2681  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Does anyone here use an online budgeting/Money management tool? on: March 02, 2009, 09:58:31 PM
I have been using PearBudget for the last month (30 day free trial) and I couldn't be happier.  I will be paying the $3 a month for it.

This is just for budgeting though.  It has no interface to your bank accounts etc.

It is a 30 day free trial though so you really can't lose.

2682  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / 360 question - about changing startup defaults on: March 02, 2009, 09:51:27 PM
I would like to change two things and I wondered if it was possible

1. I don't want it to start with the "spotlight" I would prefer it to just be at "My Xbox" when starting.  I don't see that as an option - any ideas?

2. While it is fun to see who is on line I really don't need popups when I am watching a DVD or even in a game.  Can I disable those notifications?

Thanks,

I guess I am still wondering if the combat or levelling/classes gain much more depth later?  Are there any choices to make in that arena?  Does combat become more strategic at any point?

I am a bit farther than you and I played DQ8.  My answer is "No".  Combat and leveling will not get more depth later.  It is very old school so it will continue as it has.

You can do some fun things like capture monsters and use them to fight - and I bet fight in an arena type deal.  There is also a casino where you can play some mini games.

So if that doesn't sound good I wouldn't stick with it much longer.   I would stick with it until the "event"  Believe me you will know.  If you are not hooked after that I would dump it.  There are just too many great games to bother playing one you don't find fun.

2684  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Anyone tried to upgrade their 360 HD themselves? on: March 02, 2009, 02:17:59 PM
I was going to do it but this weekend on ebay I found a 120 GB drive for $80.  $30 more than if I did it myself but I shouldn't have any worries about being banned or having to hex edit the partitions myself.

I think the market for separate 120 GB drives has died since MS has lowered their prices so there are a lot of cheap drives around.

Great tutorial I found.

The only thing I would care about is losing my Netflix streaming.  I don't play online but I do watch movies.
2688  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Anyone tried to upgrade their 360 HD themselves? on: February 26, 2009, 09:43:13 PM
Correct.  I want to buy a hard drive from say newegg and put it in the enclosure myself.  There seem to be utilities on the web for formatting the drive with the correct partitions for the 360, and I know I need to get a specific model of hard drive for it to work but I wondered if anyone had tried it here.

How is it?  I am thinking of doing it because it is a lot cheaper but I don't know how hard it might be.  Anyone tried it?

To be honest, yes.

Why is it that every other industry is out there shouting loudly about how piracy is dooming them but the folks at Sony can't even seem to hire a firm to come up with some numbers?  Do they just not care?  Are the just dumb?...Ok after looking at the PS3 maybe they are so that isn't a good example....

Still if piracy was such a problem one would think that it would be a pretty frequently mentioned statistic but it isn't.  Yours is the best link I have seen and that is just to some guy posting in a forum.

No.  They will all have DSes with the R4 card to steal those games.  Pirating PSP games is sooo 2007!

Right, because nobody pirates PSP games.  You can tell by the stellar PSP software sales.  If everyone is so busy pirating DS games, why does Mario Kart DS and New Super Mario keep showing up in the top 10 NPDs?

Rather than go through this again, please just supply one link to any industry information about piracy rates on the PSP.  Just one.  There are many on PC game piracy, tons on music piracy, a gaggle on TV/Movie piracy.  So it should be simple to provide one about PSP piracy.  Really, just one.

I'll wait....

One..

That took approximately 3 seconds of googling. smile

I have a hard time believing that " Rlan from NeoGAF" counts as industry information.  Seems like a person on a forum going a search.

The thing is people really don't have 6 kids naturally and then 8 more naturally (statistically speaking anyway).  This is the result of modern medicine and it's "we can do it, so why not do it" mentality.

Well.. to be fair how many millions of Americans are defaulting right now?

Millions.  But how many people are in that convergence of people defaulting and having a daughter who has invetro fertilization to have more kids despite already having many, not having a husband, and not having a job?  I didn't even put in the number of kids because this coo-koo is unique.  Just people in default who also are having invetro fertilization - and who already have over, say, 2 kids.

I bet the number of Americans who fit that profile is about 1.  One person.  So please don't try to defend her as being just like millions of Americans.  That is a utter BS defense.

And before anyone tries the argument "it is actually her parents who are in default."  - She is living with her parents, her parents are behind on their mortgage, she has six kids.  Her responsibility to those six kids is to do everything in her power to make sure they have a home!  She needed to be busting her hump to make sure her parents didn't lose their home - the roof over those six kids head -!  Instead she got fertilized again.  That ain't cheap!  90% of insurances don't pay for it.  Where did she get the kind of money to pay for the procedure?  Why in the hell wasn't that money going to make sure her first six kids had a stable home!!

She is a miserable, selfish, evil person.  There is no defense of her.  None.  There is no way any rational person can think this trough and not come to the conclusion she was not taking care of those first six kids.  None.

2713  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [DS] Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon impressions on: February 19, 2009, 02:30:49 PM
The boys decided to go to bed late last night so I only got to play for a few minutes - about 4 battles but some quick impressions.

The gameplay is FE.  There are not really any surprises for anyone who has played the games.  It is still solid and fun turn based stuff.

The graphics are ....ok.  FE has never been about graphics but personally I find this one to look a bit worse than the GBA versions.  I know this is a remake of the first game and somehow it feels like the "blew up" the graphics to fit on the screen.  They are a bit blurry which reminds me of when I play a SNES in emulation.  So graphics are not a high point but they are good enough.

So far I haven't seen much in the way of new stuff.  The only thing I have seen is that if you hit "X" you can instantly see the attack range of all enemy units.  That is nice for planning movement.  Other than that there is nothing else new so far.  Perhaps I will find more as I play more.

The best thing so far is that the games runs really fast.  It feels very, very smooth.  Of course a snes game on the DS so it should be fast.  Still it is silky smooth.

So if you have played FE rush out and get it but if you haven't played any of the others go pick up FE:Sacred Stones for the GBA used and play it on the DS instead.

At the same time, I think you're underplaying the effect of piracy.

It's not so much the piracy itself, it's the stigma of piracy that will drive developers and publishers away, leading to there being less or no games that people are interested in.

When there is talk about piracy on the PC there are tons of articles and statements by developers, publishers, etc. citing how many games are pirated.  I never - and have never - seen that with the PSP.  Why?  If piracy is so rampant, and PC folks can come up with information to show it on the PC side, then it should be easy to show on the PSP side.

I am sure piracy is a problem but without any sort of information about it no one has any way of saying how big a problem it is.
