TES Online going subscription free on 3/17, but you still will need to buy the base game and PS4/XB1 versions launching in June.   So glad I missed the hype on this one.  I might pick this up in June to play if they don't have micro-transaction

Well so far it's cosmetic choices only and it seems to be following the GW2 model (buy game, get everything, store is mostly cosmetic, no monthly sub).  I played a couple months at launch and it's improved in a lot of ways since then.  The early bugs are gone, some of the earlier quests have been enhanced and expanded, animation and combat is smoother and it's had some quality of life fixes.  It's also nice right now because the pop is probably higher than it's been since launch and the early towns are booming again.  The only problem I see with the console versions is the lack of addons/mods the PC version has...that and the cost.  You can get the imperial version for PC for around $25 on eBay right now.

If you buy games at Best Buy then you should get this asap.  Remember it applies to any new game regardless of price so for Black Friday I got the discount applied on top of all of the special prices.  I don't buy a lot of games at BB but it still paid for itself in the first 4 months.
3  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Far Cry 3 vs Far Cry 4 on: December 27, 2014, 07:21:38 PM
At least with 4 you don't know what training he's had...his mother was involved with the movement and his dad basically started the movement.  It's possible he has had extension firearm and martial arts training while growing up.  In 3 you knew the only thing the main lead did was lift a beer and go jogging while maybe playing high school football.  Total douche with friends to match.

I really like 4 a lot and it fixed many of the problems I had with 3.  The auto drive alone is worth it.

7  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Re: ArchAge on: August 09, 2014, 01:14:46 AM
I've been playing the alpha and the only way I can describe it is a mix of UO and Guild Wars 2 with the questionable GW2 bits stripped and replaced with WoW (or EQ2) mechanics.  None of the stuff I hated from GW2 like auto leveling down in lower areas, no clear classes, etc.  No instances which means the start zones are wall to wall people in the early areas mob camping though this goes away about 30 mins in.  Open world housing.  Large group and zone PvP influence late in the game.  No real end game because there's no real end to the translates into a decent sandbox at 50 (where the final game will release, not 55 like the Korean version) which may frustrate people.  You get a lot of goodies early (I had a mount, glider and boat by 15) and you level quick.  Still has some of the Korean grind but Trion has really done a good job adding quests and storylines for at least the early part of the game.  No good reason for Alts on the same server due to skill trees being available to all and labor points shared on all characters on that server.

Much better than I ever expected, definitely not for everyone, hardcore raiders who hate PvP should avoid.

Well, the thing is - do you want a person without Bartering to be doing all your buying and selling? Because of that, the 'money is not pooled' makes some sense.

From what I've read only the person who has the highest bartering needs to initiate the conversation with the keep the discount/bonus/etc when switching between characters based on who the first one to talk was.

I was really hoping for some basic UI mods to come pretty quickly though.  A bag or inventory mod would be great.

Just throwing this out for now but I'm looking for any Warhammer 40k...models, armor, buildings, terrain, etc.  Doesn't matter if it's new/old, unpainted or badly painted.  Will consider buying but prefer trading...plenty of games, etc.  I'm not interested in the $1500 master painted 10,000 point armies unless you just want to give it a new home smile

Saw it today and it was ok...good but not great.  It would have been much better if they had cut about 30 mins of non-monster parts out in the middle.
11  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Re: Elder Scrolls Online on: April 14, 2014, 10:05:16 PM
I've had very few issues...mostly some slight lag and a couple quests I had to log out and back in to trigger.  While I really enjoy the game I am really starting to see the console roots and it's clear it was designed for a controller.  The UI, even with add-ons, is horrid and slow and the 6 (5 plus ultimate) skill bar totally sucks.  It's sad because there's a great game underneath and it's overshadowed by the UI and lack of any real modern AAA conveniences.

In short:  Love the game, hate the UI, despise the limitations, sick of console conversions for MMOs (where the majority of players are PC)

I haven't had any issues with the update (and loving the Titanfall beta btw) but my next step is to split my HDMI signal to go to the cable box and the xbox.  I have the spare cable now and already have the splitter so I should be good to go.  Not optimal but the wife hates it going through the xbox so it's a nice compromise.  Would be a hell of a lot easier if they had included powered off pass through for the HDMI.

If you have a guaranteed delivery date and it does not arrive by that time, you can get a free month of Prime (up to 12 per year).

In general, if you're ever having problems with Amazon you should contact them.  They're likely to do something for your trouble, and hopefully fix the problem for the future.

I've tried this multiple times (I had four late shipments in Nov and Dec) and at best I received an "ehhh, oops but it happens" canned response.  Even asking for more has gone no where and I've never received a free month of prime even though I've been a prime member for years.
20  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: LTTP - Supernatural on: February 05, 2014, 12:07:07 AM
Like any long running show it has great seasons, good seasons and ok seasons.  I don't remember the first season being great but it was interesting enough to keep me watching (a lot like Buffy was) and it does improve.  They tend to do better with monster of the week shows as the focus with the season long arc being a distant second.  It does have some legs on it though because it's still on the air and currently in the 9th season.

I'd vote yes but maybe not in one long continuous sitting.
21  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Amazon Prime price hike coming? on: February 04, 2014, 09:15:14 PM
I still love it but it's no where near as good as it used to be.  Their videos on demand isn't really growing and the 2 day shipping is actually 3-4 day 50% of the time.  I don't see how they're adding any value while still wanting to increase prices...maybe drop the super cheap mom and student $29 prime memberships instead.

I have it and really enjoyed it.  I would place in it a nice 7-ish range out of 10 for a score but I can say it's one of the few Xbox one games that truly looks next-gen.  Yes it gets repetitive, the boob physics are lol and the ending was drawn out (hate QTEs though only having two choices helped me quite a bit) but it was enjoyable and I have a friend who's planning on teaming with me on all of the multi-player arenas.  I was hesitant to buy it with all of the negative press but I'm glad I was a short but good game.  I'd love to see some single player DLC added though and the talk of adding animals to the arenas sounds interesting.

It came across as "meh" to me too.  Unstable, floaty and it felt like I was playing Oblivion with a bunch of strangers running around opening my chests and urns smile  I'll be giving it another try in a few months but nothing from this weekend gave me the must buy feeling.

I played the Diablo 3 beta on the PS4 machines at Blizzcon and really liked the new PS4's slightly bigger than the PS3, nice buttons and much lighter.  I am a little biased though because I grew up on the PS1/PS2 controllers and prefer that style even with large hands.

I just started playing this a few days ago. Are all servers pretty laggy or should I be shopping around finding servers with better pings?

The game shows my connection as "excellent" but the latency meter in the game is showing anywhere from 1400-2000. While I can certainly play that way it is annoying to see people jump around a lot.

So before I get too entrenched in the current server should I be looking at others or do they all have the same issue due to the over population?

All of the NA servers are in Canana...I believe Montreal.  So if you're on a NA server I don't see the ping being any better by switching servers.

It's getting to the point where I'm really dreading any time a required dungeon rolls around.  I don't have 1/10 the experience that most folks do, and when you get to the higher level dungeons, people expect you to know exactly what you're doing.  The group I was with kept asking me why I wasn't using macros for this or that, and I wouldn't even know where to start with that stuff.  It simply hasn't been needed for 99% of my solo play, but people get pissed when you're not entirely up to speed on the other 1% that is required grouping.

that's my worry too.  it's not like I'm going to Google a dungeon before I go in.

Why not?  Even as dps I look up the dungeon the first time I run it.  It's not like you ever need to do it more than once per dungeon and it makes everything go smoother, faster and with less wipes.  Also keeps me from looking like an idiot when I wipe doing something stupid that I could have easily avoided.

Also don't understand the tank have instant queues.  Honestly if you get a group of assholes or jerks who pull for you or wipe on trash then leave and get a new group.  It's a lot different as dps when I've waited 40-45 minutes just to get in and if I leave then it's another 40-45 mins.  Personally I'd love for the tank to say he's new and to have some patience vs some of the tanks I get that do the wrong thing over and over and over and refuse to learn.

didn't seem that bad to begin with for repairs.

It wasn't bad leveling up...the problem was you would actually lose money just from leveling and repairs once you got in the upper 30s and on.  Item durability is actually based on xp gained and not so much from dying or fighting.
37  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Re: [PC/PS3] Final Fantasy XIV (Characters/Servers in first post) on: September 09, 2013, 08:59:24 PM
I found the best way to cut costs on teleporting is to set my home to one of the central towns (like Horizon) and then set all three cities to preferred locations.  I can "hearth" back to Horizon and teleport to any of the three towns for around 100-200gil each.  It also has the benefit of being able to ride back to at least one of the towns for basically nothing (I think Uldum is 15 gil to ride back from Horizon).  Should work well at least up to 30ish.
38  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Re: [PC/PS3] Final Fantasy XIV (Characters/Servers in first post) on: September 05, 2013, 12:34:42 AM
I tried it earlier (4 est) and just now (8:30 est) and I went in right away both times.  Much, much better than before.  The official posts say the server capacity has increased from 5000 to 7500 and it seems like the queues handle over 1000 now (vs 400 earlier).  The real test will be this weekend but I'm much happier than I was this past weekend.

Yeah, they're a complete clusterfuck today.  Going on two hours now and still haven't been able to get in.  Combination of error 1017 (World is full, try again later), error 10102 (disconnected from server), and the launcher not being able to update the NA/EU world list.

I'm fairly understanding of launch issues, but this is getting a little silly.  They've basically admitted they know what the problems are, but we're going on a week now and they have yet to do anything about it.  If I didn't know from beta that I really liked the game, there's no way I would have put up with this nonsense to try and play it.  Makes me wonder how many new players they're losing as a result.

I love the game.  I want to play really bad.  The game has pretty much burned through all of the good will I'm willing to extend.  I've talked it up to my wife for months only to have almost every attempt fail for her logging in.  I can't get in during the mornings, late evening or weekends.  I know of people where I work already walking away from it.  I'm sick of his apology and sick of no lobby server, no NA/EU server lists and the 1012 error.  They knew back in Beta 4 this was going to happen.  They knew the first day of early release this was going to happen.  They had the pre-order numbers months in advance for at least the NA/EU markets (hey, we're not the JP and asia market so we don't really count though).  They continue to ignore such basic fundamentals like a fucking AFK kick...and are actively fighting with the community about why they don't need one.  Really?  I want this game to succeed but if the entire executive board for this game quit today and gave it to someone...anymore more qualified I'd throw a party on the off chance they might care enough to start fixing it and not posting on twitter about how sorry they are.

As it is I've yet to get on today at all starting at 9:30a EST.  I'm almost embarrassed to admit I'm still trying.

EDIT:  I tried off and on for 14 hours today to logon.  Not 14 straight but there were plenty of times where I spent 15+ minutes doing nothing but reading the web and hitting zero.  To be honest that's pretty much inexcusable for a MMO in 2013 especially with the absolute total lack of communication from SQEX today.  I guess all of their leadership was at PAX celebrating their "successful" launch and signing pictures.

I can not and will not recommend this game to anyone until the problems are fixed.  Anyone on the fence should wait.  I would strongly recommend that no one sets up subscriptions either until you can at least login in successfully on any given day to the server of your choice.  Maybe that will be this week (though it seems like NA/EU is getting the very short end of the stick with the upgrades) but I just don't believe they are capable of supporting this game at this level anymore.

Some of the questions I've seen  (and answers) :

1.  The mount is 2000, the next rank in your grand company is also 2000.  Armor at the low 20s level starts around 1100 each.  All in seals.
2.  The retainer is how you sell items in the auction house and it's also your bank (extra seven tabs not counting what you have listed in the AH).  You can have two, they're free and can sell in different cities (taxes and fees can be different).  There are summoning bells in each marketplace and inn rooms.
3.  Linkshells are just chat groups (think you can belong to 7 or 9 total), free companies are guilds.
4.  Jobs get half the cross skills a class does so a level 50 job should have 5 skills available vs 10.  They are more group oriented.
5.  Do you story quest asap until 20ish when you've been through the 4 beginner instances and joined the grand company.  After you get your mount since you can use it at any level for any class.
6.  You have to be friends (and have them accept your invitation) before you can send them mail.
7.  Your leve's increment up every day at a rate of 3 (or 4?).
8.  Many cross class skills sound great but suck in reality.  One example was an archer leveling conjurer so they could get a heal spell.  Great except your MND stats suck as an archer and that heal spell that heals for 100 on your conjurer now heals for 20 on your archer.  You can cross class certain harvesting skills on your main class so you can watch for harvesting nodes.
