2681  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Random encounter frustration on: January 04, 2006, 03:01:03 PM
Quote from: "Clay"
So why is it that this type of random encounter is accepted so widely for a game like DQ VIII, when I can only imagine that random encounters by invisible enemies in World of Warcraft would drive people crazy?

I don't know.  I guess for the same reason I accept the hookey answers in Star Trek and stuff like that.

I love the genre and the goods out weigh the bads.

Sure, I prefer games with visible enemies but I love the genre enough that I put up with some stuff which I don't like.

and that before LucasArts culled it's staff, KOTORIII was in some form of pre-production.

I guess what matters to me is what was "bubbling" after LucasArts culled it's staff.
2683  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Random encounter frustration on: January 03, 2006, 05:45:44 PM
Sometimes this bothers me but mostly I just don't care.  The encounters in DQ8 are so much fun that I don't really care.

Are the people in my party so stupid and lacking senses and peripheral vision that they cannot see a giant dangerous party of monsters approaching???

Are they so dumb they can't hack at a door when they have swords, or that they can't jump over a simple low wall?  There are dozens of artifical things in games.  I don't see this as being any bigger or worse than any other.

Penny Arcade's strength is when they talk about video games, especially new ones.  Anything else is hit or miss.

I think that is how I feel.  I remember laughing at thier stuff when the Xbox first came out and the controller appeared so huge, and thier digs at Pokemon, but "I fucked your dad"  is probably on my list of never funny punchlines.

I did finish, may have had 100% (with info assistance, of course).  Really good game.  I still really want Metroid 2, waiting to see if I can pick it up for $10 somewhere, or in a trade.

So why haven't you PMed me yet? smile

I think it's a great and I love my umd's. I go to the gym put in a good movie and watch it on my psp while on the treadmill.

They are great for some things but I think for most people it just isn't worth it.

A non-gamer could by a portable DVD player and do the same thing you do.  Judging from some of the sales I saw over Christmas they can actually do it cheaper than buying a PSP.
2688  Non-Gaming / Trading Forum / FT/FS: Metroid Prime: Echoes on: December 29, 2005, 09:18:14 PM
I got this for Christmas but I have already played it.  Of course it came with no reciept so I can't really return it anywhere.  That leaves trading or selling so I am posting here.

I have a Cube, PS2, DS, Xbox and PC but I don't have any specific games in mind.  If you are interested PM me and I will consider any offer.

2689  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / UMD Movies - Here to stay or just a faze? on: December 29, 2005, 08:44:36 PM
I am pretty much in the "won't last" camp.

I just don't see the math working unless a lot of other devices come out which use them.  When you consider how many PSPs sell, and the look at how many of those people actually buy UMD movies...I just can't imagine it makes a lot of sense for most movies.

There must be a huge lack of game for the system if this is such an important deal that people are constantly checking to see if anyone else in the world has the game!
2691  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Underworld 2: Evolution Jan. 20th on: December 28, 2005, 05:51:32 PM
I will see it but I am not expecting much.  The first one was alright but could have been so much better.

The main thing which drove me nuts was that there was really nothing special about the vampires.  They drove cars, used guns, rode trains, etc.  Besides a long life they seemed like normal people.

Vampires are suposed to have supernatural powers not just better bullets.
2692  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Resident Evil 4 - should I play? on: December 28, 2005, 05:47:42 PM

I think I will pick it up.  It seems like too good a game to miss out on.
2693  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Resident Evil 4 - should I play? on: December 27, 2005, 09:15:29 PM
I noticed this popping up on lots of best of the year lists so I started looking into it more.  It seems great but I have some questions.

1. should I play the Gamecube or the PS2 version?  The PS2 has the extra "separate ways" section, but the Cube seems to offer less load times and slightly better visuals.

2. how hard is it?  I have gotten fustrated in the other RE games becuase I run out of healing items and ammo.

So anyone have a recommendation and answers?

2694  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Favorite game you PLAYED in 2005, no matter it's year? on: December 27, 2005, 02:27:35 PM
Great choices for most of this is hard.

By system.

GBA - Fire Emblem: Sacred Stones.  I put just a ton of time into this game.   More than any other GBA game I have ever had.

DS - Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time.  I am not done with it yet but so far it has the most entertaining use of the dual screens of any DS game I have played.

PS2 - Dragon Quest 8.  I have sunk 35 hours into this and I think I still have a ton more to play.  It is just perfect in almost every way I have seen on a console RPG.

Cube - Paper Mario 2.  I think this came out last year but I just played it this year so and it is wonderful.  Entertaining, funny, with great combat, clever puzzles and a good story.

Xbox - Ninja Gaiden: Black.  For wimps like me they put in the easy mode and I thank them.  It makes a game which was fustratingly hard into a game which is just hard. smile  I am glad I am getting to enjoy this game and I hope it has strong sales so that companies will see that wimps spend money and cater to us.  I am not even insulted I am a dog who wears pink.

I am sure I enjoyed many other games this year which I have completely forgotten but that is enough for now.
2695  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Xbox 360 anyone?? on: December 22, 2005, 01:43:47 PM
The 360 will do well if they can come up with a few games which have the player look up young girls skirts.  That is really lacking from the original Xbox and I think that is what hurt them in Japan.

More upskirting = sucess!

I won't complain though.  I think that I will almost be done with Dragon Quest 8 by then!

And it was selling for $40 where I saw it, so man, you guys want to sell a few more copies, bring the price down, sheeeesh.

$40 is very, very high for a DS game.  Even most of the high profile titles seem to go for $35.

As a civilized society that embraces the ideals of compassion and forgiveness through rehabilitation, of course we can’t torture convicted criminals (mentally ill or not).  But if you’re going to argue the idea of acceptable torture, wouldn’t incarceration for life and long isolation periods be considered a form of torture, both mental and physical?  A human having to spend the remainder of their lives in a small cell, potentially abused or raped during this time, seems to qualify as torture to me.  Incarceration seems to be the most civilized form of acceptable torture outside of the death penalty that we’re willing to accept as a society for the punishment of crimes.

At what point do we draw the line between being compassionate and forgiving human beings and not becoming an apologist for the actions of others, mentally ill or not?  It’s easy to make broad and sweeping statements like all forms of torture are bad and evil, but then how do we punish people that violate our laws?  And do the mentally ill get an exception card that grants them sort of a free pass to accountability that “normal people” don’t get?  And when do we stop trying to rehabilitate or help someone?

I think we can determine a line between torture and punishment.  It actually doesn't seem that fine of a line really.  We seem to have pretty good lines already drawn.

As for the last question I don't think we every stop trying to rehablilitate someone.  From a purely selfish perspective it would always be better to have a functional member of society so we are always better off trying to rehabilitate.

I have a hard time with the idea expressed by some of you that tourturing the mentally ill is a good thing.  What the hell, to you kick the shit out of the crazy guy on the subway too?

Only if he's injecting that shit into his kid.

So your response, in all seriousness, to torture is torture?  More over your response to the actions of the mentally ill is to torture them.

I see this kid around town here who has to wear a helmet and he will sometimes start smacking his head at things, maybe you would like to come beat the shit out of him.  I am sure it will help.

To believe that somehow we should as a society torture her, subject her to involuntary experimintation, or just kill her outright is every bit as evil as what she did - and I assume that most of you don't have mental illness to explain your actions.

Should she be roaming free? no.  Should she ever have custody of her children again? of course not.   However when someone is mentally ill we don't torture them.

Seriously. What's going on with that game? What could be holding things up? They're using a game engine from another dev house - what is the engine at this point, anyway? - so other than tweaking it, they have to, what, make some levels, a few weapons and baddie models, and a silly story? And I don't mean to bring this up as another DNTF joke - I'm actually curious to know what could be holding the game up. How could it be vaporware? What are they doing over at 3D Realms?

I would guess there are two options.

1. they are not really working on it.  Or if they are it is 15 minutes of work and 7+ hours of playing other games.

2. serious infighting.  Perhaps they all simply hate each other so whatever one creates the others simply work to tear down.  No agreement on story, level design, etc.  Just constant bickering with each person doing what they want and ignoring the whole.

Anyone know how many monsters are available for the Monster Arena?

I've only run into maybe five or so named monsters so far.  Do more appear once the arena becomes available?

More become available as you beat different ranks.  So once you beat "D" rank there will be more monsters roaming around to collect.

If you are a person who likes guides here is a Monster Area FAQ which details which monsters become available and when.  It also describes each rank, what are good teams, what teams have special moves or bonuses.  It is quite detailed and very useful.

So is it too early to give up quite yet?   I could very easily release the 200 dollars my wife was going to put toward it and let her spend it as she wishes.         Or I could wait and hope.... and also hope that my contacts here pan out or that I happen upon one as it gets to the loading dock.

Edit to add:   if I give it up now, it will likely be months before I can purchase one.    In fact.... I might then decide to skip it and wait for PS3 at that point.

It is never too early to quit!  smile

I would say you have a 5-10% chance of getting one but how optimistic of a person are you?

Why'd this turn into a PSP vs DS bash?  Give the PSP another 6-8 months, and we'll see.  The DS took a long time to come into its own, the PSP should be given the same chance I think.

So if I understand right we should give an existing system (the PSP) a few more months before we declare it a failure but we can declare a system which isn't even out yet (the Revolution) a failure right now?
2708  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / The Revolution has begun...(IGN chan, specs, launch date?) on: December 07, 2005, 02:04:13 PM
I just don't get it.  When discussing the PS3 vs. the 360 people go on and on about how it isn't power which matters this generation but games, on-line stuff, etc.  (basically whatever MS is good at) but when discussing the Revolution is is all about horsepower again.

I am really left with the conclusion that people see what they want to see.

There has been a lot of dissatisfaction with the Cube and its lineup of games and it is fashionable to dis Nintendo.  Not without cause because they don't appear to be trying to hard to create new games and seem to be happy milking what they got.

I haven't beaten one yet in DQ8, but if the prequels are any indication...

Pure and total luck.

And if I remember correctly, there are a few skills you can learn that are good against metal targets...

I would like to pretend it was something really smart that I did but that was pretty much it.  Luck.

I expected him to run away every round. The fight actually latsted 5-6 rounds because only the here had "metal slash" so most of the team missed each time.

About the only thing I think I have found is don't waste magic.  Nothing Jessica threw at them helped at all but she will occasionally hit for one point when attacking normally.

2714  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / [360] 'second shipment' = Absolutely Nothing on: December 02, 2005, 02:19:38 PM
I think it is a big plan by MS to keep demand for the 360 very very high not just through Christmas but until the PS3 comes out.

They have a year (roughly) window where there is nothing to touch them so I believe they intend to keep demand high that whole time.

Why?  Because they can and it will keep interest/press/hype high.  People will still be buzzing about the system.

If they didn't people would be buzzing about the games and that is a more unknown factor.

Was it a special monster (the kind you can see on a world map) on the beach that the recipe referenced (near the lady bandit)?  If so, then once you defeat it you will get a message the the monster rises up again, looks at your party with respect, and then you will get the choice to send the monster to Morrie's.

No it was one of the babies in a group, so it wasn't the right little twerp.

I think I will go after them tonight rather than working on getting the ship (the next story quest).  It sounds like fun to find them.
