4081  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / GameSpot: The Final Hours of Half-Life 2 on: November 15, 2004, 06:55:36 PM
Quote from: "Raintitan"
As a Steam user,  I would be annoyed if the retail customers could play it and I couldn't.

But, it doesn't look like anyone can play it right now. I don't see any reviews, nothing.....which leads me to believe that there may be some sort of surprise in store for us (which could be good...or bad).

I can't think of a game where no real reviews or other people posted impressions right before it came out. I consider the PC Gamer UK article to be a fluke at the moment.

Interesting times...

there's a good reason why you don't see many reviews yet.  in order to protect their property, Valve refused to give review copies to anyone.  if you wanted to play the game and review it early, you had to travel to Valve and play it on their systems.  the few places that have reviews (PCGamer UK/US) agreed to play at Valve HQ.  the rest of the reviewer world waits for the official release like everyone else.
4082  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / WHERE R TEH PIRAETD COPEIS OF HALF-LIEF 2?????!? OMG WTF on: November 15, 2004, 05:02:22 PM
Quote from: "Punisher"
Really? I wasn't aware that the retail version didn't have an exe, I thought it was just a locked exe or something, since the game can actually be installed...

i have the retail version and installed it last night to check out CS:S and the stress test.  as far as i can tell, once the installation is finished, what you have on your HD is exactly like the people that got it from Steam.  when you try to run the game, this is what you get...a message that you can't play yet, but there's no unlock date mentioned.
4083  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / I have Half-Life 2 in my hand on: November 13, 2004, 10:42:43 PM
for what it's worth, i was just in BB for other reasons and picked up a copy of HL2...they had a display full of them in the front of the store, along with the CE and Prima guide, so i grabbed mine a little early.

so what's in the box? you get the 5 discs in paper sleeves, a 6x4.5" reference card with install instructions on one side and controls on the other, and a mail-in rebate card good for $20 off an ATI video purchased by March 1, 2005. that's it...unless you consider the box art to be something special (i got the G-man).  although there's not much to see, i've thrown up a picture here if anyone is curious.

in the end, having it now does me absolutely no good because it isn't playable yet...but it does save me another trip to BB later. the other upside is that i should be able to unlock it early on Tuesday morning at the same time as all the Steam buyers and get some play time in right away. in any case, i have my copy now and it only cost me $46 thanks to a handful of those BB Bucks from McDonalds Cool

4086  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / HL2 early release legal question on: November 12, 2004, 09:42:47 PM
Quote from: "Punisher"
It is in this case that I am referring to the EULA not being enforceable, since there is no EULA when purchasing the game, only during install or after you open it. Also, since most stores nowadays do not allow opened returns of software in general, Person A has spent their money on a game they cannot use nor return. Person A is out of their money. It is gone. Regardless of the amount of Inetnet knowledge that the game won't be released until the 16th, you cannot prove that someone who went to the B&M knew this. he game box only has the Internet connection as a requirement. It does not say an Internet Connection after the 16th.
If anything Valve or  VU can sue the B&M store, but they should not make a legitimate customer suffer by not unlocking the game for them.

suffer?  god forbid someone has to wait 4 more days to play a game...especially one that has been in development for six years
these people haven't lost their money on anything...they'll get to play the game on the 16th just like everyone else.  Valve/VU set the release date for the 16th, and they have every right to enforce that date.
4087  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Ever go to a concert by yourself? on: November 12, 2004, 07:37:44 PM
i kind of went to a concert by myself once...
a group of friends bought tickets to a concert that i wasn't expecting i'd be able to go to at the time.  i later found out that i could make the show, so i bought a single ticket for myself and planned on meeting up with them there during the time between bands.  it worked out great in the end...their group of 5 wound up with seats near the back, while my single tickets got me an awesome spot in the 12th row.  i got to hang out with them between bands, and enjoyed the concert up close.  i'm pretty focused on the band/music during a concert, so standing between two strangers didn't bother me at all Cool

[Round 4 Matchups:

Left:

*pass*
Half-Life
Civilization
Planescape: Torment

Right:

Unreal Tournament 2004 vs. Baldur's Gate 2
*pass*
Knights of the Old Republic
Deus Ex

i can't believe i had to pick between BG2 and UT2K4...both are about the best in their genre in my opinion...

4090  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Half Life 2 released in Savannah Georgia on: November 12, 2004, 12:49:40 AM
Quote from: "farley2k"
So what is the point in having a "launch" day when stores can sell the game?  Just sell the game but don't let people play! smile  Bet that wouldn't piss off consumers very much.....

they've been doing this for a while already with Steam purchases...
4091  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Half Life 2: What will you do to play it on the 16th? on: November 11, 2004, 03:48:53 AM
i got lucky and have the day off...but i haven't gotten it off steam, and don't have a pre-order in for the game.  i'm taking a chance at waiting to see if someone is selling it a little cheaper...the local Wal-Mart is good about knocking the prices down (got Doom3 for $42 on release day).  my plan is to head over to whatever B&M store in the area has a good price and pick it up in the morning.  fortunately, i live in an area where people won't be going so nuts over the release that all the copies will be taken if i hit the store early.  once i have the game in hand, i'll come home and play all day Cool
4092  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / should I get KOTOR on: November 10, 2004, 11:56:31 PM
if you will have the time to play it eventually, KOTOR is an excellent game...one of the best i've played in the past year.  i'm not sure how important it will be before playing KOTOR-2, but it's a great game on its own.
4093  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Which hard drive to buy on: November 09, 2004, 06:07:27 PM
i've had a WD 160GB SATA for about a year now and have been very pleased...it's fast and extremely quiet (never hear it spin up).  one of the big reasons i chose it over another brand at the time is that it was one of the few drives to come with a 3-year warranty.  it seems like the warranty periods on HDs can vary even within a brand...some WD's have 3 years, while others are 1 year...probably the same with other brands as well.  in the end, i'd say they're all about the same...just have to hope you get a good drive (which most are).

4095  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / How are the Ipods? on: November 09, 2004, 12:10:50 AM
i'm on the verge of buying an mp3 player as well, and it looks like i'll probably be going with a 40GB iPod.  the Creative Zen-Xtra looks like a great player as well, but i don't like the interface as much as the iPod and it's a brick compared to the compact, sleek design of an iPod...sound quality of the Zen is supposed to be great though.  in the end, i don't think you can really go wrong with any of them.  they all play music well, so i think the best way to decide is just go to a store and check them out...pick the one with a form-factor/interface that you like the most and that fits your budget.
4096  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / I need a DVD RW drive on: November 08, 2004, 06:26:17 PM
i'll second DB's recommendation for that NEC ND-3500A...which is also available in black, or with a copy of Roxio's burning software for only $2 more.  both Anandtech.com and TomsHardware.com have called it the best DVD burner available in their recent comparisons (published last week)...not only is it the fastest, but they both say it has the best burn quality/compatibility.  the only weakness is that it doesn't seem to have DVD-RAM support.  if DVD-RAM support is a must, then i would recommend the Pioneer DVR-108...comparable to the NEC, but its max CD burning speed is a little slower (32x vs 48x).  they're both quality burners, but the NEC comes out on top in my opinion because DVD-RAM isn't useful to me...i'm on the the verge of buying the same burner for myself Cool

4098  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / The Incredibles demo on: November 08, 2004, 03:52:33 AM
i was in a store today and saw both versions of the game sitting right next to each other on the shelf.  believe it or not, the 'grown-up' version was the cheaper of the two thanks to a sale price...$23.72 at my local Wal-Mart.  pretty nice price for a brand new game.

I've been playing the old Smart Games PC games lately, and am stuck on a couple word puzzles.  Hopefully, someone can help.

1. The clue is "Blackjack decision".  The only thing I know is that it ends with "E".  I've tried double and insurance, and it's not either of those.

does it have to be one word?  if not, then "Hit Me" could be the answer...
4101  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / GTA3 package - Pharmaceutical roof how to on: November 07, 2004, 05:41:20 AM
actually, jumping off the train tracks is the way to do it...at least that's the trick i used.  they key is jumping from the right spot so that you can actually make the distance easily.  if you walk down the tracks until you're right above the taxi building, you'll see one of the support beams from the tracks that sticks out the side.  jump from that beam (with a running start) instead of the track itself, and it gets you that little bit closer that you need in order to land on the roof of the pharmaceutical building.

give it a shot...i'll bet you can make it from there Cool

Presuming I know what everyone's talking about slywink, it's also hinted at (although the final act itself is not shown) in the teaser trailer for Episode 3.

i've watched the Episode 3 trailer several times now, and i'm fairly certain that the spoiler we're talking about here isn't suggested in any way.  like others have said though, it's something that's not all that surprising.
4103  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / The Incredibles is... well incredible! Duh! on: November 07, 2004, 05:04:08 AM
just got back from the theater...absolutely great movie!  it definitely has a different tone than anything Pixar has done in the past and targets an older audience, but they've done it perfectly yet again.  i'll continue to stand by my opinion that the geniuses at Pixar can do no wrong.

even if you're not a fan of animation or Pixar's earlier films, i still recommend going to see The Incredibles...you won't be disappointed Cool
4104  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Vice City Help on: November 06, 2004, 08:25:56 PM
i finished that mission using the mouse and keyboard without too much trouble...it is very possible.  i just ignored the guys for the most part and focused on getting the targets as quickly as possible.  if a guy got too close, i just bumped him with the chopper and didn't have to worry about him anymore.  it did take a few tries, but it's not bad once you get the hang of controlling the helicopter.

Holy crap...

If you do not want a pretty heavy spoiler, do NOT watch that trailer. It gave away something I suspected, but to have it confirmed was both cool and a slight bummer. But that game looks monumentally kick ass, and if The Collective are the ones behind it then I'm there.

i noticed that pretty significant scene too...although i figured it was coming anyway.  looks like a game with the potential to be pretty cool though.
4106  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Demo for FlatOut is out now! on: November 06, 2004, 05:25:17 AM
i gave the demo a try this afternoon and have to admit that i'm pretty impressed.  the graphics and physics are extremely well done, and the racing is a lot of fun.  although it's far from a realistic racer, the physics do add a different feel to the game that works pretty well.  there were a few times where i hit small bumps that sent my car flipping through the air, but those were rare.  i'll be keeping an eye on the final game once it hits the shelves Cool

there seems to be 2 links for the community bonus packs, the first being the link you have that says "community bonus pack 2 volume 1 and 2 and the other a link that says cbp1.  is those the same mod or do i need them both?  also the "community bonus pack 2 vol. 1 and 2" link takes me to just 1 single download, is that correct?  is vol. 1 and 2 together in the same download?

i guess this can be a little confusing, so i'll try to make some sense out of it all...

Community Bonus Pack 2 was released a few months back in two "Volumes" and consists of all-new maps for UT2K4...you have to download both Vol 1 and Vol 2 to have all of CBP2 (two large, separate files).  Community Bonus Pack 1 was originally created for UT2K3, but a version modified for UT2K4 was recently made available.  we now have both CBP1 and both volumes of CBP2 installed on the server.

the thing that confuses this issue now is that they've changed the site that the CBP2 link goes to...it now goes to an overall site for both CBP2 and CBP1, so we'll have to get zaxxon to fix the link.  here are the new links to download pages for all the CBP content...

Community Bonus Pack 1

Community Bonus Pack 2 - Volumes 1 & 2

both of those links provide multiple mirror for the content, so you should be able to find one that gives a good d/l speed.

now we just need for zaxxon to fix the links in the first post Cool

i'm not an avid keyboard shopper, and have never really cared for the "Natural" layout, but $25 from Newegg (s/h included) seems like a decent deal.  that's for the plain Natural keyboard without any extra buttons...they also have the 'Multimedia' version for a few dollars more.

if so, i'll holler when i pick a copy up and i'm ready to play.

that is correct!  because you're picking up the ECE at the store, you won't need to download the ECE Bonus Pack (you'll already have it), but you will need to get the rest of the maps.  it all adds up to a pretty hefty set of downloads, but it's well worth it in the end.  i think i speak for everyone when i say we always look forward to new blood on the server Cool
