The fact that diablow was before baldurs gate on that list and you are ok with it has just damned you to rpghell also! Tongue Preprare to spend an eternity playing final fantasy clones!

for the record...i've never been able to get into the Diablo games at all, while BG (and every other Infinity engine game) are some of my favorites.  i'd rather spend an eternity pulling out my own toenails and using the pieces to gouge out my eyes than miss out on games like BG in favor of playing poor FF clones forever.  BG will get it's chance in the other side of the brackets soon...

and my picks for this round...

Jagged Alliance 2
Wing Commander 3
Kohan: Immortal Sovereigns
Total Annihilation
Theif: The Dark Project

the benefits aren't limited to someone with a surround system though.  like jessie said, EAX adds environmental effects to sounds...things like reverb, echoes, dampening of sounds that you're hearing through walls/objects.  it's really kind of hard to describe without hearing it for yourself, but it really does make a big difference...and each new version of EAX has made everything sound a little more realistic.  if you don't have a surround sound system, you still get many of the EAX benefits...and you would be surprised how well some games are able to mimic surround using only 2 speakers now.  it's all pretty impressive and developers are getting better at taking advantage of the abilities all the time.  when i got my new pc about a year ago, i made the switch from an old SBLive! to an Audigy2-ZS, and the difference is amazing...way more than i expected Cool

as for cost, you can pick up an Audigy2 for about $70 at Newegg...or you can get the Audigy2-ZS for $92.  the most obvious difference between the two is 7.1 channel surround support with the ZS (only 6.1 with the regular Audigy2)...not an issue if you don't have a surround setup.  it really is a great card though, and i do think you'd notice an improvement over your old TB-SC...even without a surround setup.

maybe someone else who has made the change will jump in and back me up...

the Audigy2 is a great card...regardless of what people may say based on older products.  i've been using an Audigy2-ZS for about 10 months and it's been absolutely driver/software issues, and the sound is incredible.  the SC may have sounded good a few years ago, but there's really no comparison to hearing the latest games with EAX 4.0HD on a nice surround system...

I notice a couple of you have the Antec Sonata Case. I really like the look of that case and am thinking of getting one. Are they as quiet as Antec claims?

I don't know what your threshold but its pretty damn quiet in my opinion.  Sitting here now, with no noise in the background and the house completely quiet and I can *barely* hear it and that's when I'm trying to.  Great case.

i'll second this opinion...the Sonata is very quiet, is built extremely well, and looks great.  the only audible noise coming from my Sonata is the soft sound of the stock Intel HSF on my cpu...replace that, and i'd have a near-silent system (not far off now).  i've had my Sonata for about 10 months now and would recommend it to anyone Cool

for the record...i started with the list that crumsteel just posted and made a few corrections.  for example, "Map Pack 1" and "Map Pack 2" refer to "Community Bonus Pack 2, Vol 1 & 2," and all of those 1on1 maps make up the "DM-1on1 Map Pack."  the map names on that list aren't exact either, so i tracked down the right ones and included the links.  the only one i didn't link was the ECE pack because it's a large file that's easy to find...use whatever link gives you the fastest download

what i'm trying to say is that everything in my list and crumsteel's are essentially the same...i just used some more accurate names in mine.  it's all the same stuff though Cool

I was just trying to get on there and it starts downloading a bunch of stuff. One of the files is kind of big and I end up with like a 45 minute wait for the download to finish.

I've already downloaded like 2 gigabytes with of extra crap for UT2k4, and I still don't have whatever's on the server? I don't have the hard drive space for one game to keep sucking it up like this

here's what should be a complete list of the necessary downloads...

UT2K4 Version 3323 Patch

Community Bonus Pack 2 - Volume 1
Community Bonus Pack 2 - Volume 2

Flag Pack 2004
UT2K4-Editors Choice Bonus Pack
UT 2004 WinXP Levels

DM-1on1 Map Pack

once you have all those, you should be set for a while...with the exception of the small UAdminMod file that zaxxon updates occassionally.

So, does your BB have any video store competition disarm or is my theory completely off the rocker?

i live in a pretty densely populated area right along a strip of shops and restaurants, so there is some competition.  within 5-10 minutes drive of my apartment, i think there are 2 BBs, one Hollywood Video, and a couple Family Video stores.  the BB stores might be trying to compete with FV...i've never been there, but i think they do have pretty low rental rates.  i know that HV still charges about $3-4 for a rental.  i guess that could be enough competition to drive rates down...
4178  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Blockbuster Rates on: October 14, 2004, 11:52:17 PM
hmm...sounds like you guys are getting kinda screwed.  my local BB has been doing 1-day rentals for $2 on any release for a while now.  rent a movie any day of the week, and it's due back by midnight the next day...keep it longer, and you pay $1 for each additional day.  you also have the option of paying the old rates up front if you know you want something for more than a day or two ($3.49 for a duration dependent on age of the movie).  i live so close to a BB that i never need a movie for more than one day...pick one up the day i plan to watch it, then drop it off when i go out the following day.  i've actually found myself renting more often now that it's a little cheaper.

here's a little interesting Microman/Tansformers history for you...

did you know that Takara's Microman/MicroChange toy line from the 70s-early 80s was the first predecessor to the Transformers?  in the early 1970s, Hasbro licensed its GI Joe action figure line to Takara, who then created their Combat Joe line of toys.  robot figures were very popular in japan at the time, so Takara next turned the 12" GI Joe toy mold into a transparent transforming cyborg toy line...they made the Combat Joe body out of clear plastic so you could see the cyborg parts inside (see it here).  those cyborg toys were then shrunk down so that it would be easier to sell playsets and vehicles for them...and Microman was born.  in the early 80s, the Microman series was revamped into robots that transformed into vehicles, and they created the MicroChange series of robots that turned into everyday objects (microscopes, cassettes, guns).  in 1984, the Microman toys made a circle back to the US when Hasbro licensed them (as well as the Diaclone toys, another spin-off series) and renamed them Transformers.  the original Megatron TF from '84 (Walther P38 handgun) was actually a Microchange first released in japan in 1980...Optimus Prime was originally released by Takara in '84 as part of their Diaclone line (named Battle Convoy).  once Hasbro had licensed the transforming toys from Takara, they worked with Marvel comics to create a backstory and names for all the characters...and the Transformers mythology was born.  when the Transformers became a hit in the US, Takara re-imported the toys (and cartoons) back to Japan, where they were hugely successful and brought an end to the already dying Microman series.  Microman disappeared until the late 90s, when they were resurrected by Takara for both their 20th and 25th anniversary.  now that the Transformers are becoming popular in the US and japan again, we're seeing more and more imports of the latest iteration of Microman.  pretty interesting story if you're much of a toy collector Cool

that said, i'm more of a TF Microman toys in my collection.  i think the highlight of my small collection is the 20th Anniversary Optimus Prime (Masterpiece Convoy in japan)...12" and 3.5 pounds of die-cast transforming goodness.  it's by far the coolest TF ever released and is definitely more of a collector's piece than a kid's toy due to its complexity, but it's an awesome addition to any toy collection.  the other great Transformers available now are the Alternator/Binaltech line...detailed replicas of real-world cars that are second only to 20th Anniversary Optimus for being the best TFs ever.

but i don't really know anything about Transformers toys...i'm 25 years old and don't play with that kiddy stuff anymore...paranoid

i still think the commercials from a few years ago are some of the funniest i've seen.  the original one featured them trying to shoot gerbils out of a cannon and through the center of the O in their name.  unfortunately, their aim was a little off...

they had a whole series of them that were all great...the gerbils, releasing rabid wolves on a marching band, tattooing their logo on the foreheads of daycare kids...great stuff.  unfortunately, it wasn't long before they were pulled off the air...turns out someone must have been offended...

i just picked up Sum41's new album Chuck on a whim while i was dvd shopping at BestBuy this evening...All Killer, No Filler was a fun punk/pop album, so i figured what the hell (doesn't hurt that it's only $9.99 either).

so what do i think?  they went a little different direction this time and i'm really liking what i've heard so far.  they have a few mellow songs this time around, but the majority is an interesting punk/metal mix that actually makes for some really kick-ass songs.  if you're into punk and hard-rock/metal, i'd recommend checking it out

tonight's show was pretty good...although ken still had another runaway win.  they had a great category titled "Tricky Questions" and stumped everyone with the first clue...

The total number of each animal that Moses took on the ark

One of the other contestants said 2 and got it wrong...then ken rang in with "one of each" and was wrong as well.  everyone felt a little stupid when alex pointed out that the answer was zero...noah took animals on the ark, not moses biggrin
4189  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Microsoft .Net question(log in) on: October 12, 2004, 11:18:03 PM
there is an even easier way to fix this than using TweakUI...although i do think that every WinXP user should have TweakUI available for all the other great things it can do...

for some reason, when you install the .NET, the generic "Guest" account is automatically activate.  the result is that people who have previously only had a single account that logs on automatically start seeing the login screen.  the solution?  you can either use a utility like TweakUI to set automatic logon for your usual account, or you can go to 'User Accounts' in the Control Panel and turn off the 'Guest' account (click on 'Guest' under "Pick an account to change," then click on "Turn off the Guest account").

both methods work, but disabling the Guest account gets to the root of the problem, while setting an automatic logon just gets you around it.
