2  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Max: Curse of Brotherhood on: August 10, 2014, 03:39:01 AM
Thanks to Xbox Live Games with Gold, I picked this little gem up for free a while back. I really didn't know much about the game, but you can never go wrong giving a free game a chance, and I'm really glad that I did. Max has a great concept that is very well executed, fun puzzle/platformer gameplay, and great visuals that all combine to make one of the better XBLA gaming surprises I've had in a long time. It is a short game, and I'm almost to the end already, but it's been a fun ride, and I find myself already wishing that it lasted a little longer.

If you've been on the fence about this game, pick it up now. You'll be glad that you did!

I don't have much gaming time this weekend, but I've really been enjoying Max: The Curse of Brotherhood tonight...very neat and fun game, especially considering that it was an Xbox Live freebie a couple months ago.

Thanks to Games with Gold, I actually have a substantial backlog of completely free games...and most of them I really am looking forward to playing icon_cool

The hotel basement generator sequence can kiss my ass.

Great game though!

Yeah, that sequence really sucked. Just figure out a path to run away without getting caught. You'll have a really hard time trying to fight your way out of there.

I'm pretty sure that different carriers use different parts of the 4G spectrum though. Not all 4G phones operate on the same frequency, and the variation is how carriers restrict you to their phones.

I've watched the first two episodes and would say it's pretty well done. I read the books last year, and they seem to be staying very true to what I remember so far. I'll definitely be sticking with it for a while if for no other reason than to see how they handle some of the major twists of the story. It could be one heck of a ride if they tell it well...

Costs constantly go up for services that rarely improve. I've had Cox cable TV and internet for eight years, and other than slowly rising bills, they've be great. I'm moving into a new house next month, and my Comcast is my only real broadband option. Unfortunately, it comes with a higher monthly bill for speeds that are barely more than half what Cox is giving me now. It's the only option in a rural area though...

I never had a problem with the landings either, but I could never get past stage 4...just too much incoming fire and too many targets for me to survive it all, and if I ever did, there was still the refueling and landing segments that you had to complete perfectly. Just one tiny mistake and it was all over mad

I studied the solution in college and used to be able to do it pretty quickly, but I've forgotten how over the years. I can still get two layers pretty easily, but I don't remember the final patterns any more. I really should work on it again...

After a drop in my available reading time recently, I finally finished Book 9 a few days ago...was a pretty uneventful addition to the series with the exception of one major scene at the very end, but Jordan was a good enough writer that it for the most part never really felt like a slog to get through. I'll be starting Crossroads of Twilight soon (the remaining supposed low point in the series) and am still enjoying it overall. My original goal was to finish by the end of this year...with life getting in the way of reading a bit more recently, l'll see how it goes...

We had a pretty good turnout tonight and it was absolute blast to play with everyone again. I definitely feel pretty rusty with my moves and aim, and I can't remember the maps at all, but it seems to be coming back a little already. Just need to keep playing and will can hopefully be back up to speed in no time icon_cool

15  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Marvel: Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. on: April 09, 2014, 02:03:59 AM
I would STRONGLY recommend holding off on watching tonight's episode if you haven't seen Captain America yet. It won't completely ruin the movie, but I think that CA will be more enjoyable without seeing what happens on tonight's SHIELD. They didn't waste any time jumping right into the huge changes that one would expect after seeing The Winter Soldier, and they give up quite a few secrets that would take some of the surprise out of the movie.

Warnings aside, tonight was probably the best episode of AoS so far, and it's pretty awesome to see the way that they're pulling all parts of the Marvel universe together. Now I'm really curious to see what happens next week. At this point, I can totally see AoS setting the stage for the next round of Marvel films...very cool  icon_cool

Went to see The Winter Soldier this afternoon on IMAX 3D...awesome movie that is easily one of the top Marvel films so far, right up there with Ironman and The Avengers. I think the coolest thing is that it really raises a lot of questions about what will happen in future Marvel films, and might even have a major impact on the Agents of SHIELD tv show. I love the way that Marvel is tying all their stories together...great stuff!

Also side question, did they show a bunch of baby formula on the ground somewhere, and if so, where was that?  Were we to assume/guess Judith and gang are already there as well?

There were remnants of a powdered milk package, along with some powder and a styrofoam bowl, on the ground next to the steps into the train car. Rick looks down and they show them just before they all go inside. I'm not sure what it meant, but it was definitely a deliberate effort to make you notice those things.

Yes...and one of them is the guy who saw Rick's face as he was being choked out on the bedroom floor. They made a pretty clear point of mentioning that one of them should recognize Rick if they ever run into each other again. Should be interesting...

I don't know why it should make a difference, but I got a Titanfall bundle this week and the box is not a slipcover. It's a fully custom-printed box for the bundle. Everything inside the box is standard except for the Titanfall download card though.

I'm glad they made the psycho kid a girl as opposed to the comic book version.  For some reason, it adds a bit more impact to her actions.

What was with the rabbits and her? They showed rabbits. They showed her draw a knife. Did she kill them? There wasn't any blood or screaming, so I wasn't sure what that was supposed to be.

Spoiler for Hiden:
She killed the rabbits. In an earlier scene where they show Daryl walking through that campsite, the camera pans past the log right before going to commercial, and they have a prolonged shot of blood and fur inside the log. You don't know what it is at that time, but you can make the connection later in the show when they jump back in time to show the girl with the rabbits.

Toilet Seats
Diabetes Management

I'm about halfway through book seven now. I made it to the the end of seven years ago and purchased book eight as soon as it was released, but I never read it. I've really enjoyed my reread so far and am looking forward to entering new territory soon.

Last year's accomplishments...nine novels and two autobiographies. While that's fewer books than previous years, I think the number of pages may be comparable thanks to the length of each book in my reading of almost half the Wheel of Time series last year. Most of this year will probably be spent on finishing the WoT, but I do plan on working some others in along the way...

Finished

A Crown of Swords (The Wheel of Time - Book Seven) - Robert Jordan - January 20
The Path of Daggers (The Wheel of Time - Book Eight) - Robert Jordan - March 6
Winter's Heart (The Wheel of Time - Book Nine) - Robert Jordan - May 13

In Progress

Crossroads of Twilight (The Wheel of Time - Book Ten)

I haven't updated my progress here in a while, but I finished book six last week and started seven a couple days ago. I'm a little over half way through #7 already thanks to holiday traveling, and will be venturing into new territory soon. I picked up book eight when it was first published but never got started on it all those years ago.

I am still enjoying the series and looked forward to starting each new book...will find out soon if that interest holds up through what so many people claim is a low point over the next couple books...

Finished

Grand Theft Auto V - March 23
Splinter Cell: Blacklist - July 8

In Progress

TitanFall

I just got my fiancÚ an Air on release day, and it is a really slick device...significantly lighter and easier to hold than the previous iPad, and very quick to load apps.

I was a little surprised to compare it to my almost two year old Asus Transformer Prime, however, and realize that they're pretty much the same thickness, feel like the same weight, and only differ in their longest dimension because the Prime has a 10-inch 16:9 screen. Apple talks up the Air like it's a marvel of engineering, and it is a good step from previous iPads, but they're not breaking new ground this time. I still think it's a pretty impressive device though.

Does the Asus have the same CPU/GPU performance and battery life as the Air?  I would think that it's* much further ahead (aside from the 2 year gap in tech). *the Air

I think he was getting at the thinness/weight is really not that much better than what has been put out from other companies in the past.

I understand, but if it's thin and light because there's nothing inside and the battery lasts 3 hours because it's tiny (I don't know the details of the asus), then what does it matter?

My point was mainly in regard to the form factor of the device (dimensions and weight)...the major difference that Apple is touting between the Air, the iPad4, and other competing devices. Processing speed is obviously improved two years further down the road, but it's the size and weight that it seems most people are really talking about. My point was that Apple's latest isn't really that much more compact or lighter than options that came well before it and were top of the line compared to the competition of the time.

To clarify a little bit, the Asus Transformer Prime was the top-of-the-line tablet when it was released in early 2012. It was the first to use nVidia's Tegra3 processor (making it the first quad-core tablet), has a 10-inch 16:9 display, 32GB of storage, a microSD slot, WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS, microHDMI output, and is good for about 10 hours of battery life. While it may not be as fast as the iPad Air, it packed an impressive amount of power and features in a similarly compact package, and it did it two years ago.

I remember some of the more major plot points, but the details are what make this story so great.

After reading the last three books back to back, I am taking a short break to read something else quickly. I'm enjoying my WoT read, but I don't want to burn out by trying to blast through 14 books of the same thing. I should be back into it within two weeks though...
