out that they would attack even Voldemort if he triggered his own trap (which is why the boat was there). And there's not much point in incapacitating the potion drinker only to let him get torn to bits by Inferi.

The solution, of course, is simple. The potion that Voldemort used to bait the trap doesn't merely incapacitate, it also protects the drinker from harm. At least until they are released from the effects of the potion.

Knowing this, let's hazard another guess: Dumbledore knew about this Horcrux--and the trap guarding it--long before he and Harry went to fetch it.

Very interesting theory!

3. Snape good or bad?   I think the simple fact is that J.K. has crafted the story such that we cannot know for sure.  We can argue/debate/and guess but she has done such a great, great job of setting up this question that we can't know.

Personally I think he is good.  I think he rushed up to the tower to make sure that Draco didn't kill Dumbldore.  I think he killed DD to cement his place in the Death Eaters so he could get closer to Voldermort.

We see him continuing to teach Harry right up until the end - From page 603: "Blocked again and again and agin until you learn to keep your mouth shut and your mind closed, Potter!"

The argument that they didn't kill him becuase Voldermort wanted to doesn't hold much water because they could have just knocked Harry out and taken him to the Dark Lord.

So he must have had another reason for not killing and not kidnapping Harry.

Hence I think he is going to be the ultimate double/tripple/quadruple agent!

Now all we have to do is wait a few years to find out!
