Worth watching - a Gametrailers "Just Played" discussion about the a demo at PAX East.

Man I hope this comes out for consoles.
162  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Sid Meier's Starships on: March 13, 2015, 03:50:56 PM
My thoughts;  It is fun, strategy light.

I will copy a post by LordGek on Toucharcade's forums to describe the gameplay.

Quote
You are racing about the galaxy trying to earn favor from its inhabitants via various tactical combat missions while a couple of other AI controlled fleets are doing the exact same thing. While there are a few ways to win, the main one is simply winning over 51% of the galaxy's population. Run a mission for a planet and you'll gain both favor and some valuable resources. Do missions for the same planet a couple of times before the AI get a chance to do so and then you'll own the planet which grants you even more resources and puts you completely in charge of its defense.

These resources you collect come in a few different forms and each of the palnets you gain influence over will have its own specialties. Off the top of my head I can't recall which does what other than some obvious stuff like food allows you to build cities (more cities on a planet the higher their resource production), research allows you to improve your various ship functions, and metal is used to create/repair/improve ships.

While the various empire ships can all look different, they're all essentially the same basic ships with just different ratings on their individual components. Even research, at least as I've seen so far, will never offer up any radically new components or weapons, just ways for your existing guns to do more damage or your shields to absorb more punishment.

One concpet pretty original is the whole Shore Leave thing. The game allows you to decide how much you want to get done in a single turn at the cost of greater and greater crew fatigue for each mission you take in that single turn. While resources will only be generated once on all of your systems at the end of your turn, you could just keep it safe and run a single mission that turn with your crew at peak efficiency, or end up doing 3 or more missions with a crew practically falling asleep (stats for the ship are lower and enemy hits will do extra damage) by the end.

I had a lot of trouble with the touch interface.  Several times I touched an area to move the map so I could look around and my ship moved to that place.  When you upgrade a ship you have a confirmation check box why not have that for movement?  I could see the trouble with people moving all over to scope out enemies but that seems easy to solve - you don't see anything about an area until you check the accept box.

Anyway, it is fun for the short I got to play.

Long video/conversation about playing Final Fantasy 15.  Worth watching is you are interested in the game.

I say conversation because she is just talking about when she played it and they just show video clips.

Anyone try the demo?

I got it last night and I have to say I was disappointed.  I loved the quirky setting, the art style, and even some of the gameplay but it left me cold.  I think it was how they did the camera.  It never felt fluid.

I think it went from a buy to a buy used down the road.

What did others think?

So last night I played the new Zelda with the 3d on with the new 3ds.  I found it actually worked.  I mention this because I never could get it to work on the old 3ds and had 3d turned off all the time.

I am very happy they did the face tracking update.

190  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Batman: Arkham Knight is rated M on: February 24, 2015, 09:44:02 PM
I don't really care one way or the other if it works in the story/world they are creating.  I find that often times developers put in adult content to seem to satisfy some childish urge to be dirty.  If often feels out of place and silly.  However they have made this world of Batman pretty dark so I can see it fitting.

I still wouldn't mind an open world game like this - using Batman even - that was kid friendly.  While Batman's world is getting darker he has a no kill ethic which would seemingly be kid friendly but they put in a lot of other stuff that kills that.  I feel like there are not any good open world games which I can play with the kids.  It seems like a niche that could be met.

I am sure glad those superheroes have secret identities.  Otherwise everyone would know who they are!

Don't get me wrong, I know that big stars want their faces seen but it just kind of seems silly to talk about doing the whole upcoming Civil War storyline when everyone knows the identities of all of them already!

196  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / What skills will be obsolete in 50 years? on: February 24, 2015, 05:48:38 PM
Saw this topic over at io9 and thought it was neat.

What do you think will be obsolete in 50 years?

For me it is cursive.  I am a working professional and I can't remember the last time I needed to write something over a paragraph in length in cursive.  I write quick notes to myself or others but nothing longer than a sentence.

I also think that driving will be gone soon.  Heck when I was growing up my mom had me learn to drive a stick shift because she thought it was important.  Now something like 98% of cars sold are automatic.  In 50 more years they will all be self driving.

What is on your list?

I thought these were cool because of how complex the setup is for a stunt driver.

198  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Sid Meier's Starships on: February 24, 2015, 02:53:04 PM
Polygon has an article up about some time they got to play with the game

Quote
Even in this small demo, the variety of missions was exciting to see. Once, my task was to secure three orbital sentry stations from marauder attack. With only two capital ships, it was a cat-and-mouse game, with me chasing nimble fighters and heavily armed frigates from point to point. In another mission, I had to stop a single thief from leaving the system with secret documents. I used a volley of torpedoes to funnel him toward my fast-attack ships, trapped him in an asteroid field and gunned him down. In yet another I found myself in a pitched battle against a superior force, and had to scatter my fleet using jump gates while my fighters launched risky hit-and-run attacks on the enemy's flanks.

Every engagement felt unique, and the generous maneuverability of even the largest ships meant that combat rarely bogged down and become a war of attrition.

Quote
Starships' low-poly art style and use of matte paintings over in-engine cutscenes is sure to turn off some players. She isn't the prettiest game out there, to be sure. But as far as strategic gameplay goes, she's got it where it counts.

As annoying as they are I know it is more like the last gasps of a dying person.  Desperate to cling to life they will try anything.  They just don't serve a purpose in the current retail world.

However I remember how cool they used to be so I just feel bad for them.

Lynch seeks 'I'm just here' trademark

Seattle Seahawks running back Marshawn Lynch is a man of few words, but when he utters those words, he sometimes trademarks them.

Lynch last week filed for the trademark to the phrase "I'm just here so I won't get fined" with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

Lynch famously uttered the phrase as the answer to more than 20 questions on Super Bowl XLIX media day before walking off the podium.
