4041  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Need some help with a power supply... on: December 17, 2004, 08:07:49 PM
biyobi is right...not all PSUs have an On/Off switch.  they maintain a minimal current to the motherboard even when they're "off" and are activated when the entire system is turned on.  in that case (which is very common), you have to make sure the PSU, mobo, and case switch are all connected correctly so that it all powers up together.  there won't be a direct connection betwee the front panel and the PSU...a signal travels through the mobo to turn everything on.

i think the Wiggles are in a unique position of being something that your kids should only watch when they're too young to understand just how disturbing those guys are.  start early if they absolutely have to see it, then stop before they're old enough to remember...

On a funny note, I have never used the account for anything except some random emailings to friends while away from home (my webhosting's webmail bites) however I logged in for the first time in 2 weeks and found 26 Spam Messages.  At least google was good enough to put the emails from the people they sold my address to directly to the spam box.

i doubt Google had anything to do with the spam though.  it's extremely common for spammers to used automated systems that send junk to thousands of address variations without actually knowing if any of them are real...some get through to real people, some don't.  no matter how closely you guard your address, it's virtually impossible to keep a spammer for stumbling across it at some point :\

heh...good luck on those.  i've been looking for a copy of Longbow2 for a long time and haven't found one with the manual that someone was willing to give up for a reasonable price.  i was actually bidding for one on eBay that ended this morning and lost...started at $4, but jumped to a final price of $29 in the last 3 minutes.  that's what seems to happen every time i'm interested, and i can't justify paying $30 for the game when i could just play the original Longbow some more.  there's some guy over there right now who seems to be buying them up in the $20 range and then re-auctioning them with a minimum price of about $40.  if you're willing to pay that price, you can pick one up on eBay right now though...
4046  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / PC Gaming version: Shut up! It IS time to reveal your GOTY on: December 16, 2004, 08:57:16 PM
it comes down to a match-up between Unreal Tournament 2004 and Half-Life 2 for me.  both a great games, and HL2 is definitely my single-player game of the year.  i have to give overall GOTY rights to UT2K4 in the end though.  no other game this year has sucked me in for the hours of blissful carnage that i've experience with UT...and i still have every bit as much fun as the day i first played the pre-release demo Cool
4047  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / GOAT of the Year Voting: PC edition on: December 16, 2004, 04:21:40 PM
my vote goes to Spiderman 2...didn't even have to think about it.  the rest of those games are actually considered pretty damn good by a large portion of the gaming public, but Spiderman 2 was a slap in the face of PC gamers.  giving us a mediocre kiddy version the game, while still advertising it the same as the much better console versions, was an unforgivable move.

wolverine...have you tried my suggestion about blocking the entrances?
by doing that, i got through without a scratch and never had a to shoot a guard with my own weapons.  the turrets did every bit of the work, and all but one guard was dead before i even stuck my head out of that little side room...only thing i saw of was a pile of bodies.  not a single Combine even made it through an entrance (with the exception of manhacks, but those are easily destroyed)...

i never actually got "The Talk" from either of my parents...just picked it up somewhere along the way.  it doesn't take long for word of that stuff to get around school once one kid has heard the truth.  my own curiosity and tendency to read any book i could get my hands on didn't slow things down any either.  a couple years ago, the subject came up around my mom, and my older brother and i both mentioned that we never got the talk.  my mom swore that she must have done it at some point and was surprised that it never happened.  i'm sure she had a talk with my younger sister though...

put me in the group that thinks you really can't start too young as long as you think the kids are ready to understand.  what's the use in keeping it secret?

Ok i'm in that room where you are locked in and there are four entrances and the soldiers keep flowing in, your supposed to set up 3 turrets to help you but they dont do shit for me. What's a good strategy?

there are ton of different ways that people have come up with for this area.  here's what i did (on my second try...once i knew what was coming)...

i used the gravity gun to grab every large item in the surrounding area that i could find (crates, tables, file cabinets, chairs, etc) and threw them downstairs so that they would block the entrances before i jumped over the rail.  for example, i took the long table out of the upstairs security station and dropped it straight down over the rail...then went downstairs and used the grav gun to set it right next to an entrance.  it fit perfectly to block one doorway on its own.  with a little effort, i was able to block all of the entrances before i jumped down...then i jumped the rail and started the attack.  i took the turrets over by the small room on the right and set one up facing toward each entrance on that side of the area...they easily took out any guys that were stuck behind the junk.  i hid out in the little side room and kept one turret in there with me just in case somebody got through.  the only enemies i really had to worry about were the manhacks, and killing a couple Combine that were standing outside the entrances on the opposite side (away from the turrets).  i got rid of them by carrying a turret through the center room toward the other side and setting it down at the corner to take them out.  i think i actually finished that entire sequence without actually firing a shot from my own gun Cool

Now is that on IE on all OSes?  I know it is part of SP2 for XP but is that update available for say Win 2k?

that's a good question.  i haven't used Win2K for several years now, so i can't answer that without having to look up the answer...

I'm not sure about the $22.99 price for RoTK at Best Buy.  They show the Fellowship and RoTK DVDs side by side.  There is a "$22.99" tag over the Fellowship box, and a "Hot price" label between the two.  Whether this means they are both $22.99, or if that price just applies to Fellowship, I'm not sure.

you are correct that it doesn't actually say that price in the ad,  but if you go to and add the DVD to your cart, you can see that the price will be $22.99 when it becomes available on tuesday.

After a person goes through the character creation one time can we PLZ be able to skip that on alternate characters? That was a gripe of MW. I loved making and trying so many new characters but geez did having to go through that over and over suck.

you didn't have to go through the lengthy question process every time in Morrowind.  if you know what kind of character you want, all the profiling questions can be skipped and you can enter custom specs in just a couple minutes time...

And I still haven't picked up Spider-Man 2, but I plan to wait on that one. I already got screwed into double-dipping on the first one when they released the Superbit, and that's just damned well not going to happen again. I'm really tired of having to buy two versions of the same movie to get the features I want. In this case, I want DTS soundtracks. Sony gets no money from me on SM2 until the Superbit hits shelves.

umm...the Superbit version of SM2 hit shelves the same day as the rest of the DVDs (FS, WS, Collector Set).  it's been in stores all over the place for more than a week already...

having the old film put onto VHS or DVD is probably the best option.  sure, there's a little nostalgia to actually showing them with a projector, but it's important to consider the age of that film.  it does weaken over time and every run on a projector runs the chance of breaking the strip.  just something to keep in mind...
4069  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Gilligan Gooner on: December 10, 2004, 04:42:44 AM
Gilligan Gooner has to have been one of the best reality show casting choices of all time...absolutely perfect for a Gilligan.  i've only seen the first couple episodes, but that guy was constantly one of the most entertaining parts of the show.  watching him try to climb into a hammock was great, and seeing him run the pedal-power shower for rachel hunter (then get stuck doing it for everyone) was priceless.  Gooner was definitely a much better choice than that other gilligan guy.

So that's what I've pieced together and it makes more sense now. That Vortigon was a tricky one to find though. After you defeat the Combine HK Helicopter at the end of the airboat sequence, you open a gate. Drive to the far back corner of that next section and you'll see two sewer grates. The one on the left is slightly open. Climb onto your airboat and boost yourself up in there. Haul ass through the sewage and at the end is the Vortigon.

there are a few Vortigaunts in the game that run through that same bit of dialog.  i found the one you mentioned, but you can get all that info at an earlier point as well.  talk to the one who puts the gun on your airboat after he has given you the gun and he'll run through the same speech.  they definitely give a lot of information that helps to clear up a few plot points Cool

Baldur's Gate II

that's a very tough decision though...PS:T is an amazing story and great use of the Planescape world.  i've gone with BG2 in the end, however, just because of the sheer scope of that game.  while PS:T tells one of the best RPG stories i've ever experienced, i think the massive world in BG2 makes it a more impressive accomplishment overall.  they've both exceptionally good games though...two of my all time favorites.
