I am interested after checking out this tread and watching some videos.  One big question though - can I turn off the music?  It is so annoying I want to jam a pencil to stop the suffering.  I can turn off the sound altogether but I do like the sound effects in games usually.

Great news for those of us without a PS3. I loved the game but it wasn't worth keeping the whole system for it.

Good review.  Ultimately I started to dislike the game due to the fact that in every single battle one character would get poisoned - and poison did a ton of damage - which meant frequent trips to town but I agree with most of the review.  Maybe it was that the characters were that interesting to me so I didn't really care.

I buy stuff only when I have the cash for it.  That's how I beat credit card debt.

Since most credit card debt and most bankrupcies in the US are from medical bills I find your statement really lame.

"Oh! I broke my leg.  Well I can't afford to pay cash right now so I will just ignore it!"

or in my case "Your newborn son is in critical condition!" "Oh could you tell me how much that will end up costing so I can see if I have enough cash?"

I'm still trying to figure out how you use these free online productivity apps when you are on a plane with no Internet access or somewhere similar.  I guess I am not the intended audience as my company would buy the real version that I could travel around with.

Those situations are becoming more and more rare.  Heck even on some flights you can get Internet if you pay.  Cloud computing is a bit forward looking - to a time when the Internet is available everywhere.

I am not impressed with these videos.  1. where is the HUD?  2. How do I choose abilities/spells to use? 3. Is it pausable at all?  It looked more like some action game like Dynasty Warriors or a smashem up like The Warriors.

There will be a copy available at Gamefly soon, because I am done.  It is a pretty fun game but some of the flaws keep me from wanting to pick it up to play.  I think the health thing is dumb, the alchemy is dull, and the dungeon layouts are awful.  It has moments of a lot of fun but eventually I just got a bit bored.

I have played about 10 hours now and I have a major love/hate relationship with this game.  In many ways it is just bad design.  Menus are hard to go through, you have to constantly go in and out, the item creation while certainly complex is actually pretty simple and not very exciting.  I have gotten far, far better stuff from random drops.  It is just plain stupid to charge 100g to heal HP and MP.  I just have my caster cast heal until they are out of spells, rest for free to get back MP, then have them cast again, repeat.  So I never pay to heal HP no one would - so why make it cost something?  It is just dumb.  And while the game is hard at first now at level 3 it is a breeze.  I don't know if I simply made a team with really high agility or what but I almost never get hit.  So I just hold down X for battles.  It is kind of dull.

Yet there is something that keeps me playing.  I like the exploration aspect a lot.  I also love the art style.  And there is something fun about collecting crap.

All in all I don't know why I keep playing but I really can't seem to stop.  It is addictive...but like cheetos or popcorn I feel sort of unsatisfied afterwards.
2699  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Mass Effect or Bioshock - Father's Day Clearance Buy on: June 19, 2009, 08:31:48 PM
I never could finish Mass Effect.  I hated the combat.  It was bad so I turned down the difficulty but then it just got boring with many fights ending almost before I saw the enemy (teammates were good shots though).  I did finish Bioshock though and thought it was one of the most atmospheric games I have ever played.  It does run out of steam at the end but it is so cool for 95% of the game that I overlooked the cheesy ending.

I have the recommended spec - a 360!  smile

I am not in love with the new theme of they seem to be taking.  The web site with the spattered blood, the head sliding down a spear as the transition graphic, etc.  However it is Bioware and they have been a company worth trusting.  I will wait until a few reviews come up but I bet I end up buying it.
2701  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Class of Heroes - a mix of Etrian Odyssey and Wizardry on: June 17, 2009, 05:32:49 PM
Apparently you can play the system at the sword icons by saving right before you touch them and seeing what you get.  If you don't like it load the game and try again.  But that doesn't feel like roll playing to me so I haven't done it.
2702  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Class of Heroes - a mix of Etrian Odyssey and Wizardry on: June 17, 2009, 03:03:36 PM
Your just a sadist so you like it. smile

It is not that it is confusing.  It is that it is tedious to the point of not being fun (for me).  I played for hours before I finally got the part needed to make a slingshot.  I would love to make a sword but I have never gotten a worn sword.  In fact after hours of playing the part of the slingshot was the first item I got which would be used to make another item.  I got lots of twine, string, etc. but none of the "base" items.  It is random but it is annoying that I could fill up my item bag and not get anything I could make into something!

I don't mind item creation but they could have streamlined the system a lot.  You should be able to see recipes and your items at the same time, so you don't have to remember what is needed for X item then go back to your list.  It is not intuitive at all.

2703  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Class of Heroes - a mix of Etrian Odyssey and Wizardry on: June 17, 2009, 01:19:24 PM
Yeah alchemy blows.  I have played for several hours and not gotten anything which could be made into something.  I actually had so much stuff my item bag got full!  So I had to sell a bunch of stuff (I know I could put in a locker but come on how many pieces of thread do I really need to horde?)  I finally got a broken sling shot (or whatever it is called) but no other piece (wood chip?) so I had to buy that, then I discovered you had to have a slingshot stone (but only one).  All in all it cost me 100 or so pieces of gold which is cheaper than a new one at the store but it was a terrible system to fight through.  I also find it almost beyond stupid that you have to buy a stone for it, and an arrow for the bow - but only one.  Why not just increase the price of the bow and call it bow&arrow?  If I only have to buy one then it isn't realistic, but at the same time it isn't simple.  That is just dumb.  All in all I think I will just sell everything unless it is obviously rare and not bother to much with alchemy.

My cleric has a healing spell, farley.

Did he start with one or get it after a level?  I wonder why mine didn't.

Yeah, I am confused about magic.  Over lunch I checked and a premade named Akika is a cleric and she know white and black magic (heal and fire) but none of the other premades know any black magic.  So how does one learn magic?  Why at level two does she have both?

2706  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Class of Heroes - a mix of Etrian Odyssey and Wizardry on: June 16, 2009, 03:55:30 PM
I long for the day I get a "broken bow" so I can make a bow.

The alchemy stuff is annoying.  It is harder than it needs to be.  You have to go into the recipe book, look around then go out and into your inventory to see if you have stuff then go back to the recipe book, etc. etc.  I can't remember in CoH if I have a crude iron, hard stones, etc.  so I constantly going back and forth.    The Witcher had a much easier system and more logical.  You went into the recipe book and what you could make was highlighted!

So I put in a couple more hours last night - all of them re-rolling my team!  Once I realized how important that is I knew I had to do it.  Here are a few tips

1. you can get anywhere between 1 and 40 bonus points when you first "enroll" a new character.  Re-roll.  It makes it a lot better to have a lot of those extra points.

2. if they are going to be a fighter start out as a warrior.  The XP needed for classes is different and the more "cool" classes require more.  For example a warrior only needs 400 XP to go from level 1 to 2, but a samurai needs 600.  So at the begining when you don't have good equipment and you are weaker you should start out with a class which can level faster.

3. Have both a wizard and a devout.  I was in the classic naming mode and took a cleric in my first party and I kept wondering why he couldn't heal.  Turns out devouts are the ones who get the healing spell (the cleric gets appraise which is great but not needed for a dungeon)  Both the wizard and devout can restore MP for free at the Dorm so you can completely heal your party without it costing anything.  Just have the devout cast heal as often as he/she can, then rest, then cast some more!

4. Make two parties - even if you only take one into the dungeon.  The second party can be the cleric and alchemist.  In my case I have three clerics so that I can always have someone appraising stuff.  When you come back from the dungeon put all your stuff to be appraised into the lockers in the dorm, then switch to your other party, go back in and appraise all of it, sell what you don't want, then go back to your dungeon party.  It is a bit tedious but you don't have to waste a spot in the dungeon party which is important.

That are the basic tips I can come up with for the very beginning of the game.  Anyone got more?

2710  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Class of Heroes - a mix of Etrian Odyssey and Wizardry on: June 15, 2009, 01:17:08 PM
I got it from Gamefly and put a couple hours into it.  I like it but I have to ask - why can't hard be fun? My basic scenario goes like this; go to dungeon, get into 4 fights because that is the number of times my wizard can cast fire, run out of dungeon, appraise what I got, sell anything worth over 100G, rest wizard for free to get back MP, head into dungeon and repeat.  This isn't particularly fun, it is just tedious.  Hard yes, but hard because it is tedious.

They could have come up with a risk reward system which would make it hard because it was challenging.  Here is an idea - have treasure based on the number of steps you have taken in the dungeon.  So if you walk 20 steps you get an ok treasure, if you walk 50 you get a good treasure, but make it 100 and you get something great!  So now I have to decide when I am at 82 steps do I go on? My team is beat, a couple characters dead, several with low HP, and the wizard is out of spells but I am so close!  If I can just make it a few more steps I will get something great!  Step count rests when you leave the dungeon so I know I can go out but I would lose all that work!    Suddenly in that type of game there is real tension because I have to weigh each step.  I get closer to great stuff but I also take risk.

CoH really has no tension.  I go until I can't cast any more then leave, rest and go back.  It is just a slow slog.  I love the setting, I love the art, I like the battle system, and I expect I will learn to enjoy alchemy but there isn't any excitement about going into the dungeons.

The Lindale Gamestop had one last night. You should check with the Westdale Gamestop, or perhaps one of the Video Games Etc stores might have one in today or Monday.

I can't believe they only got ONE at the Lindale store. That's just utterly ridiculous.

Your a lucky person.  None at Westdale, or any of the VideoGamesEtc. locations.  I can have Walmart ship to straight to the store for me but they don't carry it.

Since more of you have it I will ask again - is the manual needed?  Some of them are really a big help, some are just the same information you can get in game.  I will have it from Gamefly sometime next week but that is without a manual.  Should I bother ordering it?
