201  Non-Gaming / Trading Forum / Re: Several for one swap (PC games) for Xbox 360 or PS3 on: September 25, 2009, 11:40:40 AM
Still looking for trades:

I also have a Steam account I no longer (and do not intend to use) with Orange Box, HL2, Prey and Trine in addition to the games previously posted. Let me know what PS3 and/or Xbox 360 titles you may have to trade.

Thanks,

Eliot +122

The unit is brand new and works fine. It is the design decision I am questioning. Why have a device constantly engage the optical drive during game play. What not put some content on the HD so it isn't whirring incessantly!

I generally do not by the extended warranty on any products except those with a high probability of my dropping them  slywink. In the case of the 360 purchase last week I went with the two year plan. Just too many of your stories about the RROD that got to me. But it sounds like most of you with the RROD can send your units in without issue and have them returned fairly quickly. I still have three weeks to decide to keep the extended plan.

After listening to this unit for the last week it is clear that the persistent, relentless slamming of the optical drive during gameplay is part of the issue. I understand the idea of drop the disc in and ready to go but why a large portion of the game content isn't installed on the HD is beyond me. I would love to know the MTBF of the optical drive. I can almost feel myself breathe normally again after exiting a game.

Great list(s) of games to check out - thanks for the posts. I picked up several from those recommended. I am also having fun with a couple of value titles such as Dark Sector and Shadowrun, good stuff! I also bought an Xbox 360 Elite. I am now fully sucked back into the vacuum hose spiraling toward the canister!

Resistance is futile. I stopped by after work and grabbed it, nice so far. I like it! Target prices vary by store depending on availability (excess) of a particular title. So, your mileage may vary.

A reasonable deal. Anyone play this (XBOX360) and care to weigh in on the value?

Thanks,

Thanks mytocles and to all the others for the warm welcome, much appreciated. I am having a ball with the PS3 slim. Heavenly Sword, MGS 4 and some of the other titles are outstanding to say nothing of the BluRay quality. I am also enjoying the sports games. I am slowly getting used to the controls. I think I am a full fledged convert. Resistance is (was) futile!

Thanks
216  Non-Gaming / Steals and Deals / Re: Target Update on: August 29, 2009, 11:40:50 AM
I live in Meccah for Target's (Minneapolis), corporate HQ for the company. We must have three dozen Targets in the metro. According to the sales clerk supervisor clearance items (at least near me) are tied to the store, not the product. So, Dead Space was $20.98 across town but $ 14.98 where they had the 10 copies. Then it (apparently) follows a progression if they don't sell and drop a bit week to week. Your mileage may vary but I am seeing a several dollar difference game to game in certain cases. Makes the hunt a bit more fun (or frustrating).

I saw about ten copies of Dead Space for the PS3 for $ 14.98

Thanks for the nice welcome and the replies, excellent input. I have been around for quite a while, Gone Gold and OO but haven't posted much or traded in recent years. Nice to see the gaming sites are vibrant awash with good info and community.

Several titles have been mentioned that clearly would appeal to me. I played Fallout 3 on the PC and am waiting for the PS3 price drop. Or, at least the full edition coming in October (so I am told). I will have to try flowers and some of the others.

I stopped at GS again during lunch and got the Real Triggers (thanks for the tip I need all the help I can get). I picked up the Sony Blu Ray remote but haven't cracked the package yet. The reviews seemed pretty positive for it, however. Valkyria Chronicles, Uncharted: Drake's Fortune looks interesting. I am going to get Metal Gear Solid because of the recommendation (more stealth).

I am encouraged by things such as auto assist but fear I will soon need assistant operating the controller  icon_confused.

Wonder if the Gaming Trend community uses the Trading System here primarily or services such as Goozex?

Had an interesting chat with the guy at Gamestop who is clearly twenty years younger than I am. He told me he attempted to play an FPS with a keyboard and mouse and was lost. Clearly it must be how you are weaned  icon_confused.

I owned an Xbox (not 360) but was never very impressed mostly because of the PC games I had played were graphically superior (for obvious reasons). My my how things have changed? I realize this has been going on for some time (HD) but I just wasn't in the game.

Thanks again for all the tips and suggestions. I am open to more if anyone cares to share.

219  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Bought a PS3 Slim yesterday - new console gamer with questions on: August 26, 2009, 12:45:31 PM
After playing PC games for the past twenty years I took the plunge and picked up a Playstation 3 slim at Gamestop yesterday. I should have retired from gaming long ago. But the technology we dreamed about (or couldn't even imagine) playing on our C64's is here with more to come. I loaded up Heavenly Sword and sat there with the high def with almost no graphical slowdowns or glitches, cut scenes that seemed seamless with gameplay and kept repeating to myself 'this is astonishing'. I picked up several titles including Retribution Fall of Man, Virtua Tennis 3, Ratchet and Clank, Uncharted Drakes Fortune, Marvel vs Capcom (unopened downloadable game)

I have questions for the console faithful and grizzled vets:

  • 1. Keyboard and mouse support - since I am old school pc gamer I miss the mouse and keyboard. I was pleased to know connecting my standard usb keyboard and mouse worked to navigate system menus and the browser - nice! Someone talk to me about game support. I know it the whole issue of parity with other gamers out there is an issue. But those of us who are 'gray' gamers could use any help we can get keeping up with you young bucks. It is no fun spectating FPS.
    2. Someone weigh in on 'must have' games. I know this is a flavors and taste question but a few opinions would help. To narrow things a bit - games that require complex button combos are out. A few are okay but the lightning reflex, quick recall button sequences are too rough on a middle aged brain. We will see how well you do after you hit 50   icon_confused I have tended to like the open ended type RPG's (Two Worlds, Oblivion, etc). Also looking for sports games and strategy without micro management.
    3. Do you ever get over the annoyance of imprecise accuracy in FPS's? How do you improve, just keep playing them? Any tips or tricks to improve? With Fall of man the double axis stuff is rough - I miss my mouse! If I can't improve  I am destined to play all these titles on Easy if I play them at all.
    4. I really loved Oblivion for the PC. I 'peaked' with an 8600 GTS and so graphics on most of my games (back then) was medium. Is there any compelling reason to replay this game for the PS3? Is there downloadable content? How does it look graphically?
    5. I have a PSP and have been messing with Remote Play. Cool concept but I was really hoping that it might serve as a wireless controller. Save the L2 and R2 buttons I seem to be able to manage it better than a standard controller. What else can I do with the PSP/PS3 combination?
    6. Any other tips or tricks appreciated.

    Thanks,

    EliotR
