2681  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Getting A rank in Valkyria Chronicles sucks the fun from the game on: December 15, 2009, 04:28:09 PM
I started replaying this and am again struck by how working to get the A rank really makes the game suck.  1.  It is all about speed so you never get to do good tactics, 2. you have to save a lot in case the enemy gets lucky shots.  When you don't use tactics and you reload every time something doesn't go perfect .... well that isn't a fun SRPG to me.

Still loving the game though.  I just remember why I gave up trying for A rank and just redid skirmishes for XP and money.

Load screens are superior for one simple reason- the elevator rides were hard-coded to last for a defined period of time.  They didn't just end when you arrived at your destination.  In ME1, if you use fast travel in the Citadel instead of the elevator you'll find that the loading is much quicker.

Which was also another reason loading it on the hard drive didn't help.  No matter what those elevators were going to take that long.

Question for you guys.  Wha tis your opinion on the elevator stuff for ME1?  I fully recognize it was a load screen of sorts, except you got dialogue in it.  Now they are replacing it with a load screen.  Am I the only one who would prefer some entertainment during my load screen instead of just a static load screen?  Seems people bitched and now we have something worse.

I would think they could also make it load faster with load screens.  I would be willing to trade speed for conversation.

Good place to look....

When reading the RPGamer review I came across this bit about difficulty

To progress through the game's main storyline, it will take most around thirty hours on normal difficulty. The normal mode is a cakewalk for most of the game, but some bosses have had their difficulty ramped up just slightly from Tactics A2's predecessor. Hard mode is a good bit more difficult, especially to start with, but mostly just requires a longer playtime to complete.

So maybe I will crank it up.
2690  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Final Fantast Tactics A2: Grimoire of the Rift advice on: December 04, 2009, 07:44:32 PM
I just picked this up and I am wondering if I should switch to Hard.  So far the battles (only 3 so far) have been laughably easy.  The kind of easy where "I could win if I just used my white mage for attacking and no one else" easy.   Does it get harder of should I start again on Hard?  I am not into terribly hard games (look at my Uncharted 2 whining) but I am fairly good with SRPGs because I have played so many over the years.

Also any tips for starting out?

No, to get arrogant pricks off your case and to get to wear jeans.

Really if you were going to give $100 a year why not save $20 for December so you get people off your back (and in this case get the perk of wearing jeans?)  It is the same $100 no matter when you give it right?

Why?  Why should one feel motivation to give more during the holidays than any other time of year?  Shouldn't charity be appreciated, not demanded or bullied?  Charities should be happy that we give, not worrying about when we give.

Charities need donations year-round, so I fail to see why holding out until December to make donations benefits anyone except those who for some reason believe that it is better to give in December than any other time of year and judge others because of that belief.

1. Charities are in the business of getting donations and if they find that a certain time of year brings out more donations I think it is their job to pursue that money.

2. I have never heard of a charity which wasn't happy if you gave at a different time but since they can't staff kettles year round it is in the best interest of their business to do it when they would reap the most benefit.

3. No one (here) is saying holding out till December is better.  It isn't so perhaps the reason you can't see it is because it doesn't exist.

Ah, annual holiday charrorism attacks.  Being accosted by Salvation Army bell-ringers outside of the grocery store, being chastised for not contributing money to fundraisers, all necessary parts of every holiday season.

Yet the donations you make throughout the rest of the year, not needing a holiday or ringing bell to motivate generosity, are quickly forgotten or disregarded because everyone else is giving right now

If you don't give when it is convenient for others, you're asked why you hate America.  It doesn't matter what you've given the rest of the year, only during the holiday season because that is apparently the only time it counts.

Wouldn't it take like one year to learn to save some of that charity for December?

I finished last night and after cranking down the difficulty I was able to enjoy it more.  I probably just stink at combat but it got to be a bit much to me.  After I lowered it to easy I felt much more like it was a movie where bullets are zinging around and our hero is just lucky.

All in all one of the most beautiful games I have played but I think I liked Batman:AA better in terms of gameplay.
2696  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Uncharted 2: Among Impressions Threads [Hide the spoilers well!] on: December 02, 2009, 10:27:54 PM
Oh did I say that...oh...well I meant something a bit less drastic.  I was pretty frustrated.

And after watching a couple videos on Youtube it is a lot easier on easy.  Can you switch on the fly?  I think if I take down the difficulty I might not mind the combat that much (or at least enough to finish)

In addition, he's Nathan Drake and he wants to find the stone regardless. I think that's perfectly plausible, and to be honest, I didn't even think about it while playing the game.

Yes- that's a key point.  For most of the game, Drake's motivation isn't stopping Lazarevich, but getting the stone himself first so it will make him rich.  It isn't until toward the end of the game where Drake ceases being concerned for his personal gain.

....I can tolerate that but I am still annoyed that he opened the gates to Shambala. smile

Do you honestly sit through every action movie and nitpick everything, or do you just enjoy it if it meets a certain level of plausability?  Because Uncharted meets a lot of that plausibility requirement, more so than many movies, tv shows, or games.  It harkens back to the classics of the action adventure genre, and if these are the problems you have with the story, I'm not sure how you've enjoyed any action/adventure media for the past 25 years.

We could nit pick all the media for the past 25 years but I think it is just opinion.  For me Uncharted doesn't meet that certain level of plausibility for you it does.

And ye I do sit though most movies and nitpick.  I am pretty picky.  I also wasn't too bad with Uncharted until the game became a shooter at the end.  It had really devolved in my opinion starting with Chapter 22.  It became almost exclusively shooting which as I said it my least favorite part of the game.  I am sure having to put up with more and more of the part I like least is also making my opinion drop of the game as a whole.

I am in Chapter 25 and I just hate it.  It has turned into the parts of Uncharted I like the least - straight gun fights.  Since it is near the end I guess they wanted to make it epic but it just feels silly and frustrating.

The game really missed something with me.  I am really frustrated with the story - you want to stop Lazarovich? Break the freaking dagger in the early chapters!  Heck stop opening every door!  There is no benefit to Drake solving all the puzzles.  If he would just stop the enemy would be defeated.  Especially since the dagger is so important to many of the puzzles - simply smashing it would stop him.  They needed to be two competing adventurers or at least have someone competent on the bad guys side.

So many other parts are just silly too.  The truck chase.  I have a great idea to stop Drake - stop your truck when he is on it.  Get out and let the other guys shoot the heck out of him.  Why would you keep driving?  It also seems a bit unrealistic that the mercenaries would continually shoot at each other.  Your team is driving the truck - don't shoot RPGs at it.  The train was fun but come on if you shoot even the last car off the tracks it will pull down other cars.  They are connected and they weigh a lot.

The arbitrary nature of jumps and killing is also frustrating.  If it is a jump they don't want Drake to make he can't but then 10 seconds later he can make a far longer jump because that is in the script.  I unloaded 3 clips into the final boss on the train and he was fine until Chloe shot him once! And while I can be shot at by hundreds of guys only Flynn's magic gun can actually hurt me.  I know it is for the story but it feels so blatantly fake that is instantly pulls me out of the game.
2702  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Walk me through setting up Exchange server on: December 02, 2009, 03:27:07 PM
We are moving to MS Exchange from Postfix on the Mac and I wanted a basic walkthrough.  I have the server setup with Server 2008 and it is ready,  we are using AD and I know I will need to create accounts for everyone who will get mail before I install Exchange, and I believe there is no automated way to transfer email from the old system to Exchange (or at least no free way) so for that I intend to simply setup both accounts on my Outlook and copy the messages from one to another.  It will be labor intensive but we only have 60 employees and most have tiny amounts of mail.

Here is my plan

1. Install Exchange giving it the same name as the old server -
2. Go into the DNS servers and change where the MX record points to point at the new server.
2a figure out Outlook Web Access and get that setup through the firewall.
3. At that point I think mail should go to the new server fine so new mail is taken care of.
4. Go to the old server and change its name to something like
5. Go into Outlook and set it up so it checks users A's old mailbox and new mailbox
6. Copy all messages from old mailbox to new.
7. Repeat steps 5 and 6 for all users.

To me that seems like it will work.  It gets the Exchange server up and getting mail from anyone who sends to current addresses ASAP which is important and then I can work over a week or so on moving all the old mail over.

So what am I missing?  What is going to come and bite my butt?

He knows that it is a game and that there is certainly no gains outside of getting new weapons that will make him a better human etc etc.

This is what I thought when you posted at first.  If that is what makes him enjoy the game .... well that is his choice.

Anyone who thinks that an average citizen could get away canceling 3 meetings with the police is delusional.  Yes it may be within a person's rights but they would be arrested (I am sure it wouldn't even take 30 seconds to come up with a charge).   This "right" to ignore police is entirely fictional unless you are a celebrity.

I will try that when I get home.

The annoying thing is that before this I used component which went through a switch box shared with the 360 and the sound was fine.  I thought I would be saving myself a hassle of having to get up and manually flip the switch but instead it is more of a headache.  Technology!
2715  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: PS3 HDMI - Help on: November 27, 2009, 06:09:51 PM
Derail for my own problem.

I got an HDMI cable for my PS3 and everything is fine for picture but the sound has to be cranked way, way up to be heard and there is a ton of white noise in it.  The sound is going from the PS3 via HDMI to the TV and then out the TV to the stereo receiver.  The 360 uses component to go to the TV but instead of the sound going through the TV to the receiver it goes straight from the 360 to the receiver.   The Tivo does the same thing.   The sound is normal on both of those.  If they are at say 25% volume the PS3 is at 75% to get the same volume - with the white noise too.  Is this because the sound is going through the TV and somehow being degraded?

Is there a way for the PS3 to use HDMI for video but something else for audio?  And how could I do that?
