Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Which Game to Get?

If you do not want any subscription fee's then guild wars is the best choice. If you go and get a pre-order box you can play it on the upcoming beta weekend april 15th - 17th. Pre-order box is $10 at BestBuy and you get a code to invite a friend to the beta weekends.
WoW is solo friendly to a point. You wont be doing any instance dungeons by yourself, groups can be pretty easy to find. Draw back on this is a monthly fee to play.
EQ2 is not solo friendly. You need groups to do more than the simplest of quests. It has a pretty complex crafting system setup, certain crafted items are required to "level" up your skills. You can craft them or buy them from some one.
COH. Havent played this one.

Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Dell LCD Monitor Questions
|
on: March 30, 2005, 06:20:27 PM
|
I took advantage of a recent slick deal and picked up the DELL 1905FP and Axim X30 with bluetooth and 802.11B for $500. I replaced my 21" viewsonic with this Dell and it is great. I feel like I have gained half of my home office back with that huge thing off my desk. THe monitor looks great and everything so far has worked just fine, I even tested out the USB ports on the monitor. I have it hooked up via the digital cable to my Radeon 9600. I have run half life 2 and WoW at the default res of 1280 x 1024 and no problem. One tip when you first turn the monitor on check the brightness mine was set all the way to 100 so I lowered it to 50. Even after that I still had to lower the Gamma in the games down to default setting or they were too bright. Colors look fantastic and I havent noticed any pixel problems. I ordered this on a friday afternoon and both boxes showed up on Teusday morning. I am very happy with this purchase. Check out www.slickdeals.net every now and then Dell has been having lots of deals on LCD's. I got this one for $310 after coupons. Drifter

Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / A nice map, but something weird.

Thats nice L/E and I never believe stories from a friend of a friend who say Ferris Bueller pass out at 31 flavors last night.
In short you have an axe to grind with Blizzard about WoW and never miss a chance to post a negative. You quit the game move the heck on.
I am sure that the guy was absolutely innocent and the smite gods just bore down on him for no reason what so ever.
He got into an area he did not belong in by a bug (not his fault) then he explored it (his fault) knowing he most likely did not belong and he got caught.

Horizons tried something like that I think. The problem you run into is trying to add new content all the time. What about the newer players or the ones that play slower? they then miss out.
I can hear it now "On to Gnomeregan everyone!, Uh dude they cleaned the place up and nothing is left, its a tourist attraction now.." "On to the deadmines! Uh Dude....tourist attraction".
It certainly is a good idea, I just do not think it is in any way possible to do this in an MMORPG.

In beta the areas were well known and just about impossible to get past the guardians that were not ready for play. NOt too mention the guardians would shout warnings as well. The guy knew it went in anyway due to bug or not its an exploit. he got banned for 24 hours big deal it will teach him not to do what he knows he shouldnt.

Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Broadband modem suggestions

daehawk, I had bellsouth DSL free for a year so I kept both. My cable company had been bought by a larger one and I had 2 IP's grandfathered to me that I did not want to lose. The dsl was free so I used both for that time.

actually daehawk it varies. I had cable and DSL at the same time for over a year. I downloaded a bit faster on the cable connection but had consistently a lower ping to servers on the DSL side. By a faster download a good sized file might take a minute longer to download on the DSL versus the cable, something like a gamedemo I mean.
I ditched cable and switched to satellite and DSL; in doing so I lowered what I pay by about $25/month.

I asked becuase you're posts are more like trolls; "EDIT: And that you'd have to dig for full patch notes is pretty indicative of a communication problem, no? " than a discussion.
Doesnt upset me at all. I think you are a customer that will never be satisfied by anything any company would do.

I agree that its a bit silly to have some one arrested for deleting a game character or items belonging to a character. You should also look at it from the pont of view that some one else proposed. At what point does the deletion of virtual material cause harm?
If roommates share a PC and one deletes the others term paper what then? There is definitely harm and distress there.
Can you define the attachment the player had to the character and items. The es-girlfreind knew what she was doing and intentionally acted with malice in mind.
Because people stop posting it doesnt mean you won, perhaps you just wore them down.

Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / MX1000 mouse question
|
on: January 25, 2005, 12:10:49 AM
|
|
I bought it from newegg for $62 to replace my MX700. I do like it. It is a bit different in some aspects. The default setup for the buttons and controls is definitely different. Stays charged for a very long time with the auto off function and this has had no impact at all in gaming (there is no lag for it to turn on etc). Took a day or two to get used to the change in buttons but it was no big deal, took me as long to get used to the MX700 over my standard mouse.

Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Strange problem... PSU, video card (6600 gt), or heat?
|
on: January 10, 2005, 05:13:50 PM
|
|
I had this very same issue when I had a TI4200 installed. My monitor would go black the powersave light would come on and I would have to hard reboot the PC. I replaced the video card with a Radeon 9600 and problem went away.
Recently I bought the Albatron 6600GT AGP card from newegg and the problem came right back. I also noticed a sound stutter at the time of lockup. I removed my sound card (turtle beach santa cruz) and the problem went away. I am now using the built in sound on the motherboard (realtek).
After a day and a half of use the 6600 GT card started showing issues clipping, 3-5 second lockups and purple/green bars woudl show in the terrain in WoW. I RMA'd the card back to newegg and got a refund.
I think there is an issue with Turtle Beach sound cards and possibly the Nvidia drivers si the only thing I can think of. I was running the latest drivers on both sound and video and no overclocking anything.

Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / WOW: enchanting?
|
on: December 20, 2004, 09:29:41 PM
|
|
Enchanting is a huge suck hole of resources. You can do some nice stuff with it. I have a mage that has tailoring and enchanting. You can make items right away with tailoring that you can use. With enchanting you can make them a bit better. In order to get what you need to enchant items you have to disenchat or break green, blue or god forbid purple items. You would normally be selling these for money so if you dont have a gruildor group of people to supply you with items to break this can really impact your finances.
Enchanting doesnt really have skill that supports it. Tailoring is in the same boat although some tailoring items require leather so you could take skinning to get it. Like mining supports smithing and engineering, skinning supports leatherworking, herbalism supports alchemy.

yes you will. The horde and alliance mix in many areas like booty bay and ratchet. I havent played since beta there is a town south of the shimmering flats that is neutral as well. There are ares with town for both sides etc so you will see plenty fo the other sides areas.

Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / World Of Warcraft to debut week after HL2?

Falatar read a little higher the game is fun to play. It will be ready when they want to release it.
Where is the fun in ganking someone for no reason? The PvP actions I have seen by players is the usual take a bunch of maxed out players and attack a small town where the NPC's and players are too low of a level to have any chance. Thats how PvP has worked so far from what I have seen. Since there is no reward at all, why even bother?

Olaf get the chip off your shoulder and reread my post I dont give a darn about PvP as I have no intention of playing that way. PvP has absolutely no reward at all right now, you get no experience nor do you get a monetary reward so its really a waste of time. In that regard I dont care if they balance PvP I dont think most players want to play that way anyhow.

The game is definitely done enough to be released when they get the last of the talents into the game and thats in the next patch. They have added/modified a lot of things and no the game is not perfect but it certainly is playable and fun. I do not play on the PvP server and have no intentions to so I am not commenting on that. PvP just isnt worth it in my opinion you essentially get nothing from killing a player other than making them do a corpse run. You can do PvP on the regular servers just walk into an enemy city and you have the PvP flag on automatically or attack any NPC.
