Dammit I swore I wasn't gonna get one of these things.  But after playing it at best buy, and reading all the awesome comments here I'm probably going to cave today slywink

It helps that I just got a nice fat raise at work and a decent tax return too.
82  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Fringe Premiere on: February 23, 2012, 06:52:41 PM
I absolutely loved fringe, but something about this season has kinda turned me off on it.  I've got the last 4 episodes sitting on DVR and really can't seem to find the interest in catching up.  While I'm intrigued by what they did with the Peter storyline this season, I think I'm missing the dynamic of the "original" team.

It's interesting to read that they are getting quite a bit of developer support.  That's good news for them.  Didn't seem like they had too many great 3rd party titles for the Wii.  Getting some of the big franchises should help a lot.  I'm pretty curious to see what the system capable of when it hits.

So is recruiting monsters basically just random chance?  I read on an FAQ that it's pretty much mandatory to recruit a Pulsework Knight early in the game so you can create some of the SEN-based paradigms.  I've now fought about a dozen of them - most of those battles with 5-star ratings - but have yet to recruit one.  Not sure what I'm doing wrong.

It's not totally necessary, but if you can get the pulsework knight and then max out his level (20).  It makes most of the early encounters super easy.  He'll attract the attention of the mobs and soak all the damage.
85  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Re: Star Wars: The Old Republic announced on: February 17, 2012, 11:29:14 PM
One of the things it is, a fantastic story.  Bioware has proven, at least to me, that you can weave a really good story into an MMO.  I've really enjoyed that aspect of it.   Also , much like their other games, I felt as though I could really develop how my character interacts with this world.  For that to happen in an MMO setting is fantastic as well.  I think Bioware set some nice bars as far as interweaving story and character development into an MMO world.
86  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Re: Star Wars: The Old Republic announced on: February 16, 2012, 06:19:35 PM
One other thing that sort of struck me as I was thinking about the game earlier.  In WoW, I felt like I was in a world at war.  Zones seem designed to have the players criss-cross a bit, so I was always seeing horde camps / players as I was running about.

I never felt that or saw that in Star Wars.  I know there was another side, but as a republic player I never saw them.  Never noticed their camps.  Although maybe that started happening at later levels?  I guess it left me feeling like I know we are at war with the empire because I'm being told we are, but never felt like the world itself necessarily reflected that.

I will say though, I loved the stories Bioware was telling. Playing with my wife I got to see both the Knight(which I played) and the consular(which she played) and both stories we're well done.  Also enjoyed a lot of the side areas.  Thinking after we take a break for a while we'll probably come back and finish the stories out at least.

Wife and I cancelled today as well.  Hit our mid-30's and for some reason the drive to keep playing stopped.  I enjoyed it up to about 30 though.  Once the planets got bigger, it seems like they became more stale.  Can't quite put my finger on why.  We might return in a few months time when the burnout goes away and we have more playtime again.

Got a new background image in there and the site is much easier to read now.  Fixed the bios (not bio's) page, thanks for the catch on that.  We update on Fridays so if you want to keep reading check us out we'll be posting new pages then.   We'd love to go faster but we all work full time have families etc...

Thanks for the kind words all.  We knew about the text and are working today on a new background to clean that up a bit.  Great point about the bios I will probably edit those up.

In fact just found this:
According to Wikipedia, for a TV show to enter daily syndication, the minimum number of episodes required would be 88, or 4 full seasons.

However the magic number for half hour sitcoms is usually 100.
93  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Chuck Season 4 discussion (spoilers!!!) on: January 16, 2012, 10:13:16 PM
I heard an interview on the radio with Zachary Levi not to far back.  I don't recall the exact number but I'm pretty sure he said the syndication number is now actually 80 or 88 or something to that effect.
94  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Re: Star Wars: The Old Republic announced on: November 29, 2011, 01:14:11 AM
I have a feeling the game will probably fizzle in a few months as well.  It's a great game, and i'm really enjoying it.  The story stuff is really well done.  The problem I foresee is it really seems focused on the single player aspects more than the MMO stuff.  My individual story is great, but what is the overall world story?  What is there to invest my character in this universe long term?  Maybe that stuff shows up later in the story and will prove me wrong, I hope so.

I played several classes up to almost 10 in beta, really enjoyed the gameplay and story, I just have a feeling once my story is done so am I.

Go into the video options and set the shadow quality slider all the way down.  The game ran poorly on my wifes machine , once we did that it ran super smooth.  Her specs are similar to yours

I felt that way about Tython too.  It felt like you could only go 10 feet in either direction off the main path before you hit a wall or cliff.  Felt very on the rails.  I am hoping that it opens up on other worlds, sadly coruscant felt about the same.

97  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Just bought the kids 3DSs for Christmas. What else do I need? on: November 11, 2011, 10:19:25 PM
I believe there is a package deal for about 15-20 that gives you screen protectors and extra stylus(es?).  The screen protector is a must, the stylus will scratch up that screen without one.

We sold ours so I'm not totally up on the games, but Zelda and Pilotwings were really good.

Also Mario Kart and a Mario Land game are coming in the next few weeks and will probably make good game gifts.

99  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Nintendo 3ds on: October 25, 2011, 05:12:06 PM
We traded ours in over the weekend and my son got about $200 in credit. He picked up Skylanders, the new Ratchet and Clank and pre-ordered the new Sonic.  I think he'll have a lot more fun with those than watching the 3DS collect dust.  There was a time in our house full of consoles that the kids played their DS's more than anything else.  They don't touch them any more.  I think the most telling sign of their demise was on our last two vacations, they didn't take them, opting instead to play games on the ipod touch or ipad.  Previously they took their DS's everywhere.

I bit on this today.  I've been playing WoW pretty much off and on since it released.  My wife and I still like to spend some sunday afternoons playing and leveling characters together.  Figured another year and I get diablo 3?  Might as well do it.
101  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Nintendo 3ds on: October 22, 2011, 06:04:20 AM
My son saved up and bought a 3ds for his birthday.  This was back when it released.  We played it a lot that first month.  Think it's collected lots of dust since.  He plays more games now on the iPad or iPod we have.  Plus it's much easier on the wallet to spring for a less than $5 game than a $40 game.

We're pretty much thinking of trading it in/selling it at this point.

Couple questionies...
*If I get the retail (boxed disc version), does the DRM mean I have to have the disc in every time I play, or is it maybe just once to verify it or something?

You put it in when you install it, and then never touch it again.  This is the first box game i've purchased on the PC in a long time. Mainly because it comes with so many awesome things.  A map, a mini guide etc...

Second worst thing about blighttown is blighttown.  I'm seriously hating this place with a passion.  Too many fights where the camera decides to position itself behind a wall or above a ceiling.  Way too many hard to see holes in the floor.  probalby the most frustrating level in the game so far for me.

107  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [360/PS3] Dark Souls on: October 12, 2011, 09:28:42 PM
I have to say the game has really sucked me in.  Haven't really played a game that has me thinking about it all day long and wanting to get back to it in a very long time.

Last night while traversing the sewers I fell down a hole and encountered the "frogs" for the first time.  The cursed me and I insta died and started back at the bonfire.  I had to work my way back to the person that sells the remove curse item, then I headed back down there.

This time I didn't fall into the area, I jumped the hole and worked my way down slowly.  I was acturally scared running around fighting those things.  Made it through and was patting myself on the back trying to get back to the bonfire when a player invaded and I had to fight him.  I fought him off, got lots of souls and a nice shield.  Made it to the bonfire and did a major victory dance.
Can't say I've played a game that actually makes me tense exploring and playing like this one does.  Followed up by a nice surge of adrenaline when you make it through something hard.

It's digital crack. icon_biggrin

The success of that fight seems to be whether or not you can survive the first 5 minutes.

First 5 minutes? The trick is surviving the first 10 seconds! Once those have passed and you're still alive, the rest of the fight is easy. By the time 5 minutes have passed you'll already be calming down and proudly posting a message on GT that you finally beat that damned Capra Demon. slywink

LOL good point!!  icon_biggrin

I am having ZERO luck with the Capra demon still. I think I have tried at least 10 times - I have watched all the videos and know what I need to do.
Actually doing it is another thing. The minute I enter the arena I am either swarmed by his dogs - or his 1st hit nails me to the ground and then the dogs take over.
I managed to kill one dog (once) and each and every subsequent time I shit the bed!

I even tried to summon last night but gave up after 5 mins of waiting.
I might head to the swamp/forest and try the boss battle there to get the upgraded armor. Maybe that will help?

The success of that fight seems to be whether or not you can survive the first 5 minutes.  Running up the steps as quickly as you can helps.  The dogs will chase you up and you can dispatch them while he slowly climbs up after.  You've probably seen all that on the videos though.  I know I tried it ALOT and getting to those steps seemed to be a lot of luck.

I did it in the knight starter armor with the heater shield.  I have the drake sword though, which does a lot of damage:)
Summoning someone will definitely help too. I eventually had to do that. The guy I summoned hit him with ranged magic while I "tanked" him.

How big are the planets?  Part of the problem I've had with the last few MMO's I've tried is how small they felt.  I want something that feels big.  And something where if I start multiple characters I can go through different content.
112  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Re: Star Wars: The Old Republic announced on: September 20, 2011, 03:28:16 AM
If we judge the success of an MMO based on its forums then WoW should've failed a long time ago slywink

It is interesting though it seems like SWTOR, more than most MMO's I can think of recently, has a lot of people wanting it to fail.  So many doom predictions out there.  I wonder what it is about this particular MMO that seems to be drawing more early hate?

Small rant , but I just can't stand the elitism surrounding these games.  I tried getting into this recently.  Decided to play co-op against the PC missions to help learn the game before going into pvp matches.  Only to be told to fuck off by my team mates repeatedly as I was trying to learn the game.

Would it really be that hard for people to actually try to explain the game too a noob?  I guess typing fuck you into the chat window repeatedly is easier...
