4041  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / NINTENDO DS-THE TICKLE ME ELMO! on: December 13, 2004, 08:20:11 PM
i have a hard time considering the DS this year's 'Tickle Me Elmo' when i can still walk into stores all over indianapolis and pick one up without any trouble.  they may be hard to find in some markets, but i think they're still easily available in many other areas...

I'm not sure about the $22.99 price for RoTK at Best Buy.  They show the Fellowship and RoTK DVDs side by side.  There is a "$22.99" tag over the Fellowship box, and a "Hot price" label between the two.  Whether this means they are both $22.99, or if that price just applies to Fellowship, I'm not sure.

you are correct that it doesn't actually say that price in the ad,  but if you go to and add the DVD to your cart, you can see that the price will be $22.99 when it becomes available on tuesday.

one small correction to make...

i saw the BB ad this morning, and Doom3 is actually $29.99...i'd still say that game is worth that price though.  BB will also have the RotK:EE DVD for $22.99 on tuesday...that's the lowest b&m price i've seen around so far.
4044  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Comfortable gaming Keyboard on: December 10, 2004, 05:09:52 PM
i've had a Logitech Elite for about a year now and like it a lot.  it's one of their "Zero-Tilt" keyboards and does lay pretty flat if you don't fold the little props out (i like mine tilted a little).  i've used mine for some marathon FPS gaming sessions and never had any discomfort, but i'd say that's something that is totally different from one person to the next.

After a person goes through the character creation one time can we PLZ be able to skip that on alternate characters? That was a gripe of MW. I loved making and trying so many new characters but geez did having to go through that over and over suck.

you didn't have to go through the lengthy question process every time in Morrowind.  if you know what kind of character you want, all the profiling questions can be skipped and you can enter custom specs in just a couple minutes time...

And I still haven't picked up Spider-Man 2, but I plan to wait on that one. I already got screwed into double-dipping on the first one when they released the Superbit, and that's just damned well not going to happen again. I'm really tired of having to buy two versions of the same movie to get the features I want. In this case, I want DTS soundtracks. Sony gets no money from me on SM2 until the Superbit hits shelves.

umm...the Superbit version of SM2 hit shelves the same day as the rest of the DVDs (FS, WS, Collector Set).  it's been in stores all over the place for more than a week already...

4048  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Where to find an 8MM movie projector? on: December 10, 2004, 04:47:27 AM
having the old film put onto VHS or DVD is probably the best option.  sure, there's a little nostalgia to actually showing them with a projector, but it's important to consider the age of that film.  it does weaken over time and every run on a projector runs the chance of breaking the strip.  just something to keep in mind...
4049  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Gilligan Gooner on: December 10, 2004, 04:42:44 AM
Gilligan Gooner has to have been one of the best reality show casting choices of all time...absolutely perfect for a Gilligan.  i've only seen the first couple episodes, but that guy was constantly one of the most entertaining parts of the show.  watching him try to climb into a hammock was great, and seeing him run the pedal-power shower for rachel hunter (then get stuck doing it for everyone) was priceless.  Gooner was definitely a much better choice than that other gilligan guy.

and the one Ginger is really hot too slywink

you should check out Teleshphoros' List O' Mods.  it is by far the best list of Morrowind mods i've ever found, complete with descriptions and download links.

you might also want to have a look at this thread over at OctopusOverlords about the Morrowind Plug-In DVD put together by Blackhawk (an idea started at GG).  the official distribution effort is over, but it's a great disc if you can get someone over there to send you a copy Cool

So that's what I've pieced together and it makes more sense now. That Vortigon was a tricky one to find though. After you defeat the Combine HK Helicopter at the end of the airboat sequence, you open a gate. Drive to the far back corner of that next section and you'll see two sewer grates. The one on the left is slightly open. Climb onto your airboat and boost yourself up in there. Haul ass through the sewage and at the end is the Vortigon.

there are a few Vortigaunts in the game that run through that same bit of dialog.  i found the one you mentioned, but you can get all that info at an earlier point as well.  talk to the one who puts the gun on your airboat after he has given you the gun and he'll run through the same speech.  they definitely give a lot of information that helps to clear up a few plot points Cool

Baldur's Gate II

that's a very tough decision though...PS:T is an amazing story and great use of the Planescape world.  i've gone with BG2 in the end, however, just because of the sheer scope of that game.  while PS:T tells one of the best RPG stories i've ever experienced, i think the massive world in BG2 makes it a more impressive accomplishment overall.  they've both exceptionally good games though...two of my all time favorites.

And Disarm, first is your name after Smashing Pumpkins?  I hope so.  Second, good luck with the interview.  HL2 will be a blast tomorrow so have a good time. name came from the Pumpkins song.  the first time i played Quake online (back in '97), i had to come up with a name, and that song just happened to be playing in my room at the time.  it seemed like a neat name and somewhat appropriate for playing Quake, so i went it.  now, seven years later, it's still online persona Cool

thanks for the well-wishes on my interview...hopefully it will go smoothly.  at this point, i think i'm more concerned with hoping for decent weather during my drive than anything else...

i saw that episode and thought it was hilarious...of course he did get the question right and won by a pretty significant margin.  from her expressions when her answer/question was revealed, i couldn't tell if she was trying to make a joke or was being a smartass out of frustration over ken mopping the floor with everyone...
4064  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / 2004 Game of the Year on: December 01, 2004, 07:15:08 PM
it was a tough call for me, but i went with UT2K4 on that list.  no other game this year has received the amount of play time that i've given to UT...nothing else has even come close.  while i think HL2 is a magnificent game, i gave the vote to UT simply because of the amount of my time that it has taken up.  there hasn't been another game this year that holds my attention for hours on end like UT2K4.  i'll probably play through HL2 a few times, but that experience only lasts so long...for me, UT never gets old.

if i were to vote based on initial impressions without consideration for lasting value, HL2 would definitely be my of the best gaming experiences i've had in the last few years in fact.

before WinXP, i would either reinstall or upgrade at least once a year.  win98/Me needed to be cleaned out periodically due to slowdown, but the newer OSs are much better about taking care of themselves.  i've been running the same XP install on my gaming rig for about a year now without any backup rig has had the same XP install for a couple years now and still runs great.  personally, i'm glad i don't need to reformat all the time's not a difficult process, but it is time consuming.

You are supposed to go down the shaft.  Don't jump across from one to the other, just kinda drop down either clockwise or counterclockwise.

yep...the shaft is the way to go, and it's actually pretty easy if done correctly.  if you look at the beams, each level has a beam that slopes down at stops about halfway along a side...drop off the end of that beam to the one below and you can't miss.

one other word of advice...stay on the lowest beam and take out some of the headcrabs from there.  the room at the bottom is loaded with them, and it's much easier to stay where they can't reach you.  it's actually possible to take them all out before you hit the ground.

I'm at that part now, and just had a funny moment. You know those whirly-blade things in the middle of the road that you can turn on .. I turned this one on, and it got one kill then the blade flew off, so I started using the loose blade as a weapon.  On one shot, I fired the big blade thing and it cut a zombie in half but the blade hit the wall behind him, and shot back past me, hit another wall behind me, then careened right back into me, KILLING ME.

LOL. physics rule thumbsup

i had a similar situation, except i had a sawblade bounce back.  that's when i learned that they don't always stick in the walls...

this reminds of the only problem i have with my R/C car now...
my Ultima II is over ten years old now and parts are getting harder to come by all the time.  it makes me a little more reluctant to go crazy with it because i never know if i'll be able to find a replacement part next time something breaks.  one of these days, i need to have a look on eBay and see if i can find someone selling the same car cheap, or at least a lot of spare parts...or i could just use that as another reason to get a new car sometime Cool

IMO, those are the worst part, they're too fast and jumpy to reliably nail with a sawblade.

a shotgun blast to the face really slows them down though slywink
one of my favorite moments in that area was when i did manage to catch one with a sawblade.  the zombie was bounding across the rooftops and took a leap straight at me from a higher building.  i saw it coming the whole time and waited until it was airborn, then let the sawblade fly...the blade sliced it in half in mid-air a good distance away, but the zombies forward momentum caused both halves to land right at my feet.  that was probably one of my coolest moments in Ravenholm Cool

Or can you guys give me any hints?

i would recommend checking out the video card reviews over at and Tom's Hardware...both sites put up new comparisons of cards at different price levels just about every time a new card is released.  Tom's Hardware put up a Graphics Card Buyer's Guide last week that does a good job of summarizing all the latest offerings.  Anandtech probably has something similar on their site if you look around a little Cool
4080  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / RC cars as a hobby. on: November 22, 2004, 11:46:14 PM
i got a 1/10-scale electric car years ago and got somewhat heavily into the R/C hobby for a little while.  while it does require an initial investment of at least a couple hundred dollars, the long-term costs aren't terrible as long as you don't abuse your car too much and find yourself needing to replace parts all the time.  i would say that gas-powered cars are more popular right now, but they do have disadvantages...more expensive, more complex, and they make a fair amount of noise.  i never got into gas, but i'd love to get try it out sometime when i have a little more disposable income again.

electric cars, on the other hand, are mechanically pretty simple, typically cheaper, and they're quiet enough that you can play around your house without bothering the neighbors.  one downside to electric cars that i think anyone interested should be aware of is the short run-time for a fast car...the faster the car, the quicker it will drain your battery pack.  charging a battery usually takes anywhere from 15-30 minutes, then you get about 5-7 minutes of running time before you need another charge.  those few minutes are an absolute blast though.

my first real car, a Kyosho Ultima II, was relatively cheap...spent about $250 to get up and running (car, radio, battery, charger).  it's an addictive hobby though and wasn't long before i was upgrading every part i could to make it go just a little faster...i was determined to beat my brother's RC10 Team Car.  we had a great time racing both on the road and off, and even took the cars out to an empty parking lot and used my dad's police car to clock them one day.  after countless upgrades and tweaking, i managed to get 27mph out of my little car.  like i said before though, speed comes at a price with electric 49,000rpm motor drains a 30min charge in about 5 minutes.  i put that thing through hell and it still runs like new today.  i even took a few pics Cool

My Kyosho Ultima II - outside & inside

i think R/C cars are a great hobby.  you can get started relatively cheap and invest as you become more serious.  a good car can take quite a bit of abuse, and you can always repair them as long as you have the money for parts...unlike the cheap cars at wal-mart, a good car is built yourself and can be just as easily taken apart for repairs.  R/C cars are fun if you like to work with your hands and build/dismantle/tweak stuff...can even learn a little about electronics, engines, and transmissions/gearings while you're at it.  i even branched out a little and bought an electric speedboat eventually...those are a lot of fun as long as you don't let the battery run out in the middle of a pond (been there, done that).  my ultimate goal is to try a helicopted someday though Cool

i think the best thing to do starting out is head to a hobby shop that deals in a lot of R/C gear and see what's available...check out gas vs. electric, onroad vs. off, and see what you like.  if you want to check out R/C car magazines, i'd recommend picking up an issue of R/C Car Action.  i got that mag for years and it was always good...only cancelled because they started to focus almost entirely on gas cars and i was into electric.  i would also recommend Tower Hobbies as a good place to do some shopping.  they've been around for years and sell damn near anything you can imagine at a reasonable price...i guess you could say they were my "newegg of the R/C world" back in the day slywink
