I've come to the conclusion that all the white/gold people met in secret Thursday morning and agreed to pretend to see white & gold just to mess with the rest of us.

+1

I squint, I change the lighting at my desk, etc and I still can't see white gold.

Sad but 84 great years is pretty wonderful.

I should try more of the Lego games.  We have played and loved Lego City: Undercover on the Wii U but none of the rest.  Still it was a blast.
5  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Batman: Arkham Knight is rated M on: February 24, 2015, 09:44:02 PM
I don't really care one way or the other if it works in the story/world they are creating.  I find that often times developers put in adult content to seem to satisfy some childish urge to be dirty.  If often feels out of place and silly.  However they have made this world of Batman pretty dark so I can see it fitting.

I still wouldn't mind an open world game like this - using Batman even - that was kid friendly.  While Batman's world is getting darker he has a no kill ethic which would seemingly be kid friendly but they put in a lot of other stuff that kills that.  I feel like there are not any good open world games which I can play with the kids.  It seems like a niche that could be met.

I am sure glad those superheroes have secret identities.  Otherwise everyone would know who they are!

Don't get me wrong, I know that big stars want their faces seen but it just kind of seems silly to talk about doing the whole upcoming Civil War storyline when everyone knows the identities of all of them already!

11  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / What skills will be obsolete in 50 years? on: February 24, 2015, 05:48:38 PM
Saw this topic over at io9 and thought it was neat.

What do you think will be obsolete in 50 years?

For me it is cursive.  I am a working professional and I can't remember the last time I needed to write something over a paragraph in length in cursive.  I write quick notes to myself or others but nothing longer than a sentence.

I also think that driving will be gone soon.  Heck when I was growing up my mom had me learn to drive a stick shift because she thought it was important.  Now something like 98% of cars sold are automatic.  In 50 more years they will all be self driving.

What is on your list?
12  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: This Is Fun Pt 3: This Time It's Personal! (possibly NSFW) on: February 24, 2015, 04:39:54 PM
I thought these were cool because of how complex the setup is for a stunt driver.

13  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Sid Meier's Starships on: February 24, 2015, 02:53:04 PM
Polygon has an article up about some time they got to play with the game

Quote
Even in this small demo, the variety of missions was exciting to see. Once, my task was to secure three orbital sentry stations from marauder attack. With only two capital ships, it was a cat-and-mouse game, with me chasing nimble fighters and heavily armed frigates from point to point. In another mission, I had to stop a single thief from leaving the system with secret documents. I used a volley of torpedoes to funnel him toward my fast-attack ships, trapped him in an asteroid field and gunned him down. In yet another I found myself in a pitched battle against a superior force, and had to scatter my fleet using jump gates while my fighters launched risky hit-and-run attacks on the enemy's flanks.

Every engagement felt unique, and the generous maneuverability of even the largest ships meant that combat rarely bogged down and become a war of attrition.

Quote
Starships' low-poly art style and use of matte paintings over in-engine cutscenes is sure to turn off some players. She isn't the prettiest game out there, to be sure. But as far as strategic gameplay goes, she's got it where it counts.

As annoying as they are I know it is more like the last gasps of a dying person.  Desperate to cling to life they will try anything.  They just don't serve a purpose in the current retail world.

However I remember how cool they used to be so I just feel bad for them.

Lynch seeks 'I'm just here' trademark

Quote
Seattle Seahawks running back Marshawn Lynch is a man of few words, but when he utters those words, he sometimes trademarks them.

Lynch last week filed for the trademark to the phrase "I'm just here so I won't get fined" with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

Lynch famously uttered the phrase as the answer to more than 20 questions on Super Bowl XLIX media day before walking off the podium.

When I give to something like this I don't expect to have strings attached.  Let the parents have it, let the creator of the crowd fund have it, whatever.  I give because I want to.

Wouldn't bother you a bit if the Tragic Child Funeral fund you were donating to turned out to be the Tragic Child Funeral but Mainly Buy Some Guy a Lamborghini fund?

Not really, as long as the funeral was fully covered.  Once the money goes into the "pot" so to speak then I can't really say which of the donations paid for the funeral and which bought the car.  Perhaps a 100% of my donation bought casket and flowers.  It was the other people's money that went for the car.  Who knows.

Now I would hope that having that kind of tragedy and seeing people's generosity the family would pass what along to others but I don't give it with the condition that it must be passed along.

More seriously I am another Eric.  I have been here since near the begining and you have all made my job pretty easy.  It is a nice group of people that have found there way here.

I have become a console only gamer mostly because I am too cheap to update my PC.  I remember cutting out the side of one of my PCs to put in plexiglass and a cool light setup.  Now I haven't updated for years.  Of course with 2 kinds (6 and Cool it isn't like I have finished a game anyway so I guess I all works out in the end!

From comments and reviews you can't go wrong with Dragon Age: Inquisition 90% 81 hours of play, Shadow of Mordor 86% 14 hours of gameplay, or Far Cry 4 84% 16 hours of gameplay.

Tough choices but it is a good situation to be in!

Since they are different kinds of games perhaps you should decide what you are in the mood for.  A pure RPG with tactical elements, an action RPG, or a shooter.

Can't find that New 3DS anywhere? Can't find that Amiibo either?

Reality Check: Nintendo is Awful. Seriously, they have no damn idea what they're doing nowadays. Although according to comments it seems it's a NOA issue and not Nintendo as a whole. Who knows.

I don't think I understand what makes Nintendo terrible.  I stood outside starting at 4 in the morning to get a PS2 many years ago.  I bought an Xbox 360 from someone in Canada because there were none in the US.  I have paid upwards of $100 for games which are in short supply.

This is not something about Nintendo.  It is how the market works, or at least how we have let it work.

I would buy Lee's first because I don't know why he is selling for less than Amazon's lowest price and including games, but if it is gone..

I have a 3DS XL Red/black for sale.  Amazon says the cheapest is $119 so I will sell it for $115.  I will come out a bit ahead because Amazon won't take a cut and you will come out a bit ahead because it is slightly cheaper.

Nothing particularly exciting to say about it.  It is a in great shape, comes with the default 4GB memory card and .....ummm it is pretty.... smile

PM me if your interested.

It seems so silly.  I can still take a quick look at the "recommendation system" rather than read a full review.  This just makes it harder for something like Metacritic.

Legend of Grimrock iPad gameplay first look

Quote
Hello all! The blog has been silent for sometime but do not fear, we have been hard at work. The long overdue iPad version of Grimrock 1 is finally nearing completion and it has entered the closed beta testing stage. This means that the game is playable from start to finish and all features have been implemented. Juha Pinola, the man responsible for the conversion, is currently busy fixing the remaining bugs, smoothing the hard edges and balancing the game.

I can't wait.  I wonder if they will have to tweak some of the puzzles since they required timing which I whtink would be hard with touch controls.

Also I hope I can switch the sides so movement is on the left!

Xenoblade Chronicles: 3ds vs. Wii comparison video

40  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [Wii U] Xenoblade Chronicles X on: February 09, 2015, 03:06:46 PM
Just so we are all clear

This thread is about the new Wii U game Xenoblad Chroicles X which is very different than the original Wii game which is being released on the 3DS Circle (I mention because it will only run on the new 3Ds with the right nub/circle thingy.. I really wish they would call these models something besides "new" Nintendo 3ds.  That doesn't tell me squat about what it has on it)

Now on the subject of Xenoblade Chronicles I have posted a link to a video comparison of the Wii version vs. the "new" 3ds version over here  In short it looks very good on the 3ds but better on the Wii (by a small bit) so play it on the Wii if you have it.

I would imagine the market will cool for the Wii version once the 3ds version is out so it might even be reasonably priced!
