I think part of it is you have smoke for a long time before getting neon but I only had neon for a short time before video so I don't feel like I had time to get as bored with it.

Notably (and thankfully, imo) it misses the following aspects from every bad boss encounter you surely hate:

Timed battle (bonus points for not having this, plus a few more for not being an invisible timer)
Regular un-avoidable attack that does massive damage unless you do a very specific counter/block/move at the exact moment.
Resistant against all attacks except your special moves.

I was going to add that it didn't have the "destroy all X before you can hurt the boss" mechanic but then in the 3rd stage it did where you had to kill the angles guarding the big angle before you could hurt him.

All in all after beating it I think it wasn't that bad it just feels out of place and unwanted.

Oh and "video" power sucks so far so I don't even expect to use it much.
164  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [Ps4] inFAMOUS: Second Son on: August 25, 2014, 07:04:07 PM
Rather than dig through this whole thread let me just rant.

I f-ing hate boss battles.  I have been loving the game up to the point where I have to face the Angel conduit.  It has every stupid hallmark of a boss battle - which I hate!

It doesn't even f*&%ing fit even remotely with the rest of the game play up to that point.  I spent hours running around town climbing things choosing how to defeat enemies and using many different powers but no now I have to f-ing fight in a boxed in area where the safe spots disappear so I have to keep running around, and of course the boss is strong enough that I need to constantly seek out more ammo.  Of course the boss has three stages where he gets different powers or protections so I have to figure that out while jumping around like an idiot over lava.

I can't think of any boss battle cliche they don't cover.  It is maddening and stupid.  Why do developers think they have to include this.  It is like a stupid checklist or something.

Amazon—not Google—reportedly buying Twitch for $1 billion

Well-sourced site The Information (subscription required) is claiming that Amazon is in "late stage talks" to purchase, the video game streaming site, for $1 billion.

Three months ago, Variety first reported that Google was set to purchase the site for the same amount, but we've yet to hear anything official from either company. We've been starting to wonder if the Google/Twitch deal would ever become official; and if Twitch is still courting other suitors, it would explain why that deal has yet to happen.

I guess I could care less as long as it stays free and relatively without ads a

Legend of Grimrock still coming for iOS.

A friend of us and a coder extraordinaire, Juha Pinola has now been working on the iOS version of Legend of Grimrock 1 for some time and the game is shaping up really well. We do not know the release date just yet other than “when it’s done” but we’ll let you know when we know, ok? The game isn’t just a direct port from the PC version of Legend of Grimrock. We have always felt that the game wouldn’t work on touch screens straight out of the box but needed a few custom mechanics to get the benefits of the touch interface.

Captain America: The Winter Solider comes out this week and I am going to buy it.  For some reason I am thinking of buying digital and wondered how common it was.   I think if I do it I will buy from Amazon, not because I love them but because I know I will be able to play it on my iPad, PS4, and computer.  If I bought it from the PSN store or the Apple store I would be locking myself in to a specific device.

Anyone else made the switch to digital?  Do you miss the boxes?

George R.R. Martin To Republish 'Game Of Thrones' Children's Book

If there’s one thing we’ve all thought as we watched a brutal swordfight or X-rated act of incest on HBO's drama “Game of Thrones,” it’s definitely “I wish I had an age-appropriate way to share this story with my young kid/niece/nephew/godchild.” Now, finally, winter is coming for the kids as well. This fall, Tor is rereleasing George R.R. Martin’s 1980 children’s story The Ice Dragon, which is set in the same A Song of Ice and Fire world as "Game of Thrones."

The Ice Dragon was originally published as part of a 1980 anthology, Dragons of Light. In 2007, the story was released as a book, but it is no longer in print -- meaning for several years now, children have had no way to experience "Game of Thrones" mania for themselves, short of scouring used book stores and eBay for a used copy. The new edition, re-imagined with delicate, dreamy illustrations by Spanish artist Luis Royo, hits bookstores Oct. 21.

'Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles' is a Hollow Shell of a Movie

At one point in the latest iteration of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, our heroes in a half-shell are flying through the sewers on their way back home after a victory against the Foot Clan. After some quick sliding, flipping, skateboarding and more they all go flying towards the entrance back to their home pipe, but all four of them end up getting stuck in the doorway, and Michelangelo farts. That's what Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles feels like amidst an onslaught of remakes, reboots and sequels: another fart from the studio system that churns out films like this as if they were delivery pizzas that not even the turtles will eat.

PlayStation Now subscription option 'definitely in the works'

To recap, PlayStation Now lets players stream PS3 games from Sony's cloud servers to PS4, and other systems in the future. Currently the beta only offers rental options, with players able to access games for either 4 hours, 7 days, 30 days or 90 days. As displayed in a new video, there are different prices for different games - Vigil Games' Darksiders, for example, is $3 for 4 hours, $6 for a week, $8 for 30 days and $15 for 90.

The pricing structure has been the major point of contention for potential customers, reflected by Buser noting there'll be "reduced pricing" on some of the four-hour rentals in the coming weeks, bringing them down to $2. He also noted some of the games come with DLC included. However, it's likely most scrutiny will be reserved for how Sony approaches a subscription model, which the company plans to reveal more about "later."

186  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Ebola outbreak on: July 31, 2014, 03:51:02 PM
We have the science to build an Ebola vaccine. So why hasn't it happened?

The problem, instead, is the economics of drug development. Pharmaceutical companies have little incentive to pour research and development dollars into curing a disease that surfaces sporadically in low-income, African countries. They aren't likely to see a large pay-off at the end — and could stand to lose money.

yeah, I've never understood the drive to buy a phone full price either unless you travel out of the country a lot.  Otherwise, you pay the same monthly rate I do as a subscriber but paid more for your phone.  I know it's due to the companies not wanting to cut profits though.

I buy mine because none of the carriers sell a subsidized phone without a data plan.  I don't use data at all.  At work and home I have wi-fi and I can live without the times between.  A plan without data is $20 less than one with data.  Over the course of two years that is $480.  My Google Nexus 5 was $350.  So I saved $130 by not getting a "subsidized" phone.

So after seeing the side by side of Destiny on the PS3 and PS4 I sold my PS3 and am buying a PS4 tonight. smile

On the plus side it means I just "finished" several games in my backlog but now I need something to tide me over until Destiny actually launches.

So what game should I buy for the PS4?  I am leaning towards Infamous because it seems like the one I am most likely to be able to play with my kids watching (ages 8 and 6) because while their is a fair amount of violence you can choose to be good and save people.

What else should I consider?

Seemed timely

The middle class is 20 percent poorer than it was in 1984

Nostalgia is just about the only thing the middle class can still afford. That's because median wealth is about 20 percent lower today, in inflation-adjusted dollars, than it was in 1984.

Yes, that's three lost decades.

Now, as you might expect, the middle class has been hit particularly hard by the Great Recession and the not-so-great recovery. It's all about stocks and houses. The middle class doesn't have much of the former, but it does have a lot of the latter. And that's bad news, because, even though the crash decimated both, real estate hasn't come back nearly as much as equities have. So the top 1 percent, who hold more of their wealth in stocks, have made up more of the ground they lost. But, as the Russell Sage Foundation points out, the slow housing recovery means that, in 2013, median households were still 36 percent poorer than they were a decade earlier.

In fact, the housing bust was big enough to erase all the gains the middle class had made the past 30 years—and then some. As you can see below, median households didn't add much wealth between 1984 and 2007. That's what happens when real wages don't increase, and the cost of a middle class lifestyle—housing, healthcare, and higher education—does. So, as Dean Baker points out, when the crisis did come, it devoured these meager gains and left the middle class with 20 percent less wealth than they had when it was "Morning in America."

Of course since it went on Amazon it was just the system so now I have a game to sell.  Actually I had three but the Amazon price for 2 of them is under $10 and I don't see why anyone would pay be enough to get a bit of profit and still cover shipping so I think I will just take them to the store and trade them in.

So the one game:

Gaystation 4 up for auction

In celebration of pride week in Sweden, retailer Webhallen is auctioning off a customized PlayStation 4 to support The Swedish Federation for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer Rights (RFSL). Designated the "Gaystation edition," the auction for the $400 console is already up to $1,630 (as of this writing).

"For many young people, the world of games will become a refuge to escape the taunting or worse of real life. On Webhallen, we are gamers in heart and mind, and are keen that as many as possible have the opportunity to feel welcome and enjoy the world's largest and fastest growing interest: video games," notes the Webhallen post, with #thisisforthegaymers.

The site also notes that 100% of the proceeds will go to RFSL Newcomers, which works with asylum seekers, undocumented migrants and new LGBTQ arrivals under that division.
