2681  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Far Cry for those who have finished HL2 on: December 15, 2004, 03:29:19 PM
I think I liked HL2 more but I have to say that nothing in HL2 looked as amazing to me as the first time I walked in the jungle in Far Cry and saw the shadows from the leaves moving accross my gun and the ground.  It was just incredible.
2682  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / How does anyone surf with default IE? on: December 14, 2004, 07:08:32 PM

the latest version of IE has a built-in pop-up blocker that does a good job.  as long as IE is kept up to date, pop-ups aren't really a problem anymore.

Now is that on IE on all OSes?  I know it is part of SP2 for XP but is that update available for say Win 2k?
2683  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / How does anyone surf with default IE? on: December 14, 2004, 06:47:34 PM
I am at training all week and all they have is IE with no pop-up stopper.  It is about impossible to do any actual surfing!  90% of sites seem to have pop-ups of some kind.  I surf for awhile and look down to see 8 IE windows open!

It is so odd since I use Firebird usually or Opera to even see pop-ups.

Does anyone (by choice) still use IE without any pop-up stopping?
2684  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / My First REALLY COOL HL2 Moment *SPOILERS* on: December 14, 2004, 02:21:45 PM
I had my first moment at Nova Prospect.  Something about the place just looked amazing to me.  It might be that it was the biggest non-outdoor environment.  You could look over the railings and see just a huge place.

Correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't steam and HL2 cracked within 24 hours of Nov. 16? The things I hate about steam is that it acts as spyware connecting to Valve every time I want to play the game. If I don't want that, I disable my network connection then I'm good to go. I can respect the "connect to authenticate" method though, so for that one point I can see developers using similar methods in the future. I hate that it tries to connect every day time I launch though. The first should be it, IMO. But it's not a deal breaker, just more of an annoyance than anything else.

I wonder about this.  Today it is just to authenticate the game but what about if like TiVo they started seeing the benifit of selling information about game time to someone.  They could sell stats about how many times people drive vehicle X, or use weapon Y, so that developers could make "better" games.

I know many of you are rolling your eyes but one of the big things in marketing is data on what consumers want, or their habits.  It is a huge industry.  If you think games will somehow be imune to advertising power you are crazy.

I just wanted to comment on the "doesn't stop pirates" bit.

You're right, Steam doesn't stop pirates dead.  Nothing short of hardware-based anti-piracy routines would do that.  What Steam did stop, however, was a functional pre-release pirate release.

Most publishers/developers will tell you, the point of copy protection is to defend the game before it hits shelves and, ideally, during the first week of purchases.  Think about it--if you're interested in a game, would you rather play a week earlier via a pirate release, or be a good boy/girl and wait til release?

Devices like Steam and the mythical "big red button" to unlock game files force the latter option.  There is no "early release."

Ah but so does starforce!  It takes a few weeks usually for Starforce games to be cracked, so it might actually be better at slowing down pirates than Steam.

It has its own drawbacks though.

Just to get back to actual points rather than stuff that will just get the thread locked.

Quote
4.) Too bad. Steam is one of those "big changes in the industry people try to resist." It happened with the change from 3.5" floppies to CDs. It happened with the change from DOS to Win95. It happened with 3D Acceleration. (I've still got a PC Gamer issue which suggests "Thinking hard before jumping onto the 3D bandwagon" as the PC Gamer writers weren't forward-thinking enough to realize how 'big' 3D acelleration would become.) It happened with DirectX. And right now we're seeing the exact same growing pains coupled with ignorant shortsightedness in three major sectors of the gaming industry:

Says who?  I mean I know Valve is pushing Steam but I don't see many publishers pushing Steam type distribution.

Now one could say that independent companies will be pushing for Steam type stuff, but a whole lot of them don't have the money to make games, build a distribution method, support that, etc.

They need publishers to fund their games.  So until publishers get on board with Internet distribution it will only be developers with rather deep pockets who can do it.  That isn't a large number.

I also think we need to look more seriously at the advantages and disadvantages.  There is a tendency to look at new technology and just assume it is great!   But not every technology is good.

Steam for example -  What are its serious pros and cons.

Pro - developers make more money, patches are easier to put out.

Con - hard for people without connections to get games, makes it hard for them to get patches.   It also doesn't stop pirates (one of the big assumed pros)

So does Steam make sense?  Is it a good business model?  (and let me give you the answer - I don't have a clue! smile  But I do think it is a real discussion which needs to take place)

2692  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Blade Trinity - How is it? on: December 11, 2004, 04:25:25 AM
Wow what a stinker!  I loved the second one and I really liked the first but the third....it is just so bad.

I wasn't expecting a great plot but the story was so pointless that I could never care at all about any of it. Even taking that into account is still pushed reason.  Apparently Blade and Co. can't find Drake but Drake has no problem finding the Nightstalkers.  Why?  Just better staffing?   The weird "vampire final solution" was a total of what....5 minutes of the movie?  Why even have it in there?  It didn't make any sense with their resurecting Drake, who was suposed to be the important villian.

I also don't think Blade works well as a buddy flick.  I can suspend my disbelief whe Blade gets the crap beaten out of him because he is part vampire, but the scene where Hannibal gets kicked around by Triple H just doesn't work.  He is suposed to be human so the ass kicking he gets would be enough to kill him.

It was just so bad that I can't even think of what else to talk about.

1. The weird light sword thing.  Part "Ba' leth" (From Worf on Star Trek) and part lightsaber - yet all dumb.

2. The camera gun.  Not only in cell phones anymore!

3. The virus/thingy being a bug attacking blood cells.  What CGI genius came up with that?

4. Abigale and her product placement....I mean desire to use an Ipod!  Good think it never gets caught on something.

5. The sterotypical computer geek who make weapons.

6. The FBI/police simply giving up pursuit of Blade for the entire middle part of the movie.

And those are just the ones that really stick in my mind as things that I simply couldn't suspend my disbelief about.

Before I hear all about not taking the movie seriously, it being a popcorn flick, etc.  let me just say I am more than willing to do that!  Some of my favorite movies are real stinkers.  I love Blade 2, The Fifth Element, Hudson Hawk!!,  and Cradle 2 The Grave to name a few movies that really required a lot of supension of disbelief.  I can do that.  Blade Trinity just pushed it too far.

On the plus side I saw the trailer for Constantine. That looks like it could be quite good.

  ???

The game was released on the 6th but not even in most stores until the 7th.

Assuming you got it at 10 AM on the 7th that means there has only been 72 hours since then.

You really have played over half the hours total since Tuesday?  Do you have a job?  Do you sleep?

I am not disputing your numbers but I just find it amazing (and odd) that someone would spend that much time simply playing a video game.

Man, Ubi should take a lesson from EIDOS and the Tomb Raider syndrome. Between Prince of Persia and the endless Tom Clany games, they're going to run their best franchises into the ground.

I think they are taking the lessons seriously - I just don't think it is the lesson you want.

They see that sequels, even if not as good, sell more copies than original games.   Look at the sales for Prince of Persia: Warrior Within vs. Beyond Good and Evil.

It doesn't take a marketing genius to see that it would be much more profitable to make another PoP game.  So they will.

2696  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Spiderman 2 (major spoilers) on: December 09, 2004, 02:36:44 PM
I thought the movie was ok but I was really sick by the end of Parker constantly being on the verge of tears.

I felt like they took the idea that being Spiderman was tough and beat it to death.  I mean how many scenes do we need?  Come on.

The most fun stuff was when he was Spiderman but those scenes were few.  Most of the movie seemed to be Toby with red puffy eyes looking like his puppy just died.
2697  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Blade Trinity - How is it? on: December 08, 2004, 05:24:38 PM
It is so hard to decide from professional reviewers about movies like this.    If you look at action films on rottentomatoes you will see that the vast majority are not reviewed well.

That isn't to say that reviewers are wrong about Blade 3 but it is hard to get a feeling except from actual people rather than professional types.

I bet folks are right and they will eventually offer it.  It is just to easy not to.  It already exists as a download so all it would require is taking people's money and then enabling some permissions to download the files and play them.

For Valve it requires practically no investment.  The work is already done for the most part.  They have the games, they have the delivery method, they have the payment process, etc.  It is pure profit.

One thing about Gothic and Gothic 2. It would be a great game, if the control system was even halfway decent. It has HORRIBLE controls. I have no idea what they were thinking making that horrible control system.

Gothic is a good game, but be prepared for a monumental struggle with the control system. If you can get past the first few frustrating hours though, you will find a good game lurking below.

I always wondered what the developers were thinking.  I sometimes think they must simply - think in a fundementally different way than I do.  The control scheme made so little sense in a world of mice.

I just finished HL2 which I bought retail and I was feeling a bug to play HL 1 and maybe Opposing Forces so I log into Steam to check out prices.

Valve is nice enough to offer that I can buy those games for only $89, or $50 in the bundles with HL2!  Isn't that great?

No, it isn't (in case you wondered)  It is stupid.  They could have may $10 from me by letting me buy those games but no they are only sold in the bundle.

Since Steam is always running, etc. every game these sell is profit.  They could have made a profit on me but they have decided that would be silly.  They actually would prefer that they never got any more money from me.

So, so dumb.

2719  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Kingdom Hearts 2 details and trailer on: December 03, 2004, 02:43:25 PM
You are certainly entitled to your opinion but I will always hate the game.

For me the camera made it impossible to enjoy.  You couldn't rotate it completely with the shoulder buttons - it wouldn't go pass solid objects very well.

And even that might have been ok if it had not almost worked against the player.  Best example, early in the game when you go to Tarzan's world.  As you are walking along the beams in the first building the camera perspective switches - without you touching anything! So you are pushing up to walk forward and suddenly pushing up makes you walk off the beam because you had to push left to keep walking forward! That is just stupid.  I didn't change the camera angle, I want to keep moving the same way but suddenly because the game decided to move the camera!

I am happy you liked it but for me the game had so many aspects which seemed to actually work against the player that I couldn't stand it.
