Hitler reacts to kiss from excited American woman at the Berlin Olympics, 1936
Shortly before the finish of the men’s 1500 meters free-style swimming, a woman in a red hat, whom Black Guards repeatedly prevented from photographing Hitler at close range, broke the cordon during the excitement of the finish of the race, shook Hitler by the hand and then kissed him, while the crowd of 20,000 rocked with laughter. Hitler, who was in high spirits, joined in the fun, clapping his hands as the woman returned triumphantly to her seat.

Erwin Rommel inspecting the defenses in Normandy, 1944
Adolph Hitler put Field Marshall Rommel in charge of the French Atlantic wall and the defense of Europe from an Allies cross-channel invasion in 1944. Rommel arrived, looked over the situation, and immediately ordered a tremendous upgrading of the fortifications on all of the English Channel beaches.

The Fat Man on transport carriage, Tinian Island, 1945
It’s so odd to see that an object roughly the same size as an SUV can destroy an entire city and leave radioactive damage for lifetimes afterwards. The Fat Man and Trinity were both implosion based plutonium devices, but they were very different weapons. Trinity’s “the gadget” was a massive unemployable bomb that would test the theories that Fat Man was based on.

Residents of West Berlin show children to their grandparents who reside on the Eastern side, 1961
The building of the Berlin Wall in August 1961 divided families and neighborhoods in what had been the capital of Germany. The Wall represented a uniquely squalid, violent, and ultimately futile, episode in the post-war world. Life was changed overnight in Berlin. Streets, subway lines, bus lines, tramlines, canals and rivers were divided. Family members, friends, lovers, schoolmates, work colleagues and others were abruptly separated. In some cases, children who had been visiting their grandparents on the other side of the border were suddenly cut off from their parents.

This trailer almost makes me want to pre-order again but I know I have too much stuff to play anyway and it is better to wait for reviews.

Still you should watch this trailer (small story spoilers)

You can tell a lot about how successful an actor's career is by how often they come back to the sure paycheck.

I don't think things are going well for Kate.

I am sensing this game will be very divisive.  Here is a positive article that can't quite seem to say the game is great but really wants to.  I wonder how FF15 will do...

Two Surprisingly Good Hours With Final Fantasy XV
*even the title indicates that we all expect it to be bad but it is good

Quote
At PAX in Seattle last week, I played two hours of the next marquee Final Fantasy, and I left with two main thoughts:

1) This game is kind of janky, but also kind of amazing?

2) Just how much product does Noctis use? And when do I get to play more?

A top tier title being "janky" at this stage in development makes me glad I didn't pre-order.

Quote
There are some technical issues—framerate hitches, bad lipsyncing, terrible camera movement while you’re inside buildings and dungeons—and I imagine even two months won’t be enough to fix everything, but hey, it’s an ambitious game. After playing it for this long, I’m very high on its potential.

They have two months, I think if they are not hitting their potential yet they are fast running out of runway to get the flight going!

Quote
The writing is, uh, very JRPG. Some lines are funny. Others are interesting. Others don’t feel like they were spoken out loud by a single English-speaking human until the voice actors started recording.

This kind of made me sad.  After very high quality writing in stuff like The Witcher 3 I just don't think RPGs (even JRPGs) have a good reason to have bad dialogue.

Quote
I came into PAX not really knowing what to expect from Final Fantasy XV. I left more optimistic than I’ve ever been. It’s got so much potential.

They are two months out!  A lot of potential is what you have when you are in the alpha or beta stage - not in the final polishing stage!

Anyway I hope many of you take the plunge and can tell me if it is worth picking up.

You know, I might buy that if they had shown that kind of thoughtful planning with the Wii U, or New 3ds, etc.  Really they just sometimes seem dumb in these big decisions.

One thing I was struck by was the lack of anything the rest of the year - well except for the huge one (Pokemon.)  I wish there would have been something I could be excited about buying.

In the end all I did was play Rise of the Tomb Raider for awhile.  And I couldn't remember half the controls.  I need to start focusing.  I have been playing Deus Ex and before that Uncharted so going back to Tomb Raider was confusing.

Don't get me wrong I love the game, in fact I love all three but I think I need to focus on just one of them so I can "stay in the groove"

I will add that I have found "Let's Play" videos to be great.  My job is rather dull often and I have dual monitors so I can keep one watching a Youtube playthrough pretty easily.

I know in my heart that I will never play Dark Souls 3, Legend of Grimrock 2, or Valkyria Chronicles.  I know I would like to but I won't so I can at least see the game fully with Let's Plays.

Not personally.  I tend to lose interest after 5-10 hours though.  Something about getting over that hump just seems like work.

Get into Overwatch for free next weekend

On PlayStation 4 and Xbox One

Quote
Overwatch is going free-to-play next weekend, from Sept. 9-12. Blizzard Entertainment is giving PlayStation 4 and Xbox One owners a chance to try its first new franchise in years, with access to all 22 characters and every available map.

During the free period, players can earn Loot Boxes and level up characters for as long as they like. There’s no registration required to get into the game, and the full Overwatch experience is open for business from 9 a.m. PT on Friday, Sept. 9 until 4 p.m. PT on Monday, Sept. 12. If the Overwatch newbie falls hard for the game during the free weekend, they can pick up the Origins Edition release and maintain all of their progress.

SInce they do them from time to time how about if we just put news in one thread?

Anyway today they had one.  here is a Polygon roundup

Some good looking stuff unfortunately nothing coming out anytime soon.  I am rather sad that Dragon Quest 8 is being delayed until 2017.  I was quite looking forward to it.
