401  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: So, my non-gaming parents played a Wii... on: November 30, 2006, 03:37:32 AM

I understand that parents and girlfriends love Wii sports.  But will they go out and actually spend the $250 on a Wii?

I'm not trying to to be anti-Wii.  I just think non-gamers liking Wii sports and them actually going out to purchase the console are 2 different things.  I still think $249 is still to high to get true non-gamers to actually buy one.   Now when it gets to $149....sure.

I agree here.  We took our Wii to our in-laws on Thanksgiving and they had a blast with it, bowling and golfing and such.  But they will most likely never go out and buy one of their own.  I'm sure they'll be happy to play ours when they visit though  icon_biggrin icon_biggrin

Got an hour to wait myself.  Reading all the reviews here on the site and getting ansy waiting for it slywink  Gamestop was supposed to sell them last night at midnight but called yesterday afternoon to say they we're cancelling the midnight plans and just opening early this morning frown
403  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: PS3 Launch Thread on: November 09, 2006, 05:33:10 AM
I'd say it was closer to the top one.  In the kiosk they had it standing upright and it looked really really tall.  Don't get me wrong, it's a sexy looking machine, just big slywink

I got a chance to play a kiosk that was set up at Best Buy today. I have to say I was very impressed.  I forget the name but I played an off road racing game, and watched a video for Lair.  The graphics blew me away.   I'd have to say they're probably better than anything I've seen on my 360 so far except maybe Gears of War.   The only downsides I saw was the system is HUGE and the controller is still the same ole PS2 controller, except the L2 and R2 buttons are now triggers.  The controller is not terrible, but i love the comfort of the 360 controller.

They also had a Wii sitting next to it, but unfortunately it was not playable frown

Also picking up Phantasy Star Universe for the 360.
409  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Anyone else give up computer gaming for the console recently? on: October 12, 2006, 11:02:59 PM
I'm leaning that direction myself.  I used to be a heavy console gaming until many years ago when my friend dragged me kicking and screaming to the PC gaming world.  What hooked me on PC gaming at the time was online multiplayer.  Which , at the time, wasn't available on the consoles.  Now with my 360 I'm getting my online gaming craving on the console.  I've only fired up my PC in recent months to check this board slywink and play WoW.  Hell I own BF2 on the PC and end up playing the demo more on the 360.  Since I've been on them more I've discovered all the games I've missed the past few years and have been really playing the heck out of the consoles again lately.

I suspect I'll probably mainly use my PC for MMO's and the consoles will be come my main source to feed my gaming habit in the coming year.

Sorry I jumped the gun there, didn't see the post on the gamespot page slywink
411  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Wii and PS3 preorders begin tomorrow. on: October 10, 2006, 01:54:20 AM
Is this through gamestop, or somewhere else?  I'm only curious because I'm good friends with the manager at the gamestop near my house and she told me at their managers conference last week that they we're informed there would be absolutely no preordering systems of any kind this time around.
412  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Good ps2 game for 4 yr old? on: October 09, 2006, 03:39:05 PM
Lego Star Wars 1 and 2 are great for kids.  I have a 4 1/2 year old as well and he plays the heck out of those. My son also really likes Jak and Daxter and the Ratchet and Clank games.  He can play them fairly well.  With most games though he tends to play for a bit and then wants to watch me play so I try to get games that will interest both of us.  Also, if you want to play games with him I highly recommend Xmen Legends 1 and 2.  They're basically multiplayer hack n slash adventure games that you can easily play together.  I tend to stay away from the games that are based on kids movies, they usually end up sucking pretty bad.  Definitely check out a review or maybe rent them first.

Gonna try to work heavily on Enchanted Arms, hoping to beat it before FFXII hits the stores, and maybe use it as trade in credit for that game slywink
Might get in some NHL 07 time too, and happily watch the real NHL fire up it's season this weekend!!
414  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Re: As if they haven't made enough money...[WoW Expansion] on: October 05, 2006, 01:15:40 AM
Looks like the CE edition is $30 more than the regular:

http://www.gamestop.com/product.asp?product%5Fid=646859

But it comes with 2 starter packs of the card game so that may make it worth the price difference depending on what those go for seperately.

Didn't get any Okami time in really.  I spent most of my gaming time perfecting my NHL skills.  And trying to get closer to 60 in WoW.

Hopefully some Okami sprinkled with some NHL 07 action.

As noted in the linked article, the original MSRP was 62,790 yen ($536) and is now the equivalent of $430.  Hopefully we will be seeing something similar announced for the US and rest of the world.

I don't know quite what to make of this (assuming this comes out in the US as well). Now both systems have HDMI (no Blu-Ray movie gimped version), and there's a serious price difference between the two consoles. Now, $170 gives you what, a bigger HD and a few other ways to save your content? The $600 version isn't looking too popular anymore, IMHO...

I think the $600 version also includes a built in wireless network adapter whereas the cheaper version does not.

I find it funny that $50 is such a giant difference. It's only $50 (or the price of a single game). And you're getting a game (albit a simple, yet fun looking one that shows off the controller quite well) with that $250.

Oh, and I voted IN!

I'm IN but I can understand why people may not like the extra $50.  Personally I'd much rather have the system not bundled with the game at $200.  Then I can spend the $50 on a game of MY choosing rather than the one they decided to put in the box.

I think I'm just going to wait until it hits $20 and pick it up.  But I'd be glad to hear some more impressions   icon_smile

Probably not a bad idea to wait till it hits $20.  I played through a few more levels tonight.  I'm having more fun with it as it goes.  The boss battles so far have been the best part of the game.  Well designed characters for the bosses, plus a bit of variety in how you fight them.  I gave up on meelee fighting all together, although there is a boss you have to use it on.  The main negatives I give the game are repetitive enemies.  You fight a lot of the same soldiers and dog creatures.  And in typical Square fashion there are a LOT of cinema's.  One level was so bad you'd fight 2 enemies, hit a movie, take a step fight and enemy and get another movie, rinse and repeat.  I'm still enjoying the story though, and the game play gets a bit more fun once you get used to it and get further in the game.

Bottom line though wait till it's a little cheaper.
427  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Final Fantasy VII Dirge of Cerberus Impressions on: August 17, 2006, 02:54:03 AM
Didn't see a thread already started for this so here goes:

Picked this up and played for about an hour so far, beating the first mission.  While the game isn't perfect I think it's better than most of the reviews it's been getting.  The best parts about the game so far have been the story, the cutscenes and the customization.  The cutscenes so far have been some of the best Square has done.  The voice acting is pretty well done too.  The designs on the characters, particularly the new enemies is really well done.

The gameplay is where the game gets mediocre.  It feels like they wanted to make a pure FPS, but somewhere along the way they decided they wanted a game more like Devil May Cry.  The result is an FPS with some action elements like kicking, jumping and combos thrown in.  It doesn't play as well as DMC and doesn't play quite as good as a pure FPS.  It's not bad and still pretty fun though. The weapon customization shines, however.  You get various components you can add to your weapon to customize it to your liking.  In the first level I found different barrel types, sniper scopes, and materia that you can add.  The materia add spell effects to the weapon.  There are also different weapons to be found and you can upgrade the overall weapon.

All in all I'd say it was worth the purchase if your really into FFVII.  If not rent it first.  I'll post some more impressions after I put some more time into it tomorrow.
